This place has the best dim sum in the Rockville Area. Personally, I think it's better than Far East and tons better than China Garden. However, it has not figured out how to do online ordering. Those that don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin might be a little intimidated to order. You can dine in or do take out. Because of COVID, my family has been doing strictly takeout. They take orders via phone or in person. They have lots of paper menus for you to order from or point and circle in person. The lady on the phone is juggling a lot so be patient. It is worth it. Silver Fountain, the new restaurant with the greatest and most authentic dim sum this side of the Potomac River. Ever since the closure of the great and wonderful Oriental East in Silver Spring, this place has been filling the void and our tummies. I should mention that Mrs. Li, the former owner and operator of Oriental East dines here at Silver Fountain on the regular. I had dined at Oriental East since I was a child, and now followed Mrs. Li and many others over here to Silver Fountain. I love their dim sum! My wife loves their chow fun! Next time I go, I will have to try the Peking Duck. It's one of my absolute favorites. I love that they have an authentic Chinese only signboard specials menu. I'd like to come with my Chinese friends so they can tell me what I may be missing out on. Often the most authentic food is only on offer in the native language. So when they pulled out the original paperwork from the carry out menu. Which we took pics of. So there's 2 pages, if this was your restaurant and your menu, WHY WOULD YOU NOT LOOK AT THE BACKSIDE OF YOUR OWN MENU? How is it my fault you didn't see the back page? And you had the Audacity to ask if I wanted to wait longer after paying more $$. Even though she said just 10 more minutes for what we're missing, NOPE, not waiting anymore time, refuse to pay them anymore money in addition to what we already paid and tipped (before all this had happened.) So I wasn't going to post a review but after my experience on Mother's Day I feel like I have to share. I've been here a few times during the dinner hours on Sunday nights and the food is good and comes out timely but the service has been poor. Even when we've been one of maybe 2 or 3 families eating in the restaurant, we really are never checked up on again after our order is taken. So you have to find your waiter to ask for anything. This honestly didn't bother me too much, but my experience on Mother's Day was really something else. The picture I posted is from a time I came for dinner, not on Mother's Day. Mother's Day was too stressful and disappointing to take any pictures tbh I don't think I have ever seen worse management for a restaurant in my life. We came here for dim sum on Mother's Day and the restaurant was completely jam packed. There was a line out the door with people waiting for their take out orders while there was only one person at the front desk who was sorting out the take out orders, answering all the phone calls, and responsible for seating customers who were dining in. This lead to a terrible traffic and no one being directed to seating. We saw no one helping us so we honestly just sat at the one table we saw open to dine in. I saw people just leaving the restaurant without their take out order because they were so fed up. And another person even asked for an order of someone who had already left because they had been waiting for so long and it looked like the kitchen lost her order. That's just the mess with take out. On the dining floor itself...it was hard to watch and hard to be a part of. With quite a large restaurant, there was only maybe 3 waitresses and all of them looked SO stressed and overwhelmed (understandably!!). It was frustrating because we had to chase down waitresses to even put in our order and had to wait so long for simple requests like forks, knives, and water. But at the same time, I understand how hard it was to remember and meet our requests when they each probably had 10 other tables making requests of them. Looking around, I saw nearly all other families around me frustrated and upset at the poor service. Once we finally got a hold of a waitress to put in our order, the food came out at a decent time. The food was good overall but the har gao (shrimp dumpling dim sum) shrimp was mushy and not very good. The dumpling skin was okay though. But I'm ending this review with what pissed me off the most. There was an old lady who came to dine in that day who was sitting alone and she didn't understand how the menu worked and she didn't understand Chinese so she went to the neighboring table to ask for guidance. The neighboring table kindly helped her and I saw the old lady circle the items on the pink take out menu that she wanted. When she returned to her table, a waitress saw her circle on the pink menu and snatched that menu out her hands and told her to write on the white menu and just ran off. No explanation on how the white dim sum menu worked, no asking if she needed help, just utter rudeness. Thankfully another patient waitress came around and did her best to help this lady. Overall, the terrible service (probably resulting from HORRENDOUS management) was just so hard to watch and be a part of. Good Cantonese food and dim sum that's fairly priced is becoming pretty hard to come by in Montgomery county but even though Silver Fountain has decent food, I would not suggest this place to anyone. I hope the manager or boss or whoever is in charge starts hiring more help and treating their customers better. read more

