This place is an institution in Warren. Great food & service (family run business). I have only been here a few times during lunch and dinner, but every time the food has been great. I had the salmon kabab, which was amazingly tender and properly cooked (with crispy skin to boot!), and you can choose from 4 different rice (I recommend you try each at least once). If you're not sure, the staff is always helpful (sometimes the owner will give you advice too). The meal always starts with lentil soup, salad and a freshly baked naan bread -- hot off the oven. Ray and Ahmed suggested their natural juice, which I ordered their mix juice (carrot and orange). Let me tell you, you can taste the freshness and natural sweetness in every sip. For appetizer we ordered the house hummus which comes with their oven clay cooked bread! THEIR BREAD IS A MUST HAVE! We followed our dinning experience by ordering the Soltani Kabob- a double combo of lamb and shami kabob (ground beef), this plate is served with your choice of rice (we ordered Ladam Palaw (Green Rice)), lentil soup (very tasty) and their amazing salad, THE BEST (hands down). I couldn't lick the plates just as a manner of dinning out at this restaurant but I had to hold myself. To finish up this experience, we had to try their baklava. OMG! The layers of the fillo on top were crunchy enough to enjoy the bottom that was moist enough to not let me stop having another bite. The food here is SOOOOOOOOOOO great! Order the hummus. The only -- and yes only -- yet significant setback is the service. I have been here twice. The first time (two years ago), the place was not busy, as it was a weeknight. It took them 30 minutes to seat us. I was here for the second time this evening and it felt like we were invisible once we were seated. 20 minutes before anyone took our order. The meals came out before the hummus, which we ordered as an appetizer. Another 20+ minutes before we were able to get the check. We finally had to flag down a bus person. This was a first for me, but the Silk Road is definitely a decent place to eat out. The selection isn't spectacular, per se, but I love the rice selection with the kebab and the side salad and bread is to die for. I only have an issue with the lamb kebab I ordered (#14) in that one side of the meat was nearly burnt, and the other side was sticky... Yeah. The place is in a wonderful, quaint little square filled with a bunch of other fusion restaurants, so just for that it's a great place to visit. First off, let me say this is not the first time I've had Afghan food. If you've ever tried Kabab Paradise in Bound Brook or Parsippany, think of Silk Road as the refined version of their food. (Don't get me wrong, the food is great at both restaurants!) I've been to Silk Road a few times for their lunch specials with my coworkers. The restaurant is spacious with multiple dining rooms filled with unique decor representing the culture. Every time we've visited, there's been plenty of staff on hand. However, it seems like each table doesn't have a designated server so often times we've had to flag down a random server to ask for a refill or for our check (which is a bit of a hassle during a 1 hr lunch break). Also note that kitchen cook times can sometimes be slow depending on what you order and how busy they are. Now onto the food - on your table, you are offered an array of traditional sauces....try everything, especially on the delicious, crusty, Afghan bread they serve to you! My #1 go to dish for lunch is the mantu special with the rice with raisins and carrots. The classic Afghan rice with raisins and carrots is a delicious balance of sweet and savory. The mantu - a perfectly made Afghan version of a dumpling with beef and spices! If you're not in the mood for beef, you have to try the Murgh Kofta Kabob! The chicken is always well marinated, tender, and juicy! I've ordered it a few times now and Silk Road has consistently cooked the chicken perfectly! Looking to try an alternative rice rather than the classic with raisins and carrots? Because I'd totally invade this restaurant again. My wife teaches up the road at the local high school and just found this place searching for "food" here on good old Yelp. Craving a date night, we went, and oh man, we were happy. A note on finding the place: it's inside a sort of upperclass enclosed strip mall, so just pull in at 41 Washington Blvd. Trust me. That is, pull in after you head down the road to the strip mall with Rite Aid and get a nice bottle of wine. Anyway, we were without a reservation and it was about a 15-minute wait. I went to get the wine and the wife was seated just as I got back in. The menus are a bit limited but it's got good stuff. We started out with the mantu and were in freaking love. I mean, there was textural goddamn interplay at work there - this is what chefs aspire to in fancy-ass dishes. The bread was a nice fresh semi-tandoori thing that was thick, tear-away-able and made for sopping. The wife had a dish of okra in light tomato sauce, and I had a dish of lamb in a lentil sauce. Oh. My. Sweet. Lord. These were