Cute place that was probably great in its heyday, but now, it Needs Some Work!! Our stay at Sierra Woods Lodge was...okay, but definitely not somewhere I would recommend in its current condition. We had contacted them ahead of time about a late check-in, and when we arrived, they had already made our keys and left them under the mat for us, which was convenient. They were extremely nice and friendly! Our room was all the way at the bottom of a rickety little boardwalk and down some old, shaky stairs. Which is okay, but made me wonder how the rooms were as clearly there had been no maintenance done on the outside of this lodge... As we walked down, we noticed that pretty much everyone had their windows open, and we could see directly into their rooms with people lying on their beds. Once we got into our room, we understood why...it was around 100 degrees inside! There was no air conditioning, just two fans running at full speed with the window open, and it was still unbearably hot. We could barely tolerate it. The carpet throughout the room was extremely sticky, to the point that I wouldn't even take my shoes off. The shower in the morning also wasn't very clean and was generally pretty gross...wore my flip flops in... I think this place could actually be decent with a few improvements. Replacing the old, sticky carpet with hardwood or another easy-to-clean flooring, giving the rooms a thorough cleaning, and adding air conditioning or even a mini-split...would make a huge difference. Unfortunately, as it is now, I wouldn't recommend staying here. read more

Nice place to stay near the ski resorts in the soda springs area. We were 30 minutes from boreal Woodward. Pros: The motel is kitschy, rustic, and a decent value for the price especially compared to everything closer to the ski resorts. The junior suite was spacious and well equipped. Beds were comfy with a heavy comforter Heat was sufficient Back yard area has a fire pit (not for winter) and seating, lots of snow for the kiddos There's a restaurant attached but it's just ok - still, a major convenience if the weather is rough Cons: Parking lot and walkways were pretty covered with ice and not shoveled out well - I know they had a big storm the day before but it was hard to park and get small kids down to our room which was down a few flights of outdoor stairs One of the sinks had weird tasting water - the other did not, so I don't think this is just the local water Upstairs noise from footsteps or plumbing is very apparent - light sleepers beware. read more

We so enjoyed our weekend. Teen challenge runs this hotel. We were treated with such kindness and respect and definite concern for our comfort. It was a peaceful weekend. First time here and I'm so impressed of how cute this place is, room had everything we need and more we had a 2 room suite each room had tv, it was clean and spacious, beds are comfortable, Kids love playing right outside our room. Is so close from the highway but feels and looks so in the woods. But the best thing here was the food rustic table does have the best clam chowder soup, the fish tacos so yummy and to say that I'm not a big fan of Mac and cheese, But the one my son had with brisket was delicious. What a wonderful experience! The staff was amazing and made our stay so comfortable, it didn't feel like we were away from home! The lodge is situated right off the hwy and really easy to find. It's still pretty quiet even though it's near the hwy and has a restaurant at the far end of it. Our room was nothing super fancy but it provided all of our basic and most desired needs: clean room/bathroom, enough towels, the bed was comfy and cozy, cable tv, wifi, great pillows and comforter, heated well, view of snowy mountains from bathroom, and best of all, we got to play out back in the snow, without having to pay for a SnoPark. Our family will certainly be booking here again. Oh, and just a note, the room didn't have a fridge or microwave so we just pack our cooler with ice from the restaurant to keep our yummy leftovers. read more

The staff at the lodge was absolutely incredible! We got caught in a major snowstorm driving from SFO to RNO thanks to a cancelled flight. They shoveled a spot for us to park, and dug our the car in the morning. No other hotel would be so caring. They had everything we needed (jackets, gloves, window scrapers) and didn't gouge us, it was serious a blessing! There is an attached restaurant with great food and an espresso bar! A hidden gem! Our accidental visit definitely created a future intentional visitor. The beds were comfortable (foam mattress) the pillows were too, several different to choose from. Room 8 was a double queen and had a brilliant walk in shower that was exactly what I was needing and definitely didn't expect from a small 13-14 room lodge. read more

The staff here are amazing ! A storm came in and were able to make it to the lodge. When we arrived we got stuck in the snow in front. We went to check in and the staff was so welcoming and reassuring . After check in they immediately helped dig our car out . When we got to our room it was nice warm and cozy. The kindest, sweetest staff ever! We arrived at about 2am and woke the front desk clerk from a very sound sleep. But he was genuinely kind and welcoming. And 20 minutes later when I woke him a second time because I had locked the keys in the room, he was equally kind. The room was basic, but clean and functional. We had a room with a king bed. The sheets were soft and comfortable. The bed was firm (not typically our preference) but still very comfy. Big bathroom, with excellent water pressure. In the morning I popped over to the attached restaurant for a coffee, which was delicious (and complimentary for hotel guests). Shortly after, we went for brunch. I had the BEST fish tacos - beautifully seasoned and topped with a fresh mango salsa. We also loved the fries. Homecut and well spiced. Overall, this is a basic hotel. The room is clean and comfortable, though dated. But the people are what make this place worth staying at. Every single person we encountered was kind, polite, and helpful. They definitely know how to make guests feel welcome and valued. read more

