Every once in awhile, one has a restaurant experience that goes above and beyond all expectations. And that is exactly what happened this evening at Slate Street Cafe. For this, I wish I could give them an extra star. Right now, I am on an insanely impossible diet, requiring that I not eat certain things, such as tomatoes, citrus, the most basic of spices, including mint, chocolate and other such nonsense. There's a chance this diet is temporary, so it's probably good if I actually stick to it with more care than not. And because of it, I've been essentially eating at home. I wasn't expecting to come to Slate Street and have major modifications made on my behalf, especially on a busy Friday night. But our waitress was receptive. She wanted to know what I was able to have and what needed to be avoided. In the end, it turned out there might not be anything on the menu that wasn't at least partially prepared ahead of time, such as their tuna steaks, which had been marinating for hours or their mashed potatoes, which are prepared with white pepper. The chef gave the waitress some options to offer up, which felt like they were giving me carte blanche to order whatever I wanted, coupled with a reasonable amount of wait time for it to be prepared. I ended up ordering a burger and fries, a dish that turns out to be on their menu, though I hadn't seen it at the time. It was perfect, and the chef brought our meals to the table to make sure we were satisfied with everything. If you don't have to modify your meal so dramatically, Slate Street's entire offerings are creative and delectable. Anything from homemade hummus to bruschetta with eight different toppings to chose from to maple dijon glazed salmon or tequila lime chicken, there dishes are made fresh and to perfection. Their desserts are worth giving up your basic diet for the day, or night. Slate Street will cater to those needing dishes to be gluten free or vegetarian. Just ask. They are very receptive in helping to make your dining experience as wonderful as possible. And in this day when it seems many have various food sensitivities, that is a very important trait for a restaurant to have. I applaud their efforts. read more

Slate street is a local restaurant whose claim to fame is their magnificent wine loft and their farm to table signature promise. Our hopes were high and our stomachs growling when we came this morning for breakfast. We were seated right away and able to park in the lot right outside of the restaurant. They have a variety of coffee and tea options, as well as mimosas! I ordered the green egg and ham omelette with cheesy hash browns. How can you not order the green eggs and ham?! I asked for my hash browns to be extra crispy, because I like an added crunch. When they brought out my order, they brought me an extra cooked omelette and regular hash browns. When I told them the mix up, they fixed it right away. The overall atmosphere is chill and sophisticated. They have some really impressive finishes around the restaurant, like their awesome chandeliers. This is a fun local spot near downtown. I would like to check out the wine loft next time. read more

Service was good, but my food was overpriced and not very good. I got the soup of the day (a tomato corn chowder) and a grilled cheese (cheddar with apricot chutney). The soup was cold so I asked for it to be replaced and the replacement was better but not much, definitely not hot. The grilled cheese was good but nothing to write home about, and not very warm either. A hot herbal tea was 4.50 and a small latte was 5 which seems a little expensive but not terrible. Outside seating and parking was nice, and the ambiance was bright and airy inside. I don't think I'll be back. read more

My husband and I dined at Slate Street Cafe for breakfast. We both got an omelet which were very tasty and fresh with ample portions. The server was very friendly and attentive to us. It was our first trip to New Mexico and he reminded us to drink plenty of water because of the altitude. The atmosphere was clean and inviting, nice music playing in the background. We opted to eat inside but the patio looked nice too as the weather was very pleasant. Great spot and highly recommend! read more

Came here for our 1st breakfast experience in ABQ... and sadly, I didn't really like it. Ambiance: it was bright and sunny inside... tables and chairs reminded me of a cafeteria style... Server: she was friendly but she didn't really quite get the S.O.'s and BFF's BF sense of humor... became kinda awkward in some moments. Food: Didn't really try anybody's food but here's what I ordered: - Soy Mocha: it was in a generic white cup... felt cheated b/c I probably got charged more but the portion was nonexistent! - housemade banana bread = didn't really taste the banana much... adding butter helped with adding flavor to it. - fried egg sandwich (fried eggs, white cheddar, Applewood smoked bacon on a toasted ciabatta white cheddar hash browns) = the plate came and it was oozing oil. Eck! First bite: oil was dripping into my hands... eww. The sandwich itself was bland... I told myself to eat at least half of the sandwich... even then my stomach was telling me this: WTF?! - Fresh fruit cup = I tried to eat as much of this as I could to help balance the oil galore in my taste buds. - Mexican style oatmeal (BFF) ordered this it and it was swimming it butter. Well...America, I REALLY wanted to love this place...I was REALLY looking forward to coming here today, having a nice leisurely lunch, especially after reading up on all the reviews...but, unfortunately I just don't have a very positive review myself to report. Ok, so I just backspaced 4 paragraphs...I've decided to delete the "bitch-fest" Every restaurant has a bad day...or two...or 11 - no big deal, seriously. Came here while on the hut looking for a breakfast spot that was open. I was in Albuquerque for the day as I had an early departure home. They were not open for dine in so I had to ordered food to go. I went inside thinking I could order in side, but I literally saw no one. Not even a host. I tried to call in an order and no one answered, so I ended up putting in an order online, and called shortly after and told them I was outside whenever they were finished. Ended up getting the french toast and the country fresh eggs. I was so hungry, I literally sat in the parking lot and ate. The food was delicious and is definitely recommended. We visited over the holidays and we had such a wonderful experience. The service was top notch! I had the steak and eggs with a side of red chili, the steak was cooked to perfection. Other guests had the Huevos rancheros and veggie omelette and both recieved high praises!! We went on a week day so it was nice, cozy and quiet - I can imagine it being packed and noisy during the weekend tho. Will definitely visit again! read more

