This place is much nicer than the Sports Arena and the Clairemont stores, I guess that's why they call it Extra. The aisles seem wider and there is more selection. Once I called and asked about something that wasn't in stock in Clairemont, and they were super helpful! They even checked on stock in the back and called me right back. Horrible store with poor products, little selection, and bad service. I was not happy from the beginning when I learned that smart and final would be replacing the Hagen in Tierrasanta. Although I did not like Hagen it was leaps and bounds better than this. Virtually no healthy choices- this store is full of big box junk. Worst quality and no variety. The staff is not knowledgable and do not seem to know how to do their jobs. On the three occasions I attempted to give this store a chance each cashier I had could not figure out their register. The last time I went the person ringing me up spent almost 10 min trying to figure out how to undo a botched transaction. Not the type of store we want or need in our neighborhood. I am hoping that it will go out of business here and we can have a trader joes or sprouts. So disappointing. read more

It wasn't a good sign when....I walked up to the sushi counter and asked if they had any hamachi (yellowtail) - my favorite. One of the store managers heard me, and told me, "We can't do yellowtail, because we need fresh fish for that." Oops! I put back the other sushi I had in my hand! I did buy a 3 lb. package of lean ground turkey at a great price, only to find when I got home that they must have added quite a bit of water - it was a much more mushy consistency than I'm used to with the Jenni-O brand. Not such a good deal after all. But they have good prices on paper goods and some other, stock items. My husband keeps asking me if I want him to pick up a "cubic foot of lard", which they have a good deal on! I pass! The store is clean, and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful in finding things. If you are buying stardard, packaged things that can't be messed with, you may find some really good deals. Their organic produce section is small, but I got a few things I liked - for instance, I got a bag of broccoli florets which were fresh and delicious - I could check them out through the clear-ish bag. I wish they had more organic. Much cheaper than major chain stores for their organic! We'll go back there for certain items and, if I ever need a cubic foot of lard, I know exactly where to go! read more

I never thought I would have to write a review for a smart and final store but honestly after today's visit I feel like my experience was a bit awry to say the least! I was shopping for my office today minding my own business when an associate named Juan approached me and commented on how many creamers I was buying??? I couldn't believe it. He proceeds to comment by saying "boy those sure are a lot of creamers and I reply by saying yep. You would think the guy would just leave but then he kept going on about how they only want business to have preference and cater to only business lmao what??? I don't know if this guy was having a melt down I was just in shock over his stupidity. Like so your store isn't open to the public? Is there an underlining rule that I can only buy a certain amount of creamers? This guys is nuts. I really don't know why he was discriminating against me but I felt very discriminated against and what makes him think that I don't own a business.. I don't know what his message was and I don't care, I will be addressing this issue with corporate. read more

Stopped in as hubby and I were out for dinner and this was in the center. Was formerly the Albertsons grocery. They have really upped the game. Smart and Final has an area with fresh coffee beans and fresh deli and bakery products. Nothing like the old style of restaurant or bulk supply. They obviously still have these aisles and it was a great experience. We picked up needed few needed items at great prices and didn't have the membership store crowd to contend with. I live walking distance from here and I enjoy shopping here. My experience has always been positive. When I've asked for assistance to find an item employees have taken the time to walk me to the isle to find the item. The prices vary. Some items are decently priced others aren't but that's how many stores are. The location is convenient and the staff is courteous. I will continue to shop here. read more

I think these reviews need some perspective. Smart and Final is an evolving brand as a whole. It started as more of a restaurant and catering supply business that has slowly added fresh produce and other typical grocery items. Therefore, it's not a typical grocery store. More of it's inventory tends to be processed and large quantity food. I don't buy meat here because it's very commercial and has no flavor. Who would try the sushi when a THOUSAND better places are 5 mins away or less? I've never had problems with staff. They're friendly and helpful and I've been in like 30 times in 2016. Pick your grocery items that make sense here... I find it very handy, living across the street for SPECIFICALLY the following: -I've had no trouble with the produce and they have a decent selection of organic. Perhaps learn to pick better from the pile. -There's a teeny section of organic and 'alternative' cheeses and yogurts, enough for a quick shop since I only eat healthy, organic food and, again, it's across the street from my house. -They have the best price on fresh roasted chicken, great for a cheap and easy dinner. -Fresh flowers are a great price, especially roses. -Pantry staples and, especially, cleaning supplies are at Walmart prices without having to go to that awful store. -Water. I go through a 1/2 gall a day. Bulk teas and other drinks. -Frozen meals... Decent selection of healthy ones. Again, enough to get by. Usually on sale. -Alcohol, alcohol... great prices. However, some are better next door at Rite Aid. So, with perspective, I would have ADORED a Sprouts here but it's not. I don't love our local Vons because it's actually not a great selection since it's small PLUS it's always super busy. I get through the lines at Smart n Final fine, probably because y'all don't go. I was delighted to find a Smart & Final in Tierrasanta! Comparing prices and quality is a big deal for me. The other grocery stores are quite a bit more pricey on all items. Going to the bigger warehouse stores is not what I care for! This fits the bill perfectly for this neighborhood. The people that work here were happy to help me find what I needed. It was super clean! Very important to me!! Other stores do not take the same care that I experienced here. The gentleman in the meat department was very friendly and willing to answer my questions. Nice clean store with plenty of parking. Cashiers and staff were nice and helpful assisting me with locating particular items and they had everything I needed from cream cheese packets to sliced mushrooms and chopped onions. All the extras for an easy dinner. read more

