SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS Slate Bistro and Bar 4415 E Village Parkway Gilbert, 85298 Companion and I drove 27 miles just to give this restaurant a try. It is located in a gated community on a golf course, but is open to the public. We had a reservation for 5 o'clock and were seated immediately. Our waitress Lauryn greeted us with a lovely smile and provided menus. Companion and I both had virgin margaritas, companions with cranberry and mine with strawberry. Both were excellent. While it was restaurant week, we both decided to order off the regular menu. Prices were very moderate for all items which was a surprise. I started off with a complimentary onion soup which while not authentic was a good try at the flavor and texture. It came with a cap of cheese properly melted over the top. Companion ordered the fish and chips which came with some excellent french fries and were cooked perfectly. For myself, I had the Walleye which was pan fried and which had a parmesan/potato covering that protects the fish from the heat and keeps it moist. The walleye was perfectly cooked and a delight to eat. Unfortunately, it came with brussel sprouts which while seasoned properly were undercooked to the point that I could not put a fork in it nor cut it with a knife. Dessert was interesting. Companion ordered affogato which is a ball of vanilla ice cream which then has a shot of espresso poured over it. The ice cream was good but the espresso seemed a bit harsh over it. For myself, I had the strawberry cheesecake gelato, and I found myself in dessert heaven. I've had many gelatos in my life and this one topped them all. Smooth, creamy, and loaded with flavor it was almost hypnotic to eat it. I found out that it is a creation of Villa Dolce Artisan Desserts which is a partner of Sysco Foods. The company produces this wonderful dessert in a 76000 square foot facility located in Glendale, AZ. If I can find a local place that sells the pints I will fill my freezer with it! Went to Slate for dinner and ordered the King Prime Rib....we were there 45 minutes into dinner service so the expectation was I should be able to get a medium rare cut at the minimum. I ordered it as rare as possible and even paid extra to add 5 more ounces. When it came out...it looked good but I noticed a salt glaze on the sides...as I cut into it...the cook was more medium well...and I suspect the glaze was to color the top. I am not one to waste as I love prime rib regardless...but definitely a disappointment in the food quality and accuracy. Will more than likely not eat there again and cannot recommend it. read more

I feel like this place should be way more busy especially during lunch time. It's a new go-to for family friendly lunches and dinners - also the best spot for a quick bite to eat before a round of golf or during the turn. Their menu is so versatile and they have so many yummy dishes to choose from. Including a seasonal menu. I've had the Wedge Salad, French Onion Soup (which could use a bit more broth, but still very flavorful), chicken piccata(my FAV!) and the Rueben sandwich. My husband always gets the French dip and says it's his favorite French dip from anywhere. The staff is so friendly and always so nice to our boys. The space is clean, inviting, comfy and it smells amazing in the front when you walk in! read more

We enjoyed checking this place out that is located inside the Trilogy Power Ranch. You have to let the guard know at the gate that you're coming for dinner. I had the daily fish dinner and Don had the prime rib. We both really enjoyed our meals. The big potatoes were delicious also. Our server was sweet and the views were nice. Won't be back! Service horrible and very slow for a Sunday night. Few other customers. Told waitress we had birthday girl. Had to ask if desert was comped for birthday. She had to ask manager.They comped it after that. Beer list is very weak! Maybe 6/8 beers which waitress had to tell us. Dinner for the price tasted like frozen. Entrees way over priced. 1st experience at Slate Bistro, the whole room was open and got sat in dark, back corner. Servers are sweet and nice but don't know what kind of bread is on our table or what is on tap. You can tell the side salads were made well ahead of time as the cucumber slices were dry on upside and no moisture on leaves or salad of any kind. I ordered the prime, and for me I love the edges, these were inedible, seasoned way too strong and salty, actually had to spit out. The Au Jus got me through the rest of the prime because the Au gratin potatoes tasted like absolutely nothing at all. My husband got the walleye which was about a "B" with only a few bones to pick out. I wanted this to be so good because we golf here and live close, it was not meant to be. Gave it a shot. read more

