Sadly, most dim sum places aren't very good. Silver Fountain is no exception. While I did find the food to be moderately good, the service was pretty poor. In terms of the food, everything that was steamed was moist, and everything that was supposed to be warm was evenly heated. Additionally, items like the porridge were really flavorful and good. Nevertheless, the service could really use some work. First, the service was extremely slow. The carts hardly came around to me; I waited nearly an hour just to eat a few items. I also asked for lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice, which they said they would get for me. However, I left after I got tired of waiting. Second, the service was not very accommodating. Since I came here alone, I ordered their smallest bowl of porridge. However, they gave me a giant family sized bowl of porridge and explained to me that they only offered it in one size. I don't get the reviews or the frequent mentions for this place. I feel like my experience was opposite of what everyone else has posted. Service was more than acceptable, but food was lackluster. I came here to check out their dim sum quality and really had my hopes up. I'm sorry to say that almost all items were pretty mediocre. Granted I didn't come on the weekend when things are likely fresher, but still. Omasum, other than being super gingery, super bland. Shrimp dumpling/har gow, bad all around (mushy skin, beyond acceptable level of fishiness), radish cake/lo bak gou also super pasty. Only saving grace was the Soy Sauce Chow Mein. It was a little tweaked compared to what I'd normally get in NYC, but strong wok hei (smoky wok flavor) and a good balance with the fragrant vegetables. It was the only thing I took home. Service was also pretty good and friendly. Maybe it's different when they're mega busy on the weekend, but I did still come during their weekday lunch rush and all the ladies were pretty nice to me and other tables. It's definitely 1 of the better Dim Sum restaurant around the area. 1 of the thing I really like about this place is you can order the Dim Sum dishes if you don't see the food that you want coming around in carts. I usually just order it through the owner; He's very nice and attentive. The dim sum food's pretty good & fresh. They have quite a bit of selections as well. I especially like the hot sauce in this place; It's spicier and better than most places! The only bad thing I could say is that their Turnip Cake's way too soft; It needs to be crispier. This is home base for dim sum for me. Good quality consistent dim sum. We go here pretty often and will probably continue to indefinitely. Only problem is that it takes a while to get the carts to you sometimes. They need to work out a more efficient system to get everyone a chance to get everything. Also, you may find yourself waiting for a specific dish that never comes out, but you can ask them to special order it. This is now my favorite dim sum place in the area. The food was truly amazing and authentic. Not overly greasy nor salty at all (i.e. not 'Americanized'). Some may say call it 'watered-down' or bland, but that's because they have become accustomed to the oversalted/overseasoned servings created for the typical American palate. The restaurant was filled with Chinese people, old and young and every age in between. Lots of family. Portions were substantial and they actually used good sized shrimps in their food (shrimp dumplings). The turnip cake (luobo gao) was great as was the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves. Prices were better that the other places I have been in the DC area thus far (i.e. New Fortune in Gaithersburg, Good Fortune in Wheaton, Tony Cheng in DC). The only negative as echoed by other yelpers is the service. It is slow, very slow. They definitely need more carts (had only ONE steam cart, that's inexcusable as so many of the good dishes were steams (har gows aka shrimp dumplings, steamed pork spare ribs, shu mai, Steamed shrimp rice crepe/rolls aka har cheong fun, sticky rice in lotus leaf aka Lo Mai Gai, etc.). Obviously, you can get around this problem if you order directly from one of the server who will go into the back and bring out the freshest portions, however, this can be quite difficult if you don't speak their dialect (Cantonese). All that said, the meal was still very good and thoroughly enjoyable and we will definitely be back! WARNING! Silver Fountain & Good Fortune are among our favorite dim sum places. New Fortune used to be good, but besides the trek out to G'burg and the quality of our food the last visit, we'll stick close to home. The wait to be seated can be ridiculous if you get there anytime past 11am (we always have a min. party of 8). The last few times we've experienced huge lag times in food coming out...which means we get full on a little bit of food. No joke there were 15-20 min. lag times between carts the past two times we went. Still, the food is good and worth the wait. We used to be totally loyal to Good Fortune, but the quality of the dim sum here has started to draw us over. Still, both restaurants have dim sum dishes better than the other...so, for now, we'll frequent both. read more

