4/17 Update After escalating concerns about Jacques' care at Small Door UES--including a preventable emergency on 2/16--I experienced another breakdown in continuity of essential medication on 3/26. Despite clearly requesting a Lasix refill in advance, it was not prepared, and I was initially told it could not be filled due to lack of provider availability. The medication was only provided after I waited on-site and escalated the issue. This occurred after explicit assurances from leadership that there would be no further interruption in Lasix. Given these repeated issues, I transitioned Jacques' care to the Animal Medical Center. He has since been evaluated by both a primary veterinarian and a cardiologist, including an echocardiogram and full workup. He is currently stable and doing well on Lasix, Vetmedin, and his existing regimen, with no changes required. Notably, AMC's cardiology team recommended a less frequent monitoring schedule--typically every 3-4 months (or longer depending on stability)--and provided a longer-term prescription plan to ensure uninterrupted access to essential medications. Taken together, my experience at Small Door reflects both a serious lapse in medication continuity and a pattern of care that differed meaningfully from what I have since encountered at a leading veterinary institution. I am sharing this to provide context for other pet owners, particularly those managing conditions where uninterrupted access to essential medication is not optional. read more

I cannot say enough about Small Door upper east side as it is like no other vet we have ever seen with our dog in 10 years! First, the venue is beautiful, bright, and so clean - it looks like you are entering a spa! The staff are all so welcoming to the dogs that the dogs feel like they are in a fun place which removes any fear or trepidation they may have. There are wonderful treats at the front desk so our dog Mello always wanted to go in! Our vetinarian, Dr. Bris, was so loving and playful with our Mello - it really makes a difference to the dog (and us)! I was very comfortable with his understanding of Mello's treatment and all of his recommendations. There is always someone on call to text or call and they are extremely responsive. The manager Luca and the other staff members are also so giving - their style - they make payment so easy as there is such a personal touch - you don't even have to check out - they just take care of all of the billing because they know you. We ultimately had to say good-bye to our beloved Mello and if ambiance matters to you, this is the place to go. They brought in a candle, bed and blanket for Mello, and the doctor that was there that day spent so much time talking to us to make sure that we were comfortable with our decision as it was so hard for us! Her warm touch and thoughts were so appreciated during a very difficult time. When we left, we noticed that there was a sign by the front desk for patients who were coming in while we were in the room with Mello. It said that "one of their community members was saying good-bye to a loved one and that visitors should be respectful and quiet". That was such an amazing thing to do and so special. Their follow-up after we lost Mello was also very warm with personalized notes. I have never seen a vet's office with such warm touches and great medical advice as well. I had trouble finding my sick cat and getting her in the carrier. In the taxi I talked to the receptionist and I assured her I was just a few blocks away. When I arrived exactly 2 minutes past the grace period Dr Lane Simonin had already told the receptionist to turn me and my Sick cat away. She didn't even bother to look at the cat. It's not as if she was doing anything - I had arrived well within the time that she should have been spending with me. I had to pack up my terrified, freezing cat and take her to urgent care. Awful. Lane Simonin clearly cares more about her free time than a sick animal from a paying customer. read more

I took my dog to Small Door Veterinary Clinic on the Upper East Side on August 31, 2024, to address a broken tooth. While the initial experience seemed thorough, the process quickly became frustrating and disorganized. After the appointment we were told we had to wait two days for a tooth extraction estimate, from the clinic's surgeon, because the person who saw us was not the surgeon. We received a quote "directly from the surgeon" who would perform the procedure. The quote included a price range, with the lower end covering just the broken tooth extraction and the higher end accounting for any additional teeth needing work. We then scheduled a nurse appointment for bloodwork on September 7, 2024, as they claimed our previous vet's bloodwork (from 6 weeks prior) didn't provide sufficient information. Despite the added cost, we agreed to the tests. Following the nurse appointment, no changes to the surgery cost were communicated, and we received confirmation that we were all set for the procedure on September 20, 2024. However, on September 17, just three days before the surgery, I received a call from Small Door stating that the person who had originally given us the quote was not qualified to do so. They insisted that we come in that same day for the surgeon to see our dog in person, which was simply unacceptable. As young professionals, it was impossible to drop everything to accommodate their last-minute request. We had already taken time off for the surgery and budgeted based on the estimate we were given. When I explained that we could not come in, I suggested telehealth or sending photos instead. The fact that they had a "less qualified individual" handle the initial appointment was highly unprofessional, especially since they initially claimed we had to wait for the surgeon to provide the actual quote. After much back and forth, we were told on September 18 that we would likely be within the range of the initial estimate, though closer to the higher end as it was anticipated that just one one broke tooth would need work. (I knew this wasn't the case and the one tooth was the issue so I agreed). On the day of the surgery, everything seemed to go as expected, with the estimate matching the initial quote. However, when we picked up our dog, we were shocked to find out that the final cost was beyond the higher end, despite being told several times throughout the day that only one tooth had been extracted, and NO extra work was done which should have been on the lower end of the estimate. Overall, I'm extremely disappointed with the service and professionalism of Small Door. I had hoped this clinic would be a long-term care provider for my dog, but after this experience, I wouldn't recommend them to any of my fellow dog owners. Given that we're also paying a yearly membership fee, this level of service is unacceptable. read more