amazing dishes, and my words alone can't describe 'em. There was some kind of unique, full spicing that made it all so wonderful. They brought out a chicken dish to me instead of the lamb that I ordered, but the waiter was beyond apologetic and they expedited out a replacement. It was handled smoothly and gracefully, like a pro should. Good show despite the mistake - happens to the best of us, it doesn't affect our experience. You can see the roots of Indian food in there, without the heavy curriness. Which is great, but sometimes you don't want that much curry, y'know? We shared a dessert - custard without eggs, with tons of cardamom in there. My wife said it taested like Christmas, but that's just because a Norwegian Christmas dessert has lots of cardamom in it. You know, the type of place that makes you think you've left the sometimes hectic and cold world and entered a different realm - or maybe just a different country. A place that's family owned and operated, where the staff is warm and friendly and where the food is exceptional. This place is Silk Road. Entering the restaurant you are transported from the Warren outside to a wonderful Afghani outpost where the hosts are there to ensure your brief respite from the world is as magnificent as they can make it. I've been several times to dine in and take out and have never been disappointed. The lentil soup is as good as lentil soup gets. Make sure you try the appetizers. I'm partial to the cadu bholani and my wife loves the ashak so much that she must have at least two orders of it anytime we go. The entrees are also fantastic and the portions are very healthy. Regardless of which meat I choose, I almost always get the superb naringe palaw rice. The flavor of the orange combined with the Afghani magic they add is heavenly. Ok, first things first. I'm not middle eastern but I have eaten at plenty of middle eastern/,meditteranean cuisines etc...etc..., Turkish, Afhan, Lebanese, Greek. My favorite of all is Lebanese, in general Lebanese people can cook their asses off and it almost feels as if they are naturally good at it. That said, the family that owns Silk Road are just absolutely lovely people. I've been to Pakistan and have eaten some of the best kabobs I've had in my life there, mainly because the meats were organic and not bred from giant meat production farms as its done in the US. That said the kabobs from Silk Road are cooked to perfection, all the food was executed to a very high degree. I usually joke and try to write something witty in my reviews. The review that I'm doing is for Silk Road is very solemn. The restaurant by my NYC born and bred, son of a restaurant owner in the West Village that has served Kennedy's and WWF wrestlers is that Silk Road is the best Afghan/Middle Eastern Restaurant/Restaurant in general within a 30 minutes radius from where I live. This is without equivocation. The rice was cooked to perfection, the kabobs were perfect, the baklava as per my fiance was the best my fiance's ever eaten, the portions were more than generous, the hummus was great, the bread magnifico...oh my, the bread... The bread was very unique, underneath, their bread was naan like!!! But the top of the bread was pefectly light and crisp almost like the roti/puri bread that is served to you with a curry dip at Malyasian restaurants. The salad you can eat all day, its not a miraculous salad, but the kind of salad that won't offend anyone. There's only one type of dressing, you get the afghan sala and you're just content eating it. Its very homey. The soup they serve as an intro at the beginning of the meal is a spicy lentil soup. Its lentil soup with a kick. Soooooo goood! The dumplings with chives or scallions/onions are just out of this world. Everything is good here and I hope that it is an example of restauranteurs who open a restaurant and can stand up proudly and can say that the food we serve here can stand on its own with any restaurant anywhere. We were served few items that were complimentary: Lentil soup: It was good but not the greatest lentil soup. Salad: Excellent salad, probably one of the best salad in a afghani restaurant. Bread: Amazing, it was fresh out of the tandoor (oven). Let's move onto the entree's that we all ordered: Murgh Kabob (chicken kabob) Choopan Kabab (lamb chops) Combination #1 (lamb, chicken and shami kabob) Ghusfan Kabob (chunks of lamb) All of these entree's were very delicious and can probably go head to head with any Afghani restaurant out there. However, due to it's shear location, the items on the menu for dinner are very pricey compared to other Afghani restaurants. Also, the amount paid for the food didn't match up with the portion we were served. We all felt like we could've gotten more food for the price we paid. This is a great restaurant with great ambiance, good service and great food. One major flaw is that it is a bit pricey and the portion's are a bit light. When I used to work in the Warren/Basking Ridge area, I made sure I came to this spot at least once or twice a week for lunch. The food here is absoultely amazing. Their lunch