Shockingly Unprofessional and a Total Waste of Time I went to see Dr. Farzin just three days ago and this was one of the worst dental experiences I've ever had. He told me I might need a root canal, that I needed a deep cleaning, and that he wanted to send me to an "endodontist" (the specialist who does root canals). I trusted him and even told him I'd go ahead with whatever he recommended. Then out of nowhere, he refused to work on my teeth, said he wouldn't treat me, and tried to dump me off on another office. This is beyond unprofessional -- it's insulting. He wasted my time, my energy, and left me without the care he himself said I needed. I walked out feeling frustrated, confused, and angry. This kind of behavior is unacceptable from any healthcare provider. I will absolutely be filing a complaint with the Dental Board over how I was treated. Wisdom tooth extraction was quick and painless, Dr.Farzin is the best in the business!

I came here for my daughter who is four for a check up. The office was clean and updated, the staff and Dr were very warm and professional. He was very thorough and in the end found cavities that I'm pretty sure the last dentist missed. In the end he referred her to a pediatric dentist. His front office receptionist was so helpful and helping me with my referral. She went above and beyond and called my insurance, and the other office is with me...super super helpful! read more

Would not recommend this dentist. I was assigned this dentist by my insurance company. Scheduled for a teeth cleaning originally, and asked for x-rays as well. The person I understood as Dr. Farzin refused to do the teeth cleaning as to what my insurance covered. Instead he would only do the more expensive deep cleaning, which insurance would not cover, and wanted me to pay for this cleaning 4 times a year. this would cost about $200 each time this time just because I had all crowns. He then claimed I need to replace about 6 crowns, which would have been nearly $5,000, and the insurance company in no way would have paid for any of them without a showing of decay on each one. I still have the x-rays, and after about 20 calls I found a dentist that would do a teeth cleaning without trying to add on services. I saw one other review of this dentist complaining about this same issue where the patient agreed to pay this dentist several thousands of dollars that they felt were unnecessary. In my opinion, this was an unethical process known as upselling, and while it is not officially illegal to my knowledge, it seeks to get the patient initially forced to use their services to obtain more money than for services actually necessary at that time. This dentist promised a written estimate after checking with the insurance company, but I never heard from him. I think he got spooked when I complained to the insurance company. This is especially prevalent when someone mistakenly agrees to an HMO insurance plan, and because the HMO plan does not pay the dentist adequately for most services, and this is a way to increase revenue for the the dentist at the expense of the patient who is asked to trust the dentist. Search google.com with the words "upselling" and "dentist", and you will see that this is a big problem, and one that the insurance companies seem to be okay with. It should be illegal. A prior dentist a year ago with a PPO plan tried the do the same thing, and non stopped asking me for 6 months to come back and pay for those services. I had already paid for x-rays that the HMO plain paid for, and over 15 other dentists in the HMO insurer providers list refused to do a teeth cleaning alone because there was not not enough money in it for them. I got a dentist to do the full deep cleaning for less than $60, and concluded by reviewing my x-rays that there was no decay based problem with my crowns. Unfortunately, until the California Legislature acts to enact laws to stop this unethical upselling practice, the patients are set up to be victims of this where it is buyer's beware. And the insurance companies provide a worthless HMO insurance product that only encourages this practice. Never buy Guardian insurance either. Gene read more

