This place is the perfect Baton Rouge breakfast and lunch spot. The atmosphere is homey, the tables are decorated with a theme (LSU, Saints, Star Wars, Marvel, etc) and there is local artwork along the walls. The menu is on a dry-erase board above the coffee and everything is good. Seriously. All of it.They carry River Road coffee and there is a Sumatra blend that's brewed just for Simple Joe, which is awesome. I recently had the chicken tacos and let me break this down for you: roasted veggies 6 oz of juicy chicken some sort of delicious aioli It was the perfect hearty portion, and I was so excited to see so much chicken as some places load you up on toppings and short the chicken. We love Simple Joe! We have lived in Mid-City for over 6 years and are so excited to see new, locally-owned businesses popping up in the area. The food is delicious without being overdone. The pancakes are always fluffy and you can add blueberries, strawberries, or chocolate chips to them! They also have the BEST grits! I have never been a fan of grits, but Joe's grits are so creamy that even I crave them! The only critique I have is that it usually seems that one side of pancake is burnt, but other than that... This is our go-to breakfast spot when visiting our son at LSU. It is hands-down the best breakfast in Baton Rouge. And like the name says, it's simple, a no-frills, order-at-the-counter breakfast cafe, but oh so good. The shrimp and grits are excellent, as are the biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and breakfast combos. The owner and staff are super friendly and have created a relaxing atmosphere where many locals go for not only the great food but to relax and hang out. The owner told me they are introducing a new french toast menu item (sounds like something Banana's Foster style) which I will definitely try when I'm back in town. Let me just say, I was not disappointed! The mojo coffee is so good and they use coffee ice cubes so it doesn't get watered down. The grits were super creamy, it had a bit of a kick and the shrimp were nice sized and plentiful. The BBQ butter (not smoked BBQ sauce but that unique Louisiana savory taste) was delicious. My husband had scrambled eggs and pancakes and both were light, fluffy and fresh. The coffee was fresh and delicious as well. This place may not look like a 5 star restaurant, but the food could be served in one. On top of all this, the staff were very friendly and quick to accommodate. Made you feel like family. A nice place for a quiet brunch. We were a bit confused about how to order upon walking in, but a very cheerful and friendly host explained everything to us. You order at the register and sit down where you like. They bring the food out to you. Silverware, syrup, sugar, etc. are on a table across from the register. While deciding what to order, one of the customers dining in suggested shrimp and grits because they were divine. So, my boyfriend tried out the shrimp and grits and a plain pancake, and I had chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, bacon and grits. He's not much of a fan salty grits, but he liked the dish, so hats off to them for that. The shrimp was cooked to perfection. ^^ The pancakes are DENSE and sweet on their own. But delicious. The only drawback there is that the chocolate chips were burnt on the underside of the pancake. The bacon was crispy, the eggs were nice and fluffy, and the grits were creamy though a little sweet. First time trying out this restaurant. Husband and I went after church on a Sunday around 11:45am. We walked in to what seemed like controlled chaos. We waited in line for 30 minutes to order our food. The small dining area was just that, small. Workers were weaving in and out of the order line to deliver food to the customers at the tables. They were courteous about it at least. I order the full French toast and sausage patty and husband ordered egg, bacon, pancake. I enjoyed mine, but he stated the pancake was undercooked. I think they need servers instead of wait in line to order, but it is a different experience unlike other places in Baton Rouge.
