What an amazing place to eat in a small quaint town. For appetizers, we had fried oysters, fried green tomatoes and fried pickles. All were amazing. For a main course I chose the half order of shrimp and grits which may I say was plenty and I'm not sure what the full order looks like, but I was a little scared. My girlfriend had one of the specials which was a country fried ham, and that was also cooked to perfection moist not dry like most places. We strongly recommend this place. My wife and I were driving around Sumter when we decided to check out a new place for dinner. I found Simply Southern Bistro on Yelp and we headed over to the restaurant. From the outside, it looks nondescript. We weren't sure what to think but headed in anyway. As I read over the menu, I was tempted by every item I looked at. It was truly a case of everything sounding delicious and intriguing. We started with an order of the smoked duck and sausage wontons. WOW! What a fabulous start to our meal!!! We were served a total of four wontons and each of us would consider ordering multiples of this appetizer to make a meal out of them. My wife ordered the Pimento Cheese Burger with a side of fries for her entree. I went with the Pork Belly Burger and a side of fried okra. The portion sizes were nothing short of huge. I struggled to finish my meal and my wife had plenty of leftovers for her lunch the next day. Our server, Anna, was a true professional and on the top of her game. We were both interested in the special for the evening: Bacon Jam Filet Mignon Sandwich and decided to order them medium rare. It was cooked perfectly to our expectations and so delicious. My colleagues and I were looking for a place to have a decent sit down lunch. We came across this restaurant on google and decided to give it a try. I ordered the duck sandwich with fried mac and cheese. The mango chutney in the sandwich gave the duck a sweet taste. The duck had a very desirable texture that was pleasing to the tongue. The pimento cheese balanced out the sweetness. The fried mac and cheese was fried to perfection. The size of the mac and cheese balls were quite large. We're new in town and have passed this place a few times and decided today to stop in. The hostess was very pleasant and seated us pretty quickly. Our waitress was super nice and explain the items on the menu I had questions about. We ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer, it comes with 2 crab cakes and although good, it's mixed with some other seafood meat/fish that I couldn't place... possibly salmon. My husband ordered the Buffalo Chicken sandwich with fried Mac & cheese balls, he said both were good but the buffalo sandwich wasn't hot at all which is surprising because everything is spicy to him. I ordered the fried pork chops, fries and fried Mac balls. Pork chops were hot but lacked any flavor, I did have gravy on the side and used it on my chops but it still didn't give it that ump I was hoping. The macaroni balls were seasoned well and I was impressed with them, you get 2 and they aren't too big so be prepared. The fries, the fries surprisingly were the star of the show to me. Hot, seasoned and my husband loved them so he got an order of his own. Overall our check was rough $60 and I do find it a bit much but it's ok. I will say everything came out hot and rather quickly. The only off putting thing I didn't like was an older gentleman whom I believe is the owner walked around greater every single table except ours. Whenever I see a restaurant that claims to serve down south dishes I admit I go in with a pre conceived notion of what the food should taste like. This establishment is located in a small strip of shops and the front parking can be a tad bit full when crowded during the lunch hours. No need to worry as there are spaces on the side of the building and in the lot next to the building. Before I go any further in this review I will say the hospitality and the service is great in this place and truly stood out. Kasey was helping me out on this day and since this was my first time here she was making a few suggestions of her favorites. She continually checked on me to see how I was doing and if I had any additional questions. It was the right amount of attention as to be helpful but not too intrusive. I am sure we are all aware of places that seem to only come and ask you how you are doing as soon as you put some food in your mouth. No worries of that here. Before you order anything you are presented with a complimentary buttery biscuit. I made up mind and went with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes (FGT). They were huge and to let you know you definitely get your money's worth as far as portion sizes here. Portion size does not matter if it is no good of course. The FGTs were breaded nicely and crispy. At time I have this at other places and the breading is falling off and it is just soaking in oil. I was able to cut portions of the FGTs with my fork without the breading crumbling all over leaving me with nothing but a tomato. This appetizer also comes with a dipping sauce but I never had a need for it and ate my appetizer as is. For the main course I chose smothered pork chops with collard greens and fried okra. Yes, the pork chops are fried then smothered in gravy. You do have the option of having your pork chops grilled. The collard greens were good and you know the type of place you in when they ask you if you would like some vinegar with your greens? Some of you know what I am talking about. I gladly accepted the offer and as I took a bite of the greens there was a piece of ham, who I am kidding it was a piece of fatback that was cooked with it. Another score for Simply Southern Bistro. The okras were very good and I enjoyed how each side dish was placed in its own individual bowl instead of just coming out all together on the same plate. It gives you a chance to taste each dish as it is. The pork chops were huge as I told you early you will get your money's worth. It was brown gravy and it added a nice flavor to the breaded pork chops. Here is a hint. Your food will come out piping hot so if you ordered what I ordered just let it sit and let the breading of the pork chop sop up some of that gravy. I am sure you saw this coming but I would recommend Simply Southern Bistro as a stop for your lunch or dinner. A solid four stars and a place that does down south food justice. read more

I wanted to try something different today and my BF that has lived here all his life had never tried this place either so we decided to check it out. Doesn't scream to you from the outside that it would be anything but decent. The inside decor says the same but that's what I liked about it. I was sad to see no baked potato as a side as that's what I'm used to being from the Midwest but the mashed potatoes were a good substitute. But let's stop right now and talk about their fried Mac n cheese!! They have light breading fried to perfection and the Mac and cheese inside is cooked well and the flavors combined is an explosion of gooey deliciousness! The shrimp po boy was nothing to elaborate on. The shrimp lacked seasoning and it was just ok. Last stop was dessert. I had my eye on the lemon velvet cake the moment I saw it on the chalkboard when we entered. I asked our waiter Max if I should get that or the coconut and he said the lemon velvet is the best. He was not wrong! I had it put in a to go container planning to only have a bite to try there. Well thankfully my willpower finally took over after I had devoured half of it and finally closed the lid. Max has only been working there for 3 months, he was truly a delight.
