Let me start by saying we go up to Mt. Hood quite a bit and have eaten at quite a few places along the way. After stopping at Skyway we will never be stopping anywhere else again. Yes, it is that good and all cooked from scratch! As a first timer get the sampler so you can try all the smoked meats. The Mac and cheese is ridiculously good. You can add "hook ups" baked into the Mac and cheese of just about anything you can think of. Now that we have been there quite a few times I have found my favorite thing to do is just order things for the table and split. The bbq sampler for the perfectly cooked ribs is a must. Went there last night at 8:10 to have a beer and watch the band. Were told they were not serving food. When we stated we just wanted to get a beer from the bar and sit on the benches or stand, we were told "were all done with that!!!" very rudely. Feel bad for the bands that work so hard to put on a show just to have the venue turn away customers. Place used to be pretty good but as they've become busier, things have definitely gone downhill. Staff are consistently stressed. Wait times are significantly increased for food. Food is overall decent but not great barbecue, good for the Hoodland area but not as good of barbecue as you would get in Portland. The mac'n'cheese is good like everyone says. Ambiance is still good-classic mountain feel. The star is for the fried pickles-those are still great. read more

I got a burger and my oh my was the patty PERFECT. I don't think I have ever had a juiciest burger ever in my life. However this burger patty was cooked it tasted like absolute heaven. The juices actually dripped down my hand into the basket and it tasted so wonderful, I believe it was cooked in butter but it was absolutely heaven. My boyfriend got the Reuben - which was also fantastic. Now the sauerkraut they use must be house made - it tasted so fresh and not sour as per usual. I loved the decorations in this restaurant, there were little trinkets everywhere what an awesome vibe. The service was fantastic, they were pretty busy but there was someone at our table every 5 min refilling water or asking how the food is or if we needed anything. I want to return and order some other things off the menu because it truly is a fabulous menu. It kinda sucks that the entrees don't come with a side like fries but they do allow you to order sides for extra $$. As a bit of a BBQ aficionado, I came in with modest expectations. My expectations were greatly exceeded. I think Skyway is better than the famous Salt Lick in Texas and I rank it the second best BBQ in Oregon. We started with the boat of Mac-n-cheese, some of the best I've ever had. For main course we split The Sampler and added a tasting of pastrami. I rarely see pastrami at BBQ places, but wow was it good. If I ever just get a sandwich here I'll go with that as my meat. I also loved the ribs and the brisket was very good. I liked the pulled pork, but next time I'll substitute it for the pastrami. I was hesitant to get the lumpy mashers as a side because I pictured mashed potatoes with chunks of hard, undercooked potato. This was not the case, the lumpy mashers were very good, mostly creamy with just small chunks of perfectly cooked potato. I will be coming back as often as possible whenever we're in the Mt Hood area. read more

While the food was decent, our visit to Skyway left much to be desired. A few pros and cons below... PROS - Vegetarian BBQ option, which is rare! - Nice outdoor seating. - LGBTQIA+ friendly. CONS - Took awhile before anyone checked on us to get our orders. - Appetizers arrived well before drinks and we went awhile before water was replenished. - The frickles are a JOKE. For $8, you will receive approximately 10 fried pickle chips making nearly each fried pickle chip about a $1. While the frickles were good, they weren't THAT good. - Husband's mac and cheese with brisket had brisket that was mostly charred. Yum! (Couldn't address it since we were never checked up on except to have the check dropped off!) - Had to go get our own silverware after the entrees arrived. - The cocktails were meh and tasted a bit watered down. - 4% upcharge on food if you use a credit/debit card. Bring cash if you can. Overall, this place is fine if you're okay with waiting and have low expectations for service. There are limited options on the mountain, but this one wouldn't be at the top of the list of spots to eat at. read more

Super quirky decor, great drinks, great service, nice spot. Was staying nearby and looking for a place to drink that would be open late. Turns out it is open until 2am nightly, however, randomly closed on Tuesdays. It's right off of Highway 25, easy place to stop on your way back from the slopes. Didn't expect much from this Skyway just by outside appearances. Looks divey and dinery, but when you walk inside it looks like an antique garage, as the ceilings and walls are covered with the most bizarre trinkets. It truly is amusing just staring around the entire time you're there. I could see how kids could stay occupied here. So I sat at the small bar and ordered a local dark beer, a festivale, perfect for the season. I asked for a small snack recommendation and was told the frickles were a favorite, so I ordered them. The beer and the snack were both delicious. Love this spot. If you don't know what to order here, trust the staff for recommendations. The bartenders will also make up a drink for you, so trust in them, too. read more