Staff - For the most part no issues here. I had one girl who got attitude when I asked her to bag the juice, other then that no issues. Food - Here is where it starts going downhill. Produce is crap, I've grabbed avocados that were so rotten my finger went right thru them. Most of the produce is probably a week or more older then what you would get somewhere else, they just don't last as long in your fridge. Meat is often 50% off because they are not selling it before its expiration date. This is a bad sign for the store. I've purchased eggs that should have last 2 weeks and were bad after 1. Something isn't right with the quality of the food. Price - They are selling Walmart quality with Vons prices. Store - Someone else reported this and I agree 100% They have to have a rodent problem. The smell of rodent urine by the coolers was overwhelming on 2 separate occasions. I used to keep mice and the smell was identical. I get the fact most stores have issues with rodents, it's part of life for the store, but if it smells this bad, you guys are not cleaning it well and you are losing the fight. Suggestions - Fresher produce, cleaner store, lower the prices you are not selling anything better then Walmart. Add a deli counter. read more

This smart in final is smaller and has less crowds compared to other ones I have been to. But this store is excellent!! Clean, good service, and the register lines go quick!! Def my new go to smart n final from now on!! Whoever is in charge at this store kudos to you because every smart n final I go to the lines are always crazy and it is hard to find help. Smart & Final Extra's are probably my new favorite grocery stores. They sell items in bulk and in smaller household sizes as well - making it a one stop shop for me. This location happens to be near my house, and is always so clean and organized. The selection of fresh produce is fantastic and I'd never thought I'd buy sushi from a grocery store - but it's really, really good! They also have an awesome selection of healthier stuff - like my favorite Amy's frozen meals! The prices are so low and the staff is so friendly and helpful. I'm always in and out quickly because they manage the number of guests in line so well! Love having this as my neighborhood grocery store! read more

Tierrasanta please bring back Albertsons!!!! S&F is not a good fit for this area. The food is not fresh, often expired and not a lot of choices. The staff is unfriendly and has a lot of turnover. The best part is the wine and liquor prices. read more

Like most people in Tierrasanta I was excited for another store, but I'm not so sure about this place. I have made three trips to Smart and Final in the last week. The first time was on opening day. Not surprisingly it was very busy. The store set up is not great. You can not go up and down the aisles, without the people being in the checkout line getting in the way. When it's very busy you have people in line, and people coming from the left and right all trying to get down aside 10. No one wants to be courteous, they just wanna go. Big fail. Most of the prices are good and competitive. However,the prices on K cups is a joke. I'll shop elsewhere for those. Lunch meat, $6 for Bologna. LOL umm no. It is nice being able to buy snacks in bulk without needing a membership. I tried some First Street brands and they were good. No issues there. On my third trip this irked me. We had an employee standing at the front of the store saying she could not open register 4, because she was still on her break. I heard her say she was on her break five times, yet she continued to stand at the front of the store doing nothing. If you're on a break, you do not need to be standing on the floor. After she told her manager she would not open up several times, she then very loudly said she only had 30 minutes left. Why are you even there? Take your ass to the break room go do something. The customers do not want to hear about your break and that you have to go home soon. And quite frankly her standing there saying that she wasn't willing to work makes me think that the employees have poor worth ethic and makes her look lazy. Then a employee questioned my child's jacket and the saying on it. As far as I know, there are no smart and final employees that buy my children's clothing. I will likely go back and try a few more times however if I keep running into annoying employees I'll definitely shop somewhere else. read more

However the service worker knowledge/competence and painfully long waiting times make this place only just barely tolerable. There seems to be a major gap in training and support from management. This new "Extra" store is great. Finally found a nearby grocery that has a nice selection of rice and beans. They sell both small and bulk bags. And by bulk, I mean the type that most Asian markets have (like 5lb, 10lb, 25lb+ bags). Great for heavy rice eating families. This store also has much cheaper prices than the former Albertsons/Haggen that they took over. read more

Yikes the employees here are a mess!! Every time I go to checkout there is a long line and something goes wrong at the cash register. Another thing that was very annoying was that when I was using my ebt to pay for my food the cashier said "this is on your ebt!l card" like literally for no reason. And basically yelled it out! The whole point of the ebt cards is so it can be discreet but she had to let everyone know in the large line that I am low income. Ugh!! Get better staff!!! read more

