First you have to get the permit, but if u leave the restaurant, you must move your car. *Even though we place a permit in our car, after we eat there, we took a walk along the strip mall and when we came back, all 3 cars in our group were towed. *The owner and manager of silver seafood tried their best to protect us, but they were helpless from those towing companies as they only rent the parking lot. *Highly recommend this place for food, but I'm sure the reasons they are not busy is because of parking issues. read more

Best Chinese food I've had in Chicago. I like that this place has two menus: one standard American Chinese food menu, and one Chinese Chinese food menu. As a result, you can get everything from boring beef and broccoli to stir fried duck tongues. Great variety. I wish I ate fish or seafood obviously, but even if you don't the land animal fare is outstanding as well. The Food: flavorful sauces that aren't to oily. I've had beef dishes from the Chinese menu both times I went and I've been impressed both times. My companions had a fish dish and a shrimp dish and were blown away (and one's an old school Brooklyn Jew so he knows his Chinese food to say the least). Well made soups are important to me, and this place has it. The food goes easy on the salt, but I can appreciate that. There's the old saying: salt, sugar, and oil are masks for poor cooking. It's not burdensome to add your own salt if you even need it. Ambiance: Typical Chinese food restaurant. They've got plastic over the table clothes, which is odd, but I can understand since the way most Americans eat Chinese food (often in a humorous attempt to use chop sticks) leave sauces dripping from even the ceiling. No complaints; I'm more into the food anyway. There's a small stage with a table on it. I asked about it and I got a polite but uninformative response. I still have no idea why there's a table on that stage. Service: Well, both times I went the place wasn't too busy so the service was good. When you get there-- Before driving around to look for a space, get a parking permit from the restaurant front desk, and park next door in the shopping strip. Or public metered parking is available behind Just Tires. Or park on Broadway after carefully checking out the signs. The Food --- A mostly veggie dinner with family. My (Chinese) family in the Uptown area has always relied on Silver Seafood for authentic Cantonese cuisine and dishes with distinct flavors (no one sauce fits all here!). They very accommodating when it comes to low salt, low soy sauce, light sauce, no MSG requests. Last we were there, we got Japanese tofu with King Mushrooms, Watercress stir fried with garlic, soft fried pan fried noodle (mushroom), and fish filets stir-fried with yellow leek. Each one had its own unique taste and was served promptly. We asked nicely for Veggie Egg Rolls with no MSG ("we're ok to wait if it is possible the kitchen can do it") and they were light and crispy and very good. Chicken Satay is usually cooked well done but was decent and jelly fish was good as well. BTW there are dimsum smaller dishes a la carte. And there is no loud music or TV playing in the background. My family loves the food here, and I would highly recommend this rather under-rated (among millenials and yuppies LOL ) restaurant. read more

Okay so you'd never know it from the outside, but this is some of the best szechuan Chinese food you can have! Outstanding! They should change the name because although seafood is on the encyclopedic menu, it certainly doesn't make up anywhere close the majority of options. The food is fresh and delicious. I ordered the sesame chicken and good grief, you could tell the chicken was cooked that day and hadn't been sitting under heat lamps or came out of a frozen bag with "chicken cutlets" on it. The food is okay, the authentic Chinese food was seasoned well but there wasn't a fantastic factor, just average as far as that goes. After attending a party we were famished and were looking for something to eat and there was Silver Seafood...so we ventured in. Food was very good and the portions were very plentiful. Conveniently located a block or two from the Argyle stop on the Red Line in Uptown's Thai and Vietnamese-influenced 'Chinatown,' Silver Seafood is a fine example of authentic Chinese cuisine. The menu truly befits the word variety: everything from amphibians (frog legs), shellfish (abalone, sundry sorts of crab, oysters, shrimp, lobster), fish (tilapia and others, prepared in many styles, from whole and deep fried to spiced and sauted), game birds (pigeon, quail), beef, and poultry, to aviary housing (there is a section of the menu devoted to birds nest dishes, though one wonders whether it is an ingredient or serving implement), and animal rights activist provocations (a bowl of shark fin soup will set you back at least $60). But the trick is to get the stuff prepared right. A dichotomy between the authentic and the americanized exists at a formal level (they have a menu for each) and at the informal (even if you order from the Chinese menu, there's a good chance you're in for a disappointment). My girlfriend and I , duly forewarned to steer clear of the americanized menu, ordered what we thought seemed like signs that we wanted the Chinese shit, but our quail, green onions and ginger, and our tofu, black mushrooms and bok choy both (sounds tasty, right?) swam in same the oil-spill-inspired brown "sesame" sauce - diluted from a jelly concentrate (there are always globs of the stuff left from a hasty stir) that one associates with beef and broccoli. I suspect they automatically give Americans the Americanized version of whatever it is they order. The two Asian tables' dishes looked fantastic, totally a world apart. First time visiting this delightful restaurant early on a Friday evening. You can't beat free parking in Lakeview and that's what got us there to begin, with after a friend's recommendation. I would not recommend that people to go to this restaurant. I normally don't write reviews about any places that I go dining. This is the first review that I write to tell people how bad the food and service is at this restaurant. A couple days ago, we ordered 5 to 6 dinner set meals to celebrate my dad's death. In Chinese tradition, we would go to a restaurant to eat after the funeral with close friends and family. Since we didn't have an exact number of people of who would be joining us for the meal, they told us that we could change the number of tables before we came to the restaurant. It was a rainy day, and less than 40 people were joining us at the restaurant. After the funeral, my sister called the restaurant to tell them that we were on our way from Rose Hill Cemetery because they told us to give them a call so they would know that we were coming soon. The person who picked up the phone never ask her to confirm the number of tables we needed. In 15 minutes we all gathered and confirmed that we had a party of only 38 people. We said we only needed 4 tables, but we were given 5. I understand that there was a miscommunication between my sister and the person who picked up the phone. What I am not happy about is that the lady named "Jenny" said that it was too late to change the number of tables at that moment, so we still had to pay for 5 tables. She said that the 2 lobsters for $58, fish dish for $29, and the soup for $36 still needed to be paid for at that 5th table. We don't know about this until we paid the bill and saw that we had to pay $123 extra for 3 dishes only. Since this was a seafood restaurant, I expect other customers would be here for the lobster and fish. They couldn't even keep the 2 lobsters and the fish for a customer who would come later in the day. They just wanted us to pay the extra money for no reason. If people dine at Chinatown in Chicago, they would know that the 2 lobsters only cost $26.99 in most restaurants. You can see the big sign "2 Lobsters for $26.99" at Golden Bull Restaurant. I think this is a rip off restaurant. I picked this restaurant earlier because it was close to Rose Hill Cemetery, and I did not want to have everyone drive all the way to Chinatown. I will never go to this place again. Also, the lady "Jenny" gave me an ugly look and didn't say thank you when we left the restaurant and terrible service with a 15% tip. If people want to pay extra with this kind of service they are welcome to go here. read more

