They replaced the asphalt roof and plywood decking on the entire house and garage and did a fantastic job. I am very pleased with Smart Roofing throughout the process of replacing our roof with GAF Timberline HD products. Pete K was very easy to work with from estimation, scope, status, and follow ups. He was very accommodating to our schedules and straightforward -- no hard sales pitches. (I worked with 5 roof companies for proposals) The roofing crew took extra effort to be clean and made good hard work of the project. Smart Roofing completed our roof in June 2018. I wanted to wait through 3 of the seasons before I posted my review of their company. Through the summer & the infamous polar vortex winter, I am happy to report that my roof looks as great as the day they finished it. They took great care of the flashing around both our chimneys & our skylights to ensure there wasn't a possibility of a leak. Did not have work completed by Smart Roofing, but after the huge storm in Schaumburg last summer, we had Smart Roofing come out to review our damage and meet with the insurance adjuster. After that meeting, we were approved for only part of the damage incurred and when we looked to Smart Roofing for guidance on how to proceed with only part of our issues covered, the person we met with was slow to reply and then eventually stopped replying all together. We decided to resume working on the claim this summer with a new contractor who has worked hard to get us approved for the damage that needed repairing, but it has been an uphill battle because of how the original meeting went with Smart. Frustrating to hear that we probably would've been approved for more if we had had the right guidance from the beginning. read more

I just called Smart roofing and I informed them I had a leak and they told me that my roof is no longer under warranty. I bought 25 year shingles. They wanted to charge me $350 to come out and check out the leak. They are a company that doesn't stand behind the products they sell. read more

Our Association hired Smart Roofing to replace roofs for our 11 townhomes in August 2020 (see photos from their website acknowledging our project). We live in this place since fall of 2017, and we did not have a problem with roof leak like this, flooding three floors in February 2021. On February 20th we reported a leak damaging hardwood floor on the top floor, ceiling and wall on the main floor, and ceiling/wall in the garage. Smart Roofing came to remove snow from the roof on February 21st. Then Mike came to inspect our unit on March 1st, and he came again with his boss, and one employee on March 9th, 2021 to self-inspect roof that they installed 7 months prior. My camera recorded 5 hours of inspection and replacing shingles. After this "repair/inspection", it was determined by Smart Roofing that nothing is wrong with this roof, and leak was due only to Ice Damming. We filed claim with our insurance, and the adjuster who came on April 10th, 2021 sounded an alarm with some photos he took of the roof. He suggested to have a different roofing contractor to look at it. We asked a different roofer to look, as well as an Architect. They did not like what they saw, and they said flashing is bad! They said we might have problems like this in a winter months more than warm months. Smart Roofing did not take any financial responsibility to any repairs in our unit which is estimated for over 12K. Below are photos for you to see what attention to detail work you might expect when you hire Smart Roofing! BTW: During roof replacement they did not cover vents opening, so our brand-new bathroom fans were clogged with shingle debris. They were also hitting something so hard that our ceiling closet fixture fell off the ceiling one day during roof replacement! PS. Marlene and Dennis: My wife and I had the pleasure of having our flat roof replaced by Smart Roofing (847-797-0404) and their staff and crew in 2021. My wife and I are not related to anyone at Smart Roofing. This is an objective review. Mike, Smart roof scheduler, suggested the best insulation for the flat roof in order to stop the heat from escaping through the roof and to insulate the room below. Mike took his time to suggest and explain all the materials and the work to be done to install and protect the flat roof. My wife and I thankfully agreed with all of Mike's suggestions. Smart Roofing and Mike and its staff and crew performed Excellent work installing the flat roof. They installed the proper insulation and heat synced the membrane to protect it. They installed a membrane of very high quality. Their installation was Excellent. This review is being posted in November 2021 during the coldest days. My wife and I honestly state that all the suggestions and the installation by Smart Roofing and Mike and the staff and crew worked Perfectly. The room below is Excellently retaining heat. During the rain storms prior to the cold weather, the water drained off the roof like a water fall - the drainage is excellent. In addition, a few months after Smart Roofing and the staff and crew installed the flat roof Mike came back without cost to inspect and make sure the flat roof was performing Excellently and Perfectly. We hired SR and Stan to fix several leaks in our roof. We spent thousands of dollars to make the repairs, knowing that in the coming year we would need to have a full roof replacement. Months after the repairs, the same leaks appeared. We recontacted Stan and according to him, there is no way to determine where a roof leak is (different from his opinion prior to making the repairs) and therefore we'd just need to replace the entire roof. Clearly, their business is total roof replacement...but if they can't fix two leaks, I'd question whether you want to hire them to replace an entire roof. Save the frustration and find somebody else. read more