This place is a crap shoot! Been here and had great food and a fun time but I guess that is only on certain days. Went today with friends who had never been there, and was told they were shortstaffed. The older Lady, who I presume to be the owner, sharing this information was frantic and rude. We were willing to wait understanding the times we are in with staffing. We went to the bar to order drinks and the bartender, who was standing there doing nothing, was friendly and shared drink menus after we asked if we could order. The owner comes around the corner and says we cannot order drinks because there are people waiting ahead of us and that she can't overwork her staff. I look at the bartender who shrugs. There was nobody ahead of us at the bar. Obviously an inexperienced owner with no customer service skills... can only imagine how she treats the employees who didn't show up to work today. We, along with three other groups, left because there are other restaurants in the area without this drama. I hate leaving a bad review for a local place but have a back up plan if you decide to try it. read more

Skyway...where even to begin?! I had driven by this place so many times to and from Hood, and was always all "yeah, I should try that place sometime"...and you probably have too. (Today, *I* am here to change all that.) I think a year or so passed and I still hadn't tried it. Then a friend told me the food there was "pretty good". I think pretty good is an understatement. This place has, by FAR, the best food between Portland and Mt Hood. The ambiance is also uncontested. Skyway has a funky, charming vibe that's like no other place in the greater Mt Hood eruption-zone. The menu almost has its own vocab (they are 'sandos' not sandwiches, mmk?) The outdoor seating area (when it's in season) is huge and feels like a small concert venue mixed with the coolest backyard you've ever been in. Some of the things that make Skyway great: "Magical mystery" BBQ sauce: this is one of your BBQ sauce options, what it is constantly changes, and they won't tell you what's in it...that would ruin the mystery bro. Speaking of BBQ who knew some of the best BBQ in Portland is actually in...Zig Zag?! It's seriously tasty stuff, and I'm from BBQ-country originally. And cheer-up vegans, they have BBQ tofu for you! The specials: you usually have to ask but they're usually really good...everything from pot roast to prime rib. Mac n' Cheese: yes, I know there are many people that despise the Portland trend of 'fancy' mac n' cheese (started by...Montage?), but I like it. The Mac here is really, really good. Happy Hour: two lil' sando's and mac n cheese for dirt cheap (I cannot remember the exact price, $4? $5?) HOW can you beat that? Answer: you cannot. Hot cocktails/specialty drinks: I'm a beer person (more on that later), I almost never drink any other form of alcohol. Having said that, I frequently get the drinks here. Last one I got had habanero vodka and hot cocoa. It was a really good choice and helped ease the post-mountain-chill I had going on. Beer: great selection of beers on tap and great happy hour on them, probably the best beer selection in the greater Mt Hood lahar-flow zone. This place is so good that even if it was in the heart of the Portland core, it would still be an incredibly note-worthy destination. But it's not, it's in the middle-of-nowhere, all unto itself, it's a refuge for climbers, skiers, and boarders...their throats dry from beer deprivation on the mountain all day. After our trek around Trillium Lake, we were all quite famished and on the way there I noticed the letter BBQ painted on the side of an eating establishment. Good thing I knew where to look. So we hit it up Skyway and we were glad to be there. A beautiful day, amazing patio where bands set up, a huge smoker, covered seating and plenty out in the sun and three very busy servers running about. For a Saturday afternoon, the outside was hopping. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausages and even some BBQ tofu on the menu along with wings, mac & cheese and lots and lots of sides. The cook was from Texas, so that's a good reason why the Texas BBQ was smelling so good. We got some frickles (fried dill pickles) and some cheesy and garlicy fries which were both perfect in their own way. As for eats, a couple of brisket sandwiches, one pulled pork sandwich with slaw and a kids mac & cheese. They had a mystery BBQ sauce option which was very peanutty in flavor. It was decent, but I'm sure either the chipotle or regular BBQ may have been better. The brisket was very tender and had mild seasonings on it. The meat and the smoke came through. I tried some of the slaw as well. A little on the sweet side. I liked it. The mac & cheese was very creamy and cheesy but needed a little salt to wake it up. Skyway is a destination place. Beer was reasonable, not many taps but a good mix of beer varieties. They also have several infused alcohols that they make as well including a vodka and a marionberry whiskey. The server staff was a bit rushed and ours was good but she forgot to order the mac & cheese for the kiddo, but the kiddo was patient. All went well. I arrived at 8:45 PM on a Saturday night to see my favorite local band (Amanda Richards and the Good Long Whiles), and the parking lot was full (literally). I managed to squeeze in right at the inlet to the lot. As a music venue, Skyway is excellent! There is a good stage, the PA sounds very good, and the music's not too loud. The seats are very comfortable, too, which is great for long shows. The service was also completely top-notch, all the way across the board. The hostess who greeted me at the door (who I suspect may actually be the owner), was incredibly friendly and helpful. She personally took me to the fireplace area to see if it would be to my liking (so I could be seated right away), or if I wanted to wait for something else to open up. I opted for the latter, and she literally had me seated right at the front to see the band in less than five minutes. Amazing, especially considering it was beyond a full house. I was also attended by two of their wait staff. The first was amazingly friendly, attentive, and recommended the macaroni and cheese based on this being my first visit. She also said she'd get the fries out for me right away as an appetizer (which she did). A waiter took over for her shortly thereafter, who was also just as attentive and personable. I never ran out of iced tea or water the whole night. The food was also brought out to me by two different kitchen staff as well. Very prompt, and very friendly. So far, so great! Great venue, shockingly great service. How was the food? The food is a complete hit-and-miss, bipolar affair. First, the great: The macaroni and cheese is truly outstanding. Brilliantly flavorful with perfectly-cooked pasta. It is super creamy, cheesy, and not even remotely gritty or greasy (freshly cooked, not microwaved..the chef TRULY excels at making such a velvety smooth sauce). It is among the best I've ever had. The crispy bread crumb topping adds such a huge touch, too! They offer a ton of add-ons (they call them "hook-ups") that you can have incorporated into the macaroni and cheese, or you can get them on the side. The prices for these are outstandingly inexpensive, too. I highly recommend the "bacon cubes". The hand-cut fries are a work of culinary art as well. You can tell they're hand-cut, and twice-fried, too. They're so deliciously flavorful, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Their portion size is almost comically large, and VERY cheap, too. The "small" (was huge) and cost all of $2. I'd make the long drive back just for the fries alone. The waiter recommended the marionberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. This was mind-blowingly good, and also appears to be individually cooked-to-order. The berries were the perfect texture and HUGELY flavorful. The cobbler topping was more of an ultra-crispy cookie than a crumble, and the ice cream pushed it right over the top. Again, I'd make the long drive back just for the cobbler. Now, the not-so-good: They tout their BBQ as "Northwest BBQ". If that's the case, "Northwest" must mean, "flavorless, fatty, and no smoke essence at all". I got their sampler, and was disappointed. The ribs were big and tender, but they tasted like they were steamed or braised, not smoked. The pulled pork and "brisket"(?) underneath the soggy slice of store-bought white bread were equally flavorless, and completely indistinguishable from each other. I honestly think I may have been served a double portion of pulled pork. There was a lot of fat in the mix (big chunks of fat), and the flavor was completely unremarkable. I'll definitely be going back, and honestly cannot wait for the next trip (music, macaroni and cheese, french fries, and marionberry cobbler). I'll try a burger (they looked really good) or some "wangs" (which I hope are chicken wings) instead of their BBQ, which I hope they eventually improve. read more

