Visited S'MAC for the first time this evening because my wife has been wanting to try their mac and cheese and because we had time to kill before our movie. She ordered the Alpine in the nosh size (smallest size). My wife rated the mac and cheese a 4/5 while I would've rated it a 3/5. She said it was delicious and the slab bacon was her favorite part. She would come back. Here is why I would rate it a 3/5 - I'm not a Mac and cheese guy. The only mac and cheese that has ever brought me joy were ones from Noodles and Company. I'm confident S'MAC has better mac and cheese but hey, I like what I like. Although the Alpine mac and cheese from S'MAC didn't bring me joy, it certainly brought joy to my wife who is a mac and cheese person. So if you're like her, check it out! If you're like me, ehh the decision is yours. 4/5 Yelp stars. My wife will return on her own LOL. read more

I can't wait to come back!!! Fortunately I visited around lunch time and it wasn't very crowded or crazy as the reviews suggest. I actually enjoyed the kiosk ordering, made it way easier but again with a bigger crowds and busier times I do think they should have more staff. Aside from all that, the food is sooooo delicious! It's just basic mac and cheese dressed up!! I had the Neapoletana (Pizza flavor) Mac n' Cheese which was heavenly! In retrospect I should've sat down there and eaten, it was a perfectly cold day outside and I was insanely hungry so somewhere between those conditions this meal was incredible. The small size is Nosh, then Major Munch, then Mongo, and largest is Partay. Ofcourse, there are many other vegetarian options to try so I will certainly visit again. I would also recommend coming w/ a crew so you can enjoy their sampler skillet with multiple types of mac' n Cheese read more

S'MAC has an absolutely myriad of Mac N Cheese possibilities, it's kind of bonkers. You order at a kiosk which is nice because again, the possibilities!!! I loved the variety in Mac n cheese flavor profiles and cultural fusions. I ended up getting the buffalo Mac n cheese to go. It was super delicious and had all of the things I'm looking for in a Mac n cheese - elbow macaroni (bc duh), a golden, crispy outer layer, and of course, extra cheesy factor. Def hit all the marks there. It may have been a bit too salty for me but that's also because it was buffalo flavored. Still very enjoyable. Docking a star because my friend got the vegan version of the regular Mac n cheese and it tasted sweet in a weird way, meaning that it was likely made with coconut milk (which makes sense because its cheaper than cashew milk for instance) and didn't quite have the Mac-n-cheese taste. They have some seating inside and outside but it's fairly small overall. I'd definitely come back and try more of their stuff! read more

Came to S'MAC with a friend for lunch. It was super spacious with plenty of seating and with COVID, everything was contactless which was nice. There are so many varieties of Mac that it was hard to choose but I ordered the Mediterranean and my friend did a build your own. The food came out quickly and it was SO GOOD!! Super cheesy and all the toppings were delicious. My friend has severe allergies, so S'MAC was a great option for her as they have gluten-free options and allowed her to build her own mac! I also love the community fridge initiative they have. So delicious and allergen-friendly, would definitely go again. read more

I had a small masala mac and cheese. I appreciate the blend of western and Indian flavors - seriously creamy with a bit of a spicy kick. It's usually pretty busy, so be prepared to wait a little. The seating is mostly outdoors or halfway outdoors with a few tables inside. read more

I'm a big mac n' cheese lover! I saw their food advertised on a social media account so I had to add it to my list when I was visiting NYC. The portion size is really good and the flavor is great! i came to s'mac on a saturday around 12pm (i think they had just opened?) with a friend who has celiac's disease, so it was GREAT that there is a gluten-free option for the mac & cheese! they have you order from these self-service kiosks now, but they provide you with plastic gloves so you don't have to actually touch the screen, which was thoughtful. there is a dining area that's separated from the kisoks by those thick hanging plastic things. there's free water as well. we ordered (1) nosh size tikka masala mac (gluten-free and (2) nosh size mediterranean mac without the olives. it's nice that the kiosks make it so easy to customize the dish as much as you want, and they show you additional costs for anything as well. i thought the mac dishes were just okay, definitely novelty, and not something i would eat every day. however it was neat to try once! read more

Okay hear me out, the restaurant isn't the prettiest but just give it a chance. We just stopped by and ordered a couple major sized napolatana Mac and cheeses. We dined in and our food came out quickly and was delicious! I would definitely come back to try all the different options. Notes: - it's a "place your own order" kind of deal with a computer in the front of the shop. Look up, the full menu is on the wall but not on the computer. - there aren't much drink options - they have a vegan option!! read more

