I really wanted to like this place after both seeing great reviews on yelp and hearing a coworker rave about Silk Road. I came here with the family a couple of months ago for a nice dinner out. I would really give this restaurant 3.5 stars, but I rounded up to 4. The ambiance is extremely nice. Colorful and full of pictures on the walls. Nice scent throughout. That was definitely the best part of our experience here. It seems like a great place to have a group dinner and share a glass or two of wine. We ordered a combination kabob and a shrimp kabob as well as a vegetarian kabob dish. For starters we had the yogurt drink and a lentil soup - they were ok. The kabob meats were seasoned well and tasty. There were however quite a bit of burned areas on the meat, as well as on the kabob veggies. The shrimp kabob was a bit under-seasoned though juicy and tender. The best parts of the meal were the bread, hummus, and the rice which came with our kabobs. The rice was absolutely delicious, especially the ladam palaw rice made with spinach. The seasoning and spices in the rice was really unique for me and memorable. The bill was a bit pricey for what we ate. Service was attentive and responsive though our waitress could have smiled a bit more (now I know how it feels when people tell me to do that!). read more

They really stepped it up last night, especially considering that the power was out for about 2 hours. The staff was great, very attentive, bringing everyone candles, escorting people to the rest rooms, and getting all the food right. The food as usual was excellent. Silk Road is a bit pricey. Expect to pay around $20 per person. That said, I have been here 4 times and their food, atmosphere, and service is phenomenal. Get any one of the 4 different types of rice and the chicken kebabs. My mouth is watering just writing this review. read more

I have to say, the last time that we were there in November, we were very disappointed in our food. This time, things were right back to normal. Everything was full of flavor and absolutely delicious! My two gripes with this restaurant are that they bring out your soup and salad at the same time. This makes me feel like dinner is being rushed. We specifically asked our server not to bring them out together. So they brought the soup first and then within two minutes they brought the salad. There's no reason for them to crowd the table or to make you feel rushed. I have mentioned this to them several times over the years and they don't seem to care. The other annoyance is that they charge you a fee to use your credit card. I understand that several places do that, but it should just be factored into the price of doing business. I feel like you were rushed and then to feel like you were getting nickel and dimes over your check is really frustrating. For years, they included the tip in your check and never told you. They seem to have stopped that practice for now. if you don't mind those things, you should definitely eat here because the food is always cooked fresh. The lamb shank is always incredibly tender and tasty. We like the naringe palaw (orange flavored rice) the best, but as long as you don't get the plain one, the rest are solid choices. The Murgh kofta and Chapli kebabs are always delicious as well. They bring a trio of seasonings to the table which definitely enhance the flavor of your dish. One is savory, one is spicey and one is a yogurt type sauce. We have tried several Afghan restaurants and this is definitely our favorite. Their family opened a competing restaurant in Martinsville called the Hills of Herat. The food there does not even come close to the food at Silk Road. We have never been to Afghanistan, but we have been to other places along the silk road and the food has always been delicious, I would have to say the restaurant definitely lives up to its name. read more

So I really like Afghan food as it is a simple and flavorable blend of Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Silk Road in Warren, NJ delivers on this theme in spades and with style. The restaurant itself has a warm and cozy feel, is elegant and best of all, doesn't get loud during large crowds (a failing of many restaurants today ... acoustics). The servers (we had three of them) were all helpful, friendly and attentive, including taking us through the menu choices and explaining the differences in spicing and flavors. The food itself is the real gem of coming to Silk Road. We had a variety of fare including kabobs, manshu, dumplings, bohtani (yes I know I'm mangling these words horribly), various rice, and teas (the teas at Silk Road are it's own small slice of heaven). Every morsel of every plate was just insanely good and immediately made this restaurant a must-come-back-to place for me. Finally the pricing is almost too reasonable, especially for a Warren restaurant. Great food, great presentation, great service, great ambience, and great pricing. This was my first time trying Afghani food and I really enjoyed it. The restaurant is very nice inside and the service was quite good. We ordered a variety of dishes and I enjoyed most of them, though I didn't like the Large Mantu at all (others did, but not me). I don't agree with the 4 and 5 stars given to this place. Also I won't give it a one star. This is an average restaurant with bland dry tasting food. If you are in NJ you will find a number of Afghan places serving better food than silk road. We were a group of 4. We all ordered the lunch option with different combinations of rice and kabobs... The kabobs we're mostly dry and bland.. also there is nothing great about the rice.. the meat of the tandoori chicken tasted stale... I would go with 2 out of 5 stars.. just an average place .. nothing that would entice you for a 2nd visit!!! read more

