Great food at a good price. Recommend the Crab Rangoon appetizer. The edamame is good, beware the spicy version is really spicy. All the rolls I've tried were really good. Big bonus- they are open later than a lot of places on the island. The service is friendly and efficient. The ambiance is casual with big screen tvs that usually have sports on. I've been to Texas twice now, and somehow, both times I ended up eating sushi. One thing I've learned? Texans really love putting cream cheese in their sushi. That's a sin. Gross. At Sky Bar, you can't request "no cream cheese" on their happy hour sushi, which was already a strike against it for me. The happy hour deal itself isn't really worth it either--the sushi comes as individual pieces, and for the price, it just doesn't feel like a good value. This is a complicated review. First of all the restaurant decor and service is super. I wish I just got sushi, but we had done a long trip, and I just was not in the mood for a pure sushi dinner. Also, it was Sunday and there was not a lot of other choices. But I did get three pieces of tuna and they were really good and the wasabi was authentic. I did think they were a little thinly sliced. My shrimp tempura was pretty good. However my wife's teriyaki salmon dish was not great. Her salmon was overcooked and the vegetables were not great. The moral of the story is when you go to a sushi place get the sushi. I often find the other stuff is either OK or not so great, seems to be the universal rule. Where do I start? Pros: 1) Peak Staff, both the waiter and the manager who were attentive and solicitous, to a fault. 10/10. 2) Food while a bit slow was not prepared by Chef Mike. I'd rate it 8/10. 3) Ambiance was excellent, we sat on the sidewalk at an outdoor table and enjoyed the whole evening. Inside was 70 degrees and you can watch a lot of the action so that's also cool. 10/10 Cons: 1) Mixologist needs to take a refresher course. Cocktails were expensive but off balanced, meaning a pervasive flavor overpowered the cocktail. The selection was good however the execution was 3/10. I heartily recommend this location any local or tourist visiting Galveston, unless you a permanent bitter pill, you will enjoy this restaurant, it's food, and especially it's service. read more

We came in during New Years Eve, and were comfortably sat at the sushi bar as it was a packed house. Service was prompt and kind, and the fish is QUALITY. Decided to try this place for dinner. There's limited indoor seating, and the space is pretty narrow. The service is okay; was a bit slow but it was also peak business hours for a weekend dinner! Ordered the asian noodle soup because it was a cold night. It was pretty filling and had a good amount of protein and veggies! It was a little bland, but nonetheless still good! Okay, so I was really tempted to gatekeep this little find, but it wouldn't be fair to y'all or the hardworking Sky Bar staff! Seriously, some of the best sushi and cocktails we have had - and we eat out A LOT! The Happy Hour is wonderful because it's a late HH from 5-10. I am a crab ragoon connoisseur, and they have, bar none, THE BEST! Our server, Seth, was spot on. He said he had only been there a few weeks, but you wouldn't know based on his high service level. Seth was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive. The manager, Robert, made several stops by our table and the other guests to check on everything. He jumped in and helped servers as needed. We are in Galveston every month or so, and will definitely be will definitely be adding Sky Bar to our restaurant stops. Looking for a later Happy Hour, fabulous food and terrific service? Giving 4 stars only because the shumai (siomai) seemed like it came out of a microwaveable packaging that you get at Trader Joe's (see picture--one left since my company are the rest) I know coz that's were I get my shumai fix where I live where Asian stuff are scarce. However they still tasted good. The Chirashi bowl was great, tasted fresh. Asked to substitute the tamago (since I seem to get some allergy from it) with unagi--but got one sloppy unagi piece. Didn't ruin my bowl, it was still great. I like it also because it didn't have that much rice (cutting on carbs). Some bowls I've had had more rice than fish; this one was great The rolls esp the Shaggy roll was bomb! It's crunch roll with cream cheese; have not had cream cheese in crunch roll before but this one was awesome. The gyoza and fried rolls were not bad as well as the coconut shrimps. Service-wise, DJ, our waitress was also awesome; she was very nice, pleasant and just great. Got our food served quickly. Ambience was cozy. Came in at the right time. We came here on a Thursday night. Everything was good there. Our server did a great job and the food and drinks came out promptly. It was Happy Hour until closed ($5 martinis Thursday Special) so we ordered lychee martinis and got the sashimi platter. Also had edamame and calamari. The sashimi was fresh and no cheap tilapia is served here. Ever. The tuna tower was deliciously packed with flavor on each level and one of the few places that isn't afraid of spiciness. The tenderloin skewers were loaded down with fat shrimp, the usual veggies and the beef could be cut with a fork it was that tender. DJ was our server and an unexpected delight. In fact the chefs, to the back crew and more were absolute perfection. I'm embarrassed to say I don't know why I haven't been here before but I'll definitely be back. My Mom, husband and I ate here from out of town and truthfully, I wish I had looked them up here on Yelp before we made our trip to the island. First, we got there and they asked for our name and phone number. That isn't a issue, but my first red flag was when the person who seemed like the manager failed to give us an actual wait time. We waited outside, where there is no seating for guests, and then we finally got seated. They explained their card reader/wifi was down and we would need to pay in cash. The hostess seated us and another person, who also seemed to hover towards the hostess stand to just sit, came and took our drink order. We knew what we wanted for appetizer; and ordered the Crab Rangoon. We received them from the manager, and he's the one that also had to bring us plates. I was already fumming at this point. The Rangoons were well received by my husband but I found them to be way too peppery. It wasn't for another 10-15 she came by and took our order. Walked by several times; hung out behind the sushi bar, wandered the the hostess stand, basically ANYTHING but handle our table. My Mom ordered Steak Teriyaki, and my husband and I ordered 3 sushi rolls: The California, The Sky Bar Rock N Roll Sushi and The Green Lobster roll. My mom got her food first AND that is when we were told Sushi was backed up. Yet again, no inclination of a time frame. I took photos of the food as it came as a time stamp. We got the Crab Rangoon at 9:07pm, my Mom got hers at 9:20pm and we got the first two sushi rolls at 9:37pm, and then we got our last roll at 9:44pm. We were seated at 8:45pm. It took an hour to FINALLY get all of our food. My Mom was half way through her plate and the only explanation we got was that the sushi guy was really backed up. It would have been incredibly nice to have been told that when we first hit the door. You were concerned enough to make sure you had proper payment since your card machines were down. Your lack of communication and your lack of consideration have left an awful taste in my mouth. Your food was good, but it was not THAT good. Do better, and learn from your slow days. Until then, we will never come back when we visit the island. read more

