Cute little bakery that has tons of options for pastries and bread. I only had their tiramisu and eclair. The tiramisu was super delicious, but the eclair was bit lackluster. I had heard alto about this bakery. I have been off sweets for a month but decided to give my self a treat after a 5 mile walk. I only ordered a espresso and nepolian. The Espresso was fine, but the supposedly flakey layers between the sections of the pastry were way to thick and hard. I could not break them with a fork. Ordered two Sourdough Baguettes while I watched one of the bakers over knead a boule of dough before it was proofed in a banneton. The flavor our baguettes was good. Although the dough was over mixed and under fermented. This resulted in poor crumb structure and a very dense final dough. Was not worth the calories. read more

My go-to place on the UWS. My husband and I come here every Friday and Saturday morning for a coffee order and a sweet treat. The coffee is always fantastic and the baked goods are out of this world. A favorite of mine is the chocolate Madeleine - crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. This summer they also offered fruit cheese danishes that we are so excited to have brought back. And don't even get me started on their gourmet offerings of cakes, cupcakes and tarts. There are literally no bad choices. The staff are incredibly friendly and are taking precautions to keep everyone (staff and customers alike) safe during COVID, including masks being required and limiting the store to 2 customers at a time. I live close by and pass by this place every day on my way to the subway. The delicious smell coming from this bakery presents an extra challenge for me getting to work on time every day! But when I remember their prices, I manage. They have a good variety of yummy breads and I love their palmiers, but don't really like their cakes (they look great but taste kind of meh), and much less the prices of them ($37 for a smallish/medium one). They have much better and less expensive at the Garden of Eden market 2 short blocks up. I'm a chocolate person myself, but when my SO buys fruit tarts/pies from here they're always a social success. I come here often when I'm working and they have a nice array of breads and pastries to buy. I have gotten the sourdough bread a few times and it is pretty crusty around the edges but really soft inside. It's a sour as you would expect a sourdough to be and I was genuinely pleased. My favorite thing to get from here is the milk bread. Soft, sugary, and filled with raisins. The kids at my job love it and the adults equally love it. They only have it certain days which makes me sad but still worth the wait and walk down to 105th. read more

Imagine this: it's Sunday morning, it's pouring rain out, and you're freezing. You go looking for a sweet treat to brighten your Mothers' day (or Sunday in general). You come across this bakery with a line out the door, so it must be good, right? We wait in line for not very long at all. We order two muffins and some cookies. Perfect. The day can only get better. You carry your to-go bag back to your apartment to find that the muffins are incredibly dry with almost no blueberries, which seem to be necessary for a muffin to be considered a "blueberry" muffin. Disappointed, you go for your cookies, hopeful that they will be better. But wait - Whatever the person ahead of us had ordered had been packed with our muffins! I felt terrible thinking that this might have been a special treat for someone's mother on their special day, but, after trying a bite, I didn't feel so bad anymore. Walking past this bakery on a quiet day, (March 22nd, 2019) the name caught my attention. Stopping in, the smell of bakery hits you. Topped with bakery items are many choices of breads and pastries, as well as bagels. The order of chai and a muffin was great, service was good. The chai tea was okay, not knocked out of the park not the worst and the muffin was good as the same. I like the outdoor seating, liked the close feel of everything inside, just nothing screamed "This is amazing!" Definitely worth the stop and plenty of selections to choose from. read more

