A good local skate shop. It was smaller than I was expecting and a lot of the clothing space was dedicated to their shop merch. They had every category of what you'd expect to find in a skate shop but not necessarily exactly the item you're hoping to buy. They also offer lessons on the halfpipe/miniramp in the back, but we did not try those. read more

For years I've been going from skateboard shop to skateboard shop buying decks, trucks, wheels, bearings - you know, all that stuff to make my skateboarding son a happy camper. Nice thing that the boys at Skateworks know my son and set me up every time I go in there. It's a no-brainer visit and I've never had to go back for a trade. Well, not me. My son bought a pair of skate shoes there today and they gave him the wrong box - two left shoes and not even a matching set. At least he has no problem taking them back and getting the right shoes. Skate Works in Los Altos is great! They helped me sell my son's old board and gave me a good price on a new one. They have helped us repair the boards and have given good advice. I could have driven farther to save a couple bucks, but its not worth it, because in the long run I have saved money here by getting good advice and being able to buy quality gear. Yet again, the kids are all right! Why do we keep doubting them? I haven't been here that much, but it's so charming and great that it's across the street from a school. Extra points for the great advice from both the people working there and the random patrons coming in and out of the store. One of the guys my age came in when I was there and went into a big war story about his wrecked knee, properly injecting horror stories until the point where I realized he was talking about BMX bike accidents. War stories are their own thing, and Skate Works is comfortable and breezy enough for random strangers to try to (unsuccessfully) scare each other. This place is all about skateboards, and for chicks it's just so great that they have a chidren's section too just like 510 Skateboards. Yes, you too can get the right t-shirts you want that actually fit, not the Skateboard chick fashion versions that are so tight that you can't even skate in. The skate works kids gave me nice advice about local skateparks and how to tackle a pool ("just roll around at the bottom!"). I know as they grow older they'll keep it fun! There's a movie theater there too, totally great! It'd be a great place for all the boys with broken legs to go and watch and learn until they healed and got well again. read more

Skate Works is an awesome shop for both amateur and novice skateboarders. Jason was so friendly, knowledgable, and patient with our 11-year old daughter and was instrumental in helping her pick out the right board for her. She came into the store with a particular trendy board in mind, but after getting to know her personality, goals, and usage experience was able to steer her into a more complete multi-use board than the trendy single use board she had thought she wanted. To make things even more special for her, he customized her board to her liking by suggesting hot pink grip tape and different colored wheels. Since my daughter had saved up her money from Christmas, Valentina's Day, and Easter to buy this board, making her happy about the purchase was key to keeping her interested in riding it. Our little 6 year old son is expressing an interest in skateboarding and when the times comes for his board, we will definitely be consulting with Jason and Skate Works again. Went in tonight looking for some new roller derby skates (I'm a newb myself) and I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for but Jason was very helpful and knowledgeable. If you're looking for Roller Derby gear, this is a great option. I was able to get my pads and helmet here no problem, and the blonde dude who was working there was very helpful. (I was actually pretty impressed at how well he handled a group of rambunctious pre-teen boys in the store, and still managed to make sure I found what I needed.) My only complaint as it were, is that I wish they had some lower priced skates- all I saw were $200+ options. I'd love if they carried some options closer to the $100-120 price range. read more

GREAT skate shop! Just bought a board and some shoes here on the posted review date. Skateworks exceeded my expectations on all fronts. Taylor up front was VERY helpful (and cool!) and helped me find the perfect "combination." He was very knowledgeable about explaining the different types of boards out there, including fine details such as their wheel types and which ones are best for which uses. Needing shoes, he was also very prompt in assisting me. Went into the back, and was out in a flash! The only slightly negative thing I will say is that their selection of helmets was a bit limited, so that was the only thing I will have to obtain elsewhere. The expert service, though, when combined with the otherwise great options, Skateworks gets an A+! read more

Tucked away in Downtown Los Altos, the location for this store is quite random. With that being daid Skate Works is really cool. Came here a few months ago because someone stole my Anti-Hero board in San Mateo and I needed a new one. There is a whole lot of DLX boards here and if you know anything about deck quality you know DLX is one if the best. I was specifically looking for a Real Low Pro ii Deck and I ended up getting the Justin Brock Baker's Dozen Deck. The gentleman working there kindly set my deck up with some size 54 Bones STF wheels, Bones Reds Bearings and Indi Trucks. The guy setting up the deck was being helped by 2 little guys talking a mile a minute who were really excited I was getting a new board he referred to as "shop rats." Skate Works also has a small mini ramp in the back of the store for customers to skate. Great selection of clothing apparel as well. Another cool thing is they carry a lot of Anti-Hero decks; like graphics I never seen anywhere before and that is always a plus in my book. If you're really into skateboarding and prefer not to go to teeny bopper spots like zumeiz for your gear check this place out. read more

They have a ton of experience and knowledge. I have two sons (11 and 13) and they have been taking lessons with Andrew for a couple of years. They LOVE it and it's been great for their overall confidence, fitness, and coordination. Every instructor has been fantastic and I love that they provide all the equipment (boards, pads, helmets) for lessons. Look at me. I never skate boarded before and never skated or skied. But I decided it time to try. Im so happy I went to the Skate Work in Redwood City. I thought I would get a cool skate board so I could do all kiinds of cool tricks, but the guys here suggested I try first to use a long board. They said they recommend this because I dont have much of the experience with balance sport or moving on something . Except bicycle. So with their wonderful help, I now have a skate board and I go to the empty lot. Only thing I wonder is if they try to sell me this board so I buy another regular board later when I get better. But this board is tough enough. Maybe if I start with the small short board, I would quite because of the frustration. I found a good place for riding the skate board a Red Morton park in Redwood City. No dish for me, just the small ramp. Lots of fun thanks to the Skate Works. read more

This is a great place for anyone looking to buy a board. I've only been riding a longboard for a couple months now, but I was able to find one that's really suited for me and high quality. I used to ride a cheap Kryptonics board from Target, but now I'm so much happier with the one I custom-made at Skateworks. The turning radius is literally twice as tight, and I feel incredibly balanced on my new board. I can go at full speed for as long as I want without feeling any worry that I'll lose my balance. The owner was super friendly and cool, even though I went in just before closing time to scope out the place. He answered all my questions about board lengths, decks, prices, and let me ride a couple before putting the deck I liked on hold in the back. I returned a couple days later, and custom-made my board. They recommended a set of trucks and higher quality bearings to me, and even my friend admits the higher quality bearings are a better choice, since he has to switch out his cheap ones every couple months so it ends up costing more for him. All in all, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase, and I won't ever let my new board out of my sight. 10/10 read more

Not only is Jason (the owner) a good guy; easy to talk to, likes kids, works well with kids, has his dog in the store, always in a good mood, etc, BUT he is so honest. I was in the store with my almost 13 year old son buying a helmet. After we got home I realized that my wallet was missing. The next morning, Jason called me to let me know that he had my wallet in a secure place and I could come by any time to pick it up! I was sooooooooo relieved and so thankful that he had my wallet.