Although I have many allergies, nuts included, they were very aware and catered to my allergies very well. The lamb chops were well seasoned and had nice charred flavor. This review is from 2 years ago but needed to be reposted. My boyfriend and I came here for a late lunch (3pm) on a Sunday, which meant a dinner menu with dinner prices. First the lentil soup came out while we were reading the menus, and it was complimentary. The soup was pretty good, we both enjoyed it and it was a nice start to the meal. It would have been better if they brought it out after we ordered, because it cooled down while we were going through the menus deciding what we wanted. I got the lamb on bone which was in a stew with lentils and seasoning. It was in the 'kebob' section on the menu. The lamb was tender and tasty, and I liked the stew sauce and seasoning. Unfortunately, it was way too small. For 25$???? I expected a bigger portion, and was left hungry. It came with a choice of rice (I got the sweet rice which had saffron, orange peel and almonds, and was supposed to have pistachios but only had 3....). The rice was good. The bread that came out was good too, as was the salad, but again- for the price I was still left hungry and annoyed the entree was so small. The dish itself, I would rate a solid 4 stars. It was tasty. My boyfriend got the lamb and beef minced meat patties- chopli kebab. It looked like 3 hamburger patties sitting on a bed of rice. It was tasty, and well seasoned, with a little kick of spice. The burger presentation left a little to be desired. Last- I will comment on the service. For a Sunday, there weren't too many people there, and by the time we left there was only 1 other table. There were 2 people serving/servicing customers, and the service was pretty poor. They never once came over to ask how everything was. Not once. They didn't fill our glasses either when we ran out of water, and I had to look around and wait for one of them to come out from wherever they were hiding to ask them to fill the glasses. Last, when the bill came, we had another long wait because the guy was playing with his cellphone completely inattentive to the few customers that were there..so that was another long wait just to get him to take the credit card. They were friendly when they did come over...but they didn't come by the table enough to have been considered even mediocrely attentive. Bottom line? Food quality was good. Prices were much too high. This is a bit farther than I would usually drive for Take-Out but we'll worth it. Their Nan, dumplings, and skewered entrees are delicious and travel and reheat well. We order extra salads as they make great light lunches too. They cut no corners in prepping take out orders and the food is as plentiful as it is delicious. This place has such authentic Afghan cuisine (according to my Afghan friend). Me and a friend shared the Combination Platter #2 and the lamb chops were definitely my favorite from the platter. Super flavorful and tender. I also loved the mantu. Everything was packed with so much flavor and I like how they have so many different types of rice as well to go with the dishes. I haven't been here in some time, 3 years to be exact, so I was happy to come back with my wife and toddler daughter. The food is good and the portions are generous. Surprised at all the 5 star ratings..... Place is nice inside. Staff was ok ...a little too annoying if u ask me. The waiter kept trying to take my plate as i was still eating. Twice!!! Wtf!!! The young gentleman in the front was very nice though. Food was sub par...especially if you know what good Afghan food tastes like. Soup was decent. The food here has always been on par. So generous in portions... the SALMON is tender, flavorful, melts in your mouth. And the rice varieties are delicious! I had this place bookmarked for a while and met up with a friend of mine with her friends (Total party of 6) per invite and said let me scratch Afghan food off my to do bucket list. I have to say I was a little nervous but excited at the same time to try something different and new. Silk is everything you want in a casual sit down restaurant: For my first experience their was little to no wait, fair reasonable prices, good portions, EXCEPTIONAL food, and AMAZING CUSTOMER service. The staff for