No, I didn't travel all the way from my downtown apartment here. But I hosted a rooftop dinner over the weekend and friend brought a key lime pie from here. BEST KEY LIME PIE in the city! If I dine out, I generally prefer having dessert at a place that...well.. specializes in desserts. My staple is Pasticceria Rocco's, but today there was no time to head all the way down to the Village. Lunch was at Macchina at 106th and lo and behold there's Silver Moon on the corner. I always get excited to see such a bakery and generally am always disappointed. Not this time. The selection is small but delicious. Both the peach tart and plum crumb were tasty. The coffee was acceptable too. What really excited me was the variety of breads baked there. I had to take one home. Perfect crispy bread is perfect for any time of day. I know what I'll be having for my late afternoon snack. Read the charming story about the owner in the window. It makes it even more enjoyable to sit outside. Well it is passed midnight. Driving home I see the long load of fig and black pepper bread in a white bag I had to try it. So I just bit into it like an apple and then I couldn't stop. Summary - Went here on a spur to celebrate the birthday of a friend. It was the worst idea ever. We had a terrible customer service experience. Cake was non-tasty, meringues were too sweet. Returned our cake without eating much and left to find a better celebration spot. Full review - After reading the other positive reviews, we thought we had found "the" place to get a cake to celebrate a friend's birthday on a spur! Turns out we couldn't be more wrong. The bakery has no tables to sit indoors. It was a tad too cold to sit outside, but that's what we did. We chose the Opera cake (layers of vanilla cream, mocha, chocolate). There were three folks behind the counter. One of them was unfriendly, the other two were really nice. We told the unfriendly guy that it's our friends birthday, and would it be possible to write something on the cake. He told us "Our chef is gone, so we can't." It was about 6pm. So we said we could write something ourselves, and just needed the cream pen. He hesitated and then said the chef packed everything before he left. We asked if they had a candle. No. Plates? No. (This last reply was interesting, because it says on a page stuck to the counter that they have ceramic plates!) We were all throughly put off by this time. We didn't want to spoil the experience for our friend who had the birthday, so paid for the cake, went to the tables outside and cut it. Cake was hard and crumbled at the cuts. It was difficult to cut pieces out of. It tasted ok, definitely nowhere close to what the other reviews led us to believe. It didn't feel like it was fresh, so I went back in and asked (the nice guy this time) when it was made. He said it was baked this morning. Finally after everyone was thoroughly disappointed by the cake and the service, we decided to email the owner of the place and tell them of the bad experience. That's when I noticed a refund policy for dissatisfied customers. I told the unfriendly guy that we didn't like the cake at all. He simply turned away from me. On my first visit my Chocolate Brioche was a little stale but delicious. It intrigued me enough to return and try more pastries. The Pretzel is one of my favorites. Today I tried the Cruffin. Really, really delicious. One of the best pastries I've eaten in a long time. It's a cross between a crossaint and muffin. It's dense and flaky at the same time. With Silver Moon (SMB) and La Toulousaine being the two main bakeries available in the neighborhood, it is definitely better than having Hot and Crusty or Dunkin Donuts as your sole source of breakfast-on-the-go options. That being said, it does not mean the options one have are all that memorable. As a fan of pastries, I find SMB offerings to be rather mediocre. The brioches suffer from excessive frosting, and texture is often harder than it needs to be. The quality of croissants is very inconsistent and are often too sweet by being over-stuffed with almond paste. I am sure the breads are excellent judging by popular demand, but as one that often likes to grab a pastry on the go, I'd rather trek to midtown to a Financier Patisserie or Pret A Manger instead. Moreover, SMB pastries are actually more expensive than bake shops in midtown. Lastly, the staff could use a lesson or two on making a good latte or Americano, which really shouldn't be that hard. Maybe the beans are not fresh? After multiple visits, it is hard to recommend any beverage other than tea and (mediocre coffee). Scratch that. Just the tea. read more

Brioche options for days! We indulged in the currant cream cheese and apricot. The currant cream cheese was by far my fave with its coarse sugared top. I'll have to try the famed chocolate chip one on my next visit. Cornbread muffin? Sure why not. It made me crave a bowl of chili. The soft pretzel made me second guess every time I thought the ones from LaBrea Bakery back home were actually good. Iced coffee, LARGE 24oz and oh so good. I'd go back just for an iced coffee it was that darn good. The inside is snug and there is definitely back up at the coffee condiment station. If people didn't take their sweet ass time equaling up their bevies then it would be a much better place. No seating inside but there is an outside section with tables and chairs. I was slightly confused if we were allowed to sit there as their is a sign that said "tables are for table service only". I never once saw any workers from inside go out and "wait" on any tables but I did see an empty table with a guest check. About a year ago, my friend was studying for exams when her boyfriend persuaded her to take a break. Slightly irritated at the distraction, friend followed boyfriend to pick up sandwiches at Silver Moon and strolled over to Central Park. When friend noticed boyfriend wasn't eating his sandwich, she offered him hers, whereupon he offered her a ring and asked for her hand in marriage. Fast forward a year later, and friend (now wife) takes me to her "engagement sandwich place" to send me off with a full tummy as I head off to the airport on an important trip, after visiting her and boyfriend-now-husband for the first time. Most certainly, the emotional value colors my opinion of this place. But despite being pre-made and pre-packaged, my mozzerella, sun-dried tomato & pesto sandwich tasted fresh, with big slices of sundried tomatoes and thick slabs of cheese. I would have appreciated a warm toasted bun, but the sandwich travelled well in my chaotic travel bag, and would probably be a good grab-and-go option if you work or attend school in the area. I don't know if I'd make the trek for the sandwiches, but I may be back to try the delicious-looking sweets and pastries. And for the sentimental value. read more

