The turnip cake was mushy in the middle and hard/chewy on the edges; wouldn't recommend it. It's been a little over a year since we ate here but we recently went back. The scallop fried rice aka crystal fried rice is a must try and is something used to I crave. Finally tried dimsum at Hong Kong Bistro. The place was pretty empty but it was a rainy Wednesday. Straight to the point service, which I am ok with. We always had water in our cups and the food came out quickly and very hot. Tried the short ribs, eggplant with shrimp, sesame balls, steamed pork buns, beef rice roll and pork rice roll. Sesame balls and eggplant were perfect! Short ribs were a bit chewy but with very good flavor. I was scrolling through my delivery app to look for something different to eat. I don't know what made me stop on this restaurant, maybe it was for some of dim sum options. But looking through the appetizers my eyes were set on one option. I had to get the Jellyfish. I mean come on, it's jelly-freaking-fish! Unfortunately, My search continues for the Holy Grail of Chinese food in Jax. If you've never had Chinese food in NYC then you might enjoy this more than I did. I had high hopes for Hong Kong Bistro as I entered this rather large undescript Chinese restaurant. We were seated promptly by a friendly hostess who was also our server. The menu has some traditional Chinese dishes including beef & broccoli, lo Mein, and some special items like crispy duck and even a few things I've never heard of like a jelly fish dish. My husband judges all Chinese restaurants by their won ton soup. He said when asked" Well it doesn't taste like dishwater." Which is a good compliment. He enjoyed it very much but said it only had 1 tiny piece of pork floating around his cup. I had the hot & sour soup which was very spicy just the way I like it. At this point we had high hopes. We then ordered the shrimp & garlic rolls. Although they looked like egg rolls & were crispy on the outside they were filled with something soft that had little to no flavor. Next we had crispy noodles with pork. This dish is a hard crispy noodle with a soft noodle in sauce with pork on top. This dish was neutral. It had no flavor but we added soy sauce & hot mustard which much improved it. Next we had curry chicken. On the menu this dish was noted to be spicy. It was hacked chicken, onions, snow peas in a curry gravy. The dish was more gravy than ingredients & It had a mild curry flavor but absolutely no spice. It was good but I was disappointed in the lack of spice. I had ordered hot tea and when I poured it tons of tea leaves poured into my cup. I sure wish I knew how to read the tea leaves. I felt I was not able to drink the tea with all those leaves in it and our server promptly apologized & said this is the way they serve it. I'm sure that's more authentic but not for me. I should have went to S&R Dim Sum. I was craving some Dim Sum and saw this place on Yelp and so I figured I'd take the long trip from the Northside to Hodges Blvd and see what's up. It was dissappointing. The dumpling wrappers on the Xiao Long Bao were too thick and the same goes for the Har Gow, which were not only way too thick, all of them stuck to the parchment paper and tore open. The Pan Fried Shrimp and Chive Dumplings were ok, but those all would fall apart when taking a bite. For some reason, the hot oil that was on the table seemed off to me, like maybe the oil was rancid or old, but there was a type of aftertaste I was picking up each time I used it. I've had better Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf elsewhere. The pineapple buns while having a filling (which I prefer over the non-filled ones), while warm, the filling was not creamy like I usually get. I thought at first it was maybe salted egg filling, but I don't think so. The biggest dissappointment was the Beef Chow Fun with Gravy. My wife took one bite and said it was underwhelming and after a little while, probably the blandest Chinese dish she's ever had. I tend to agree. The gravy seemed thickened to the point of almost being goopy, but there was absolutely no depth of flavor. I tasted a bit of smokiness (Wok Hei) but that was about all I tasted and the rice noodles felt mushy. We took that dish home and hope we can doctor it up to give it some flavor. The service was fine, and the place is spacious. It's a shame the Dim Sum was below what I've had elsewhere like S&R Dim Sum or YH Dimsum. I don't like to see businesses fail, but it was pretty empty in there on a Saturday evening. I probably won't return. read more

They had run out of the steamed pork buns by the time we got there unfortunately! The only thing we ordered off the regular menu was the house special Peking duck. It was crispy and tender.