After I drop him off they told me the technician will be there by 12-12.30 and will message me then. at 1.10 I get a message that the technician is delayed and will only be there by 4 pm ! Are they kidding me ??? It looks like no one contacted the technician to check what time the would come by. I would have been ok to reschedule the appointment if if it was going to be that late - my poor baby is fasting since 6 am and is going to be starving till 4.30 at least, if not longer. And I am sitting here helpless - if I have to do this another day, he has faster for nothing today and he has to do that all over again another day ?!! And th didn't even have the courtesy to call and speak with u abiut the delay. Just an impersonal message. I had to call them back, message them on their app to get them to call me back eventually. The entire staff goes out if its way to relieve Scooter's anxiety about visiting the doggy doctor. Our vet, Dr. Bourjaily, asks the right questions, listens to our concerns, and takes time to observe our dog. Other staff are equally friendly and make veterinary visits pleasurable rather than stressful (and sometimes a little smelly.). I have a very large Cane Corso who became very ill over the span of the week and, when we finally decided to bring her to the vet, she was not in the best condition. Small Door arranged for me to bring my dog in same day, expedited her assessment and diagnostic testing, and arranged for emergency surgery immediately following our appointment. The receptionist was overwhelmingly comforting to us and the doctors were so gentle and professional. They thoroughly explained the diagnosis, what our options were, provided us with quotes from the emergency vet clinic nearby, helped to reduce our hospital costs by completing some pre procedure requirements, and sent us off feeling hopeful. The facility was gorgeous, clean, accommodating... and the bill was definitely reasonable! Much less than what we had anticipated. Thank you so much Small Door, we are so so so grateful! read more

Wonderful experience. I'm an animal behavior professional and was referred to small door by a trainer on our team. Was so happy we took that recommendation! Their ample rooms allows you to wait without being in a crowded waiting room, which is much less stressful for most dogs. The setup in the exam rooms is comfortable; the vet sat in a chair and talked to us and it didn't feel rushed. Great at presenting options and critically thinking through our concerns and her recommendations. The vet tech took notes while we discussed and was super friendly and professional. The UES pandemic puppy boom is no joke, so it's understandable that veterinarians have been swamped. That said, it's been challenging to find one who takes the time to get to know the pet and help inform and educate new pet owners. Enter Small Door Vet- based off of my first visit I can say that the quality of care is far superior to anything I've found this past year. The receptionists came around the desk to pet my dog and make him feel at ease. I was next, as they offered me refreshments and a calm place to wait. The vet greeted my puppy on the floor, where she stayed almost the entire visit as she spoke with me and noted his behaviors. I left with an understanding of what was happening, what I needed to do, and next steps. I have been using Small Door on the Upper East Side since they opened for my two dogs, and I have never experienced the kind of spectacular care that they provide at any other vet. Everyone at Small Door is amazing, compassionate, and responsive. Whenever either of my dogs has an issue, they always make time for an appointment, submit forms to our insurance company promptly, and respond quickly to prescription refill requests. Two weeks ago, we had to put one of our dogs down. We debated whether to use an at-home service or go to Small Door, and ultimately decided on Small Door. The compassion, love, and kindness they showed were unsurpassed. They made our family feel confident in our decision and treated our dog with the utmost gentleness and care. I am forever grateful to the staff for the incredible care they gave to our dog in her last hours. Dr. Simonin is truly the most loving and knowledgeable vet I have ever met. I feel that she genuinely has our best interests at heart and cares deeply about both our dogs and our family. We feel incredibly fortunate to have her as our vet. Small Door keeps charging me for membership for my cat who passed away a month ago. I've been with Small Door for a few years, and I DO NOT recommend it. I gave them the benefit of the doubt multiple times, but they kept failing. The only pros: 1. They relatively quickly react to various paper requests (travel, vaccination, etc.). 2. They allow me to stay in the same room with my stressed cats to calm them down while they are taking their annual bloodwork. That's the only reason I kept paying for membership, as it was important for me to reduce my pet's stress whenever possible. Cons: 1. Their diagnostic methods are questionable and seem unprofessional. - They diagnosed one of my Maine Coons with arthritis without even performing an X-ray. While the complaints - lack of activity, sensitive back - can suggest arthritis, they can also be indicative of other health issues. So, a thorough physical examination, followed by diagnostic tests such as X-rays/ultrasound, is necessary to confirm a diagnosis. They didn't recommend or insist on any of that. Even after I explicitly told them that I don't care how much it costs, if it helps my cats stay healthy, I am happy to pay for it. - A professional vet doctor knows the importance of a cardiology check-up (echocardiogram, an ECG) before dental cleaning and any procedures that require general anesthesia. Especially for breeds that are predisposed to heart diseases (like Maine Coons). Doctors at Small Door seem to not care. They never mentioned or recommended it for my cats. I am not even sure that they have an in-house anesthesiologist to monitor a pet. - Again, a professional vet doctor understands the importance of abdominal ultrasound once per 1-2 years. Many serious issues and tumors can't be detected at early stages without it. Doctors at Small Door seem to not care. 2. One of my cats (the one they diagnosed with "arthritis") suddenly died. In less than a minute, without any visible reason. Three months before that, I did an annual check-up at Small Door - bloodwork & urinalysis, physical exam. The doctor said, that everything including tests looked great, no issues were found, and the only thing they recommend is dental cleaning. 3. After my cat suddenly passed away, I messaged Small Door, sent them papers from the emergency room, and asked them to cancel the membership for her. They said they will do that. They lied. A month later, I noticed that they keep charging me for the membership for two cats. 4. I can't wait for my membership for the other cat to expire this year. Small Door doesn't allow membership cancellation, so I am forced to continue paying for it for the next six months or so. Even if I am not happy with their "professionalism" and don't want my other pet to suffer because of it. To cancel auto-renewal, I had to waste so much time on them. They agreed to cancel auto-renewal only after I filed a BBB complaint. It seems like Small Door is not too familiar with the idea of preventive care and diagnostics. This ignorance of proper preventive diagnostics can cost a pet a life. They do care about signing new memberships and posting IG stories with free drinks and a fancy lobby. But that's not what a vet clinic is about. read more

