I think Silk Road is fabulous. I was there for dinner last night, sat outside on their covered patio during the rain storm and it was warm and wonderful. The service is attentive, not overwhelming, the food is wonderful and the prices are what I expect to pay for high quality meat and fish in downtown Walnut Creek. It does not have a fancy decor; it presents much more like a cafe. I had the lamb kabob meal with one generous skewer of chunks of lamb meat with saffron rice and steamed vegis. I asked for my vegis steamed. My son had the rack of lamb with garlic mash potatoes and vegis. His lamb came with 7 pieces and was in a demi-glacé. He felt the Demi-glacé was a bit sweet for his pallet. I tasted one of his and only got a bit of it and it was the perfect amount. It was very sweet, but with just a bit it was good for my taste. My lamb was delicious, tender and cooked perfectly. We also ordered the happy hour $5 for 4 dolmas. They were very good. I highly recommend this establishment. I never thought I would get good food all the way out in Walnut Creek but this place is fantastic! Came here after hiking mt diablo for an early dinner. They have quaint outdoor seating and the service was attentive but not overbearing. Kubideh rolls-I did not try these but the other folks at the table thought it was fantastic. Kubideh n filet mignon kabobs -This is the best filet mignon kabobs I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned n cooked to a nice medium rare plus. Kubideh was also comparable to my favorite kabob place back east. Lamb kabobs-very nicely seasoned but could have been taken off the grill a couple mins before to be considered perfectly cooked. It was done medium but still very tender. Tiramisu-also didn't taste this but the rest of the table thought it was pretty awesome. read more

Silk = Salty. I ordered the Falafel Sandwich and was quite disappointed. My friends ordered various dishes: the Pomegranate chicken - tasty; lamb kabob - dry; and the lamb gyro...which i heard was blah... Despite the over salted food, I really enjoyed their flat bread and garlic, dill, vinegar sauce. Very nice outdoor patio area but the inside had this ghetto lime green fluorescent lighting in the small bar area. Doubtful that I'll go back. read more

Went here on a Friday night looking for relatively healthy Mediterranean and it was great! We walked in around 9, were seated right away, and offered the happy hour prices on the appetizer we ordered (even though we didn't reference the HH menu). We got the ground lamb rolls - AMAZING. Easily the best part of the meal. Incredibly delicious and a very large serving - two big eaters and we couldn't finish it all. We both also got a greek salad, he with the gyros (really good, recommended), and I with the chicken kabob (pretty good, but the chicken was a little dry). Good hearty portion sizes, the salad was light on the dressing but delicious. Service was spot on, friendly and prompt and we didn't wait forever for a check. One star down because, being in WC, there were lots of families with noisy kids or babies, which affects an otherwise lovely outdoor patio ambiance. That said, when we went it wasn't packed and we were able to commandeer the next small table over to help handle all our dishes. Protip: The Kalamatas in the salads have their pits! I've still never figured out the distinguished way to get them out of my mouth and back onto the plate. read more

Silk Road is a small spot with no frills that offers up delicious Mediterranean food at a reasonable cost. The host/server was extremely kind and attentive- offering more bread and sauces without being requested to do so. The portions were large, but not overwhelming. Great service with personal touch with the guy who owns this place. Which you dont get these days any where. Food was really really good. We started of with bread, dolmas and smoked salmon. I got the grilled chicken with rice and my wife got the lamb gyros both were delicious. My kids had great time eating hamus for first time. I ate here last week while walking through the art festival being held in downtown Walnut Creek. I am not familiar with the area so I used the Yelp monocle to help find a restaurant for our party of five that included 1 diabetic, 1 lactose intolerant, and 1 w/ celiacs. Fun party, I assure you. Silk Road came up as being very close and with good reviews so we made our way over to it. I am a fan of Mediterranean food so I was going to be happy most likely anyway, but when I saw the outdoor patio they had me at hello. $5 all day happy hour and I was thinking it just may be time to move to Walnut Creek. While it did take an unusually long time for our food to come out, when it did, it was very good. And they kept us quiet by putting not one, but two huge plates of amazing bread with hummus and a garlic pesto type sauce. Honestly, I could have just eaten this and walked away happy. First, I loved the outdoor-ish seating. The waitress immediately came to help us. Second, the portions are huge. They give you laffa bread, hummus, and another dip right when you sit down which is great especially if you go really hungry. I shared one of the combo plates with chicken and beef kabob, rice, and veggies. Plenty of food to share for two. Also, we ordered one glass of the house chardonnay and one glass of the house cabernet and they were only $5 for happy hour (which is all day every day). Caveat: I've only gotten take-out lunch here twice. Pros: Food was tasty (especially the pita! oh man that is some good pita). Cons: Each time something's gone wrong with the check. First time, I went in with a $20 and they had to run out to get change (that has, to my recollection, never happened to me anywhere, ever). Second time, I got stiffed on my change (gave them a $10 for a $7.56 check, and got $2 back). Granted, 44 cents is not a huge thing, but it's like, come on, everywhere else gives change. I was going to leave a tip, to be nice so they'd like me if and when I came back, but now, I'm not so sure. (and wow, that sounds high-and-mighty! I just mean, I want to go back there and get food, but if $$ is going to be a minor hassle each time it's like why bother, I'll just get something else that I might not want as much but at least they seem to have a vested interest in keeping customers, you know?) So, yeah, pita good, music good, meat salty, ambience good, addition and subtraction skills not so good. read more