menu features a complimentary afghan bread - hot, white, and fresh from the oven - lentil soup, and a small plate of salad to accompany your main meal. I always have their chicken murgh korma with spinach rice. The chicken is soft and easily falls of the bone, adequetly spiced, with the right amount of curry thickness. Another favourite of mine are their kabobs, served juicy and tender. If you are spice afacando like me, try their hot sauce to light up your meal. Our waiter was very attentive and took the time to describe dishes from the menu. Here's what we ordered: Ashak: Dumplings are nothing new but what ,ade these special were the spices that made the filling pop and the yogurt sauce that complemented it. must try! Ghusfan Korma (lamb on the bone) with Kabli PalawL maybe we overlooked the menu description but we had specially ordered it because we wanted something on the bone. Silk Road was my first Afghan restaurant, so take my impressions with a large grain of salt. Slow but nice service is rewarded with tasty, not-overly large portions of food. Afghan food sort of reminded me of a mix of Indian and Persian foods, and that assessment is probably offensive to all 3 cultures (sorry). The fun part is that you get to pick a special rice when you order; our table ended up getting all 4 varieties, and they all were tasty to me (although some were sweeter than others, so pick accordingly). She had the vegetarian ashak dumplings, which were very good. I had the murgh kafta kabob, which is ground chicken with excellent spices. We both recommend the naringe palaw, which is rice cooked with saffron, pistachios, almonds, and orange peels. One reviewer mentioned that it was too sweet. I think it balanced the bitter peels and salty kabob perfectly. The peppermint chai leaves something to be desired, but the shir chai is one of the best teas I've ever had. Believe the hype over this great restaurant. Silk Road is conveniently wedged into an awkwardly small strip mall among other low-end international fares, but this place stood out. The interior is beautifully decorated with afghan garb, dark reds contrasting blacks and whites, and very nice furniture. The staff were all very courteous and competent with all our requests. The service at the table was very good. Our waiter was quick to explain all of the pronunciations, the dishes, and how they come, as well as food pairings. He was prompt with bringing out our appetizers as well. The dinner comes with a complementary bowl of soup, chopped salad, and flatbread. Ours was a tasty split leek soup which tasted like it had couscous blended into it, but still light. The salad was very tasty, consisted of chopped green vegetables, tomatoes, and herbs in a light garlic/cilantro dressing, and the flatbread was hot and fresh out of the oven. I ordered a stewed chicken dish with spicy tomato sauce. The chunks of chicken literally fell off the bone and went great with a tasty sweet rice which was made with orange rinds and steamed pistachios. This place is tucked away in a strip mall and my husband and I totally missed it and had to turn around. Plenty of parking in the back once you find the establishment. The decor is very nice and intimate. It was late Sunday but we still waited quite a while even though there weren't a lot of people for some reason. Loved the complimentary lentil soup, hot flat bread and a very refreshing cucumber and tomato salad. Even though it's in the kabob section, my lamb and beef came out as patties. Regardless of the form, they are quite flavorful! The consistency is like a meatloaf but with spices in them. The rice with saffron has a really sweet taste and it's not what I'm used to but it's interesting. My husband ordered the chicken, filet and lamb kabob combo. I was only able to get a taste of the filet since he inhaled his food so fast. The filet kabob was very tender and juicy. Too bad I was only given a piece to try and no more. It's a little expensive consider the portion. They are mostly 20 something dollars and it comes with one kabob. All I can say is WOW! A friend recommended this place and though I'd not tried Afghan food before I was game. What a treat! We stopped in for lunch with a good sized group. Great service and quick food. The food was delicious. Like make you cry tasty. After so many bad meals at other place, what a treat to have food that is obviously made with care and attention to detail. YUM! The starters were hot freshly baked bread and a yummy salad plate of perfectly seasoned chopped veggies with a light vinegar dressing. They also brought out a sampler of lentil soup to whet the appetite. This is all included in the meal. I ordered a lunch plate of ground beef and lamb patties. The rice I picked was with almonds. It arrive and was perfectly cooked, juicy, flavorful and fantastic. The rice was fluffy and delicately seasoned. All that and it was reasonably priced too! The decor here is authentic and elegant, especially compared to so many other restaurants that think putting tables and napkins is enough. I can't wait to go back and take friends and family here.