I was not a fan of the Mac and cheese here at this place. First the location felt like a hut and was very dim. Next, I ordered a four cheese skillet and it just tasted very bland. I only ate a couple of bites and then decided to toss out the rest. I was very disappointed as I'm a huge Mac and cheese lover and was hoping this place would be good. read more

amazing mac and cheese for a reasonable price! the only thing i disliked about my order was that the bacon was too thick and a bit burnt (too hard to bite) (also salty). i ate around it, but the rest was so good (my friend's was also so good) that i am keeping this at 4 stars. i will try something else next time to avoid the bacon but will definitely be back. it is all self serve but the place could definitely clean between customers better. worth it for the food! read more

This is my go-to restaurant when in the area. Because they specialize in Mac and cheese, it's always so satisfying. The Mac and cheese has the perfect stringy texture and creamy sauce. The breadcrumbs add a nice touch. There's lots of different size options so you can have a small meal or really do it up. My partner and I shared the nosh size and left full, but it might not be enough if on an empty stomach. The people are really nice as well. It's self-serve for the most part but when they bring you the food they're always friendly. The place itself is cool, has lots of seating, and is never too busy. There's outdoor and indoor seating. This place was great! I am a Mac n cheese fan so it was a must for my NYC trip. We did do a takeout order after a long day out. We ordered three different dishes and sampled each one. Our favorite was the four cheese; fairly basic, but so good. We also liked the buffalo chicken. The Parisienne was definitely the most unique, but it was good too! The portions are generous. I eat at smac probably 3 times a month, so I consider myself a bit of an expert. My current flavor ranking of the ones I've tried thus far: 1. Mediterranean 2. Cajun 3. Buffalo 4. Neapolitan 5. 4 cheese 6. Alpine (extra breadcrumbs) 7. all American Don't order extra breadcrumbs unless you like the taste of sand. While all of them could benefit from a little salt and pepper, the top 3 are really amazing, with tons of flavor in every bite. Alpine would have been better without the breadcrumbs. also, the major munch is an absolute ton of food for the price. Definitely worth it, most people will have leftovers. read more

How has it taken me this long to stop by S'mac?!?! Their Nosh size is huge and is less than $10. I got the 4 Cheese. The cheeses are high grade and it is baked so the top is nice and crispy. I opted for breadcrumbs (but you can opt not to add them). Great comfort food. The dish is well thought out - the macaroni elbows are even ridged. Can't wait to try the other options. read more

Omg the mac & cheese is off the chain 4 stars but they have a serious in house order priority major issue going on here ...... We arrived at 8:05 pm 2/14/19 the place was moderately busy to getting ready to be slammed .... We were a party of four, we sat & my wife made the order took maybe 10 minutes or so using their self serve order system .... ( honestly we don't care for that we rather have a human take our order especially when it's your 1st time eating at the place honesty my wife had no one to ask any questions to ...... one guy taking the money & running the orders to the table.) The problem; you place your order and wait they give you a number to put on your table; What I witnessed was that for over 45 minutes none of the tables orders were coming out however their delivery guys were flying in & out constantly; they were taking care of their deliveries over taking care of the house the customers staring at you directly in your face..... I've never seen that before it's unheard of !!! So from ordering at 8:05 pm we finally got our plates @ 9:10 pm ..... I actually called from my table to ask him where's table # 23's order ??? He was like let me check ... came over to tell me another 15 minutes or so ... omg really ??? We heard the cook slamming pots & pans yelling asking for help so clearly they are under staffed !! Also a particular delivery guy..... a black gentleman wearing a red helmet & has mint electric bike stood out to me .... this guy thinks or maybe owns part of S'MAC because he cuts off all the other delivery guys and yells at the cook telling him where's my orders !!! And behold this guy gets his orders; we watched him come & go at least 5 times with a about 2 to 6 orders per run .... HONESTLY THIS DELIVERY GUY MUST BE HITTING OFF THE COOK WITH A LIL MONEY AT THE END OF THE NIGHT !!! You need to fix that because me & a few other tables both observed the same thing .... THIS KILLED OUR OVERALL EXPERIENCE WITH RESTAURANT........ it's a damm shame when the owners stop caring and keeping a thump on their business ..... I probably would not return & couldn't recommend this place to my friends & family and fellow yelpers .. Sorry S'MAC that you had to get smacked .......... I don't like giving negative reviews but this one you forced me ..... your Worker's seem to be from the walking dead & with no personalities what so ever !!! Also I was speaking to a customer who told me that he worked for you guys so he says & that this is the normal here & that the best times to come is like 11:am ish or after 2:pm ish .... I was like yea I will adjust my schedule for S'MAC !?&@!! We came all the from Brooklyn to try this joint ...... Big let down ..... We ordered two cheese burger Mac's & two Alpine Mac's both dishes were very good I will not discredit their food ..... the service is just awful..... I got a gift card here for my birthday, so many options including a build your own. Got the buffalo chicken one as well. Buffalo Chicken was by far my favorite and does great as leftovers. Bathroom inside is clean, you order on a tablet and find yourself a seat, good for a quick bite. Went with a few friends and had no problem finding a seat! Staff is friendly and quick. Also great drink selection if you like stewart's soda! read more