The servers here might have been some of the worst I have ever seen. First our party of 5 adults and 2 children were seated by the host at a nice table by the front window with a tablecloth. A server then came up and told us we had to move to a nearby table because the first one was reserved. After looking around I noticed no tables in the restaurant had tablecloths except the 2 empty ones next to the front window. Amazing, they were keeping those there so it would look nice from the outside but they weren't seating anyone there. In an hour and a half nobody was seated at the 2 front tables with tablecloths. Second we tried to order the pork belly but we were told we would be wise to pick something else because it takes too long to cook, and the waitress gestured at the crowd. Third, when the waitress brought us extra napkins I tried to tell her we wanted another order of dumplings. Midway through my sentance she turned around and walked away. The order did not go through. Fourth after we got our food we were completely ignored until we managed to hunt down a different waitress and ask for a check. Our original waitress was avoiding our area and eye contact for the better part of half an hour. The food was admittedly good, so they get a star for that. However, with so many restaurants out there that will go out of their way to serve you, I see no reason to ever revisit Silver Fountain. read more

Literally do not come here. My husband wanted to surprise me and his mother for Mother's Day brunch. He did his due diligence calling others around the area including Far East at 10, and this place promised that they would be able to get everything done before 12 (noon), and just for us to come as soon as we can. It is now 1pm and my husband has been waiting this godforsaken place for over 2 hours. There is no manager. I woke up and he had to call to explain to me why he was gone for Mother's Day, waiting for food that he isn't sure even exists given how undermanned this place is. Their phone line conveniently doesn't work right now and voicemail box was full. I had to tell him to give his phone to the front desk lady who speaks Canto (given my husband doesn't), as i needed to tell someone that this was unacceptable and they are just trolling my husband at this point. They had ignored him the multiple times he tried to ask for updates on the food. At this point he is watching people who came AFTER him to dine in, leave the establishment because they they are DONE eating. After i busted out my Canto on the phone to express our frustration, they conveniently had our order done in less than 10 minutes. They ruined our Mother's Day, as my poor husband with the best intentions literally waited all morning and early afternoon for food that they clearly did not have when they told us to place the order. In total my husband waited 3 hours. Three ridiculous hours. I grew up eating dim sum my whole life, from west to east coast. I know how a dim sum restaurant should run. While I support small businesses during this pandemic, this establishment is a joke, and should never have opened dine in (or delivery take out) at that. They have no idea how to manage a place, and literally there was no manager or sufficient staff. my best advice to you, DO NOT dine here. Went here for Dim Sum with family and our large party was seated very promptly. Almost no waiting but I contribute that to the amount of people - they readily had a larger table for us in the back. The service was pretty good typical busy cart routes. A lot of people expect to be waited on hand and foot but that's not how these types of restaurants work. The carts came by at a steady flow and I didnt feel like the place was cramped even though 90% of the restaurant was full. As you should do in EVERY place you go out to eat, check the utensils, chairs, table, etc... for dirt or anything that looks out of place. The fried squid here is pretty good. I typically do not enjoy this dish but I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised of how good it was. (Then again you fry anything and it automatically becomes tasty) Lets get this straight, the rice noodle roll with shrimp is not a fucking crepe. It is called Chee Cheong Fun or Har Cheong Fun. Loosely translated to shrimp rice noodle roll. Everything seemed fresh and tasted great. The place looks nice but there is absolutely nothing fancy or stands out. Just basic. These types of places are pretty plain but the food is great. The location is pretty good too! The shopping center has typical strip mall stores so you can do some shopping after to get some small goods, haircuttery is near by so you can get a trim after. After discussing with the fam, we will continue to go here when we want dim sum. I'm not too sure about typical dinner though but will probably give that a try once. I love the ready-to-serve dim sum dishes that are pushed around on steam carts by servers. I've gone to Silver Fountain many years and I have to say, I really haven't ordered anything that was bad. The service on the other hand has always been crap-tastic but it's like that at most chinese restaurants anyways. I always order the jasmine tea which is always good. My go to dishes include: the shrimp dumpling (ha gaau), shaomai (with pork and shrimp), rice noodle rolls (with shrimp or roast beef), Phoenix claws (fung zao), spring rolls, Taro cakes, AND EGG TARTS! Come here for the food, but if you are expecting great service forget about it. Don't be afraid to wave a waitress/waiter down a couple times if you want something. read more