Well I took way too long to get to this place. Many raved about their happy hour and now I'm another! Spectacular martinis. The food was orgasmic... as you can see in the photos, we went a bit nuts. I love how the menu is full of variety and allows you to get just a piece when it comes to sushi. The happy hour prices can't be beat! We did get the normal dish of the tuna tower and that was such a good idea. It sounded too good to pass up. As far as top favorites go, this place has the best seaweed salad around, and some of the best crab rangoons... Nam Thai in Kemah has the other best rangoons! I'll be working my way through the martini and sushi list for many visits to come. read more

I went there 4 times overall, all good services but one time server dropped the check when we just started eating, was kinda rude. Place is pretty small, bar has really bright light, kinda hurt your eyes. But the fooooodddd The rolls are amazing, steaks are delicious i got sumo steak 4 times cuz it was so goodd. Came here for dinner with a friend. I love sushi, so I was eager to see what Galveston sushi restaurants were like. This place held its own. It's important to note that I came during happy hour. I didn't plan it that way, but I'm glad it worked out in my favor! Appetizers were all between $3.50 and $4.50. Specialty drinks were $6.50. And standard cocktails and wells were $4. I started off with the chicken gyoza, and my friend got the shrimp dumplings. She opted to get them fried instead of steamed. Both were pretty good, but I liked the shrimp better. I also got the coastal martini. I didn't love it, but it was okay to start with. For my sushi, I ordered the Dragonfly Roll and the Tri Star. Both were delicious! The Dragonfly was definitely the star of the show tho. It was very flavorful and came with 8 pieces. Between rolls, I also polished of a whiskey cranberry and my friend's drink as well. She didn't like hers at all, so I was happy to be of service. Gotta love happy hour! Overall, the sushi was good, but I felt it was a little overpriced. Especially for some of the rolls that only had 5 pieces like the Tri Star. But the happy hour menu is pretty damn good. I'll be back again to try some different drinks and rolls! read more

I can't say enough about this place. We started out only delivery and I these guys are on time and if they are gonna be late they call. The food, well I am not a refined food critique but I have had my fair share of yuk and delish. Hands down this place is delish!! It's a hefty menu and so far I have tried rolls, sushi, fried rice combo, etc etc etc and guess what.... I tried most of that via the delivery service. However, I have been to the actual brick and mortar and dined three times. Place is small and the lighting is bright but the folks that pay attention to you and get you that drink and that hot food all smiles!! If you haven't been you won't be disappointed! 4 stars for the sushi and calamari! Came on Monday. Apparently every weekday is happy hour from opening to closing. For $5, the seven spiced calamari was an awesome deal. The calamari was seasoned and fried well. The sauce that came along with the calamari was delicious. The sauce was tangy and had a nice kick. As for the sushi, I ordered by piece which was approximately $2 a piece. Sushi was decent! My favorite was the smoked salmon and unagi. The only letdown was the sushi rice. It was slightly dry but it did stay together rand was easy to pop into my mouth. Service was great though. Definitely worth the visit to fulfill sushi cravings.