We came back the next day for brisket and it was also very good. I recommend the Chipoltle BBQ sauce as it gives it a bit of a kick. The Mac & Cheese is great too. Our party of 4 was staying very nearby in an AirBnB and walked over here after a very long day out hiking. we were seated, thankfully in the shade the hostess was great for this! One person in my party ordered us a round of shots, 2 beers, a drink, and a Pepsi. we looked over food. Meanwhile drink almost an entire pitcher of water. Temps are in the 80's today. We ordered another round of shots. We ordered our food. While we waited for our food went up to reorder a Pepsi and a beer and the bar told us they did not feel comfortable serving us anymore alcohol (this is surely their right). We were not loud, belligerent, or even driving! We quickly finished our food and got the F out of there as after they refused to further serve us they made us feel quite unwelcome there. My husband is a very calm accommodating 6'4" 265lb man who probably had the lowest BAC of us all and he has never been cut off on his life. this definitely felt like a very quick and at for them to make some money and kick us out so they could grab our table. read more

Had dinner on the outdoor patio last night. Tables are spaced far apart and the staff are vigilant about sanitation and other precautions. Other patrons were polite, kept their distance and everyone wore masks unless seated and eating/drinking. This is the first time we've eaten out in months and it was lovely. I wish I knew which playlist they're using because I loved it. Neither of us drink really, so I can't comment on booze. I had the burger which tasted great. It is totally ridiculous and amazing all at the same time... inside it is covered in old kitsch-ey stuff, and is all sort of set up like a maze/big old house converted into a restaurant, but thats all part of the charm! The drinks I have had here are usually good (though we typically stick to beer and wine). Where this place really shines is the FOOD! BBQ is really really good.. THE MAC AND CHEESE IS AWESOME! This place has really taken a turn for the worse. Now it seems like the owners treat the customers like a semi enemy. Wait staff is great but you get a sense of the underlying attitude from the bosses with the sarcastic signage, add on pricing, and menu changes. Agree with the reviewer who questioned using a bun for a pastrami sandwich, when rye (like they used to use) made it an awesome sandwich.
