Matthew's Roofing installed a new roof on my 100 plus year old 2 flat in Logan Square. The work involved a complete tear off of the existing roofing material (many layers thick, completely filling a large dumpster to overflow) masonry work to repair the inner roof parapet wall and new chimney, and new state of the art roofing foam insulation board, membrane installation and related flat roofing materials. The work started promptly. The crew was hardworking and conscientious and greatly exceeded my expectations. When they were done I had a beautiful new roof. Cleanup was done especially well. Once work started, crews were on-site until timely completion. When there was the threat of rain, exposed areas were covered. The price was a little more than others charge, but given that they have been in business for many years, the quality of work performed, the quality of the materials used and the warranty provided, it was worth the small premium. The company communicated with me every step of the way and shared pictures of trouble areas, progress, and completion. read more

I had always heard that Matthews Roofing was very good and a reputable company. I had a few missing shingles on my roof that needed replacement. Philip from Matthews Roofing came out and gave me an estimate ($750). He said they could come and do the work while I wasn't home. Weeks passed and one day I noticed a package of new shingles in the backyard. I contacted Philip to ask if they left the shingles and when they would begin the work. Philip told me the work was completed. I went up to my roof to check and there were still missing shingles on both sides of the roof, mostly near the dormers. I am lucky in that I live near the Bloomingdale Trail and can get a clear view of my roof from the trail. If I was elderly or disabled or unable to view my roof, I would have just taken their word for it. I sent Philip photos of the missing shingles and he said he'd come back out to replace them. The workers who came were incredulous when I told them about the missing shingles. I had to show them the photos on my phone. Either they didn't believe me or they weren't told what work they were supposed to do at my house. I called Keith Matthews, the manager, several times and left messages. I sent him emails. He never got back to me. I think they probably have more work than they can handle and are subcontracting out jobs to people who are not qualified or who are doing sloppy work. Such a disappointment. RUN THE OTHER WAY. Our building (a 100-year-old, six-unit condo building on Chicago's north side) hired Matthews in August '22 to replace our roof and gutters. Midway through the project, Chicago experienced summer storms. Despite these being forecasted all week, Matthews neglected to sufficiently tarp the ongoing work. As a result, the entire north side of the building experienced flooding, with the top floor unit experiencing flooding so severe that the owners have been forced to evacuate for nearly four months while entire walls, ceilings, floors, and electrical systems are treated for water mitigation and replaced. During the storms, Matthews came out to better tarp, stopping the flooding and demonstrating the entire debacle to be completely avoidable. To add insult to injury, the crew completely destroyed a unit's HVAC system, using the air ducts as a walking path and crushing them in the process. Matthews claims they are not responsible for HVAC systems, and is denying any responsibility for the destruction. Finally, when work was wrapping up, a unit owner noticed that the front gutters had not yet been replaced. When we inquired about this with Matthews, they declared they would not be replacing the roof above the sunrooms or front gutters, despite the contract outlining a complete replacement of "all existing roofing and gutters." They pushed our building to pay them an additional $4500 (on top of the $60.4k total agreed to in the contract) to do that work. Eventually they relented when it became clear we understood the terms of our contract, and would take legal action if necessary. Last but not least, Matthews insurance attempted to buy off the building (and dissolve Matthews of any responsibility) with less than 1/10 of what the damage will actually cost the collective owners. It's worth noting each unit's insurance provider, as well as the HOA's insurer, has declared the situation a case of "pure negligence." Matthews is a completely unprofessional, unqualified, reckless company. Please learn from us and avoid at all costs. read more

I don't understand how this company has 5 stars. It must be for recent new customers. In my experience, their work and customer service is very bad. They put up my roof and did not install some areas correctly. I found out when I had an inspector come out due to a roof leak. They explained that I needed to call the roofing company because they did not not install the shingles right close to the chimney. I called Matthew Roofing twice over a month and half ago. They still have not called me back after telling me their manager would be giving me a call. Honestly, I don't know why I would expect them to fix a job they didn't do right in the first place. I will be finding another roofing company. I will also follow up with a 2nd review showing photos of their bad work and promoting the new roofing company that will have to fix what they did wrong. I would not suggest anyone use Matthew Roofing, even if they do offer better pricing. It will hurt you more in the end. My roof is leaking and now have internal damage because they did a half job and won't come out to fix something so simple. What a shame. read more

This company was hired by the seller of a property that i bought and Eric From matthews roofing passed and certified that the my flat roof has no issues and leak. Lets just say that me trusting their inspection cost us 24-25K for a total tear off of our roof to solve the existing leak issue that this licensed roofer told me was none existent. I hope you avoid this company at all cost unless you want to gamble your money for an untrustworthy and unreliable company. read more

They re-did the roof of my building a few years ago and it has been riddled with leaks here and there since. I had a leak in my unit for almost 2 years that they could not fix. They ultimately cut the line to my air conditioning from the roof to my unit while trying (and failing) to fix the leak. It then took several weeks for them to admit fault in ruining my air conditioning. When I explained the obvious causal relationship between their roof work and the air conditioning not working, they tried to say they had nothing to do with it. Felt like I was being gas lighted. Ultimately, roof was fixed (not after them coming out several times) and they agreed to pay a certain amount to have the air conditioning fixed, though it was 100% their work that led to the line being severed. Would not recommend them to anyone. read more

