We've been here before and even ordered takeout on occasion. Normally would be a 3 or 4 star review. Not today! My wife and son's orders were just fine. MY corned beef sandwich? Not so much. Small portion, $13 price. Meager amount of fries. The soup was good though. I might have been able to say something but the waiter didn't come back until we were practically finished, not even for refills. When checking out I was asked if everything was good. Nope. I told him it was the weakest sandwich ever. Without asking me specifics he launched into "I know for a fact that we put 6oz on every sandwich". We'll that only accounts for the size. Not the dryness, lack of flavor, or the fact that it looked like the threw on the meat from across the room. All small bits of corned beef, not a nicely sliced, well presented meal. Sure, he said "sorry" but didn't seem to care one iota. Why would he? They weren't hurting for business on this Mother's Day. Sad. First and last time visiting this establishment. I figured I would try their cream of rice soup and in the immortal words of Clara Pellar Wheres the $#!+. Couldn't find the chicken or rice without using a magnifying glass and the so called cream was as watery as tap water. On top of it they were also not wearing masks as required by the state mandate so you can see they care more about the dollars in their register other than customers safety. I come here every other month or so and honestly, this place is always on point. They have a good size parking lot, so no worries there. Food arrived quickly - AGAIN. It was delicious - AGAIN! AGAIN - WHY DOES THIS PLACE ONLY HAVE 3 STARS???? It was busy for breakfast, and too chilly for outdoor seating. I was pleased to sit in the main dining room. Mary was exceptionally friendly and a pleasure to be served by. I had the Incredible Gypsy skillet with banana pancakes. The skillet itself looked a hot mess, smelled amazing, and I fully expected it to be delicious. I was not disappointed. The pancakes were served with a full banana's worth of slices and fresh whipped cream. The cream was subtle and enhanced the banana's flavor. And frankly - any skillet breakfast that looks as much a hot mess as the Incredible Gypsy is bound to be delicious. Trust me when I say you won't be disappointed with it. The issue was the waitress she was having a bad day and everything was someone else's problem. When the order arrived I was confused and asked the waitress why I received sliced Roast Beef when I ordered the Pot Roast? The reply was that was the way the chef sliced his pot roast! We have been going to this place for so long and never had an issue with service . But This just happened now , There were 4 of us sitting out side service was a little slow and off at first but we didn't mind much . My order was the one to cause the problem , I ordered a BLT well done bacon . So it came out close to raw so I asked for them to make some more bacon well done and to not take my whole plate back . The waitress said she would get 3 pieces made well done and I said there are more than 3 pieces on that BLT and she said Ok . Meanwhile everyone else had their food and so they were going to wait for mine to come back , thats when the owner then came out and decided to take my whole plate and tell me they were going to make a whole new BLT, I didn't want that by the way . So the owner brings the BLT out and says very loudly and somewhat sarcastic that here's your well done bacon we will have to charge more for extra bacon ! I never wanted extra bacon I wanted bacon well done and I told him that and he said the waitress didn't put the order in like that . We didn't even care what he was going to charge it was the point he was so rude about it , then he walked away . When the waitress came back we were trying explain what went wrong and he came back telling us it's done let it go and if we don't like it we can leave . He then started yelling as we were asking why he was being so rude we have no problem paying for our food but don't try to charge for some thing we didn't even ask for . It got so loud we had to stand up and walk out , he got very aggressive and mentioning my girlfriends mother , where did that come from So unprofessional with us which is awful for an owner of a restaurant . Have you ever been called by a pet name at an employee at a business and been a little weirded out? Well if that bothers you then keep your distance from Simon's Restaurant. Before I go over the food, the decor, the service or anything else I have to address this first. It seems that all of the waitresses at Simon's adopt the policy that everyone's name is "honey". It's just a little off putting to say the least. My initial reaction to this was similar to the first time I visited Chick-Fil-A and heard "my pleasure" repeated over and over. I wanted to ask "Really, you get off on putting extra sauce packets in my bag? Well if that's your kink". It just creates a level of awkwardness that could otherwise be avoided. Simon's is a diner/pancake place located off of Roosevelt Road in Villa Park. They're almost directly across the street from Kappy's. While the decor on the inside is certainly nicer than their competitor across the street, and the seats are more comfortable they're definitely not as busy. When I came into Simon's there was only one other customer and two waitresses walking around, I stood for about two minutes before being recognized and got my table. Fortunately, from there on out they were very responsive providing refills, asking how everything was and calling me and everyone within a several mile radius "honey". I ordered the Incredible Gypsy Skillet which is a