this restaurant are so incredibly warm and friendly and all the wait staff are always checking in on your meal or refilling drinks. If you are new to Afghan food like myself, the menu may be a little different but had some similarities between Indian cuisine such as tandoori meals and Naan etc.. Luckily, each menu item is accompanied by a description so you will find yourself having a difficult time narrowing down your options! My breakdowns below based my companies feedback because I didn't taste everyone's food and of course a: - Appetizers: "Mantu" steamed dumplings filled with minced beef & leek onions garnished w/ cooked lentils & homemade mint flavored yogurt. They said it was tender and full of flavor. The complimentary bread WOW is all I can say and the 3 sauces it came with all pretty good. My favorite was the white sauce out of the 3. If you have a party of 6 or more they will add a 18% gratuity also they will split the checks as well per request. Also they have a separate Vegetarian section with a total of 6 entrees and also had no trouble accommodating substitution request to accommodate preferred healthy options on certain entrees. You will definitely need use Google Maps because it is located in a little strip area of restaurants. Plenty of parking and they have Wifi although I didn't ask for the code and used my 4G, My experience was way better than my expectations by far. we are long time customers of what had been our favorite afghan spot in the area. we always had great meals and service from what appeared to be a well-run family owned business. our last two takeout experiences were extremely disappointing and it appeared they changed ownership, pricing and chef given the lower food quality. the pricing is now high to ridiculously high--$20 falafel entree for 5 dried out pieces the size of tater tots. Walked into this restaurant on a Sunday night and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful decor and romantic atmosphere with candlelights making it the perfect date night spot. This is an upscale place so it is more dressy even though there is no dress code. We ordered the Potato Bolani as our starter which was delicious but bite sized so you might want to order two for a bigger family. For the entrees we ordered the Murgh Kofta kabob which was ground chicken grilled to perfection and simply delicious. I ordered the Chicken Kabobs which were boneless chicken pieces marinated in spices with the Kabli Palow which was my favorite but they do offer 4 types of rice to choose from. The sauces on the side compliment the dishes and lentil soup well. I would try the white sauce which has a tangy flavor and the green chutney is delicious. My mom ordered the spinach dish which was disappointing and bland with no flavor making it hard to eat. Overall, food was way over priced for the chicken and a vegetarian dishes costing $19 per plate but the portions are reasonably. Tip: no need to order an appetizer since they give you huge fresh baked bread with some lentil soup and salad. On to dessert we ordered the baklava $7 which came with two pieces and the top fell right off as soon as we put a spoon into it. The filling was delicious but only at the bottom and not layered and was missing the honey drizzle that is usually on the top. For this reason I'm going to have to bring my review down to 4 stars. The service was excellent and the staff was attentive and on point in serving us the entire way. I also had to order the Shiri Chai because I was really excited to try this! It's not Pink Tea if that's what you're expecting but hot black tea with cream, sugar, milk and simply delicious. I would say this is more of a dessert drink and they gave me a medium sized to go cup which cost $6. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere and food was grilled to perfection but just way too overpriced. For the price, you get a great deal because you get their bread, soup, and a salad in addition to your main dish, which is a significant amount of meat and rice. Short story: Okay food, DREADFUL service. Long story: 1) Only half of our group received their entrees. The others waited half an hour, then had to re-order because apparently they never even put those orders in. By the time they got their meals, we had been seated for over ninety minutes already. Then, no one checked on us again until almost an hour later. 2) We had about four different servers over the course of our meal, none of whom seemed to be communicating with each other. We asked for menus twice, we asked for water three times, we had to practically beg on our knees for the check. 3) We were informed they were out of several things 20-30 minutes after ordering those things, then not provided with menus to re-order. The food was honestly good, but unmemorable. What is tattooed on my brain is the slow, disorganized and indifferent service at this place. We were in the restaurant for so long, I had to throw out my leftovers due to FDA recommendations for poultry. We were there so long, I had to use the bathroom twice.