The standards are definitely lower in the East Bay. If this place were located in SF, it would be two stars. And in the interest of addressing grade inflation, I'm giving it two stars. As another reviewer recently noted, the service was underwhelming. They have a nice setup for eating outside, but I think they are getting by on the patio service. If they had to survive by serving everyone indoors, I think they would have gone out of business. We started off trying to have lunch at Pomegranate just down Main Street, but the service there was even worse (non-existent vs. underwhelming). When we were seated and then ignored at Pomegranate for over 5 minutes, we decided to try our luck elsewhere. The food at Silk Road was tolerable, but the presentation was unfortunate. You can get an idea by looking at the photos on their website. The Koubideh Kabob looked like something a large canine might leave on your lawn. That sounds crude, I realize, but it is exactly what it looked like. Maybe they thought it was still April Fool's Day. read more

As you can tell from my review of Pomegranate, I LOVE me some Gyros. I also LOVE me some value, and I LOVE me some unnecessary capitalization. Silk Road's lunch combos are great for those on the go that want to have all three meals at once. It's great to get so many different flavors in one meal and the fact that they bring out the Hummus AND the dipping mix for you earns them an extra "you go, girl!" in my book. The lunch combos are inexpensive, about $9.00, and they are more than enough food to keep you sleepy for the rest of the afternoon and get you fired from work for sleeping when you are supposed to be telling the airplanes which runway to land on. My personal favorite part of the restaurant is the service. Not so much the quality (although it's quick and friendly) but they have one waiter with a goatee and black ponytail that looks like one of the generic henchmen in a Steven Seagal movie. Every time I eat there I can just picture the guy pulling a knife out of the iced tea and putting it to my date's throat while I empty my wallet and give him my platinum chain - and then out of nowhere Seagal points a pistol at him and says "Did somebody order the hero (gyro)?" and shoots him into a giant bowl of hummus that was just being carried out from the kitchen for no reason. Because of this fantasy, I have eaten lunch and dinner there every day for a year because I don't want to miss it when it happens. read more

In all the years this place has been here, I have always passed it up! I do not know why, as I love Greek and all Mediterranean food. We went just a few days ago, and I loved it. I thought this place was Chinese food based on the name. I was surprised to find out they served Mediterranean food. The atmosphere here is pretty damn nice, especially if it's a nice day outside. You can sit and people watch in their outdoor patio. The food is pretty tasty and reasonably priced. The service was just OK. I never had my water filled up once. The Naan-ish bread they give you before your meal is amazing. So good, even if the flakes get all over the place. read more

i had food delivered from silk road from waiters on wheels. i know, risky, but it worked out well :) everything was fantastic!! serving sizes are impressive. -chicken skewer and beef koubideh combo: served with basmati rice, mashed potatoes, grean beans, carrots and broccoli. chicken is a little overcooked for white meat but both meats were tasty. beef was tender -lamb chops: from the looks of it, absolutely delish. there was none of it left and it disappeared quickly! the meat was good quality, juicy and flavorful. -grilled prawns with feta over spinach: nice flavor -dolmas; done right -babaganoush: wow, amazing. it was just smoky enough but also creamy, way creamier than others that i've had. YUM -tzatziki: again, wow. super thick yogurt, very thin slivers of cucumber they also gave us a very generous portion of pita to go with the meal. i would order from them again. and even stop in to eat if i was in the area. read more