I frequent Slate fairly often. Usually the service and food is fine. On my last visit, it was a terrible experience. Not only was the service terrible, waiting 15-20 minutes for the server multiple times during the meal, I finally had to go and pay at the bar because the server never returned. Also, the meal was almost inedible. What made matters even worse, I made a complaint to management and never heard back!!! read more

We live in Power Ranch so this is close bike or drive across the street. Slate is a great place to grab breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu is small but has a wide variety of great items. For breakfast, do a Mimosa or one of their delicious bloody Mary's. Can't go wrong with their breakfast burritos. If you're going with the lunch or dinner menu you have great choices there too. We've had salads, burgers, the shrimp tacos were amazing! I also had the fish and chips again cooked to perfection. Looking for drinks, They have a wide variety of beers specialty cocktails and wine list. TJ is a server and bartender he will take good care of you from his pleasant demeanor and knowledge about the menu. read more

This is a completely average, forgettable place. Nothing wrong with it, nothing outstanding. It's located on a golf course; the customer base is older (40+), loud, and jolly. There are tables and a bar area, and it's a casual vibe. They have summer specials and happy hour. Had the caprese salad and the red and bleu salad. Both were quite overpriced for the small portion, overall just fine in taste. Got an unsweetened iced tea, solid and refreshing drink. Service was standard. Live music a bit too loud for my baby, but we dealt with it. read more

They use pre-made cubed Potatoes & over salt them with savory Salts & Sausage patties are salty too Pancakes pretty good otherwise why bother !!! They do Lunch & Dinner Good !!!! We experienced excellent service with very good food and beverages when visiting Slate Bistro.

Although we have eaten at Slate several times over the last few years, the service this time was very very slow, food was cold ,and undercooked. Overall a poor experience and do not plan to eat there again. We stopped here for breakfast on Saturday morning. They have a very nice outdoor seating area that overlooks the golf course and the interior of the restaurant is very nice too. Our service was very good. The breakfast was completely underwhelming however. I got the slate combo, which is two eggs, your choice of bacon sausage or ham and two pieces of toast. $9.79. that is a high-end price for the very mediocre breakfast they served me. No potatoes. Two pieces of bacon. And to add insult to injury, the bacon was burned to a crisp. We definitely will not be venturing back to this restaurant for dining at any time of the near future. read more

I ordered the seasonal lobster roll. My husband ordered the prime rib. Everything about the prime rib was perfect. My lobster roll was over salted to the point I could not eat it. I had 4-5 bites before giving up....I got really sick and we had to leave in a rush. Our evening plans were ruined as I was sick the entire night. We came here for ARW and $44 per couple and prime ribs was on the menu, scored! The food was excellent. They were very nice about substitute a different side for you. My uncle asked if he could get a side of fettuccine with Alfredo sauce- and the waitress said no problem. Great A bottle of house red wine was under $30 which we shared with 4 glasses. Nice My waitress- disappeared after she took our orders and dropped off the wine and appetizers. We wanted to add a beer so I had to flag someone else down. We dine at the Slate often. Tonight was the worst service we have ever had at any restaurant. Very few people, but yet we waited over an hour for our food. Total time was almost exactly 2 hours from being seated to leaving. Waitress needs to find a different vocation, serving isn't for her. Today we stopped at Slate Bistro. It was empty so we got all the attention from a trainee which was really nice. My husband ordered the Reuben and I order the pulled pork. Service was fast and the food was SO good and sandwiches were very generous. Oh and those fries are to die for!! My pulled pork was served with Cole slaw on top of the pulled pork but I asked for it on the side. Also both sandwiches are served with great pickles as well. Looking at homes in Trilogy, so we ended up having lunch here recommended by a realtor. Food: We all really enjoyed our meal, however my wife's pull pork sandwich was a little dry. I really enjoyed my cuban sandwich, and our realtor(close friend) enjoyed his reuben sandwich. We all had fries as our sides, their fries is the battered type, not my favorite but doable. Our issue wasn't the food, I recommend you come here for the food. We did have issues with the service at first. When we walked in, it was seat your self. We decided to eat outside. After about five minutes I had to go inside and ask for menu's. Then after about another five minutes I had to go inside to ask if anyone is going to recognize us and get out drink orders. When I went back to our table, we had to wait for another few minutes. I was getting ready to to back inside and go off on someone, However a young lady went to our table and took our drink and food order. I have ordered from Slate a few times now. What on earth do they do for their shrimp cocktail to be superb compared to others? The last order I placed contained 3, yes, 3, orders of their shrimp cocktail. It's one of the few places around (for delivery) that have it on the menu. $11 huge shrimpos, charred lemon and house cocktail sauce. Incredible! I eat the leftover cocktail sauce. Go on, feel free to judge me but it's that good. The burchetta surprised me when it arrived because I was expecting the bread slices similar to other places with mix and match bruchetta boards. Slate has what would be bite size bruchetta for me, sliced in half so they're nibble sized, for me.... again, go ahead and judge me. It was delicious but I certainly wanted more. I'm likely to skip next time just due to the cost vs the portion. I've also had their Kale salad. I have to admit, it was more kale than anything else and for me, it almost tasted as though the quinoa wasn't properly toasted off to get rid of that fast quinoa has when it's hit boiled. Not my favorite although the kale was fresh it just didn't do it for me. I would live on the shrimp cocktail though and I know it's a weird item to go on and on about. I'd like to give their dinner menu a try only I keep finding myself ordering around lunch time before dinner is offered. Next? That lobster risotto. We have only tried their food via DoorDash but the food was very good. The salads are a nice porportions. Our favorite is the blue cheese cobb salad. SO unbelievably yummy. I think their blue cheese is made in house. read more