An Albuquerque friend who's a veteran of the city's restaurant and catering scene recommended Slate St a couple years ago. I often have lunch here, when I'm in town. Breakfast items are available through lunch. (I haven't had dinner.) My five-star rating is for an informal cafe that knows what it's doing, not for fine dining. The menu is mostly a modern (though reassuringly recognizable) take on comfort foods, prepared by a talented "steady hand," in the kitchen. I had no idea that something as mundane as a fried egg sandwich could be so delicious. Service staff are friendly and efficient. The clientele is noticeably mixed: downtown government and office workers, retirees, and some millennials. The cafe has kind of a Mid-century Modern vibe, and it's close downtown and to museums and Old Town. read more

Service was absolutely the worst I've ever had. SLOW SLOW SLOW App: House potato chips were good. Ordered the vegetable salad, but it was a complete disappointment. I asked the served if the veggies were cooked, then chilled and her response was, "some, but not all." So, my fault for ordering it since there was no confidence in her answer. Turns out, it was awful... I sent it back. Presentation was good, but just a bunch of raw veggies lightly tossed in a meh dressing. Won't give it another shot. read more

We came here on a Sunday to sit out on the patio and enjoy the last few days of amazing weather. Their bottle of champagne with a mixer was a nice start to our meal of queso and chips, broccoli Mac and cheese and veggie burgers! The queso and Mac and cheese were just... wow... so good. Absolutely recommend for a cheat meal. The champs was a little over priced for the quality $30 for the bottle... but I'm used to bottomless champagne brunches that come complimentary with the meal so take that with a grain of salt. This place would have received 5 stars but half way through the meal the most horrible sewer smell hit the whole patio and we all were rushing to get our checks and bounce. Apparently it happens "about once a month" but it was so bad even our masks couldn't mask the smell... you guys definitely need to get your exterior sewer line checked out. read more

First, the food allergy review: The menu at Slate Street has multiple gluten free or can be gluten free options, which is nice! We went for brunch on a Monday and it was a quiet and relaxed environment, and since I was catching up with family I rarely see it was the perfect environment. Our waiter was knowledgeable about celiac disease and food prep and said he can't guarantee against cross contamination but that they would do their best. I told him I would be using my Nima Gluten Sensor to check the food and he wasn't worried about food coming up as glutened! I ordered sunny side up eggs, applewood smoked bacon, and cheesy hash browns. My food tested gluten free and I got that happy face of approval from my Nima! So awesome!! On top of that everything tasted great. My Aunt agreed and said her omelette was very tasty. So as far as food goes, I say Slate was awesome! Would go again! Now for the non food related review...our waiter. I feel bad because we suspect he had a cold (sneezing, runny nose) but we felt a little uncomfortable with someone who seemed under the weather serving our food. He was all around kind and knowledgeable, but it was a bit much for us. So overall I have to give Slate Street Cafe 3 stars: 3 for the gluten free tasty food, minus 2 because we were both put off by the thought that we may get sick. read more

The huevos rancheros are pretty good, and their cupcakes are a nice treat after the main course. Parking is a little spare because it is in an older part of town. Sitting in the back room by the kitchen can be a little distracting, but the restaurant has a nice vibe. Our server was good, but they were really busy so we had more empty glasses than we would have had if they had been slower. No complaints, and I would return. read more

