If you're having a gathering and need a large quantity of basic, ordinary products, then this is the store that will probably have what you need. But you'll need patience and a keen eye for to find what you're searching for because the only space available is where you need to walk with your cart. The shelves and refrigerators are stuffed with stuff. Be prepared to be standing in front of the packed shelves for a while if this is your first time here. I wouldn't come here f I wanted unique or special selections but for the simple, run of the mill needs, I wouldn't pass it up. I placed an online order and they had it ready for me when I got there. When I came to pick up my order, no one was there to help me to check out because they were understaffed. We got it sorted out after some time passed and I was glad to save some time. Then I came back because I got a special request to ship out chili to Texas. Apparently, smart and final is the only location that sells this specific Chili Con Carne no beans which is comparable to The Original Tommy's. Unfortunately, there aren't any smart n finals in the Dallas area so shipping this frozen tube cost a pretty penny. I like to look for sales items here once in a while, and today's D Day for saving. I've seen many who are bargain hunters, like myself, 'lurking' around in the area between yogurts and dairy section. What I found were mostly bakery items and a few sorry-looking fruits, some can goods, and variety of knickknacks. Half price on expiring (on the day of or a few more days left) breads are the best for me. If you are making pasta, this is the place to come pickup some on sale's cheese bread, garlic bread, butter top bread, or croissants. Now I understand why the reviews are awful! There is always a line and they always call for another register to open. So that being said I watched the lady call over 2 people that were behind me to go to the register that is empty. I only had a Red Bull and a Mr goodbar. That is it and yet the lady called over two other people that were behind me. There is NO customer service at that store. So I left my drink and candy bar on the conveyor belt and just left. Came in to find an item I had purchased here numerous times before. Unfortunately, it was not on the shelf so I sought out assistance. After finding an employee, this person seemed preoccupied and although he looked on the shelf where I had already searched he very nicely said he had another task and will return. He never came back so I sought out an assistant manager who looked on his phone and told me the item is no longer carried by Smart and Final. Please, hire more employees and educate them on how to answer consumer inquiries correctly. Would be a helpful timesaver and minimize consumer frustration . HUGE shoutout to Diane and Alda. Thank you both!! Sometimes a seemingly obvious transaction gets bogged down in red tape and rules. I love making poached eggs on corned beef hash. Smart & Final has the best pricing on a box of 6 Hormel / Mary Kitchen cans. Much more cost effective than individual cans, which they also sell. Went to snag a box and found they were sold out, yet the tag and pricing were on the shelf. I asked and was able to get 6 individual cans for the reduced box price. Seems like a no-brainer, but not all places will do that. The excuse is inventory control, policy, whatever. My local Pavilions, Vons & Ralph's have nothing over my local Smart & Final! The manager Chris (aka the "Watermelon Whisperer) is very customer service focused, which I love. And today I met another employee named Nick, who was so friendly, and actually took me 3 times to the items I was looking for! There's nothing more valuable than a clerk who knows his merchandise. Nathan at check-out is always so friendly, Ely in produce is always so happy & helpful, and sweet Mikey keeps the carts in the parking lot away from our cars. As for the prices, they all fluctuate from highs to lows, and they seem in line. But at this point, I'm really paying for the service. I would encourage everyone to shop at Smart & Final, but avoid the "Service Manager" Alda. She is extremely rude and obnoxious when checking you out. I had baby food jars in a basket and I put on the conveyer belt. I thought it would be easier for her to grab out of the basket and scan. Well she took the basket held it high up and dumped the entire basket of baby food jars out, approx 20 jars, on the belt. I thought they were going to break and some actually rolled off onto the floor. That's how much force she used, then threw the basket. Even the checker next to her said "Are you ok Alda?" Really great prices. I actually feel SMART to shop here. In the old days, S&F was mainly where businesses shopped -- large size goods / commercial grade and packaging. Today, they still have LARGE, but also more normal size for the average consumer. Most importantly, you don't need a membership / resale # to shop here any longer. You won't find a butcher here, but they do have freshly packaged meat (as well as frozen). Lots of fresh produce, frozen and refrigerated goods, canned goods, paper goods, and a ton of bottled and packaged items. They even have BOOZE: fine liquors, wine, and beer -- lots of it, actually! Tips: ==== * Bring your own COLD storage bags for the gallons of ice cream you will buy (oh yes you will). The lines may be long, and your ice cream will be soup by the time you get thru and home. This place is a quicker alternative to Costco, but I've been disappointed here before. In the past few months I bought two bags that have rotten fruit (cuties and apples) which I didn't discover until I went home. Last week I bought a pack of ribs, and the very next night went to cook it. It was horribly rotten, and made my entire house smell. I called the store and told them that they may be selling rotten ribs, but they didn't care. I got a quick thank you and they hung up. No followup questions about the product or anything. It's concerning that they don't take food safety seriously and it makes me nervous to buy non canned goods from them in the future. read more

