This place has amazing food! My friend and I had the ahí tuna flatbread and the rice bowl. Both were so good with really fresh avocado. Unfortunately our waitress Kelly W was honestly so rude. She rarely came over to our table and gave us so much attitude when we asked for the check. I would have understood if the place was busy but it was 830 at night and many of the tables were open. Okay, the rice bowl with ahi tuna was out of this world. It was so filling and had so many interesting components that really excited me. The minute I tasted the food, I got extremely happy. I'm all about upper scale Japanese food. I also ordered the burrata cheese with beets that was great, but the bowl was so filling I sadly couldn't eat it all. I also had the grapefruit basil martini which was really refreshing. It could've had a bit more flavor, but I did like it. The atmosphere is also really modern and hip. Very disappointed. I was excited about the wine tasting options and expected the menu to reflect lots of wine friendly foods. We were sorely disappointed in both the wines we were served and in the food menu; So much so that we didn't bother ordering food. This restaurant suffers from a major kitchen identity crisis on the border of Chinatown. The menu includes "charcuterie," flat bread and LOTS of sushi/Asian foods all on the same page. The expression "Jack of all trades...master of none" comes to mind. Hence, this review is of the wine service, a menu review and our experience in the retaurant. They market themselves as a wine bar yet the menu does not list the vintages and they failed to properly "keep" the open botles of wine. Both of the wines I ordered and one of the wines my husband ordered had been opened previously and left on a room temperature shelf with replacement rubber corks. My red wines were the bottom of the bottles. Okay...surely...given that this is "wine bar," any previously opened bottles (likely from the day or so before given that we were there at 4 pm) had been treated with a spray of argon/nitrogen gas to preserve the wine. WRONG! These 3 wines were on their way to becoming fruit-free vinegar...you know what I mean...exactly the way a low to moderate quality wine tastes 24 - 48 hours after the bottle is opened - - similarly - - the same way an everyday wine tastes when its left in a glass overnight and you make the mistake of tasting it the next day. Managing expectations is everything - I expected a wine bar with respect for the wines they served and their wine tasting customers. Instead we experienced a sophisticated decor trying to attract the college kid/20 something unsophisticated palate. Don't stop here if you're looking for a good wine and food pairing experience. Hate to be harsh but it is what it is. DO stop here if you are looking for a more social experience in a pretty setting with lots of asian food choices. read more

I had a very mediocre experience here. Although the burger I had was quite delicious the service was sub par. When one walks in to Sip, embraces the atmosphere, and sees the prices on the menu one would have immediate and high expectations for the establishment. My server by the name of Michael however did not quite fulfill the level of professionalism Sip's atmosphere portrays. He was extremely rude when we asked for another glass of wine and when we asked to see a dessert menu as if we were imposition to him. I find it very displeasing to read good reviews about this server when he was so unpleasant to me. I understand that I may not have been dressed to see the ballet or a fancy show the evening I dinned there, but that does not mean I should be treated less than a patron that is. I was before this an avid consumer at Sip's affiliated businesses in the Boston area and it's a shame that I no longer desire to return to Sip or one of it's affiliates due to that one bitter experience. read more

Came by to grab drink on Labor Day at 4pm and was served by a blonde pixie cut bartender named Brenda. The place was empty with only 2 other people sitting at the bar. I asked if they had mojitos here and she unpleasantly replied "yes, every bar has mojitos" and chuckled sarcastically. I brushed it off and asked for a grapefruit mojito with soda. Again, rudely, she said "EVERY mojito has soda". My friend then asked what was a popular or which cocktail she would recommend and she said "I don't know what you like, I would need a JUMPOFF, so why don't you read the menu and have your friend pick one" this was after we had already read the menu for 10 minutes!! She was ridiculously condescending and didn't even acknowledge us leaving. Three mediocre drinks for $36 wasn't what bothered us, it was the lack of professionalism and the disgusting behavior from this bartender that will make us NEVER return to this bar. We would never recommend our friends/family or business partners here because you can't "SIP" your drinks here, you have to down your drink to avoid such an uncomfortable situation. read more

