Had breakfast here on a Saturday AM (just as they opened for the day) right after picking up a post-red-eye-flight friend from nearby IAD. Our options included: A) find a hotel restaurant and pay $25 for powdered eggs; B) go into the District and partake in all-you-can-eat-and-drink brunch buffet and mimosas; or C) find a diner in the DMV area (harder than it sounds since this isn't NY/NJ). Nonetheless, we found this SD in Reston (after getting off the Dulles Toll Road and losing our toll-free ride back to MoCo). The vegetarian huevos are excellent (if you are into eating kale and quinoa topped with eggs at 7AM on a Saturday morning...). The tortillas were crisp and appeared to be baked rather than fried in corn oil (no complaints here). The DC area is known more for late-morning brunching rather than early-morning traditional breakfasts and it was nice to have a Silver Diner available for traditional breakfast. read more

I was here yesterday for breakfast with a friend and I was very impressed by the menu choices and the healthy approach this restaurant takes. The waiter, Domenic was very nice and went over the menu with me which includes low calorie and vegan choices. Despite the cook misinterpreting my order and accidentally eliminating the ham from my omelet, Domenic immediately apologized and had my order fixed and brought me out an entire new plate. I was very happy to see a sea salt grinder/shaker on the table as well as a pepper grinder, organic ketchup and Welch's Natural jellies on the table! (containing no high fructose corn syrup) Whoever decided to incorporate these healthier options has the right idea!!! As a previous reviewer points out, they have redone their menu to emphasize healthy and local. This is great for marketing. But the truly healthy options are limited, and beyond that, my guess is: high fat, high salt, high calories -- but hey, that's why you go to a diner right. OK, I'll grant them that. But it fails on both fronts. For healthy, the steamed vegetables are disgusting and have no flavor. For decadent diner food, I have had better for the price. They do throw in all sorts of kids specials (to offset the high prices), which makes it a draw for people like us with small children, but not enough of a draw to come back here often. read more

I mean, it's a Silver Diner. So there's always that. But this place will always hold a place in my heart just for the fact that my friends and I have been coming here since high school. As a result, there are a whole lot of memories associated with it. Everybody knows that SD does a good (enough) breakfast at a cut-rate price, but their dinner menu is actually good, too. Their burgers are all good, and their chicken club melt is amazing. I also like their meatloaf- it's much better than you'd expect. Good fries, also. One last thing- all SD's shakes are good, but recently (well, somewhat) they've added something called the Vietnamese Coffee Bean shake which is, quite honestly, awesomely amazing. Try it. First off, I have to say it has been a couple months since I've been to this silver diner AND granted, it was for late night grub. So maybe that explains why the food had always been fairly decent?? I kept coming back for their bread pudding mainly to accompany my meal. That's usually what made me return for breakfast food late night. So today, I took my parents here for brunch and everything we ordered was bland! The caramel French toast was a large portion but there wasn't any flavor!! Not even butter or cream to accompany French toast? It was dry toast with caramel drizzle and two eggs ordered over easy but was way too runny. I guess it was busy, but the quality and taste was mediocre. One thing that was exceptionally bad was the coffee! It was so watered down... What a way to start a breakfast/brunch, huh? About as good as diners get. I have had a number of breakfasts there, and they were hearty American diner breakfasts, well served, and on warm plates. I order what I want, even if the combo is not on the menu, and they do not blink an eye or overcharge. The one warning is remember to tell them not to put the crapola seasoning on any meat, e.g. steak and eggs. And it's a diner, so expect diner coffee and there is no espresso machine. read more

I can't say enough about the Silver Diner in Reston. I had not been here in a long time and was amazed with the healthy choices that are now on the menu. It is endless!!! The food is fresh, delicious and worth every penny. The service is great as well. I try to come on Saturdays with my son and the wait is never more than 10 minutes or so. The parking lot can get full but you can find a spot. I also never feel rushed to leave and I love the jukebox. Now I just need to come back for lunch or a late snack. I went there solo on a Sunday morning to get breakfast. It was very busy so I sat at the counter. I ordered a coffee and the corn beef hash with poached eggs with the yolk liquid. The coffee came and it was very strong, more like Starbucks versus my favorite, Dunkin' Donuts. Since it was so busy, I understood my breakfast taking 30 minutes to be delivered. I could quickly tell that my eggs were well done, almost hard boiled so I promptly told my server to bring out two more eggs. It literally took 20 minutes to deliver 2 properly poached eggs, meanwhile my breakfast was ice cold. Such a disappointing first visit to the Silver Diner that gave me no reason to return. read more

