This restaurant is in a dumpy shopping center. But the food was amazing. The broth in the dumpling soup was just so hearty and comforting. The hot and sour soup is what you would want in a hot and sour soup. It was thick (most I have had have been thin and watery) full of veggies, and a perfect balance of heat and sourness. My husband got the shrimp with egg sauce (usually called lobster sauce) and loved it. Its not really my cup of tea but I tried it and really liked it. I asked for another bite. I had the General Tso chicken it was also very delicious! The service was wonderful. They brought out a bowl of egg drop soup and rice mix for our baby and he loved it. The wonton soup was ok. I believe they use a beef broth with 1 won ton The egg roll was good nothing great or bad. I had moo goo Gia pan with bean sprouts. The had lots of sauce which I like. Husband had sweet n sour combo. Pork and chicken are just what you expect from any fast food restaurant. The sauce was ok. Forgot to take pics but we will not be back again. Yes it may look outdated inside and they are in a dire need of an upgrade, but it does not affect the quality of their food. I've ordered take out and have dined in many times, and each time I've dined in they are always packed with people. Silver star is not like the Americanized Chinese food places. They serve the authentic Chinese food how it is supposed to be and even have a dim sum menu. Most importantly, THEY. HAVE. SHRIMP. TOAST. OMG. SHRIMP TOAST!! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR THIS NEW ENGLAND TRANSPLANT TO FIND SHRIMP TOAST?!? LOL. Everything that I've had so far on the menu, I have enjoyed... except for the Mandarin pork. We were trying to find a Chinese restaurant in our area. We normally drive to Baymeadows to our favorite restaurant to pick up food. Ordered to go over the phone, the service was fine. Nothing spectacular. The restaurant is in a shopping center strip and is literally a hole in the wall. I definitely would not have eaten inside the restaurant. The vibe was very old house with the old house smell. Very dark and dated... late 70's?? The order was correct. However, the food wasn't really that good. We ordered about $75 worth of food ( Pork egg foo yung, beef and broccoli, pork ribs, crab rangoon, egg rolls, and a noodle dish). Jacksonville Chinese food is trash. Disappointed with this place. Went with my go to general tso chicken and fried dumplings. Chicken had no flavor even though it was coated in sauce. The fried rice had a burnt flavor. Dumpling meat had no flavor as well. The search continues for decent Chinese. read more

Zero stars. When we walked in, there was no one at the front desk to seat us or the other customer (who sat himself and his wife). It was about 20 minutes after opening so it was just our two parties at the restaurant. After standing around awkwardly for a few minutes, we too just sat ourselves. No one came out to main area of the restaurant. It seemed like no one was present at all. There was no service. After a few more minutes, a member of restaurant staff came to the table next to us and started folding cutlery. We were ignored. The fish in black bean - good flavor, large portion, peppers and fish well cooked - sauce could have had some spice. Fish not crispy bc of sauce in takeout. Good. Best Chinese food everrr! I love me some shrimp fried rice and I usually order it without egg, but this place doesn't drown your rice in eggs and the shrimp is plentiful. (Also deveined, that really made me happy). The crab crème puffs (crab Rangoon) is also delicious! For some reason this area of Jacksonville has curry wontons or whatever, but not Silver Star-- it's the authentic traditional wonton and mwah *chefs kiss* Pretty sure I've had 3 to go orders in the last two weeks. It's kind of an obsession. Don't go here if you're trying to diet, it's quite easy to get hooked on. My son and I ate dinner here with my parents. It's been a long time since we last ate here (15 years or so ago maybe). Nothing has changed. We started off with the chicken wings appetizers. I love me some chicken wings! For entrees, we shared the House Lo Mein, Szechuan chicken, and Fried rice. We also ordered my Mom's favorite, Chinese broccoli. I'm surprised how Chinese brocolli is leafy compared to the brocolli we're accustomed to. The food was excellent. Friendly staff too and the wait wasn't that bad. I have to try the Dim Sum. As an Orlando resident, being surrounded by so many delicious dim sum restaurants has turned me into a bit of a dim sum snob. So when my friend took me here for brunch, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It was great! Though the menu was lacking in variety, the quality of the food was comparable to Orlando in all aspects. They didn't have pork shu-mai and a couple of other staples, but the dishes they had were prepared perfectly and tasted super delicious. I didn't see any indication of the "greasy" qualities some Yelpers mentioned either since everything looked and tasted fresh! The staff was amazing as well. The host (and owner, I think) was super friendly and hands-on. He would be seating people, bringing food out, talking to customers -- he was everywhere! It's so nice to see such great customer service. I just have to deduct a star for lack of variety and the decor, which is fairly typical "Chinese restaurant" decor. read more

First of all, the inside Restaurant didn't seem clean, especially the bathroom and out table and my chair were sticky and had food bits on them. The server was nice and efficient but she had no personality or smiles. Apparently they have a Chinese menu that I was not aware of but if you know what you're looking for, I assume you can ask. My sister ordered Kanji(?) a rice porridge and it was ok. I ordered fish and shrimp hot pot and though we asked to make it spicy, it wasn't. My hubby got a house special and the brown sauce tasted the same as mine. My parents ordered pork in Chinese BBQ sauce and it was decent. Overall, the quality of food was nothing better than a hole in a place take-out Chinese restaurant. I did order sesame balls which was sticky rice ball with sweet filling covered in sesame seeds and it was interesting and tasted ok. Fortunately, I was with some people who knew what to order. See the accompanying menu photo for the dishes we got. You need to order the sesame balls (dessert) 20 minutes in advance, and they require a long cooldown even after being cut open. The bathroom was weak: a missing lock and almost out of toilet paper. Went here recently for dinner and had a great time. We ordered the pupu platter and it came with a little flame to sear the meat. The portion sizes are HUGE. We ordered the Kung pao chicken and orange chicken combos and enjoyed both. We had hoped to come for dim sum but there was none (it was Sunday dinner time) and we couldn't figure out when the right day and time is for dim sum. This place really is a hidden gem. My girlfriend and I were looking to try out some dim sum in the area. We were not disappointed. The interior isn't much to write home about, but the service and food were excellent. Our server was very helpful. Every recommendation she made was a joy to listen to. I have been on a dim sum kick lately. For three weeks in a roll, been going to the two dim sum places I know of in Jacksonville. Well, yesterday, we tried Silver Star. I believe the last time we were here was like... 5 years ago? I remember I did not have a good experience and therefore, never bothered to drive back to try again because it is far from where we live. Well, from reading reviews and a friend who told me that their dim sum was actually pretty good, we decided to give Silver Star another try. I am glad we did because we were pleasantly surprised. First of all, this is still Jacksonville, which still has a long way to go as far as authentic Chinese restaurants of various regions. There just aren't that many options. Silver Star to me, is "A-OK" for Jacksonville if not borderline "I'm a fan". There were four of us and we opted for all dim sum dishes. We tried their sui mai (ok), friend shrimp balls (tasty), bbq ribs (ok), bbq buns (ok), ginger and scallion beef tripe (tasty), bbq pork rice roll (ok), pan friend leek and pork dumplings (tasty), taro dumplings (ok), and the disappointing gold dumplings (too little filling) and turnip cake (just thin sad tasteless slices). So, yeah, a mixed bag on the food but again, for Jacksonville, where dim sums are extremely limited, it serve its purpose when you have dim sum cravings. The service was nice. Not just our main server, but the runners that bring us dishes and those that push the carts or walk around with tray full of dim sum plates, were all very friendly and attentive. I would visit Silver Star more often if I live closer. read more