This is my go to Mac and Cheese spot for whenever I want it. They have a pretty decent selection of different types and there is a sampling plate you can order, but the Alpine is the one I recommend. This place is what I compare other Mac and Cheese places in the city to. The staff can be a little spotty at times like but it's mainly been a takeout place been covid anyway. read more

Was craving mac and cheese and my boyfriend suggested we check this place out since they got good reviews for their vegan mac and cheese. So we stopped by and the reviews didn't disappoint, that mac and cheese was soooo good. Got the mongo to share with vegan cheese and shiitake mushroom. The dish was serve in cast iron skillet (which came in different sizes depending on how hungry you are). I really liked the crunchy breadcrumbs on top, next time I'll order extra. I've tried other vegan mac and cheese from different places and this place probably my new favorite place. It was cheesy, creamy, gooey, and oh so very delicious. read more

I love Mac' and Cheese, so naturally I would love S'Mac... Soooo many options, so how do you choose which 1 to try? For your first visit, you don't. You choose the sampler which ended up being a great decision. Some varieties I liked more than others, 1 I thought I would like but didn't, was surprised by 1, and another, I would not order again. My Least Favorite was the 1. Cheeseburger, a safe somewhat boring choice and 2. Parisienne, which I thought I would love butt the flavor a a little too earthy Somewhere In the middle fell 1.the Cajun, which all I could taste was sausage but lacked a little heat, and 2. Four Cheese, which was actually the perfect blend for a traditional a Mac n cheese but it just didn't shine compared to the others My top 3 faves were 1. the Alpine, which had a strong cheese(assuming Swiss) with a great meaty surprise, 2. La Mancha, well seasoned but hard to describe, and 3. Napoletana, American Mexican flavor inspired Next time I'll order one of my faves plus try 1 of the varieties that didn't come on the sampler. S'MAC can definitely smack, but I felt there were a few spots where they lack as well. The ambience is pleasant to say the least: open space, lots of natural light, and an amazing music selection. I could never say no to some Michael Jackson. My party ordered the sampler and the Buffalo mac & cheese. The sampler was an interesting roller coaster to say the least. Lots of ups and downs, but I managed to find a few favorites. I'm a big fan of the Napoletena and I'd have to say this was my favorite out of the group. Imagine eating an authentic Italian slice of pizza equipped with the iconic sliced tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella but without being limited by the crust. I got to enjoy the Italian vision in all of its cheesy glory. My other favorites were the cheeseburger mac and four cheese mac. The beef was tender and flavorful and the blend of cheeses created a captivating taste, which especially works for people who like to keep their Mac and cheese simple. The rest of the portions were decent: they weren't bad by any means but they didn't necessarily grab my attention. I can say that the Alpine resembles a Haitian baked macaroni for those who are familiar with the taste, but even at that it was fairly neutral. The Parisienne honestly threw me off a bit: I'm usually a mushroom mafia ambassador, but these mushrooms had a strong oily undertone and a bit of an aftertaste that made it difficult to savor the rest of the macaroni. The Buffalo Mac and cheese was, by far, the best macaroni I tried. The cheese, as was the case with other mac dishes, was plentiful and sharp. They worked especially well with the generous cuts of chicken and the saltiness of the Buffalo sauce. This chicken was also very tender and you generally get a huge texture experience with this dish. If you're stuck for an option among the many choices here, the Buffalo mac will definitely not fail you. If you're a madman for mac and cheese, you might find a beloved meal here as long as you grab one of their stronger dishes. Personally, I'd play it safe with some more familiar looking ingredients before deciding to venture on to the more exotic options. read more