Dont know whats up with this place..this past year, the service has gotten terrible and the food very inconsistent. The servers...wow, they try so hard not to looked pissed these days. The last time I was there, I wanted to tell the guy to at least pretend he wasn't mad because my little kids could tell right away he wasnt going to be "friendly." Prior to that, I wanted to tell our server to stop throwing our things down so hard and at least say something when you bring things or take things away. I was THIS tempted to call the manager...but whatever, they need to really be on top of those things...its not rare, it happens regularly. I have never been to a restaurant that does not know how to cook eggs benedict. They did not poach the eggs, they were fried! When we mentioned this to the waitress, she seemed confused. We came at the recommendation of the hotel desk and immediately changed our weekly plans to include breakfast here. The prices are reasonable, the food is great and the staff is helpful and friendly. The food is all local when available. Portions are appropriate, I didn't walk out with a sense of shame or an overwhelming need to find the bathroom. The biscuits & gravy are made the right way. The goat cheese omelet has tomatoes that look like they came right out of the garden. The only 'con' seemed to be the breakfast hour on the weekend was busy and we got the impression the cook was a wee bit rushed. Food quality suffered a bit. Solid 4 stars experience. Food is very consistently good here. My go to order is the pancake breakfast - definitely some of the best diner style pancakes i've ever head. Lots of vegan dishes that taste great, just not super filling (at least for me). Wait staff is always polite and attentive. Also recommend the flat iron steak which is always cooked to order. Food is a little more pricey compared with other breakfast joints, but what you get in return is higher quality food. read more

An old colleague and good friend of mine who recently moved to West Virginia suggested we meet in Reston, Virginia for lunch on a weekend. Reston?! The thought of venturing that far into Virginia frightened me, but then I thought -- why not check out a new restaurant? But, as I searched around, I didn't find many vegan options in Reston -- maybe I just didn't look in the right place. But, after having such a good experience at the Silver Diner a year ago, I figured that would be a solid place to meet and so we did. Back in 2013, the Silver Diner expanded their menu to many healthy choices including lots of vegan fare. It was surprising and exciting at the same time. You can read my first review of that menu here. Since then, the menu has continued to evolve and continues to add lots of fresh vegan options. So, we met at the Silver Diner in Reston. It looked the same as the others -- the retro decor inside and outside makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. We were seated at a small booth that did not have a personal jukebox -- oh well. The menu showed that they still had lots of vegan and gluten-free options. Set on trying something new, I ordered the Teriyaki Glazed Portabellas for $12.99. I just couldn't turn down the opportunity to have farro in a diner! Farro is an ancient grain that is difficult to find. It is hearty and filling and I was pleased to have it here. They placed three teriyaki glazed portabello mushrooms atop chipotle seasoned farro with garlic, cremini mushrooms, asparagus, butternut squash, and scallions and garnished it with cilantro and black sesame seeds. This is not the typical diner fare, for sure. It was absolutely delicious and a generously sized portion. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of salt used. The dish wouldn't have needed much salt at all, but this dish tasted like they dumped tablespoons of salt in it. It was way too much salt. But, besides how salty it was, it was really good and for what I got, $12.99 seemed like a fair price. The service on this Saturday afternoon was particularly slow and we finally had to flag down the waitress to get her to give us our check. I didn't care that much as we were there to catch up and were too enthralled in conversation to let the slow service bother us. Other than that, it was a great experience and Silver Diner could easily become my go-to lunch spot. read more

I have been visiting this restaurant for about eighteen years now. Not only with my family, but with my school's drama department as a post-show celebration hot spot. This restaurant has changed vastly over the years, most notably in prices. Silver Diner definitely gives off a genuine diner feel inside, complete with a jukebox at every table, but the prices suggest otherwise. Want some maple syrup on that short-stack? Think again. That will be $1.50, please. There are plentiful healthy options and fare for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free eaters alike here, something I appreciate. Still, the lackluster food mixed with teenager-unfriendly prices causes me to routinely look elsewhere. Their milkshakes are a local lore, but with an eight dollar price tag and local dives, the popularity has dwindled. I do not recommend their bread pudding, but their other desserts are palatable. I recommend visiting if you are looking for a night out with healthy-ish diner food. read more

I have been going to Silver Diner locations for a few years now and have always been a fan of them. I have to say the best part about this is the milkshakes and the atmosphere. I have had multiple food options at this location and they all seem to be pretty good. My most recent visit was no different, the food was cooked well and brought out rather quickly and the waiter was responsive enough to what we ased. OMG. I guess I haven't been to Silver Diner in a while, and recently took some friends there for what I thought would be a basic breakfast. Wow, was I in for a surprise. As several have mentioned, they have switched their menu to a new organic/locally grown menu. I was amazed, and the food is spectacular! I know a few people have complained that they want food the way it was... blah blah blah... if you want that, go to the other "diner" in Herndon. The food here is fantastic, and I had one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while. I will definitely be eating here more often now that I know that it has a much better menu! read more