If you're looking for a great bakery on the Upper West Side look no further than Silver Moon bakery on 105th St. and Broadway. The staff is always super nice and attentive, and the bakery 's prices are relatively reasonable. Everything I've ever tried from here has been fantastic and it leaves me wanting more every time. Sometimes on the weekends however expect to have a line but it is totally worth it. My favorite things from here are the sugar-free cookies if you're looking for a not-so-sweet sweet treat. A co-worker of mine surprised me with the red velvet cake for my birthday a few weeks ago and I have been thinking about it ever since. I normally do not like red velvet cakes from bakeries because they are usually dry, too sweet, too dense, and too crumbly. But Silver Moon does it right. The red velvet cake was the perfect red velvet consistency - not too dense, moist, and not too sweet. Every forkful was intact and didn't fall apart before putting it into my mouth. You can taste the buttermilk. The cream cheese icing had the perfect sugar level. Reminds me of the red velvet I make. :) Now that I found a place that has a red velvet to my tasting, I've started to recommend my friends to get their red velvet fix at Silver Moon whenever they bug me to make a batch to satisfy their craving. A first-rate bakery with delicious goodies and bread. The Linzer torte, brioches, muffins, cookies, and come to think of it, everything I've ever had, actually, has been fantastico! But I feel like I'm getting great, wholesome food for my buck, so I splurge a little bit when I'm in the area. (Okay, spending $5 when I think it should be $3.50 doesn't seem like much of a splurge, but nevermind that.) The outdoor table service is nice, that is to say, it's nice to sit at a table and eat outside, but it's usually busy and you have to wait, and the people waiting to replace you at tables when you're finished can circle like buzzards. And the chatty waitstaff (I'm thinking of one guy in particular) is strange and akward and slow. I advise bringing the great food back to your place and enjoying it there! Speaking of, serving sizes are pretty generous here. Why the 3 stars? Don't get me wrong, the tiramisu was amazing, but I couldn't help but be put off by the service. It looks sooo good from the outside: breads on display in the window, so that passersby are compelled to stop and enter. This was me today at lunchtime. Sadly, I think that the same crabby man waited on me as he did another Yelper, Ankita. There wasn't a line; there wasn't a mad crush at the counter and yet homie was coarse and abrupt. I was almost tempted to ask him if he were trying to make me leave w/out a purchase. So, I knew that I wanted a particular bread, and ordered it straight away, but, as my eyes scanned the confectionery counter, I had to stop and ask what a few of those tasty chocolate treats were. They were tear-dropped shaped and divine-looking. So, I asked the crabby dude what they were and he said, "chocolate candies." Uh, no shit. This is MY FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD BAKERY. they're (morning staff) is just amazing. Jennifer, Viv and Felix are my GO TO for my coffee. I love they have a vast non dairy selection for vegetarians as myself. They have the best cheddar chive scones, the breakfast sandwich is one of my favs, they also have amazing gazpacho!! AND in the colder months their tomato feta soup really hits the spot. Everything is baked fresh DAILY. You can literally see them making the stuff. Sometimes depending on the time you go there's a line but never to where you're waiting too long! I love that (although dogs aren't allowed inside) they're very dog friendly. Will give me a water dish if I'm ever just hanging out with one of the pups I walk, they made doggy biscuits that they ALL GO CRAZY OVER. Oh and how could I forget!?
