It is really bad that this little, hole in the wall Chinese restaurant is only a 5 minute drive from my house. Bad for the waistline. LOL Do not be fooled by the inside of Silver Star. Yes it may look outdated inside and they are in a dire need of an upgrade, but it does not affect the quality of their food. I've ordered take out and have dined in many times, and each time I've dined in they are always packed with people. Silver star is not like the Americanized Chinese food places. They serve the authentic Chinese food how it is supposed to be and even have a dim sum menu. Most importantly, THEY. HAVE. SHRIMP. TOAST. OMG. SHRIMP TOAST!! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR THIS NEW ENGLAND TRANSPLANT TO FIND SHRIMP TOAST?!? LOL. Everything that I've had so far on the menu, I have enjoyed... except for the Mandarin pork. It was advertised as spicy but it is more of a sour dish. I wasn't made aware of that when I ordered it, but after that they do let you know it is sour. Just an FYI. If you dine in, you get some complimentary crispy noodles, duck sauce and homemade chili oil with your meal. I liked the chili oil a lot and would use it as an accompaniment to some of the dishes I order. Service is always excellent every time I go. The owner of the place is really nice and she will check up on everyone. I wish I got her name! If you are looking for authentic Chinese and dim sum west of the St. John's river, you won't be disappointed with Silver Star.

Its difficult to rate a restaurant based only on a pickup order that I ate at my desk at work while talking on the phone or radio. I ordered a lot, I wanted to try many of the different things. My most favorite was the leek dumplings and the house lo mein, but i think every thing that I tried could have had a bit more seasoning.

Jacksonville Chinese food is trash. Disappointed with this place. Went with my go to general tso chicken and fried dumplings. Chicken had no flavor even though it was coated in sauce. The fried rice had a burnt flavor. Dumpling meat had no flavor as well. The search continues for decent Chinese.

First time trying this restaurant and it was great! Everything our waitress suggested was delicious and we'll definitely be back to try more food! If you like calamari, I highly suggest to try theirs!

My son and I ate dinner here with my parents. It's been a long time since we last ate here (15 years or so ago maybe). Nothing has changed. We started off with the chicken wings appetizers. I love me some chicken wings! For entrees, we shared the House Lo Mein, Szechuan chicken, and Fried rice. We also ordered my Mom's favorite, Chinese broccoli. I'm surprised how Chinese brocolli is leafy compared to the brocolli we're accustomed to. The food was excellent. Friendly staff too and the wait wasn't that bad. I have to try the Dim Sum. Many of my fellow yelpers were talking about it. Definitely next time!

Tucked away off Old St. Augustine Road in Mandarin, Lucky Cat Dim Sum serves some of the freshest dim sum in Jacksonville. Everything arrived steaming hot, a small detail that makes a big difference. Dim sum is meant to be eaten fresh from the basket, not after a leisurely stroll around the dining room. The classics were all excellent. The chicken shu mai were substantial, flavorful, and held together beautifully. The black pepper beef short ribs were fall-apart tender. The fried shrimp balls delivered the kind of crunch that announces itself before the flavor arrives. The barbecue pork bun was pillowy soft and packed with a sweet-savory filling that lingered long after the last bite. Dessert was equally successful. The mango mochi had the ideal chew and was loaded with chunks of ripe mango. The taro Lucky Cat bun, shaped like the restaurant's mascot, could have coasted on appearance alone. Instead, the filling was smooth, lightly sweet, and thoughtfully restrained. What separates Lucky Cat from every other dim sum restaurant in Jacksonville is its willingness to have fun. The menu is filled with East-meets-West creations that could easily become gimmicks in less capable hands. Everything Bagel Buns, Buffalo Chicken Buns, and other familiar flavors offer diners an approachable gateway into the world of dim sum. The standout was the Cheeseburger Shu Mai. It sounds like the sort of thing that should fail spectacularly. Instead, it works. Seasoned ground beef wrapped in a delicate shu mai wrapper and topped with melted cheese. The beef carried a bold Cajun kick, the cheese added richness, and somehow the whole thing remained balanced. It tasted far bigger than a single bite had any right to. I've eaten at every dim sum restaurant Jacksonville has to offer, and Lucky Cat stands at the top of the list. It delivers the classics with confidence while bringing enough creativity to keep even seasoned dim sum fans interested. The beef rice noodle rolls had no flavor at all and it was ground beef for the filling instead of a compacted beef roll like a mini meatloaf that most dim sum places have. I love visiting Saint Augustine so I was so excited when I found this dim sum restaurant!…read more Unfortunately I was very disappointed. I was dining by myself. I always order a lot of dishes because I like what I like and I also know I'll have leftovers. I sent back the pan fried taro pudding because it was so bland and it didn't have many of the main ingredients in it. If it were there, it was so skimpy I didn't find any. (The Chinese sausage and dried shrimp) The pain fries soy sauce noodles were overcooked. It's suppose to be pan fried and it was not. Also very skimpy on the black mushrooms. Not very flavorful. The Steamed shrimp dumplings were mediocre. The skin was gummy and fell apart. The shrimp filling wasn't too bad. The shrimp with rice pasta was probably the best dish there. But it was still lacking in flavor. The steamed ribs with black bean sauce was very bland. The ribs were tough and tasteless. The braised chicken feet were over cooked. The texture was horrible like eating mush. The flavors were also off. The egg tarts looked good but the flavors again were off. Borderline going bad. It had that slight aftertaste of sourness. The shell was also flavorless. The BBQ pork buns were also disappointing. The ratio of bread to filling was off. Very small amount. But I was a little happy this happened because the filling didn't taste good at all. The hot tea was also disappointing. I always order jasmine tea when having dim sum. They used a low quality tea bag instead of real loose jasmine tea leaves which also includes the flowers. No fragrance at all of Jasmine tea. Needless to say, I will not be going back on my next visit. It was very expensive for what they give you. Especially since the food was so bad. I gave it two stars because the service was very good and the view was decent. I am Chinese... born in Hong Kong. So I know what dim sum should taste like. I wish I had seen the review that had a photo of the salt and pepper shrimp before I went because I would not have gone. Their salt and pepper shrimp is not authentic and I would have not gone and saved myself $80 for my lunch.