Good local food, great local staff. I went here with my high-spirited and delightful niece and nephew. It's a favorite haunt of theirs. Spaghetti with marinara and a side of apple sauce is their dish. We enjoyed the hospitality orchestrated by the dynamic duo of Carlos and Victoria, who were lively and quick and filled with good recommendations. I am 63 yr old man. I have had "fish and chips" in its many variations at dozens of places over the years. I can honestly say that I have NEVER had WORSE. Greasy, fish pieces too small, too much salt. My wife had a BLT. She said it was "adequate," Later she revised it to :mediocre: The kid had hot dog and mac&cheese. The hot dog was sliced too small, and way overcooked. The kid wouldn't eat it, and he'll eat about anything. Service was okay. read more

I have visited this Reston location several times over the years and mostly had an ok experience. But they are clearly not prepared for operating under COVID19 conditions even though it is almost mid-June now. The curb side delivery experience is below par compared with other restaurants in the area. First, they still bring a paper printout of your card payment to sign - you have to touch their clipboard, pen et al. No touch-less payment option here. Second, your order is not checked for completeness. Normally I don't, but for some reason I looked into the bag to check. (Glad I discovered before returning home). When I informed the delivery person of the missing item, it was brought out but without a hint of apology or the courtesy expected at a restaurant. On the contrary, I was given the impression that the restaurant was doing me a big favor by delivering at the curb. Probably the person was tired or overworked in these hard times, but it certainly is for the management to ensure that its service staff knows it job. I know times are hard for restaurants, but some are approaching it the wrong way - jacking up prices ($7.50 for a small vanilla shake?) and skimping on service. read more

Boy do I find some really odd types of restaurants in the DC area. Organic Chinese and now a diner for a health conscientious person. I'll admit the food is on the good side. These guys use local produce, some organic vegetables....and also have organic ketchup on the table. It's an interesting concept b/c you never associate a diner with health. Anyway, I was thinking of having the breakfast menu but instead I tried the chicken burger ($7.99) and added in my mix of cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes etc and had a substitute of onion rings for fries. Total came out to be around $10 and for the price and quality, it beats out on all the average chains out there like TGIFs and Ruby Tuesday's (one notch above). They do sell local beer brewed in VA (couldn't recognize what they were) and that's quite cool. The ambience of the place is great (it's much better than any diner that I've been to). Just remember that this place is very popular on weekends as a post-drinking hangout spot so u may need to wait a bit during late hours of the weekend. read more

Silver Diner has changed a great deal from when I was a kid, but honestly in most ways for the better. It's elevated a lot of its menu and ingredients, but still does up the classics well. It still has that standardized nostalgic touch and feel that makes for a fun outing. Its a fun place for children and easily accommodates groups of 6 or less. The wait (especially on the weekend) can be a pain, but they move quick and efficient whenever possible. The seating is booth style for the most part, but there are tables and bar seating as well. The food is tasty and comfort style, and I honestly always go for the bison rancheros or Country Fried Steak. Their burgers and shakes are also great. Okay, so Silver Diner has always been decent in my book. I'm not a huge fan of diners...they're kind of just like an Ihop that warps you back to the 70's or something. I want to know who thinks it's okay to put juke boxes on the table with extremely annoying and outdated music on them? I think I'll keep my quarters to myself, thank you very much. Anyway, so the food. I have always eaten either breakfast or some sort of sandwich or entree. I wasn't really sure what I was feeling until I turned to the first page of the new menu and there was a huge emphasis on breakfast items. Also, the menu emphasized the restaurant's use of items from local farms, gluten-free options, and healthier meals. I was instantly geared toward the American breakfast-- eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and a biscut. I ordered a pancake too. I was totally not expecting my meal to be half as good as it was. You can't really mess up eggs, but I didn't think it was possible for them to taste THAT good either. And they did not jip you on bacon like Ihop frequently does. The pancake was awesome, too. Not too sweet, not bland, just right. It was the perfect breakfast meal. I wish there was a Silver Diner in Loudoun County, because I'd be there all of the time for breakfast food. I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of the sandwiches and entrees on the menu...but there's a 99% chance that it's probably just because I'm a picky eater. The service was excellent. We were instantly greeted and seated, and our waitress was a sweetheart. They have changed a bit in terms of the menu and offering a wide variety of healthier items. A nice retro looking diner across the street from Reston Town Center is great for a late night food outing with friends. The staff is overall friendly, service is pretty fast, and the food is pretty good. I had the chance to try the new peanut butter pretzel sundae and it delicious! Vanilla ice cream with cinnamon whipped cream, caramel and pretzels! A friend had a steak omelet and it was stuffed with steak so if you love breakfast food and steaks get that! read more