I went to Silver Seafood twice a couple years after writing my first review and it's actually pretty good here! One time we did dinner and the other time was dimsum. They have reasonably priced family-style dinners according to how many people are in your party. The portions were generous as we were full by the end of the meal and also took the food to go. The dimsum was really good as well. I thought that the size of some of the dimsum was larger compared to Furama's. You have to wait a bit though since they don't do the cart thing. I also like that parking is available in the neighboring lot, just don't forget to get your red slip! read more

Fried chicken with salt & pepper dip is like crack chicken to me. They are open pretty late so you can go after drinks. I see that most of the bad reviews are by people who don't know real Chinese food and are the ones that probably think Panda Express is authentic. Silver Seafood offers a good number of selections at somewhat reasonable prices. The ambience makes me giggle - clearly the owners invest more in the quality of the food than in dining room decor. Which is fine by me. I've found the food to be blessedly lower in salt as compared to other Chinese restaurants. I'm a fan of the soups, rices and beef/veggie dishes. Can't say anything about the seafood, unfortunately, since I'm allergic to seacritters. I've had their take out, delivery and table service in the last few months and have had good experiences every time. Table service is brisk; they get you in and out without a fuss. I've never ever had a delay in receiving service. Our take out orders are ready quickly, and delivery is always prompt. Not to mention accurate, too. Please do yourself a favor, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Wow, this place was really bad. I had very high hopes, given the zagat ratings and reviews posted on the window. When I entered, I asked the lady at the counter, what was one of the dishes mentioned the review. It was albane with mushrooms, and I had never heard of albane before. She responded with everyone knows what albane is, its albane. She also had a horrible attitude when I arrived and seemed to be arguing with everyone in the restaurant. Nonetheless, I ordered the oysters with black been sauce, shrimp with walnuts, crab rangoon, and shrimp fried rice. During my wait, I went over to look at the lobster tank. The water in the tank looked green and disgusting. As I was watching the lobsters, I saw the lady who waited on me at the counter spit in the garbage. Then I noticed that there were multiple garden hoses coming out from the sewer drains. Although I am not sure what their purpose was, this is clearly a restaurant health code violation and at least a building code violation. I peaked into the kitchen, and it was disgusting. At this point, the only reason I stayed was because I had already paid. Shrimp with walnuts was perhaps one of the worst looking dishes I have ever encountered. It looked as though they took shrimp and added baby pineapple food over the top (which ended up being corn starch and some sugar substance). The texture was gooey the taste was the least bit appetizing. The crab rangoon was terrible, had no real taste or flavor. The oysters (which apparently was their specialty) had a very weird flavor, almost as if they were old and not refrigerated, or boiled or steamed in dirty water. BTW, I am a oyster lover, so I know a good one when I eat it. Lastly, the shrimp fried rice, which ironically was there best dish, had no flavor. Would not go back if the meal was free. Tasty! My egg roll was really tasty, and had visible shrimp in it. For my main course, I had the shrimp scallop nest, which had shrimp, scallops, celery, and carrots in a delicious sauce.