It's my first time trying this place and I did it through door dash. Let me say this review in no way reflects on my dasher. He was fast and courteous and kept me up to date. I order the chicken Cordon Bleu, chicken tenders with fries, and mini dessert sample. For the chicken Cordon Bleu I had mashed potatoes and asparagus for my sides. That asparagus were good. The actual chicken Cordon Bleu itself was very thin and not a lot of filling. I'm used to a nice big round piece with a good amount of filling this one seems like it was frozen and then fried/cooked. I also found a white hair in my garlic mashed potatoes. For the chicken tenders and fries I have to say they were both good in taste but they give you two chicken tenders that are very thin and fries. Not worth the money in my opinion. For the mini desserts sample I have to say it literally means mini desert temple. These are the smallest samplings of anything I have ever ordered and I would never order this again for five dollars. read more

I made a reservation at Slate for Father's Day, so my husband, son and myself dined together. It wasn't very crowded and we probably didn't even need a reservation. As the evening wore on, I figured out why. While the service was good, attentive without being overbearing, the food left me disappointed. The dinner salads were fresh and enjoyable and the pretzel bites appetizer was a good portion for the price. I have to say that my husband did enjoy his prime rib, as it was cooked to his liking, but my son's fettucine Alfredo had very little flavor to it. I decided on the pan fried walleye for my meal - being from the midwest, it's an old favorite, so I was excited to have it. The fish itself was cooked well, but had no seasoning on it at all. Adding some salt and lemon juice helped. My biggest problem with it was how many bones I kept finding in the fish as I ate! It was difficult to enjoy it when I had to worry about choking on a fish bone. I made a comment about it to the waitress, who proceeded to tell me, "yes, that's the risk you take when ordering fish." Wow. In a restaurant it's the job of the kitchen staff to check the fish portions for bones before cooking and serving them. I could understand if one or two bones were missed, but I had 12 on my plate at the end of the meal. I swapped my potato side for the risotto and this was also a miss as were the severly undercooked brussels sprouts. Not sure if we'll give this place a 2nd chance, or not. read more

We tried this place because it is close to our new house. This review is for only our first visit, but there will be more. First: Busy. We sat at a small tall table because that's what was available (we had placed no reservation). Second: they can run out of Prime Rib early, 7:00 in our case. We enjoyed the wine, dinners and desserts, but most especially the service. We will be back. Yes, the service pace was leisurely, but friendly and attentive.
