While we were looking over the menu, the owner who has been in the business for 55 years overheard our debate and confidently recommended the Spanish three-egg omelet, even promising that if we didn't like it, it would be on the house. That alone set the tone for the exceptional hospitality that followed. As we continued chatting, he brought over a fresh fruit bowl, followed by outstanding grape leaves accompanied by tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese infused with olive oil and lemon juice. We ended up trying three different omelettes, and each had its own character. The California omelette, filled with avocado and tomatoes, was excellent and came with generous sides of potatoes and toast. The peasant omelette with green onion, mozzarella, and bacon was flavorful and yummy. The Spanish omelette, paired with its sauce was superb. We also ordered the big breakfast, which came with eggs, sausage and wonderfully fluffy pancakes served with maple syrup. The place was buzzing for brunch, full of energy yet warm and welcoming. I was craving diner food and was not disappointed coming into Townhouse! It had the perfect diner vibes - chill, just enough people but not crowded/empty and retro decor. It had giant menus (coupled with giant portions) and our server was very nice and kind. I got the Nutella pancakes that came with walnuts, bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream - SO good' My partner got the jalapeño cheddar onion omelette with home fries, which he was able to finish and said it was very tasty. The menu is extensive, and I had trouble narrowing down what I wanted, but I was very satisfied with my Gyro Wrap. The meat inside the wrap was delicious, juicy, and tender, and this hit the spot!! On our brief recent trip to NYC, Jamie W and I ended up going to well established diners for breakfast every morning. Such a touristy thing to do, I know. B&H Dairy, La Bonbonniere, and EJ's Luncheonette were all satisfying in their own ways, but unfortunately I can't really say the same about this old school Midtown East diner. I think it started with the owner. Clearly he must've felt some customers took advantage of his business, which might explain his explicit surcharges for making substitutions and accommodating plate sharing. Neither applied to me and Jamie W, but the intent of the message was pretty clear. We ordered simply. Tucked away in Midtown East is an old fashioned, family owned diner. Light beams in from windows in the front. Booths line one side of the restaurant while on the other there is a long bar you can sit at. I visited Townhouse Diner in the mid afternoon so it was rather empty and quiet. The gent who appeared to be the owner (or manager) checked on me immediately and in no time I had a much needed glass of water and a menu in front of me. I wound up ordering my standard omelette: spinach, mushroom and Swiss cheese. My food came out quickly and it was still nice and hot. The omelette was good! Good amount of eggs and vegetables. I had some cole slaw in place of hash browns and they were good (not quite at the level of Sarge's but that's a high bar). The rye toast was good though I prefer my toast a bit more brown than they did it. Much to my surprise, my meal ended with a complimentary fruit plate - something I've legit never seen at a diner before! Overall I was very happy with my meal. Clean diner on Murray Hill with booths and bar seating. The staff wasn't chatty but, more importantly, they were responsive and our orders came out correct. We shared a bowl of oatmeal with sliced banana, plus the 3 egg California omelette with sliced pork sausage added in. Very tasty! When I want a solid meal or a late night snack along with a genuinely friendly greeting, I head straight to the Townhouse Diner. A Murray Hill neighborhood staple for decades, the place is a retro time warp - in the best possible way. I usually see regulars when I go there, a good sign in my book. They added some new items since I was last there, including egg frittatas and the requisite avocado toast lol. I chose the Greek frittata with spinach, feta cheese and tomato, requesting that the fries be served on the side instead of mixed into the frittata (as is standard there). Rather than the deep dish frittata I've had elsewhere, Townhouse's version is a thin round slice of egg/veggies with nicely charred edges. Really delicious. And the fries were perfectly cooked, crispy and hot. I've also had lentil soup, burgers and other breakfast items there over the years and was never disappointed. I hope the Townhouse stays open for many more years, a beacon of culinary steadfastness and warmth in a fast changing city. read more

Sunday morning we wanted to get breakfast at a diner, so we decided to try out Townhouse Diner. Thankfully, when we went around 11 am, there were lots of tables open so we didn't have to wait. They had a wide selection of breakfast foods like wraps, sandwiches, omelettes, skillets, eggs, etc. I chose corned beef hash and eggs (I frequently order this at diners), which also came with a side of potatoes and toast. Food: I've tried lots of different variations of corned beef hash because I like to order this for breakfast at different restaurants I go to. I was very unimpressed with this one. It's probably my least favorite corned beef hash I've ever tried or close to the bottom of my list. The texture of the corned beef hash was very soft and mushy which I didn't like. I'm used to having corned beef hash that has potatoes mixed in with the corned beef and fried so there is some crunch to it. This just felt like blended up corned beef with potatoes added to the side. My friends got one of the breakfast sandwiches and really liked hers, so there are probably some menu items that are better options than the corned beef hash. Service: We were pleased with the quick and friendly service here, and we liked that we didn't have to wait for a table. By the time we had left, pretty much every table was now full, but they did have some outdoor dining tables still open. Price: This diner was a little more expensive than what I was expecting for the quality and setting of the diner. This diner is very close to nyu outpatient procedures. I was greeted by the employees. Warm and welcoming. The food was very good! Quick service(procedure was just an hour). I noticed the other guests were regulars and were treated like family. The owner, I think, brought me a free glass of orange juice. When I went to pay... he sincerely was interested in my story. My wife's breakfast sandwich was huge and delicious. My kids pancakes were perfect, bagels and lox were solid, potatoes were piping hot and delicious. Clearly the place has been around for a while, they are experienced in every way. The service is really what stood out. The owner of this establishment was working behind the counter. He's such an outgoing, good natured man. He immediately greeted our family when we entered, sat us, and upsold us on hot chocolates for the kids! Haha. I had the Pizza Bagels, there were four but I forgot to take a picture before I started because I was starving. Pretty greasy, but it wasn't an issue for me. The sauce was tasty, and the cheese felt like the cheese off of a regular pizza. I will say the bagel wasn't crunchy, which is what I was expecting. Waiters were very polite and friendly, which was welcoming this morning. There are plastic barriers in between the booths where I sat, so if Covid is an issue for you, I recommend this place.