Dr. Farzin has been my Dentist for 20 years- and is now caring for my entire family. He is truly talented, caring and very patient with all my kids. His staff are amazing attributes to his practice and always ensure they have a comfortable visit when they're due for cleanings (and fillings!). My Husband and I have had to get crowns through him over the last few years- and have had absolutely no issues with the work he has done- totally worth it. I'm a trusting person especially when it comes to medical professionals. This was a lesson learned trusting Dr. Farzin and the lies he will push to get the most money out of you. Especially if you are here because you have HMO insurance. Dr. Farzin was friendly, and recommended different services based on my insurance plan. I went ahead with the service he recommended, and while the copay he quoted for crowns and deep clean were quite hefty I thought it would be worth quality work. What he doesn't tell you is that your real copay is much lower, and since this price isn't enough for him the price he is quoting you is out of pocket. When I came in for the deep clean, (which he said I absolutely need prior to wisdom tooth extraction, surprise surprise I actually didn't need it.) the price dropped from 500$ to 100$. Yes this is correct, he was trying to overcharge me by 400$. I have no doubt that if I hadn't paid him 2000$ for crowns at this point, he wouldve charged me 500$. This made me question my copay amounts, and why I paid so much for my crowns. I called the office and they had me come in because only he could explain it. Right. Well it turns out the office couldn't answer my questions because he couldn't either. He couldn't keep his story straight and kept changing it up. He tried saying that my crowns aren't on my plan. He then tried saying that they're not crowns they're veneers. Then he said they're veneer jacket crowns that extend all the way back. I had to do my own research and realized that he never used my insurance and lied to me about the copay because he wasn't going to charge the insurance. HMO plans don't pay out well and so he couldn't put it in. If he admits that he gave me crowns then they are covered by my insurance and the payout to him is much lower than an out of pocket deal. All this would have been fine if he was honest about it. Instead you just feel ripped off and taken advantage of. Plus he lied about needing all this extra work, I just came in for wisdom tooth extraction and he made it so hard to get a referral. It took 4 visits to get a referral. He tried to claim he needed my insurance to approve it. It makes me cringe how naive I was about this. Lesson learned, avoid this place like the plague. I feel bad for anyone who was also ripped off by this crook. read more

SmileMax's doctors lied to me about my teeth and what was needed, tried to push an expensive antibiotic treatment on me and tried to scare me into it. Back in April, I scheduled 2 back-to-back appointments for my husband & I. We went as scheduled and were both seen promptly. No complaints there. I was told I would need extensive work on my teeth, as expected, and they proceeded with a basic cleaning. My husband on the other hand was told he'd need a deep cleaning, and some other dental work. He thought they'd do the deep cleaning the same day, but was told it'd be scheduled for another day, I believe due to waiting on insurance or something to that effect. So, essentially, we left the appointments with the expectation of receiving calls back to get updates on what our insurance would cover, and schedule our next appointments. On May 20th, almost a month later, I called and no one answered. Well, I didn't get a call back until June 24th. Apparently, the receptionist had been on maternity leave and had just returned and begun catching up. Which is fine, but...was there no other receptionist in charge while she was gone? Anyhow, she proceeded to hear my concerns, and was beginning to schedule our appointments but said she would have to call me back. She never called me back. I reached out again on July 8th and twice on the 26th & leaving a voicemail, and still no response. The level of incompetence and unprofessionalism in this office is embarrassing. Using my new Delta Dental insurance plan, I went in as a first-time client for x-rays, cleaning, and an exam. They did the x-rays which were developed as tiny, tiny slides. I haven't seen a dentist use that type for years. Then the dentist came in, tapped like five teeth, blew some air into my mouth, then told me I had no cavities (when I asked about the huge hole in my tooth, he even asked, "where?"). Instead, he told me I needed a "deep cleaning" one that would require my health insurance to pay for antibiotics. Then said we were done. When I asked if I could have a basic cleaning first, he refused to do that. He told me I had to do the deep cleaning because of insurance. So long story short. It's a total scam. No work is actually done, and he's trying to up-sell in order to take your insurance money. Save time and go somewhere else! read more

