Come hungry because there are some immense portions here. I'm Eastern European so I'm sort of familiar with the food here. It reminds me of home-cooked meals but saves me all of the work to cook it. The wait staff was attentive and helpful with the menu. I've eaten here three times and each time has been a good experience. I like the grilled menu because I try to eat healthier. I just get vegetables instead of the bread or fries. Most of the dishes seem to be served with fries or some sort of potato. For under $15 you can eat and probably still have leftovers. The goulash is great and so are the soups. If it's your first time eating Serbian food then you might want to order a couple different plates with your friends and try a little of everything. The burger (which is a big bunless patty the size of a plate) is very flavorful but too greasy for me. There are two other Serbian restaurants in the area (Zupa in Lyons, and Dunav) and each one has it's own positives and negatives. I think Skadarliya is a great addition. read more

I come here somewhat often and really enjoy this place. The food is top notch (I'm from the Balkans, so I grew up with this food) and VERY reasonably priced compared to some of the other European spots out there. The service is very friendly and fun, the drinks are strong and the atmosphere is casual during the day, but pleasantly dressy during weekend nights. All of my American friends ask me to take them here whenever we're looking for good food and a fun night! read more

Great Chicago place! Excellent ethnic/Serbian atmosphere. Decent food. Great layout with huge, old school booths. They have live music some nights... like when we were there. Again, ethnic. If you want cookie cutter... go elsewhere. If you want to be a prima donna... this is not your place. If you come in like a guest... and act like a guest... perfect place. This is about a strong a taste of Europe you can get... without flying. Chicagoans know you don't go to the European places for the service... so don't expect it. If you want your meal brought out in courses... order it one course at a time. Then it is fool proof. Don't act like a fool... and you won't be treated that way. Like in Europe... the owner is king here... so don't try to pull the race or bad service card. Food from this part of the world is served hot and cold... the same dish often times. Disappointing to say the least. My husband's family is Serbian and after years of homemade cevaps and sarma we had been dying to try this place! Fast forward to my first Mother's Day and hubby surprised me by bringing me here. I was excited to see they had music and a buffet so I could try lots of new food. I'm *almost* as American as apple pie but I am a true foodie and enjoy trying any cuisine you can throw at me. Walking in to the restaurant it was a really pretty looking establishment. That's what the 1 star is for. First red flag was that they couldn't find our reservation. Ok, we made it in OpenTable maybe it didn't go through. She asked us several times, as if annoyed, how many people were in our party. It was just my husband, myself and our 6mo son. We sat and the waiter greeted us in Serbian. He switched to English when he realized we didn't speak it. And I'm fairly certain that was the nail in our coffin. It took 20 mins to get 2 mimosas, and HALF AN HOUR before he came back to check on us, where we had to ask if we could order the buffet. Do you know how long that is with a baby?! Not that this had anything to do with it but the guy looked like he'd been on a 3 week coke binge. I'm just asking for the bathroom, you don't need to touch me OR my son. Now, on to the buffet... Someone please tell me where these great reviews are coming from bc the 5ft buffet had a bunch of (Dry) meats, pita, veggies and fruit. I wasn't impressed, it was so small and my mother in law's food is better. Places in Joliet have better food. And they're actually friendly! Never once were we offered water, refills, or even a high chair. Do you know how hard it is to eat with one hand and hold a squirmy baby with another? The waiter hovered over my husband as he signed for the bill. Lastly, there were so many smokers in front of the door and on the patio (BOTH OF WHICH ARE NOT LEGAL AND DISGUSTING AF WHEN I'M CARRYING MY CHILD THROUGH THE CLOUD OF CAMEL SMOKE). I told my husband that IF we were ever to try them again, which is doubtful, that we'd need to bring someone who spoke Serbian so we could be treated better. This place is super far from me and I was a bit hesitant to drive out but I'm glad I did! The place is very spacious and clean. The food is pretty good, while I wasn't impressed with all of it, for the most part it's great! The menu is stupid long, I panicked when I saw it because that many options could make me super indecisive. We ended up having the sarma because we both love it so much and I saw that there's a dish on the menu that I looooved having as a child- ustipci! What I didn't know was that leskovacki ustipci and the ones my grandma makes are two VERY different things. Both are delicious but I don't think I'll be ordering that dish again simply for the fact that there's a lot more on that menu that's worth checking out. I like the service as well! The server was super sweet and attentive. She got me water and when she saw I downed it in a second and asked for another one she brought out a larger glass, haha. This place requires you to valet park, NO THANK YOU. I parked in the street, nobody but me drives my car. The food was meh and they were out of a lot of things listed on their menu. Also, a few weeks back I was in the Home Depot Parking lot in Countryside and this restaurant's vehicle was flying thru parking lot not paying attention to anyone or anything and almost hit me and a few others in the parking lot crosswalk. The food here is is absolutely delicious!! They don't have everything on the menu available everyday, but everything I have tried has been good. My favorite is the bean soup with smoked meat (pasulj). Their Paprikash is great too. Salads are very large. The limoncello flutes are refreshing. I wish they delivered!!! read more