On the high recommendation of a friend we tried out Silk Road. We had dolmas (the boy enjoyed, I don't like them in general) and hummus, which was delish! For our mains we had Mousaka, and Koubideh Kabab. The Koubideh Kabab was pretty tasty, but the Mousaka was greasy and fairly indistinct in the flavor department. It's not the quality I want for their prices, which really aren't even too bad:/ For those who drink, they're got really good happy hour specials! read more

Oh, how I miss Silk Road. When we lived in the East Bay, we loved going to the Silk Road for a relaxing lunch date on the patio. Now that we live in the South Bay, we have been struggling to find a place that comes remotely close to it. My favorites: a bottle of the sauv blanc (price couldn't be better!), appetizer order of hummus, pita bread and tabbouleh (delicious!), chicken kebab with saffron basmati rice and veggies, and thin crust mozzarella pizza. The service is top notch, and the food delicious. I love their patio too (dog friendly!) I need to find an excuse to drive back up to Walnut Creek -- I need my Silk Road fix. read more

I love the dip/bread you get when you are seated. Delicious. And you will taste it for the rest of the night. The mixed greens salad and the spinach salad are both tasty. The portion is bigger than I had expected, and they usually dress their salads well (most places overdress). They warm the walnuts that go in their spinach salad, a detail that I find delightful. My dad ordered the lamb shank, and I tried some. It was good, but very heavy. It's not something I'd order, because of the heaviness. I usually stick to the sandwich menu. I love love love the grilled chicken sandwich (though I usually end up eating it with a knife and fork), and I also like the gyros sandwich. Sometimes their tzatziki sauce is too minty, but not always. I like the outdoor seating. It's covered, so you're not completely exposed (nice when it's not quite warm outside), and they have heaters. The service is almost always great. This is probably my favorite place to eat in Walnut Creek. read more

Went there the other day to grab a lunch salad and capitalize on the free yummy pita bread and balsamic, olive oil, garlic dip. Man, after eating that dip your breath will be stinking for sometime, but it's okay with me cuz i love garlic and i'm not gonna go around making out with people after eating it. What I learned today: $6 dollars seems really cheap for a salad, but it's actually cuz it's a really small salad. Greek salad was good nothing special, but very tiny. If you are into Mediterranean you should def check this place out. However, good luck finding parking. There are a couple of parking lots around but sometimes it could be a long walk or full. Luckily we found parking down the street in a garage that only charged .50 cents/hour. Walking in we got seated right away. Decor of the place isn't that great, few tables (small tables I might add) and booth seatings around the resturant. During the summer the outside seating looks a lot better. Heck the tablecloth is a piece of butcher paper!!! After we sat down the waiter brought out fresh pita type bread with a balsamic garlic dip that had so much garlic my friend and I ate the whole thing! IT WAS THAT GOOD! The bread was the best part of the whole thing. Soft, yet still a little crunchy. We ordered off the pre fixed lunch menu. For 10 bucks you get Hummus, a side salad (either Greek, Caesar, or baby greens), a half sandwich (Greek burger, Gyro or Grilled sandwich) and Kabobs (chicken or beef.) After getting our plate everything was a decent size. Instead of a gyro I opt for a veggie sandwich. Everything was so good. The hummus had a little cumin spice, the salads had just the right amount of dressing and the greens where fresh and crunchy!! The pita bread was fresh and soft. The veggies that came in my gyro where grilled eggplant, zucchini, onion, bell pepper, mushroom, garlic & mozzarella cheese with a mustard cheese sauce ( I think). The lunch portions were enough but not over filling. The service was ok. The waiter did not check up on us and refilled our water after we were done with our meals. A big turn off. On the coldest of nights, sitting outside is not advisable. I had my back to the street and even though there was a powerful heater nearby, the plastic shell surrounding the patio didn't do enough to keep me warm. The restaurant has good food and the people working there really do want customers to go away happy. I had the chicken pomegranate and enjoyed every bite. The sauce was sweet and the vegetables that came with it were yummy. The best part was the garlic mashed potatoes. Oh my goodness, they were so warm, succulent, creamy, and tasty. read more

I would give this place 3.5 stars - I really only ding it because I am not a huge Mediterranean fan, but I do enjoy this place. I don't do gyros, but their kabob of chicken and rice, while SUPER basic, has a ton of flavor - their rice is so good!
