This place is a totally chilled and quiet spot to grab coffee, enjoy a meal and have nice chats if you are visiting with others. I'd met a friend here after work on a very cold November evening. We'd enjoyed hot tea and I'd ordered their breaded chicken cutlet on a role with french fries. I have a thing for having chicken cutlet sandwiches at diners. I'd totally enjoyed my meal. I'm weird like this but, I was surprised by how much chicken cutlet they served. I have to say their breaded chicken cutlet is yummy. This is my go to breakfast spot whenever I'm in the city. The food is consistently good breakfast food and the staff is friendly and the service is fast. I ordered a short stack of pancakes and corned beef hash with a side of hash browns. The pancakes makes were amazing. They were soft and fluffy and tasted great. The corned beef hash was grilled perfectly. The big letdown was the hash browns. They were tasteless and bland. Overall I had a good breakfast and the waitress was so sweet. She really loves her job. Our friend in town recommended this place, and we're glad she did. The service was fantastic. Lizeth brought our drinks right away, and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu and talk to each other. She was cordial, efficient, and there when we needed her. I'm not sure how long the Skylight Diner has been around but I'm confident it will be around for a long time to come. My friend and I decided to garb a pre-movie night dinner. Truth be told, I didn't want to have to pay through the nose at the movies and so the next best thing was to go grab something non fried and fresh. Me and my mom stopped by the Skylight Diner today to get a small bite and kill time while we waited for our bus back to DC. We shared a really good BLT and some sodas. After looking at the desserts in the dessert case we decided to split a piece of lemon meringue pie which was the right amount of sweet and tart. Our server was friendly and attentive. Actually all the staff we encountered while we were there were friendly. They also had a clean women's bathroom. Sorry no picture, but if I had to describe our food the sandwich had crisp bacon with fresh lettuce and tomato on lightly toasted bread. And that pie had a mile high meringue with a light lemon filling which had a small layer a cake between the meringue (which I've never had) and the lemon filling that tasted like there was a hint of toasted coconut in it. This diner is directly across from the bus stop, which is the only reason we stopped in. This was our second visit. The place still looks the same....old and dirty. The lady at the cash register....I guess she "greets" and seats???? Well, she seems to be grumpy and lacking words. Our server was prompt, quick with greeting us (even before we sat down!), taking the order, bringing the food and packing the food. Horrible food! I mean come on it's NYC and you can't do diner food right? I came here with a large group of friends and ordered a Greek Gyro platter. To my surprise I was given something that looked like processed fake meat. It wasn't even real lamb! The sauce was literally like something they slapped together, it wasn't real Tzaki sauce at all! I was so hungry that I left nearly all the food on my plate and had to eat from my friend's plate which was a little more decent than my own. Came here on a busy Saturday morning when I visited New York to see a Christmas show. This diner wasn't too crowded when we first arrived but it was sorta a long wait to be seated. My friend said the last time he came, he was able to sit at the bar area if there were open spots, but when we went to sit down-we were told to wait in line. When we sat down, they had a pretty nice menu, but I just wanted something simple, so got an everything bagel with cream cheese and an oatmeal. The bagel was so fluffy and I found out that they are freshly made there- which is really interesting. The oatmeal was just eh... Ive had better. My friend ordered french toast with sausage and he seemed really satisfied with what he ordered- he wasn't talking too much while he was eating... and that was definitely a sign-since hes a talker. As we sat there, crowds and crowds of people were coming in and the manager and the staff did an amazing job of keeping track of the orders and sending them out while checking each plate that went out. It was interesting to watch the cooks and waitstaff work right in front of you to get all the meals out on time. I was impressed by how hard each person was working in there. When it came to the bill- it was pretty decent for what we got and we were both satisfied. I could eat at a diner every day! I love the sounds! The clinking glassware, the clanging silverware, the chattering customers, the chiming cash register... all of it! The Skylight Diner did not disappoint. We slid into a retro booth next to a window and enjoyed our New York City view of people bustling by. It was early and the place was packed. Coffees all around! A wall was stacked high with cereals, while the counters were lined with cake stands full of sweets and pastries. I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode. Our server was as perky as the coffee!