Not a fan of this Smart & Final at all. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that a Smart & Final would replace the Haggens. These are two very different type of stores. I'm not a fan of the small seafood department nor the employees. One of the employees just looks so miserable being there and to top it off she always throws the groceries in the bag without separating them. Countless times I have come home and had my peaches bruised and cans on top of my bread. None of the employees are friendly but this one takes the cake. I try to avoid going here as much as I can. The only time I'll come here is if I need a single item or two & too lazy to drive to Vons. Most of the time, they only have 2 lanes open...even when there's a ridiculous amount of people waiting in line at each of those lanes. The staff look like they're miserable working here & even when they try to be nice, it seems so forced. I've even witnessed a few employees acting rude towards people using WIC. One woman in front of me was using her WIC certificates/checks for her groceries & the cashier rolled her eyes at her. She didn't even try to hide her annoyance. I went to this location to buy some cleaning vinegar I called ahead to ask if they stock it and they told me yes. Flash forward I could not find it so I asked for help and Diana said she would be in the aisle shortly to help me locate it. 20 mins went by and she still was not there only to find out she was working the register and I just asked her if she could get someone else to help calmly waited in the aisle and I notice an employee walk by completely ignored me went to Diana's register and the employee called out to me and told me if I could wait a minute so she can let Diana go. First off I am a customer there is no reason for her to speak to me from across the way and tell me to hold on when she could have helped when she blatantly ignored me her name was Joanna. Diana gets off the register she couldn't find the vinegar asked David I believe the manager to where he said they didn't have any so I said thank you and walked away ..now behind me Diana and him are speaking about how they've never heard of the product and he guesses the product never sells. This smart and final was extremely unprofessional and I seriously doubt management will handle this accordingly. Besides the instance the employees have always been unfriendly and I refuse to support a business that has no regard for their customers. read more

The worst grocery store I have ever been to. The setup is fine as are the prices but the employees are horrible! They are slow and unaware.

This store is a nightmare. Horrible service. Never any cashiers or enough employees to properly run this store. 2/13/17 Deli department is selling Large bags of of pre-sliced pepperoni turned brown after being un-refrigerated for way too long! On one visit, I moved the bag to another cold case so deli staff would "see" the now brown food item. 3 days later, I found it back on the shelf on top of a fresher package of the same item. YUKK! That 2nd visit on 2/15/17 they had 15 people in line, and ONE cashier doing her very best, she called for customer service 5 times with no response from Manager "Logan" or other clerks that hid or stocked produce the entire time. I found the back receiving dock wide open and unattended, I could plainly see Liquor inventory sitting 20 steps inside the warehouse roll up, with no one in sight. I located the Managers Office, I found the door wide open with no one around at all, and not secured Really? These guys have no idea what service is all about, let's not talk safety or inventory security. After several managers, this store continues to struggle... I tried to call Main office and I got a recording offering me to take a survey and a chance to win a trip somewhere... I hung up and got the District Managers name from another store. "Brian Degroot How can you provide excellent service today?" Just close it already. read more

I walked into the store and immediately is smelled like cat piss. The smell seemed to go away when I walked into the produce section. I walked around the store some more and when I got to the back around the dairy it smelt like a hamster's cage and like they had cleaned with a dirty mop. Come on Smart and Final, I really want you to succeed, and not follow the path of Albertson's and Haggens. You are my go to store because I try to avoid Von's. But, you've got to make some improvements. For example, I have to watch every item that has an expiration date, because apparently your staff doesn't. Expired yogurt, milk good for just 2 days etc. Open up some more cashiers! At least Von's has a policy of "3 or more" (they don't always follow it), but you only open up 2 registers, no matter how long the line. Most of the personnel seems to try, although they seem to be frustrated, but "Miss Eyebrows" is the rudest and slowest !! If she doesn't want to be there, she should move on. I like your store and the selection, but please make some improvements!! read more

If you're looking for a grocery store where you can waste half of your day, this is the place for you. And not because it's just that awesome, but because you can guarantee that they will never have more than two registers open even when the lines are going down the aisle. The cashiers or maybe it's the managers seem completely oblivious to the lines and make no effort to move things a little faster or even open another register. On top of that issue, it's over priced on pretty much every thing. Quite possibly one of the worst places to shop. read more

I liked Smart and Final in Clairemont so was happy to see them come to our neighborhood. Well, that went out the window quick. We lost the deli, so no lunch meat or cheese........there is no meat market.....I looked at the scallops and they were from CHINA...are you kidding, guess I won't be eating those......the bakery sucks, I have thrown a bunch of that out........bought a box of sushi and found a chunk of lint and black hair in it, almost lost my cookies on that one...how can you miss that. And yes, the lines are ridiculous and none of the employees want to be there. And now to top it off, now they don't even give you a bag.....if you want me to buy groceries, then give me a darn bag. Unfortunately, the Vons store has the rest of the unfriendly employees......so Tierrasanta has no big grocery stores. Primo is the only nice store in the area.......it is sad. read more

I am very excited and pleased with this store. The set up is great and it is very well organized. The produce section looks amazing and the also the meat department is great.They have good quality meat for low prices better than Von's. Their customer service is always willing to lend a helping hand. Overall the store is great and I'm very pleased to have this smart and final in Tierrasanta. read more