variation of their regular gypsy skillet. The good news is the food was solid, there was a good variety of different ingredients, the eggs were well prepared, the potatoes were still soft and not too crispy, there was a nice combination of peppers. It was a well seasoned good tasting skillet that left me feeling very full at the end of my meal. Was it the best skillet I've ever had? Certainly not, but it was above average for sure. My family and I have been coming here for years! Even came here on a first date and he really liked it! The staff is AMAZING! The place is always super clean and bright! One thing I've noticed, LOVE and speaks highly of the owner and his family- is how they see dirty dishes on the table and will take them. They are not handling the new COVID19 procedures at all. Its a complete mess. They have lots of outdoor dining, pretty cramped, but fine. But in order to check in for the waitlist you have to crowd into the tiny indoor vestibule with everyone else waiting in line to pay or to pick up orders or sign in as well. When I mentioned they should have a hostess waiting outside they said they are understaffed. You need a mask to enter the building, but all the employees inside are wearing them hanging around their necks, or they remove their masks to talk to you. So we get checked in and go wait outside to be called, at which point the hostess wants us to walk back through the inside of the building to get to the outdoor seating area. I didn't have masks for my whole family, so I asked why we had to go back inside and got a pretty bad attitude along with a "fine, I'll meet you at the tent". So we easily walked over to the outdoor patio and waited for her instead of having to walk past all the other diners on the enclosed porch. We get seated and the table is dirty. So when the waitress comes I ask if we can get something to wipe the table off. She looks at me and says "I can't, I just can't. I'll have to find someone. What do you want to drink". Not user what happened But now the quality control needs to be corrected or they need to update their menu and see what is served and what doesn't. For example The Turkey bacon club is served with fries and soup. Got the soup got the club but missing the fries. I have been getting Togo from Simon's restaurant for quite sometime now and as I love the food I am very disappointed by the news I've heard about this family owned restaurant. I was getting my regular weekend togo of cream of chicken rice and I normally leave a nice tip on the charge because as a service worker myself I know how it is to be tipped for their hard work. When I came to pick up my order I was rang up by who I was certain took my order over the phone as they had the same voice. I told her to make sure she got the tip I was leaving on charge. Unfortunately, she let me know that servers do not receive the tips left on credit cards and only the ones left in cash. As many would not think this is a big deal, as a server myself I know how hard these servers work to make a living & to not be given a tip that is rightfully theirs is not right to me. I just felt like this was important to point out because as a family owned restaurant they shouldn't be pocketing money as their workers have families to feed as well. When I asked for a vanilla cappuccino, the server said "oh no, we don't have that. We only have regular coffee". So, why is it on the menu? I then ordered corn beef hash skillet with pancakes. The pancakes were hard and clearly had not been made recently. The corn beef hash was very under cooked and looked raw. When I told the server, he said "well, it comes out of a can already cooked". I really like this place as far as diners go. I've driven past for many years.... decided to stop based on the Yelp pictures. I ordered the chicken kabob dinner and it was great!! Chicken was flavored well and cooked to perfection. Took half home because it was a big portion. Apple pancake to go was good. I like that they do it all hours as most places only make them for breakfast. Bathroom was clean, server was good and friendly as well. Only drawback was the dyson hand dryers.... it's connected to the faucet so it blows soap suds and water all over. It was actually quite humorous.... Besides the pastry case, you'll find a case filled with bone-in hams. My review today is based on breakfast. My breakfast club gals and I met this morning at Simon's. Breakfast is available all day and I often will order breakfast when dining there later in the day. Today the orders included a bacon omelet, scrambled eggs with sausage, sunny-side up eggs with bacon, and a single scrambled egg; all came with hash-browns and toast. My breakfast was a slice of ham off the bone sandwiched between two pancakes, topped with two eggs, over medium. We all accepted the offer of a complimentary small orange juice. Three of us had coffee and one had hot tea. The total, including tax for the five of us was $40.55. Pretty darn good price for all that food. The eggs were all cooked as ordered, the hash browns weren't undercooked and everyone was happy. I would definitely order the ham encased in pancakes again. read more

Me and my family ate here for the first time. We are from Chicago. the menu was extensive and very reasonably priced. Usually I only find 1-2 gems in the menu but I found gems in every section of the menu. For example, I saw regular pancakes for like $7-8 dollars when I know that would be like $10 at Golden Nugget in Chicago. The 20 minute wait wasn't long at all. the plates were really big which I was surprised by as most restaurants serve you normal-size plates to make you feel like you got a lot of food.
