I decided to stop by Skrimp Shack since I was craving fried seafood. I called ahead to see if I could order over the phone but was told that I could only order online or in person. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and the place was pretty clean. The menu included sandwiches, tacos and po'boys and baskets and they offered fried shrimp, fish, chicken, scallops and oysters. I decided on the Shack Pack Basket, which included 4 shrimp and fish, and the Big Cat Basket, which was just catfish. I also ordered a side of cole slaw. The food was ready in about 10 minutes which was very impressive. All the seafood tasted fresh and was seasoned pretty well. It definitely hit the spot! They offer standard Pepsi/Coke beverage options, and there's a decent amount of indoor seating if you want to dine in. I'm giving it 4 stars mainly because of the chicken sandwich. I didn't realize it was made with chicken bites/tenders between the bun, and personally, I'm not a big fan of that style of sandwich. If I had known ahead of time, I probably would've chosen something else. To be fair, the chicken was flavorful with a nice crunch -- I ended up just eating them like chicken tenders alongside my shrimp. Lunch at the Skrimp Shack did not disappoint! I ordered the spicy shrimp basket in the dinner portion size. 20 pieces of lightly breaded shrimp and a huge load of fries left me stuffed and happy! The spice level was not very high, but the flavor was there. Not overly greasy like you might expect from fried foods. Come to this place hungry and leave happy. This place is in a small strip mall next to a Home Depot and is truly a hidden gem for good seafood. I walked in and was certainly not wowed by the atmosphere. The loud music reverberating from the kitchen made it difficult for me to have a conversation with the girl at the counter who is helping me decide what to eat. I saw on their yelp review that they had soup so the first thing I asked about is what kind they had available and the girl did not know when I asked her. After this and the loud music coming from the kitchen I came close to walking out without ordering but I remembered it was listed #1 on Yelp in this area so I placed an order TO GO. I ordered a haddock sandwich with french fries on the side and I opted to try their crab chowder. After ordering my food was ready within 10 minutes and I made my way back to my hotel to try out the food. I have ordered some big fish sandwiches before but never won this big. There was three layers of breaded haddock on the sandwich and it didn't need any sauces whatsoever. The seasoning and the taste was spot on!! The fries were also very tasty and cooked to perfection. And asked for that bowl of soup, wow. Loaded with crab potatoes and corn, seasoned perfectly, and very tasty. First time here and it was amazing! My friend and I came in around 1:00 and ordered and the food took a while but everything was so fresh. As soon as we got our food, the line starting getting longer and longer. The atmosphere is great. I ordered the mac and cheese it was sooooo good, it's white cheddar so expect something different than the normal. Out of some of the Skrimp Shack locations that I have frequented in the Hampton Roads area (Newport News, Hampton, and Suffolk), this one is the only one where I stepped foot into the restaurant and automatically said, "No thanks". As soon as I walked in, the smell of old, burnt grease hit me like a truck. People appeared to be restless with the look of agitation while sitting in the dining chairs waiting for their orders. The kitchen's cleanliness was questionable. I could see one man in the back taking his time making the orders. As we were waiting to order our food, we saw this man with a lot of open wounds along his arm. I will not judge this man or mock this man because his health situation is not my business; however, his hygiene is my business if he is going to be making and preparing my food. He should have been asked to cover them with long sleeves. He did not appear to change his gloves frequently either because when he took them off, there was a bunch of residue or gunk that came off the gloves. We did not even order and went somewhere else instead. This will not be a Skrimp Shack location that we will return to. Even Feather&Fin would have been a better option. read more

My sons asked for seafood dinner but local non-fast food places don't offer kids' fish and chips (Capt Groovy's, Longboards, etc); adult plates @ $18 (x2) for 8/10yo's wasn't happening either! Yelp to the rescue! Read the reviews, saw it was semi-close, hopped in our mini-van (hardcore I know) and off we went. If it wasn't for Yelp's Maps/Directions option, I would have missed it, tucked immediately to the right of Home Depot (contractor pickup side). Shared parking lot was steady but there were spaces on a Friday night. When we entered, my FoMO (fear of more options) was a little intimidated by the chalkboard menu. The cashier didn't say much but, when asked, she patiently and politely answered my questions. Wouldn't you know my boys changed their "fish and chips" tune when they saw the kids "skrimp" (say it right) basket? For $7.25 (x2), it included a side and drink: one mac n cheese, the other for fries. I went with the whiting fish tacos, grilled instead of fried, with a small side of collards ($7.15 + $1.95). Given the ~$26 for what appeared at first glance to be less than average portions, I wanted to HATE the food. Impossible! The kids devoured their shrimp, nearly biting my hand when I snuck one. Good-sized and piping hot (even after the drive home) with a brilliantly light and crispy breading that served a brisk, peppery bite. A sneak of their sides proved to be ok, not superb but not terrible either. My fish tacos were unexpectedly good; a healthy sized piece of fish seared nicely with a hot, tender and flavorful inside, covered in iceberg lettuce and cheese. I really appreciated the option to have it grilled as fried foods don't sit well with me or my cholesterol levels. A few years ago I dined at the original Newport News location. I'm happy to see that business is thriving enough to expand to other areas. The food taste and preparation is consistent and I've always been happy with my food. I'm a stickler for my fish being prepared properly. No heat lamps or reheating at all. All fish is cooked to order. Short on time? Call your order in and it'll be piping hot when you get there. I do wish they didn't put sugar in their collard greens. It wasn't a heavy presence but noticeable. Clean tables and a television overhead if you need entertainment while dining in or waiting for your to go order. Military discounts (10% at the writing of this review) are offered on Tuesdays. There are sandwich options, "baskets" and dinners as well as choices if you are trying to feed a large number of people. I'll definitely return to get my fix. read more

I got the catfish basket, added 4 shrimp and couldn't decide on a side so I got the: the Mac and cheese, collard greens, and the fried okra. The fish was breaded and fried really well. The seafood was really good. There was a bit of seasoning but not a lot. I would've preferred a little more seasoning. I was really surprised that I didn't like any of the sides. Shrimp shacks food is always amazing. Good ol' southern fried food. I highly recommend their Mac and cheese and green beans for the sides. It's a white cheddar Mac with other cheeses but it's super creamy and delicious. My husband loves their fried chicken sandwich because it's huge and the spicy sauce makes it even better. I usually get the Po Boys and I highly recommend asking for extra spicy sauce on the side. Their sweet potato fries aren't the best and I wasn't crazy about the po boys with crabmeat. The crab meat made the po boys have a fishy seafood taste which I wasn't a fan of. But I highly recommend the spicy chicken sandwich and regular Shrimp Po Boys with spicy sauce. Believe me when I say, I haven't had a good fish sandwich in YEARS! IMO, the whiting fish sandwich was a solid 10!!! My daughter, who has never had a whiting fish sandwich, agreed! It was HUGE, flavorful, & had the right amount of crispiness. I forgot to ask if they had hot sauce to-go. They included tartar sauce. Very cool! I forgot I liked tartar. I love seafood and this place has a nice selection of it. My trip brought me wanting the fish and shrimp Platter. The amount you get fit the bill and the taste was on point. It wasn't salty, the batter was crispy but what took it to the top was the spicy sauce that is used on the Po Boy sandwich. I'm ecstatic that The Skrimp Shack has made its way to Norfolk. I no longer have to go on the other side of the water for their delicious shrimp and sauce. I need them to be open on Mondays though, what's up with that? This location is by far the best. Their bread was so fresh and baked to perfection.