Sip is so much more than a wine bar. The food is fantastic and reasonably priced for such a gorgeous venue in a touristy location. Two of my friends and I had dinner here on New Years Eve and we were blown away with the flavorful small plated menu including: pear salad, spicy tuna roll, buffalo rock shrimp and our favorite, Kobe Meatballs. In terms of cuisine, it's completely eclectic from American staples to oyster bar fare, to inventive spins on rolls that you would expect from a real sushi restaurant like Douzo. The best part of our entire meal though was our amazing flamboyant waiter who treated us like princesses on this special evening. He provided great stories and fun entertainment to accompany our feast. Really missing Bina (which occupied the location before) so wanted to see what Sip had to offer. Not a lot. Very generic place that has more TVs than a sports bar. Wholly unpleasant, though the company of my friend was worth every moment. Bar staff seemed annoyed. Crowd looked like they were shipped in from the cast of Jersey Shore. Drink menu came from mid-July, full of sweet concoctions made from run of the mill ingredients. I could have been at an airport bar. Would not go here again. Ok, so 2 stars might be a little unfair but here's the sitch... you can't give half a star. I've noticed Sip for a while, as I do work downtown. Never went in, but yesterday, I decided to try it as a post work, pre movie spot to hang out with my coworkers. For some odd reason I really wanted to go to a place that had couches. They do have "couches". More like lounge couches, but that's besides the point. So they get a star for satisfying my urge. I wasn't too hungry but my friends were. They ordered the calamari and the mini arancini ( warm mozzarella centers, oven roasted tomato sauce, truffle essence). I ordered the mangria (our version for men of the traditional sangria but served with vodka) - because I like to challenge "social expectations" haha. While the pricing of this wine bar and kitchen is pretty reasonable considering that it is located right near the opera house the food was ehh. The calamari was lightly battered but not well seasoned for my taste. The aranici wasn't what we expected because it included rice and made the centers more mushy than crispy like traditional mozzarella fried concoctions. However, the mangria was quite satisfying if I must say so myself. After two glasses I was feeling giggly. I should probably visit once more before settling on my 2 stars but I doubt I'll be returning for the food at this point. In my opinion, if you go to Sip, have a drink, skip the food. read more

Sat there for 20 minutes before I had to get up and ask the hostess if someone could bring a glass of water which still took time. I came here mainly because of the "out of control roll" as it looks cool. It pretty much has a lot of things I like: salmon, tuna, crab meat, and avocado. The sauces they put I guess are thousand Island dressing, mayonnaise, and okonomiyaki sauce. I have to say $18 for 6 rolls are kind of expensive. It looks good definitely. Not only was our server NEVER around, the drinks took forever & the Mediterranean platter we ordered took over 30 minutes to get to us (at 3:30pm on a very slow day) which the server then took off the check because we have a feeling she never put it in. The hostess was very nice. Kerrie my waitress was incredibly attentive and my drinks & food came just in the correct time. You know that time when you want to kill a human because you are THAT hungry but still want to keep it together because you don't want to go to jail? Yep! Seeing that mimosa coming was the highlight of my year and the sushi was very good. By the reviews they have the "out of control" sushi roll is a very popular one and it did not disappoint. Their menu is all over the place. They have seafood, they have sushi, they have burgers and salads, they have steak... They are trying to please every costumer so with that you know that the food isn't 100% authentic & there isn't anything too special about it but they are open until 1am and you can't beat that when you are trying to go have a drink after 11:30pm. A sip is a 2 ounce tasting of a wine that they are offering on their menu. You can have one sip at a time or you can have multiple ones and compare them to each other. I came here just for drinks so I'm not sure how their food is but I approve! This place is a classy establishment that allows co-workers, family, and/or friends to relax and have a bite to eat. There is no snootiness and it's not some dive bar that's full of 18 year olds and an embarrassment to bring your Mom and Pop to when they're in town. The bartenders were really nice and since this is their third week in business, they ask you where you're from and for your opinion about the place. I had their sip tease ( a cocktail with lunetta, lemoncello, ginger, and blueberry) and their grapefruit basil martini (hendricks gin, fresh basil, grapefruit, soda). Perhaps I'm not sophisticated enough to understand this concept, but to charge $4 for a "sip" of wine that would cost you about $11 for a 6 oz glass seems like a ploy to get you to spend more money. Those who fall for that are probably the same people who do the douchey "swirl around" the glass before they sip. You don't go to a wine bar to test the wine! You go to DRINK the wine! Take my advice - skip the "sip" - go for the glass. In general, I'm confused about the pricing - take a look at their wine list online. It almost seems more reasonable to buy a bottle considering what they charge for a 10 oz glass (roughly half of the price of the bottle itself in most cases). Perhaps that is what they want you to do. With my wine (I decided on the Morassutti pinot grigio), I had the mushroom flatbread, which was tasty and had a nice thin crust. Service at the bar was excellent - Lindy, "The Bald Guy," is charming but not overly solicitous. Try to sit at the bar on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday and have Lindy take care of you. I came here for an event that provided various appetizers, including the block island calamari, hand hacked guacamole (awesome name...) with chips/celery/carrots, the mushroom flatbread, and the prosciutto flatbread. Having lived in San Diego for 4 years, I'd say I'm pretty picky about guac. The hand hacked guac is wholesomely chunky and fresh. I'd prefer it to be spicier, but that's easily remedied. The calamari comes with both rings and tentacles (my favorite) and is perfect with sriracha aioli. The mushroom flatbread is rich and creamy with just the right amount of earthy truffle oil. I didn't try the prosciutto flatbread, but everyone's favorite was the mushroom flatbread. read more