My 6 year old granddaughter & I went to SMILE MAX DENTAL on 10/10/2017 for the first time; our experience was the best ever! I normally don't take the time to write a negative review, I don't like being that person. I scheduled a basic 'teeth cleaning' almost a week in advance with this office upon seeing how close it was to the apartments that I am currently at, I always schedule ahead because I rarely get days off from work to get tasks and chores done. When I entered the there was nobody at the front desk, "That's strange, maybe they are in the restroom!?", I thought. Instead there were two men working on the electricity in the stucco panel ceiling speaking to each other in Spanish around the corner, they saw me and didn't bother to flag anyone down. Unbeknownst to them, I know Spanish. They were just the electricians and it turns out that the dentist was just in his office the entire time and never came out to check and see if anyone was in the office at opening time. It's now 9:20 and there's still nobody at the front desk and my appointment was at 9, Finally a nurse/receptionist walks through front the door and says "Sorry." and sits down at the front desk. Being late for work is one thing, traffic happens, I get that; I had an appointment though and maybe she could have at least called ahead to the dentist to have him give me the paperwork so that I could get that started while she got to work? "Please fill this one form out please", receptionist says, so I begin paperwork. Completely necessary, I am okay with paperwork. As I begin, the doctor comes to the front of the office finally. Two things are happening while I fill out this form: 1) The nurse/receptionist and dentist and talking amongst themselves "Did you know you had an appointment this morning?". "No" Dentist says. They aren't even trying to be remotely cautious about saying all this in front of me, they must think I am deaf. I am not, in fact. 2) I am being swarmed by the bugs that are in this office, gnats everywhere. I kill a few thinking that there was just one or two in the office, but there was about 30. It wasn't just me either I caught the receptionist trying to swat a few away from her as well. So I finish the first form and she receptionist says "Okay! I just need you to fill these last two forms out, they are really short...", and hands me two forms, with more to fill out than the last. Again, I don't care about doing this paperwork, it is fine with me. This was a minor annoyance. Since I came into this office I hadn't had one good feeling about this experience and it was about to go from bad to worse. I ask the question, "I notice that the electricity might be down, will I still be able to get my cleaning today?" Dentist responds: "Well to be honest with you my electricity is down so today we will do an examination to determine everything that you will need and we can set up a deep cleaning, if you need it, for a later day." Me: "Wait, but today I was scheduled for a basic cleaning? I won't be able to do that?" Dentist: "Well you haven't been to another dentist in a while? We will most likely need to authorize from your insurance and then get confirmation back from them and then schedule you for a deep cleaning!" Me: "But I made an appointment, what if I don't need a deep cleaning? I don't have a lot of spare time to come to the office many times for a basic cleaning. Do you think if I went to a different office I might be able to still get a basic cleaning today?" Dentist: "Hey look, I am trying to help YOU here!" Me: "I had an appointment, I just wanted to do a basic cleaning!" Dentist: "Look if you don't like it you can leave my office!? Get out!" I was LITERALLY being told to leave the office because I wanted to know why I couldn't get my cleaning that day. At that point I was done. Can't deal with it. The worst part of all of this is that it all could have been avoided SO easily if there was even the SLIGHTEST inkling of professionalism. Late for your shift? Call ahead and make the proper arrangements! Electricity is out in the work room? Call your appointments and let them know they will need to reschedule instead of letting them come in for an appointment where nothing will happen. Bugs in the office? CLOSE THE FRONT DOOR AND PUT SOME CITRONELLA IN THE OFFICE OR SOMETHING! Can't uphold your commitment to perform a basic teeth cleaning? BE HONEST AND UPFRONT ABOUT IT AND DON'T TRY TO DANCE AROUND THE ISSUE OR MAKE IT THE FAULT OF YOUR PATIENTS THAT YOUR ELECTRICITY DOESN'T WORK! Sorry, everyone, for the length of this review. Today I went to smilemax dental, the first thing I notice it was that the office was really clean. Second the moment I enter it's was like home, I felt to we'll welcome all the stuffs say hello everyone was really nice. The lady on front help me alot her name it's Bertha robiatti. She's the most wonderful lady, really helpful. She explains everything really good. I came in for a regular check up for my 6 month check. I been to other dentist before and I had experience bad moment. But today was amazing. I really recomment this office. So I've gone through the past 3 managements of this dental establishment, comparing them all I am the happiest I've been with the new DDS Matt G. Farzin. He was to the point on my dental health with zero scam on preventative work. Pretty much your teeth are healthy and lets get your annual clean up done which I was out of there in less than an hour. This is a big deal since I've gone through 4 different dentists in the past 3 years and I have felt scammed by all with "oh you have 8 micro cavities, we need to fix them all" and in fact micro means they can become cavities but are not and could just be tooth discoloration, the honorable thing is to go every 6 months to monitor them and IF they become cavities then do the work otherwise the tooth is being drilled for no reason other than for the dentist to make money off me every 5 years when the filling needs to be replaced or worked on again. So yes super happy with DDS Farzin he was awesome and he has amazing hair too, haha. read more