My best friend and I tried Skadarliya on Ogden ave . European (Serbian) food. The food was good, cocktails were nicely balanced flavors. I had cabbage rolls and lamb soup, my friend had mixed salad, salmon with cream sauce. Our B52 shots were the bomb. Lol. The atmosphere is modern, classy and fun. The place was quiet at 7:30 and livened up with music and a hip, beautiful crowd by 10:00. Our server, Sashka, was excellent. She told us about Sunday brunch from noon to 4:00 and when we asked about her accent and where she was from Sashka gave us a quick 5 min run down about how Yugoslavia was broken up into Masadonia, where she is from, and Serbia, where the other servers are from and Slovene. Where do I start. Never in my entire existence have I encountered such condescending and impertinent staff at Skadarliya. Just the other day, my two daughters went out to Skadarliya for dinner and coffee at around 8 pm. After just 30 minutes of them leaving, they came back home to tell me that the staff denied them service, for no apparent reason. The staff's excuse was that they were "underage" and couldn't sit there, when they had only ordered food and coffee. The manager sent the waiter to tell them that they had to get up and leave in the middle of eating their food. The staff of Skadarliya selectively picks and chooses who they wish to serve, based on their appearance, age, and ethnicity. The restaurant is extremely discriminatory and focuses solely on making themselves look good. Staff is lazy, cunning, and rude unless you are an important factor to their overall restaurant image. Mediterranean food at it's best, if you like meat this is the place to visit. It is a friendly atmosphere with friendly owners. First and foremost, the service. It's fantastic! The folks that work here are on top of things and do a really good job of helping us understand the menu items. I know I can't possibly be the only dude who stares up at the menu with question marks dancing in my head. I always drive past here, but never stopped in until today. Great Serbian food in the suburbs. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. Very clean. The bar lights up with different colors, that was really cool and different. The menu is in both Serbian and English. We had the sopska salata (chopped tomatoes, cucumber, onion with feta cheese on top). Stuffed pljeskavica (Serbian burger stuffed with cheese on the inside) with fries. Karadjordjeva snicla (cheese stuffed pork loin that is breaded and fried). And the cheese burek. Everything was really delicious. They give big portions and it's not expensive. Save room for dessert: The hazelnut truffle was amazing. The server was very sweet and courteous. The owner came by to every table and checked if everything was okay. That was really nice, it shows they care about their customers. I definitely would recommend and will take more friends here for dinner. read more

Read this - it will be worth your time, trust me. But where do I begin...discrimination, reservations, valet, status...? Let's start with arriving at Skadarliya; The first time I went there, I drove my Toyota. I arrived at a time when no one was really there - around 6pm. There were multiple empty spots open in the front, so as any normal person would do, I pull up and park. I was approached by the valet guy asking for my keys. I said, 'why do you need my keys? I just parked my own car in a spot that is not in anyone's way'. He said that that was their policy, I thought that was pointless but didn't want to argue and gave him the keys. When I came outside around 11:30, my car was nowhere to be seen. I asked the guy working that my car was in front when I arrived, and now it is no longer there - he said he will bring it, it was out back. Oh. In the back. At that moment I realized that the entire first row of cars consisted of Mercedes, BMW's, Bentley's, and God forbid they put a VW there - not high enough ranked - let's not even mention my Toyota. They care so much about how people perceive them that they want people driving by to say, "wow, what's this restaurant with all these Benzes, Mercedes', etc.?" They think people will think of them as high class. I am Serbian so I have the right to say this, this is a very typical Serbian mentality - materialistic - in other words, they're SELJACI. They invested money in that place, and it looks beautiful on the inside, but if only their mentality was on the same level. I wanted to confirm my beliefs of them discriminating people who are not wealthy, and in about a few weeks I called up my friend and we drove his BMW. To my confirmation, they took his keys, moved this random Chrysler out of the way and parked our BMW right in front. Our car did not move an inch the entire night - they are using cars to represent the kind of people they want in their restaurant and to make their restaurant look better; Wealthy people who will spend hundreds of dollars at their mediocre establishment. Picture a homeless person getting dipped in liquid gold. It's amusing how they want to be perceived 'high class' in a very poorly rated neighborhood (compared to the surrounding LaGrange, Hinsdale, Oak Brook). They wish they were downtown Chicago among the very highly rated restaurants - sorry to break it to you, you're in Brookfield, don't act like you're Tavern on Rush in the Gold Coast. They also discriminate on who will sit and where they will sit. This did not happen when they first opened, they would let anyone sit anywhere because they needed the business. Now that their egos have risen, they save the best tables for the wealthier friends and guests who will drop a lot of $ (remember, the ones with the Beemers). They treat this place like it's a high class club, with their bouncers being selective on who will sit where, even asking some teens to leave the place. This is not a club nor a lounge - last time I checked this is a RESTAURANT and I have seen INFANTS at their place at midnight. The food: Who makes pleskavice and cevapi without the lepina?