I shop here once a week, this location has become my local grocery store. The S&F staff is always friendly and willing to help. Check out lines are quick, as a regular I'm usually greeted by the friendly store manager, Dianne. I've also been assisted by Vanessa in the meat department, who answers my questions about the different cuts of meat for my recipes. Overall, the experience is pleasant as they provide great customer service and support. read more

great prices on produce..30% less than pavillions, but eat it quick. it never lasts very long. i juice it and freeze it. plenty of good prices to be had....but, CHECK the expiration dates....many items are near or past their expiration...crackers, soup, meat. i bought jenni O turkey, expired day before. 2-3 stars is about right. 3 stars for their beer selection and prices. In a somewhat out-of-place location, this cheap warehouse-style grocery and supply store decided to open up shop in a largely upscale, wealthy Westlake Village area. This location has been going through some major changes as of late. Albertsons to Haggen to now, Smart N Final. I can only guess how long this store may stay in business in such a nice area. While I believe this is a great store for those trying to save money and buy on the cheap without a Costco membership, the overall quality of this store doesn't compare. I was generally unimpressed by the freshness of the produce section, and other aisles seemed lacking. The positives are their large beer and alcohol selection, cheap warehouse-like pricing on products such as cups and drinks, and mostly non-crowded shopping. All in all, it's a decent enough store for me to visit when in the area, but it wouldn't be a top choice by any means, unless I was in a rush. It is convenient, and with few quick n easy options in the area, this can suffice. Parking is hassle free. Go ahead and check this place out for yourself. It's still generally new, so they have plenty of time to improve! read more

This is as forgettable a grocery store you will find. It was an Albertson's for years. Then it was another name, which was supposed to be more upscale, but was still just Albertson's under a different name. For the past couple of years, it's Smart & Final. The best word I can think of to describe it is "ample". It's got the products you need in a pinch. It's open until 10pm. The cashiers at night are a study in human psychological behavior. One looks like she's super depressed, which I can understand why she would be. One is absurdly chatty. I ran into someone I know remotely, one night, in line here. We were in the chatty cashier's line. Literally, as we asked each other small talk questions... the cashier thought we were asking her the questions... and would enthusiastically answer each one. And if the dumpy ambiance couldn't get better, now there is 99 Cent Store next door. Oh, and a Wendy's too. This mall is kind of a blight on Westlake Village, just saying. read more