This was my first time to Silver Fountain. After seeing my friends' social media posts about the restaurant, I had to try it for myself. We arrived right at 11AM on Sunday AM when the shop opened, thinking that we were the first ones. However, much to our surprise, other families were already there and seated and eating! TIP: arrive early as possible, by 12pm, the place was packed. Clean dishes and polite servers. Not often do you have BOTH (or either!) qualities at an Asian restaurant. So, that made our experience more enjoyable. The dim sum was nothing too crazy or different from other restaurants in the area. Typical plates include: ha gao, shu mai, fried taro cake, crab and shrimp claw, cha siu bao, churn fun, etc. TIP: request to sit closer to the kitchen entrance. This way, you're the first to select the dimsum as it comes fresh out the kitchen. Tables further away, by the cart gets around to you, either have been picked through or there's nothing left! They have almond jelly for dessert. My absolute favorite -- so cold and refreshing! You MAY have to personally request from a server. $50 for a table of 4, including chrysanthemum tea. We arrived here for a 1 pm lunch on a Saturday, and had various dim sum dishes. The restaurant was bustling with traffic and there were many Chinese patrons there with a sprinkling of other non-Chinese faces among them. Since we aren't Chinese, we had to ask in english which dishes had which filling and the waitresses were generally helpful in that regard. The majority of the items that we had consisted of various dumplings in various skins with a filling of either pork and shrimp, or a combination of both. We also had two variations of a bun filled with a sweet roast pork filling. I think we had around 10 or so different dishes total, and were totally stuffed. Best thing was that the entire bill including an over 20% tip came to around $34. Can't beat that. read more

Le-git. Having just moved from NY/NJ where I had the most incredible dim sum all the time, this place is a good, solid, legit 2nd place runner-up to that. It's the best dim sum we've had here in the DC/Balto area so far. The quality of the food is outstanding. I give it 4 stars b/c the variety isn't as great as what I'm used to, but you will certainly enjoy what you get. It's also more friendly on your wallet than in NY/NJ so a definite plus. Unfortunate but I have to rate this place 2 stars. I recently moved to the Aspen Hill area and thought I'd give this place a try. Went with my wife and 2 toddlers. The host walked to a table literally dropped the menus and and walked away. Walked by a few minutes later and I asked for a high chair. We ordered a dinner for 2. Which is 2 soups 2 apps beef and broccoli, sesame chicken, fried rice and 2 small ice creams for $24. At this point it was 15 later and still no high chair asked again twice and it finally came with the food. The wonton soup was the best part. Then after that it went downhill. I dont think I've ever said this before but the rice was the smallest portion ive ever seen and actually the worst ive tasted almost tasted reheated. The kids didnt even touch it. We basically took everything home to see if maybe my sister would want it. I've been here a couple of times for dim sum only. It gets packed after 11:30am but if you get there at 11am, you should have no problem getting a seat. The service carts are fairly slow, esp for the stuff that everyone wants like ha gao, xiu mai, etc., but they really seem to be going for better customer service. The owners son (?) stopped by several times to make sure we were ok, brought water without having to ask, and even brought us the items we were looking for since we were almost done and didn't want to wait any longer for the carts to come around. The food is fine but what annoying is they add an extra marker on the order sheet to charge more. We ordered 10 items and it's clearly marked on the order sheet. It's easy to estimate the cost roughly. When they returned my credit card, the charges were much higher than expected, so we asked for clarification and they showed us the order sheet. It was the worst restaurant experience ever. Not even exaggerating. These people have zero idea about customer service or food quality and all they care about is the money in our pocket. My friends and I wanted to have dim sums. Uninformed, we went in after dim sum hours, but instead of turning us down, the server invited us in with broken English mixed with Cantonese and told us to get things we wanted and she would check with the kitchen to see if they could still make them. However, she was being very rude when we were ordering and refused to get us the very few options of dim sums that we could get. She claimed that it was not worth boiling a pot of water for just a couple servings of dim sum and demanded more. We gave in and agreed to double the order. She also claimed that they ran out of one of the items so that we would ask for something else instead, but miraculously presented us with the original order so we would end up purchasing both. If this is not enough, when we asked for to-go boxes, she snickered and grumbled about why we even need them. What really pissed me off was that when she handed us the check, she secretly added ten more dollars for reasons not explained. Is this even legal??? My friend paid the price she listed and told me not to fight with them and turn to the power of the internet instead. Therefore here I am very pissed about the experience and I would beg no one to go there for the terrible terrible service and the very mediocre food that was loaded with MSG. read more

The carts kept going the opposite direction of where I was located. I tried to ask several waitresses and the owner if I could order from the menu but they refused to allow me even though I saw them take orders from other tables and delivering their dim sum dishes. I requested water a couple of times but didn't receive it until 45 minutes later. After an hour and only able to get a total of 4 small dishes, I gave up and left.