Okay!! This place has been on food list for so so so many years. Growing up and watching tv ads for this to finally trying it in 2020 was a dream come true. I kid you not, this was 100% worth the wait. If you're visiting New York, have heard of this place, you MUST visit. An Indian twist to mac and cheese is my heaven. I love Mac and cheese and came here before a few years ago but couldn't remember why I never went back. Spoiler alert: It's because the food isn't good. It definitely LOOKS good and SMELLS good, but it doesn't taste good. I got the sampler set they offer which I think is a great way to try all the flavors. I don't eat pork so they scraped off two of the flavors. All their Mac and cheese is frozen and not freshly made, so they couldn't make me a custom order. I think that kind of sucked because I still had to pay full price for it. The sampler wasn't worth it because all the Mac and cheese tasted the same. The PARISIENNE one stood out to me because of the sweetness from the figs. The NAPOLETANA was ok but it didn't taste tomato and basily. The 4 CHEESE might as well have been one cheese. I think the biggest issue with the Mac and cheese was the texture. It was all very soupy, more like a wet cheese sauce rather than a gooey Mac and cheese. This was very noticeable in the MASALA Mac and cheese. You can see from the picture that it didn't have much crispiness. It was filled with undercooked onions which I didn't understand. Also the only thing masala about it was that they used some spices unlike the other under seasoned options. It felt like the spices were added without any purpose because they didn't blend well together at all. We also got a small of the basic American Mac and cheese. This one was the best because the texture was better. Still there was nothing special about it. It's a Mac and cheese most restaurants would probably serve as a side dish to their main entree. I would recommend the Gully's Mac and cheese if you're looking for Indian inspired food. read more

Came here with my friend on a super cold and rainy day and we were dying for some warm comfort food like mac n cheese. My friend ended up ordering the buffalo chicken s'mac while I tried the Parisienne, a flavor combination of brie, figs, and shiitake mushrooms. While I love all of these ingredients separately (and ok, figs and brie are basically inseparable), I was a little hesitant to try them all together in mac n cheese. They definitely don't skimp on the figs at this place and the combination was a big jarring at first (the mac n cheese was a little sweeter than I expected), but ultimately it grew on me. I've always been a fan of s'mac's breadcrumb topping and their pasta is probably the only gf pasta I've ever had that tastes like regular pasta. We had a really enjoyable dinner. Just a heads up, this restaurant gets pretty crowded on the weekends, even for a dinner time as early as a little before 5 pm. When we walked in, there were only 2 tables for 2 left. read more

I've been wanting to come here for so long and finally got the chance last night! The signs said there would be a 25 minute wait for food but it felt like almost no time at all. I've been coming here for years. It's one of those places that does one dish but does it WELL. They let you build your own mac and cheese, which is so much fun. What's especially cool is they have a lactose-reduced (NOT lactose free) option, and I think it does actually make a difference! I wasn't as gurgly. I got the custom Nosh-sized Cheddar/Mozz with chicken and mushrooms. Always, always get the extra breadcrumbs. It doesn't cost extra for more! My only recommendation is to finish it at the restaurant if you can. Unfortunately, the mac and cheese doesn't do well as leftovers. The container they use for leftovers is paper-based, which doesn't do well when your food product is cheese. When I got home, the cheese had obviously melted, and when I tried removing it from the container, it tore the container, meaning there was paper in the food. Additionally, I love flavor, but there was so much rosemary in the mac and cheese haha. I didn't notice it when I initially ate it, but when I reheat it, the herbs were so overpowering that it legit tasted like a candle. Perhaps I overheated it? read more

S'MAC opened its doors in 2006 and was the first ever restaurant to be devoted exclusively to mac & cheese. The idea behind S'MAC was to elevate macaroni & cheese from a perennial side dish to the status of a meal in and of itself. When we first conceived of the idea, we believed that it could grow into something much larger than a single restaurant. Little did we know that upon opening our doors, we would be transformed from an unknown, small, edgy East Village restaurant to a high-traffic, high-volume restaurant with a cult following.

The mapo tofu, green beans, twice cooked pork, and spicy (lazi) chicken were very flavorful. I thought the mala levels were just right, but it may be on a bit on the lighter side compared to authentic. The lamb spine came in a delicious broth, but it was a bit hard eating the lamb from the bone for not a lot of meat. The house steamed fish was also amazing. They don't take online reservations for groups over 5, so we called to make one for our group of 6. It was pretty busy Friday night, so would recommend. The service was great; they drew the cutest card when they found out it was my brother's birthday and let us bring a cake. And they also offered hair ties to the people with long hair. You order through an iPad which has a beautiful menu.

It's one of the larger stalls in the market and has some seating, but not enough, and the market seating is very limited as well. I ordered the hibiscus lemonade and the very spicy Dan Dan Mian. I loved watching the staff prepare the noodles while waiting. My bowl was huge and absolutely delicious. It was very spicy as promised, but not too spicy that it was rendered not enjoyable. I looked at other orders and everything looked delicious, leading to only semi-regret of my choice. My lemonade was very good. I'm very much looking forward to returning.