I had Pete come to check out a leak in the roof. He was on-time and very friendly. He even was able to meet me before work, so that it didn't interrupt my schedule. He viewed the leak from both the attic and the roof and gave me a few options to fix it. He re-caulked some of the shingles down, while he was there, as a temporary fix. After this, he then laid out the plan for the full fix that we might have to do, if it continues to leak. All in all, it took him about 30 minutes to do everything. He was extremely personable and professional. I will definitely be calling him back when my roof needs to be torn off and replaced. My parents have also used him in the past. In fact that is how I was recommended to call him. They've had him put a new roof on their old house before they sold. He's also put on a cedar roof on their new home. The work that they have done always looks extremely professional. I know that after working multiple times with this company for the past 10 years, my dad would give Smart Roofing 5 stars as well. read more

They gave us the most reasonable estimate and did not try to charge for extras like other roofing companies tend to do. I have used Smart Roofing for a flat top roof and had a good customer experience. However, my most recent experience of repairs to my tile roof resulted in a unsatisfactory customer experience. The first crew to complete an estimate did not do a thorough inspection resulting in the need for a second estimate appointment. They failed to observe a missing downspout that was in plain sight. The crew was very sloppy with maintaining the work site resulting in soldering materials scattered on my walkway for over a week. Scrap copper from downspouts was left at my entrance. The lack of conscientiousness, attention to detail and respect for the property owner's home would lead me to say you may want to find a roofer offering a better customer experience and consideration for cleaning the work site. read more

Stan and his team performed an excellent slate roof tear off and replacement; they showed up on time and worked continuously until the job was complete. Stan was very helpful in locating the Vermont slate that matched the original slate color, size and quality. I bid the job with 4 slate roofing contractors and Stan was the most responsive; helpful with specifications; and very fairly priced. Despite the claim on their website, Smart Roofing does not offer free estimates. I had a home inspection last week and the inspector noticed roof damage. He suggested I contact a roofer for an estimate so that we can negotiate the repair cost into the purchase contract. The only reason I gave it an extra star is because the lady who answered the phone was pleasant when telling me they'd charge "at least $350" to come out for an estimate. read more

We used Smart Roofers a few years ago and were very happy with our experience. My sister recommended them after she had someone come out for a free estimate. (She was told by another roofing company that she needed to replace the entire roof.) Andrew told them that she didn't need a new roof at all, which was great news. I used them to replace our roof and they did a great job. They explained exactly what they would be doing and kept the site very clean. This is very concerning. All of the reviews on this page are negative, while the non-recommended ones on the linked page all extremely positive - and much more closely resembled our experience. What's going on here, Yelp? Please be assured, this is a real review of a real experience we had with Smart Roofing. Stan and his crew earned every one of my five stars. Stan had been recommended by our architect who'd used him many times for very picky clients. According to her, he never failed to over-deliver. So when our shake roof had to be totally replaced, he was one of the contractors we called for a bid. 1) Stan absolutely does NOT charge for estimate -and estimate, by the way, that. was more detailed and concise than any I've ever gotten. Over the course of the negotiations, Stan patiently explained the process, helped us decide on the most appropriate materials, then kept in touch while we wrapped our minds around what was a very large project. Of course, he never charged us. 2) Roofing is messy. Stan tried to prepared us for the disruption, but told us we wouldn't have to lift a finger - his crew would do it all. The first day on the job, Stan's crews carefully removed or covered the furniture and plants on our four patios. During the day, the property looked like a war zone. Every night, before they left, the guys removed the debris - including nails - raked the lawn, and yes - hosed the patios, walkways and driveway. Like they were never really there - only better. Even my lawn service was impressed. 3) My neighbors were so impressed, one of them contacted Stan for their repair. 4) When he realize there was debris in my attic, Stan even sent a crew to clean my attic. 5) Throughout the entire two weeks, Stan's crew showed up at 7:30, left at way past 5:00, and were quiet and respectful the entire time. Every morning, Mario, the foreman, would explain that day's tasks and ask again if I had any concerns. We were out of town when the job was finished, so when we got back, I noticed a few of the gutters and downspouts had been repaired and a few replaced. I asked Stan about it. No charge - just needed touching up. We have had really wonderful contractors, but Stan and his crew are the best I've ever worked with. These negative reviews are a travesty. This company replaced the roof on my neighbors home a few weeks ago. Our driveway is very close to their house and the workers failed to clean it off as they worked. They must not have cleaned out their gutters either. We have picked up no less than 30 nails from our driveway and have had 3 of our tires on our cars punctured. Calls to the company were a waste of time. They did nothing and denied any wrongdoing. I would NEVER use them or recommend them. read more

Well, the roof came out nice, working with Stan was straightforward and easy, and the price was right... However one of the workers significantly damaged the tree in front of our house, breaking two major branches. I did appreciate that they took care of the cost of tree pruning to help make it look better. The tree started to grow back, but eventually the entire crown (the top 1/3 of the tree) snapped off at the weak point, where the broken branch had been peeled off. It will take many years for it to regrow and will probably never be quite as nice. The crew really needs to focus maintaining the property while on site. read more

My salesman, Mike, was quite responsive before and after the sale. They did a little extra while they were here and even stopped back the next week for one more thing with no extra charge.