Our building has been SO HAPPY with the projects that Eric from Matthews did for us this fall. They patched our main roof, installed a new gutter with two downspouts (prior gutter had one), and replaced a balcony's roof. Eric saw it through from start to finish with a positive attitude the entire time, and that is a rare thing indeed. And, he answered his phone (equally rare!). From the moment Eric came to give a quote, he was forthright about the most realistic and affordable options and insisted a full main roof tear-off at this time (which would have meant much more money for them) wasn't needed. Regarding the gutter situation, he helped us brainstorm options until we found the best solution. And as to the balcony roof, he recommended a specific roofing product that would hold up under the deck we wanted to put on it. He always answered all of our questions thoroughly and considered our solutions as valid as his own. Plus, he worked with the other contractors we had and recommended best practices for related work we needed. When the crews came to do the actual work, Eric actually showed to ensure the job was being done with the details outlined in the contract and even assisted the crew in specific remediation we requested as we saw what was under the old roof. And, wonder of wonders, when the new front balcony roof took longer to tear off than they had anticipated, Ever (crew boss) and his guys took as much time as it needed - and I'm talking an extra full day of a 2-4-man crew. When I asked him about it, he said that he always took the time to do it right because he didn't want to come back to re-do it under their warranty. Matthews Roofing is one of the rare companies that has found a way to stay in business while retaining its quality, integrity, and professionalism, and not just focusing on profit. A friend's building recommended them to me, and I highly recommend them to you. read more

These people are really good! We bought a 2flat a little over a yr ago and on inspection noticed some repairs that needed to be made to the 8yr old flat roof. My inspector said the roof was installed well but in 8yrs repairs are expected. Prior to closing the original owners called Matthews and they came out to honor their 10yr warranty and make minor repairs prior to bldg changing hands!! I just had them out, today, to get advice on adding more roof vents (at suggestion of inspector) and they explained why they weren't need--nor were new gutters which I thought I needed. It's always good to have an honest opinion. I appreciate the free advice and as I said, I'll call them in five years when they said i may need to consider replacement. Phillip did a great job of communicating and his crew did the entire job in one day and the new roof looks great. I was especially appreciative of how well they cleaned up. Absolute terrible customer service and lack of follow up. Our condo has been waiting for Matthews to come finish our roof work since September 10th! There were 3 main items that needed addressing, and only 1 has been complete. There have been over 10 phone calls made to Matthews to see when our roof would be complete or us asking for an update. No calls returned back and when they answer, it is excuse after excuse. "The weather will be bad" "I am waiting for parts to come in from another vendor" and my most recent favorite "I am sick and unable to come complete it." We are going on 2 months of this project not being complete. We are approaching the winter months when nothing can be done...perfect. Do not under any circumstance- even if it is free- use Matthews Roofing!! Unless you are pulling a prank on someone or want to really piss someone off, in that case recommend Matthews to that person- guarantee they won't talk to you again. read more

My elderly mother's house had a leak from a big rainstorm pouring down water into her bathroom. My brother was unable to find any other roofers to be able to come that day. So I asked a friend in Chicago and she referred me to Matthews roofing. They sent someone to her house within a couple of hours and identified the problem. They also noted that the roof was very old and wasn't done right to begin with. Given the rains, a crew wasn't able to come out for a couple of weeks. They did a great job and even did a couple minor extras. Joe was very responsive and easy to work with. I'd definitely hire again. read more

Being a very busy professional I requested a quote for the evening or weekends. I cannot take time off of work to get a quote during the weekdays. You would think a company that has been operating for so many years would be accommodating to new future customers, but no Dale was not. Their unwillingness to give me a quote has me looking elsewhere. Sad cause I grew up in Chicago looking at their signs on the side of almost every building and I can't even try their services. I hope Empire or Victory auto wreckers in Bensenville doesn't do this to me when I need them. My townhouse (4 units) needed a new roof (flat roof). We received estimates from many, many others, and some appeared to be less expensive. After analyzing our options, we chose Matthews because they readily provided complete information on the materials, the process involved, the excellent warrantee, their certificate of insurance (relieving us of any liability should an accident occur on the job), and additional information demonstrating their knowledge of using proper adhesives that would enable the warrantee. There were no surprises--everything went according to plan, and in two days from the start, our roof was completed. They also did an excellent job of cleanup, as well. They said someone would call me by the end of the day. 6 days later no one has still called. Reliability is critical. I called to schedule and estimate and the guy who answered was polite and took my information. He then said I would have to wait for someone to call back because the scheduling guy was gone for the day. I waited ... and waited ... and waited. I finally called again and the lady told me the quote was passed to a Dan or Dave and that he would call me and she would message him to remind him. Three weeks later and I still have not even received a call. How disheartening especially since I thought this would be a good company because I remember seeing them around when I was a child. I'm moving on ... someone else will get my roof repair and garage roof installation. It really is a shame that you can't even get the courtesy of a return phone call. read more