We have been here twice and it was perfect for our young kids. We just played in the back and stop in our room to rest or go to the restaurant for food or hot cocoa. Location is a plus for us especially during storms. It is just above the snow line from the bay are so we don't have to drive as long in the snow. Food is good and the portions are really big. The silver dollar pancakes are the size of my face. The service is fantastic. Everyone has been really nice and helpful. We left our iPad in one of the room and they helped us find it (it fell behind the headboard) and they are mailing it back to us! read more

Restaurant food was not good. The burger was one of the worst I've had, it was rubbery like an old shoe. There is no alcohol at the restaurant or tiny on site store. The room had an overwhelming perfume smell from wall plug ins. Would not recommend this place. read more

My bed was comfortable and the internet worked. The price of the motel room was very affordable, and the bathroom was bright and clean. When I took a bath, the water was nice and warm! The staff were helpful and friendly and the prices at the restaurant were shockingly affordable, and the food was good. Every employee I encountered was helpful and polite. Our family decided to do a quick trip to the snow. We stayed at this lodge after a day at a resort near by. Upon arrival the staff was friendly. When we checked into our room, the room was clean, cozy and felt comfortable. There is the restaurant attached to the lodge. We ordered for in room dine in. Food was yummy and decently priced! Seriously amazing. I ordered the pig burger only taste just as good as it looks!!! I originally just stopped in to order something to go and then I open the food container and realize there's no way that I can drive and eat this so I sat out on the really cute deck and enjoyed the burger. One of the gentleman came out and offered a water. After talking for a few mins, he explained that the restaurant and lodge is also a program for recovering drug attic's, providing a great opportunity. The people and food were amazing! I would have loved to give this place 5 stars but there were a few issues that make me drop the score. My bf and I stayed one night while taking a little birthday weekend getaway to the mountains. I checked out the reviews and I was really excited to stay here! The place was super cute and cozy tucked off the highway. We got a king bed room, room #2. It was small, cute and overlooked the mountains out the bathroom window. Unfortunately upon walking in, the carpet was extremely dirty, stained and sticky to walk on, I didn't even want to take off my shoes. The bathroom was quite large and had a jetted tub/shower combo which was nice. The bed was very comfortable, but the wood frame underneath was broken and kept me/us awake all night due to the fact that the bed squeaked loudly with any movement. It had looked like someone knew about this issue but instead of replacing the frame they tried to rig something up with another piece of wood to "hold it in place". The walls and windows are also very thin and you can hear everything outside. Very disappointing to spent $130 for one night and the room was in such poor quality. We ate at the restaurant attached to the lodge for dinner, (we sat outside due to covid, which was fine because the weather was amazing). The place was very quiet, only 1 other costumer. We ordered 2 cheese burgers (cooked medium) with some toppings and fries. Our burgers ended up being cooked extremely well done (almost dry inside) and the fries were extremely salty. I wasn't expecting it to be fancy but how do you mess up burgers and fries? In the morning before we left we ordered coffee and breakfast burritos, which ended up being much better then our dinner. The burritos were actually larger than I had expected and pretty tasty. Overall it wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing like the other reviews say. read more

The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, the food is excellent and very affordable. It can be slightly tricky to track down the staff if you arrive late, but it's a tourist lodge, not a highway motel, so I don't think that's horrible. As three star hotels in the mountains go, this is a three star hotel in the mountains, and a fine one. That said, the place is run by religious fanatics who hold long evangelical church services with loud, out of tune singing in the restaurant--at dinner time, of all times. Then, when you pick up morning coffee, there's a TV preacher railing against basic public health measures like mask wearing during a respiratory virus pandemic. They do not advertise any of this, nor ask anyone if they care to be subjected to it. They just pretend it's normal. read more

It's a real lovely little lodge. We happened to get in a car accident a few miles away from here and stumbled upon it as one of our only options to bunker down for the night. The staff was super friendly and quick to offer much needed help. Also, the room was quite nice, the shower was magnificent and the rest of the room was simple but pleasant. What strikes me as being amazing about this place are the people who make it happen, oh, and the delicious food! This is a family run business, and you won't find nicer people than Adam and Teresa, Randall, and the kids who all help make this place a charmer. We stayed to celebrate our 1 year anniversary in October. The rooms are cozy & clean, and they've got a green mission in terms of the products they use to maintain the place. Still, we didn't spend a lot of time inside. Mostly, we enjoyed the main lodge area where there's an amazing semi-circular wooden bar, serving wine & beer, a TV room, an extensive DVD collection, a wood-burning stove, and the restaurant. The Rustic Table has a lovely view of a meadow that I can't wait to see covered in snow this winter when we return. Adam, the chef, will prepare your meal with attention to detail, and doesn't take offense if you make minor requests to change things up. He's enthusiastic about bringing local, organic & sustainable sources to your plate. We also discovered a great camping ground, with trails leading down the American River to some pretty spectacular waterfalls, and a secret swimming hole. As a destination or a stop along the way, you'll find authentic, down-to-earth people here happy to make you feel welcome and comfortable. read more