Have been here for dinner but really pleased with their lunch! I had the BLT with the fried green tomatoes! Great touch! And what is with the bacon? It was the most flavorful bacon I have had! So it's almost daring me to come back over and over again in a bid to "collect them all." Today I had blueberry lime and I was not disappointed. We stopped over, in Albuquerque, and did Hotel Tonight, at the Double Tree. We could have had dinner, at the hotel, but we Yelped what was nearby, and Slate Street Cafe was not only within walking distance, but they had a wine tasting! We did a reservation, online, incase they might be busy, and walked over. We were given the choice of sitting downstairs (in the restaurant), or going upstairs (bar area). We decided, to go upstairs. We sat, at the bar, and were a little worried, because the wait staff behind the bar disappeared, when we sat down, but that all changed, when we were waited on and said that we wanted to do the wine tasting. Christene became our server and she was wonderful. I loved her descriptions, of the wines. It was a Sauvignon Blanc Wine tasting and I am a red wine drinker, but this was a great wine tasting, with a Tuna appetizer included. We also chose the Salmon Rice Bowl, which was pretty incredible, and went very well, with all the wine. I would love to live near this restaurant and try all their wine tastings and specials. read more

I went to Slate Street for lunch today after hearing great reviews from friends. It was underwhelming. I ordered the green chile con queso and it was like a block of velvetta... not the gooey queso I was expecting. I also ordered the green chili chicken sandwich as the waitress said it was one of their most popular dishes - it was awful. It was bland and the breading on the chicken was not great at all. Our service was wonderful and the staff was great, and it's such a cute place - but there are much better places in ABQ for breakfast and lunch. read more

Great little find in the downtown area. The atmosphere is nice, there is a loft wine area. My wife and went she loved the steak and I had the chicken, omg cooked perfectly. I've been here twice now and am planning to go back in a couple weeks. The first time I went it was the weekend and it was very busy so prepare for that. The staff was still friendly and we didn't wait more than 15mins for our party of 5. The apple fritters they make on the weekend are a must have. Both their coffee and mimosas are good and I love the hash browns they serve with most of their breakfast options. I can't say anything about the dinner/wine tasting experience they offer as I haven't been but I would like to go when I have the opportunity. I think it is reasonably priced for the quality of food. If you are looking for something quieter try a weekday. The second time I went, was a Thursday midmorning and it was quiet. We will be back!!! Visited this place with my girlfriend and it was very lovely. We sat in the wine room up on the loft and really enjoyed ourselves. The house wine was surprisingly good, very good. We went for happy hour which I highly suggest. Absolutely incredible. The fritters are the best pastry I've found in Albuquerque- huge chunks of apples with dense moist cake like bread. The London fog was perfect and adorably presented. My partner thoroughly enjoyed the sausage sliders w a delicious accompanying sauce. The hash browns were moist and flavorful. What I appreciate most is the attention to detail in the green chili stew - it was not just leftover dark meet- best stew I've found yet! Our server was kind, quick, and attentive. Food was fine, nothing bad, nothing to write home about. The server was great. The issue is that a party of 6 (2 adults and 4kids) were put at a table for 4. While other tables were open. We quickly realized that the other table in the back section where we were seated also had a child. And so despite not really fitting at the table, we were shoved in the back at a too small table because of our kids. A server who was not ours asked how our meal was, we told him we were squished. He said nothing and walked away and that was that. So the bottom line is: Ok food, decent service. Don't come if you have kids. Be prepared to be shoved in the back at a table that's too small. Manager chided us when we called to let him know about the issues. Told that we should have eaten outside. We weren't offered the option to eat outside otherwise we would have done that. Told us if we didn't like the table the wait would have been 30 minutes- again no one gave us that information. Honestly just skip this place if you have kids. read more

Breakfast can be so amazing. It's the first meal of the day, and it sets the whole day off. Today, we wanted to eat somewhere else but they were closed (unbeknownst to us) for remodeling. We searched good ol Yelp for something nearby because we were starving, and found Slate Street. There wasn't a soul in the place eating when we got there. Weird, but good for us. We were seated right away, and our orders were taken very quickly. I ordered the country eggs with bacon, and toast. They have several bread options, which is nice. The hashbrowns were crispy, and had white cheddar on them. Despite that, they were pretty bland. I ordered my eggs scrambled, and they were fine. The best part of my breakfast was the bacon- it was crispy and had a delicious maple flavor. All in all, it was just fine. Not the best meal I have ever had, but not the worst. I can't say I would go out of my way to eat breakfast here again as the menu is pretty small and the food wasn't anything special. read more

Right behind the court house downtown, Slate Street Cafe is bigger on the inside than it looks from outside. Parking maybe difficult when it's busy for brunch and you may need to park around the corner. My partner and I are doing a month of vegetarian eating and got the Bruchetta and Dutch Oven pancake as our main meal. I like that there were many choices for the bruchetta. The pancake wasn't too sweet and had a good bread to fruit ratio. We started our late brunch with the green chile and cheese biscuits. Those biscuits tasted warm, moist and crunchy, and doesn't have the dried out or burnt edges that always happened with my own. We also had mimosas and coffee. I love that with the open space and high ceilings, they have those panels that don't make the place get too loud when packed. read more