The staff are rude, ambiance is lame, nobody to greet you when you enter, I had to get my own napkins and silverware because the staff did not provide it, and on top of that when I ordered the lo mein it took far too long to make. I had to watch my family nearly complete their meals before mine arrived. I was so hungry and frustrated I left and got Chipotle next door and took the lo mein as leftovers. Lucky me (and bad for my pockets) living up the street from a quality dim sum place for so many years. I would, quite literally, roll out of bed on Sunday and get ugly glares from families dressed in their Sunday-best. Oh well, all for the love of dim sum and then some. While the carts can take awhile to get around, all of the quintessential dim sum dishes are hot, flavorful, juicy, aromatic - just like they are supposed to be - once they make their way to you. The har gow, shu mai and cheung fun are my favorites. Ending with a steamy pineapple bun is the only way to do it. Compared to China Garden, which some hail as the best dim sum in the area, I still prefer Silver Fountain. It is less pricy as well. Need to find me on Sunday mornings? Never coming here again, the service was bad the food was cold and we managed to only eat 3 items, for a group of 4 ppl that's not enough. They would not come around to serve us, we waited for over 45 mins. We felt that we were not receiving the same attention as other tables did. Dim sum on a Sunday. We made a reservation and our table was ready for when we asked. It wasn't very busy when we arrived which was a surprise on a Sunday so we thought for sure we'd have our dim sum fast but this day we waited and waited and waited for carts to go by our table for at least 20 minutes or more. Finally when a cart came by it barely had any food on it and the carts just seemed to disappear. One table finally walked to a cart at the back of the room and got their own food from the cart. On this particular day service was painfully slow. Again it wasn't move than 1/2 full and we saw many servers just very few carts and minimal service. While I often expect less than stellar or warm service here, on my last visit it was by far the worst. Most of the food that we had was warm however lots of the same dumplings came out over and over again. The variety was far less than previous visits. If you aren't a shrimp or pork eater, then you'll likely have very little to eat here. It is dim sum however realize that you won't have much dim sum if that's what you're looking for. I used to go here every other month when I lived in Bethesda and haven't gone for several years now that I moved to Virginia. I doubt I'll make the trek back there after this last experience. Food My family and I have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years, today was the most disappointing day. ( side note we have been ordering the same dishes for the same amount of time) Quality decline was exponential!!! The fried soup noodles that were brought to our table were drowning in grease. I've gone here for dim sum and banquet meals since I was a little girl. The ownership since than has changed recently and it is kind of obvious in the way the place is now managed, and food quality. Given that it was Mother's Day and Covid, I knew there would be a long line and wait time so I had opted to carry out. It was horribly disorganized with people leaving due to long wait times. Like you couldn't tell who was here to pick up, order food, or waiting for dining service. This was because they literally didn't hire enough people to work today, there were people going up to the bags to see if it was their name. We waited two hours to get our order. I don't know if this is common now but it wasn't like this before. The food itself was ok, it seems like the things that used to be steamed are now fried. The skin for the crepe noodles and hagow are definitely super thick and not that great. It just doesn't taste as great as it used to. For instance the custard bun used to be circular shaped like an actual bun, it is now half the size and in a moon shape. The food was generally meh and its not just from having to do carry out. I was very disappointed in this place. My family used to go there all of the time. The people that work there have gotten very rude. It is like they are doing you a favor. I was told that they are owned by the same owner as Oriental East. Can someone confirm this? Anyway, dim sum is dim sum. They have a few dishes that are good, and the rest are all whatever (this applies to all dim sum though). My favorite is the shrimp noodle crepes. I advise you just order those directly from a server because by the time the cart gets around, it's usually empty. Or better yet, come on a week day and just order what you want. Very average dim sum experience. However, for a dim sum trip during Covid, I gave it an extra star. The service was really slow, but I don't blame them because of having so little business. They had all the usual dishes but there was nothing that really stood out from the rest. The rice rolls were really thick instead of being paper thin, the shrimp dumplings stuck to the steamer because of a lack of wax paper and the fried dough fritter were really dense and lacked the airy feel.