We were looking for a place to stay near Donner Ski Ranch. Google results looked grim. Sugar Loaf lodging was booked and nothing near Old Hwy 40 seemed suitable. I'm from the Bay Area (shout out to all the dirty hippies!) but truth be told, I'm kind of a princess when it comes to lodging. We started looking a little southwest of Donner Lake and lo and behold, Sierra Woods Lodge. We had a great time at Sierra Woods Lodge. Our room had everything we needed and the bed was super comfy. Free breakfast of oatmeal, fruit, juice and coffee in the am. Skiing at Donner Ski Range ($13 kid lift tickets. Holla!). Came back from skiing and had a really fun time hanging out in the bar/family room with the owners, their family and other guests. Dinner was great. The spicy mussels are the bomb. All and all - we had a wonderful time. Good company. Great food and lodging. We'll visit again with our family. read more

We were delighted by this place and the staff. They were very helpful and accommodating. Beds are comfortable. Quiet and serene . We did not hear any other people next to us. Reasonable price. Extra large shower. Plenty of Hot water. We had a great view of open space and hills. Clean! Very clean! Recently remodeled rooms. Overall great accommodations!!! My only CONS are : It was challenging to find their lobby reception area. By the way it is at the far right as you park where it says US post office. And I'm not a real big fan of one ply toilet tissue. However they stated two ply tissue clogs up their septic tank too quickly. No refrigerator or microwave in rooms. We brought our own cooler and they provided plenty of ice to us. We will be back!! Highly recommend. read more

Staff was very friendly, room was small but cute. Loved the shower! They had nice, large showers with beautiful tile, and rock floors - just beautiful. Our room came with a stand up fan which was nice. We couldn't get the TV to work, so they had to come get it working, then we couldn't turn it off, so we eventually just had to close the cabinet to the TV to get rid of the light. They have a restaurant on site, and we ate breakfast out on the patio. Coffee was free if you were a guest at the lodge. Food was decent. We would stay here again. read more

Amazing place ! Some old reviews don't count them anymore .. today is Jan 25,2019. I was looking for a good option of one night stay close to Truckee but not a share bathroom at a logical price.. this hotel is just above my expectations! Rooms brand new renovated (see pics).. and heater is the bedroom - already warm and cozy and smells amazing! The two guys Branson and Mat at the lobby super helpful and nice.. a cafe/restaurant which will check out later - after my amazing warm bath- is walking distance and open till 9 pm on Saturdays.. they offer house coffee when lobby opens at 7. Fantastic for me that need to check out early :) very pleased highly recommended my only worry now is that more people will book it and I won't be able to come on a short notice :) hopefully Mat and Branson will remember me :) read more

This place is kinda cute and very rustic decor. All the basic amenities and was clean and pet friendly. Good for a one nighter or lay over on your journey. Disappointed with the lack of masks by some staff members. They had to come fix the TV (they wore masks) And were very responsive. There's no coffee in the room, so I went to the lobby and they had non-operating coffee pots (why have them if you're not using them?) Front desk (no mask) directed me to the attached diner but there was a meeting going on, so no coffee for me:-( BYOB, they don't serve alcohol. There's an inviting fire pit but no chairs (I guess it's closed for the winter). The shower was big enough for two with a modern design with slate tile and a smoot rock bottom - so that was nice. read more

I stayed in the king suite which included a king bed, two twins, a pull out couch, living room, and a jetted tub. For $280 a night you would expect all the amenities to be fully functional. The jetted tub didnt work at all and the pull out couch had springs missing and wires poking through which could of caused serious injuries to my kids and made the couch bed unusable. I had to buy an air mattress for my kids to have a comfortable place to sleep. I have asked for a partial refund but they keep giving me the run around and telling me they cannot do that. I have raved for months about the great food and service at the restaurant which is amazing but the hotel staff is something else read more

We selected Sierra Woods Lodge as a location for an overnighter with a group of youth from our church. I could not be happier with the choice. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and cozy, and the restaurant next door (The Rustic Cabin) had an awesome breakfast/lunch menu; affordable huge portions, and very tasty. What really made this trip though was the exceptionally accommodating staff. You can probably imagine all of the commotion that comes with managing 17 middle school and high school aged youth, and the staff been over backwards to make sure everybody was happy, comfortable, and well taken care of. Amazing patience. They went as far as to plow "alleys" in the backyard snow for us to be able to have a snow day, started a wood fire for everybody, and even got involved in a snowball fight with our youth. Great people, great trip, and looking forward to coming often with my family. read more