They didn't say that but I included a photo of both because I feel like they're close enough As far as food goes, we split the Peony Sampler for an appetizer and loved it. It definitely did it's job as a sampler because now we know we like all of their appetizers and would order any of them on their own in the future. I ordered Egg Drop Soup after that because it's a favorite of mine. I always add a little salt to their version of it but I add salt to a lot of soups so that may just be a "me" thing. I had the Sweet & Sour Pork with Fried Rice for my entree, which is the same things had last time and it's still great. Between the appetizer and the soup and the entree, I was hoping to have enough to take home for lunch tomorrow and I definitely did. My wife had the General Chicken. She really liked the sauce because it was sweet but has a little bit of spicy kick to it. She said the same thing I said about the chicken itself; she loved that it was big pieces of juicy white meat. She was also surprised by how much she liked the broccoli which made for one of those things where you could get a bite of everything at once. She also had a lot to take home, so she's happy with that too. Thank you again to the person who posted about Peony in the group recently. We had a great lunch thanks to your reminder.

We started with the edamame, with the sea salt and truffle oil, which is always delicious. The service over the evening was very slow, and we spent a lot of time waiting on food. We sat in our favorite spot at the bar window so our server also appeared the be working behind the bar and was busy making drinks. We love sake and usually get a bottle of the Noble Arrow. We asked for a recommendation and the server recommended the Soul of the Sensei, which is $107 for the bottle. We were celebrating our 24th anniversary so we went for it. He said it was on the dry side, but we found it very unexpectedly sweet, almost like a moskato wine. It wasn't surprising when we read the back of the label and saw the flavor profile was all the way on the fruity side, with notes of Muscat grape. We definitely made a mistake by not tasting it first, so we ended up asking for a bag to take it home and ordered 2 glasses of the Noble Arrow. It was a disappointing start. Next we ordered the yellowtail carpaccio, which was very good, although the size of the fish pieces overall seemed smaller than usual. Everything we ordered over the evening was undeniably tasty, but small. We got the Usuzukuri salmon and when they brought it, they had the tuna carpaccio as well. The person who brought it said it was a gift. Later, we were charged $2 on the bill for the "gift." It's not much, but it's just that giving us a gift and then putting a charge on the bill for it was very strange. Overall, I still love the food at O-Ku, but this was not the best experience. We had gone there previously for our anniversary and they made it feel special. This time there wasn't any kind of recognition besides possibly the "gift" we had to pay extra for. And the service was so slow that we ended up drinking the bottle of sake we didn't like rather than waiting for another drink order. Every place will have its off nights, and this unfortunately seemed to be one of them. I would still recommend going there, because even though the portions are tiny and expensive, the taste is delicious.