I have been struggling to find a vet for my dog that wouldn't just be gauging for money and actually cares for the animals. As a native New Yorker and owner to multiple dogs I can say finding a vet that won't make you feel as they are robbing you blind is hard to come by. I've experienced both the small practice vet offices and the newer multi-site practices popping up throughout the country, they've all left me leaving their offices feeling robbed with no real plan for my dogs treatment. I have to say this was a totally different experience!! Small door offers a basic and premium monthly membership with wellness items throughout the year to keep your dog healthy. The basic package ($12) allows for access and 24/7 online support. The premium package gives you multiple benefits including yearly vaccines, three free yearly check-ups, lab work, monthly heart worm and tick preventatives, 24/7 online support and a few other items. I chose the premium package ($89/month) because let's face it having a dog in NYC is expensive and it was one less thing to worry about. I was able to get squeezed in for an appointment as my dog was experiencing his usually allergy flare up, and after my last experience with Bond Vet I was in search of a new solution. Dr. Simonin and her vet tech really took her time in speaking with me, getting my dogs history, devising a plan, and giving me a sense of comfort. They were very patient with my dog as they tried to make him comfortable during his examines and blood work. The entire process was pretty smooth and easy. Some of the cons for me. They charge a dispensing fee for meds. If I am paying for access to the vet why do I do I have to pay for meds to be dispensed by the vet on top of paying them and their tech for their time? Fee's such as these should be included in the membership. All the other items were clearly needed and priced reasonably for what I've experienced Second, you currently are tied down for the year and it will renew if not cancelled when the year is up, according to their website. Things happen, allowing members to freeze a membership for a month or two should be included. We are now back home with meds and preventatives in hand the itching has stopped. Needless to say the experience was pretty good overall! I am happy that I have finally found a vet!!! read more

Brought our dog here for the first time today and they were fantastic. They gave us piece of mind and took the time to answer all of our questions. Always felt warm, welcoming and never rushed. Although it's pricey, the staff was fantastic and our dog felt comfortable around them which made it 100% percent worth the membership and cost. Look - vets in NYC are expensive. It's $100/yr per cat and more for dogs I think. The visits are expensive- sometimes over inflated Lu expensive but it's your pet. Here's the real problem- you have questions? You'll wait days for a half answer and days for more help. Not acceptable. I'm there and I'll stay till I can find the next best thing.... It's clean and efficient but help is a scarce commodity once you are out the door. read more