I asked why and he said it was because I came in with a bag. This was ridiculous!! Already with a pandemic going on - it did not help. He approached as if he were a cop. I previously reviewed this in October 2023, and now updating my review. BTW: On that review in October, it took a speedy response from management in mid-January, 2024!! That previous complaint was about their Weekly Digital Ads, and how it discriminates against Senior Citizens in FORCING them to 1) Click on the item you want and 2) carry a SmartPhone around and then Display the items to the cashier. WHY? What's wrong with the old method of your home telephone number? I had been in their stores recently, had to borrow my spouse's iPhone, and had trouble bringing up their website to show the cashier. Got a very snotty response by her telling me that it's my phone! I showed her that it was NOT responding on THEIR website, but it did respond when I went to another website totally unrelated! Didn't say anything, didn't apologize. Later, when talking to the clerk that was putting away the bags for me, she commented that "Yeah, the system can be slow." Tonight - I tried to use their website to get the items for their Weekly Digital Ads. The website did not respond, and I tried intermittently about every 15 minutes for about 3 hours before finally giving up. IF THE COMPANY IS GOING TO FORCE USERS TO USE THEIR *!&^%!$! WEBSITE FOR DIGITAL ADS, THE LEAST THEY CAN DO IS HAVE THEIR WEBSITE WORKING! The company is totally unresponsive, persists in this stupid Digital process. As an aside, a company such as Home Depot and DIY Hardware Center - once you establish who you are and with proper ID, they can use your phone number, and at the most, you show your ID and you can get a discount. At other grocery stores, such as Ralphs or Vons, your phone number is enough as an ID to get you their Specials of the week, without going through all this Digital stuff that Smart & Final seems to enjoy putting their customers through. I am seriously thinking of just bypassing Smart & Final altogether and not waste my time trying to use their website, both at home as well as at the store. It is frustrating, and a total waste of MY time. Talking to a few of my Senior Citizen friends, many feel the same way. They may have one cellphone or in some cases, no cellphone and just use their 'trusty' landline, which was no problem for Smart & Final until some of their upper mgmt decided to frustrate Senior Citizens with Digital Ads! I wasn't a fan of Smart & Final in the past visits here mainly because of the checkout lanes being very limited and have at least 5 people in the 1-2 checkout lanes available. Now they have gotten much better at it! The last time I was here, they opened another lane and made it faster to checkout. Also, the cashier named Daniel is great! He is not also fast, but very positive and enjoys what he does at Smart & Final. I do like that they have bundles in certain items, which is more convenient. There's a lot to like about this store: it has good selection and great prices, and the quality of the produce is usually excellent. But there are three things that keep me from giving it a 4- or 5-star rating. First, they frequently run out entirely of things that I've specifically gone there for: celery or fresh shrimp. Second, the lines at check-out are often lengthy; I deal with this by trying to go at off-hours or on unpopular days. Finally, and what annoys me the most: why do you still have 5 of the best parking spots (shaded, closest to the front door) reserved for your on-line shoppers? In two years, when I shop with you at least once weekly, I have NOT ONCE seen any car picking up groceries ordered on-line. Moreover, I haven't once seen a sales associate "shopping" for an on-line customer. Do you realize the message you're sending to in-person customers? It's this: even though it costs Smart & Final much less to get us through the store than on-line customers, we're giving on-line customers (who don't even exist anymore?) the super-star treatment. Can you please reexamine this policy, and at least cut down the number of parking spots for on-line shoppers, or move them to the front or the side of the store? read more

This the worst grocery store I have ever experienced. The product selection is just okay, but the staff throughout and especially the checkout staff, is HORRIBLE! I actually boycotted the store for two months and decided to give it another chance since it's the closest store to my house. 2 days in a row I again, experienced morons at the register. Two days ago, I was in the 10 items or less line with five or six items. The woman in front of me had three items and the woman in front of her had a basket full of groceries. Full basket lady could've been considerate to the woman behind her by letting her go first, but no. All of a sudden an employee came up and moved basket lady to the now opening next register. So we're like great! Then the cashier in our line left. We were all (woman in front, me and person behind me) standing in a line with no cashier and no communication that this register was now closed. Crazy incompetence. Yesterday, I chose one of two registers available ( I have succumbed to the fact that I will always choose the longest wait register). As soon as I put my items down, a price check was needed. Not anyone's fault, just happens - no worries. So, several shoppers who arrived after I did flew through the other checkout as I stood and waited - still, whatever. So, I finally get up to be checked out with no one behind me. This is what blows my mind. The checker says to me, "Sorry sir, this will take just a minute." She proceeds to pull out her drawer and count out her money - now keep in mind, there is no one behind me and she knows I have been waiting an inordinate amount of time, but chooses to make me wait. What, she couldn't have checked me out and then counted out her money? Again no common sense, no service skills, no going there anymore. Smart & Final is where you need to go buy for large family dinner or a party. They have bulk options in almost every food category, which is cost effective and produces much less waste! You don't need a membership, unlike Costco, and you can get regular sized items as well- but at a great price. The bakery items and the produce didn't seem that great. I didn't even see a bakery in the store, so everything must be shipped in. I recommend buying only pantry and frozen here ! read more