The broth was too salty for me but I just didn't drink it and it made all the other ingredients taste good. Pretty good portion for the price too. My bf got the lamb version and they didn't give him much lamb so I'd go with the beef. If you're looking for a quick tasty bite this place is it!

My friend and I went here after contemplating where to eat for a couple hours. We ended up going to S'mac, and come to find out, the line was out the door. So we waited a minute or so, and then went in, and waited in line for about 10 minutes. When we finally reached the cash register, the lady had us stand there for about 3 minutes, and then she finally told us that it would be an hour wait. Yeah right! We looked at each other and left. The next day, we went to S'mac to cure our craving that we couldn't receive the day before. All the seats were occupied, but luckily, just as we walked in, a table was being cleared. We quickly sat in the chair, and put our coats there to save the table. I ordered the 'Make your Own' with cheddar cheese, bacon, and broccoli. I also ordered a ginger ale, which I should mention, the cash register forgot to give me. I just went up and asked for it, which was no big deal. We waited for our food, which was a good 45 minutes I would say. Maybe I'm being nice and saying it was a shorter amount of time than it actually was. When the food came, we were very happy, and of course, it was very delicious. It is very filling, and comes in a good size. Expensive, but what will you get for 6$ in the city that is rich and heavy? My friend and I are regular customers and seem to always be waiting for our food, but never for a seat. I will keep coming back for sure, maybe I'll try a new location, but for now, this is okay. read more

Mac and Cheese is my absolute favorite. While in Manhattan, East Village there were a lot of different choices for food. I used Google to narrow down a good choice for me and nothing appealing came of interest until I thought for whatever reason: Mac and Cheese! The first and seemingly only option was S'Mac (Sarita's) East Village. From my hotel it was a 19 minute walk but I was too hungry and excited for that walk so I Uber'd there! S'Mac is on the corner so it's very accessible. The place is small and quaint and not how I imagined it would look. There were table and seats outside but I opted to sit in doors. You order your food yourself on an ordering system and choose a number for your table...just that easy! I ordered the Mac and Cheese sampler and a margarita with rum wine! The service, food and margarita was everything unexpected for this small restaurant! 10 stars to Sarita (who was there) and her staff!!Parisienne and the Cajun Mac were my favorite, 3rd runner up was the Alpine; order 2 Margaritas if you like your drinks like me....that's all you'll need! The price for everything came to about 40.00 including tip. I'm hooked and hoping S'Mac will consider bringing their AMAZING Mac and Cheese, drinks and service to Little Haiti(Miami), Florida! read more

All I have to say is WOW! I was at the nail salon one day and the Chew was on TV and I saw this mac and cheese special, which is my favorite, and this place was on it. Of course as I was watching and saying " I want to go here so bad" in my head I assumed it was in Cali somewhere. Well once they said NYC I was in my glory!! I immediately told mt husband and that weekend we went to the city for a nice peaceful day. We indeed stopped here for dinner and checked this place out. It was a lot smaller then I had thought it was going to be and started thinking, hey maybe this isn't the real one. So I asked one of the waitresses there and they said yes that's us. So we ordered the sample skillet so we could try a little bit of everything and another small side skillet. Well we tasted each one at a time and were in love. I could not believe how some of them tasted so incredible. I also love that you can get mac and cheese to go, but it's not cooked like you're reheating it, they give it to you in a pan so when you bring it home it's fresh! Visited NY and came to this place with a friend to see what the hype was all about. Hands down the worst mac and cheese I've ever had. We got their famous Alpine Mac and Cheese, it was just dry and barely had chicken in it. We didn't finish it. Could barely get through two spoonfuls. As for their service, if that's what they're calling that nonsense...They forgot our order and after waiting for an hour, we brought it up to the cashier and she actually had the nerve to give us attitude telling us it was already being made with the angst of at least twelve teenagers going through puberty as if we were the ones being impatient. She didn't even bat an eye as we stood there and watched her shamelessly hand over our order she never gave to the kitchen and turn around to take the next order. The place was small and clean. We went on a Monday late afternoon and it was packed. Luckily, a group of people go the hint and got up to leave and we snagged the table! I ordered the Buffalo Chicken, my friend order the Cajun and the 4 Cheese. The Cajun was excellent, I had to resist from stealing from my friend. The 4 Cheese was okay, the chicken tasted a little funky. The Buffalo Chicken, again, weird tasting chicken like it came out of a box or something, but other wise very good! Everything was nice and hot! I'm a southern moved north, and my family prides itself on their amazing mac n cheese. This doesn't really come close to home made southern food...(and its not trying to) but it's a great alternative. enjoy! read more
