"Bar-B-Q" means pulled pork, not chicken. The pork had a strange taste that's tough to describe. It was surprisingly spicy, but again just an odd taste. My husband didn't take but a single bite of it. I tried it and it was gross. My fried chicken was good, but nothing special. Tasted like most other fried chicken. Potato salad and cole slaw were without complaint. Biggest complaint was the wait. 21 minutes went by so we asked if they could check on our order. The gal goes and asked her coworkers, then someone hands her our bag of food. Instead of bringing it to us, she stands there swinging the bag back and forth as she chats with another worker. We finally walked up and asked her if that was our food. She confirmed it was, so we asked for the bag and left. Terrible service, mediocre food overall. I have always walked into a clean restaurant at every location in this chain that I've ever visited. Greeted promptly, the menu admittedly takes a second or two to decipher there are a lot of options. The food is always hot and delicious. The fried chicken is perfectly divine. The fried shrimp if the location still has it I know they've discontinued this at some of their locations was among my favorite. This Smithfield's didn't used to be too bad, but the last couple meals I've had there weren't good. Food has been lukewarm, with an almost stale taste and texture. Fried chicken, shrimp, bbq, fries, hushpuppies...it's pretty bad when the slaw is the best thing on your plate. The food is very good at the Shallotte NC location, but the 5 star SERVICE yesterday was worthy of a review! I have Celiac disease (gluten intolerance). My cashier SAMANTHA was savvy enough to question the gluten-free status of one of the items on my dinner order. She tactfully said that, though I have ordered the item before, she wanted to confirm it's safety for me. KYLE (management) came out to visit me. He gave a masterful, patient, knowledgeable explanation of the gluten-free status of the various items on my dinner order. Sure enough, the one item Samantha questioned could be suspicious. Then, since I was dining in, TONYA, another cashier who appeared to be "assisting / training" Samantha, came to my table TWICE during my meal to check on my dining experience, and to make sure I was comfortable with the information and service I had just experienced. We ordered two snack packs: BBQ sandwiches with coleslaw on the sandwich, fries and a drink. They have a juicy and flavorful BBQ and the coleslaw adds just a bit of crunch and sweetness. What has happened to portion size? We've made a habit of picking up a quick dinner from Smithfield every couple of weeks. Generally, the bar-b-q is tasty and the fried chicken is good. The last 2 times, the side items (slaw, potato salad, fries) were tiny. The first time, We thought they must be running out of sides. Now it's happened twice in a row. We went through the drive-thru at Smithfield's for lunch today. The young lady who took our order (Nyssa) was very professional, patient with us and repeated our order back to us. She then asked us to drive up to the second window to pay for our order and get our food. When we got to the window Tomas greeted us, and again repeated our order to make certain that it was correct. He then gave us our total and we paid. He returned our card and gave us our food. He was very professional in all his interactions with us. He also asked us if we needed any sauces or anything else before giving us our food. When we arrived back at home we had our lunch (barbeque sandwiches). They were delicious!!!!! I generally love Smithfield but the one in Shallotte has really changed. I ordered $35 worth of food and it was AWFUL! The sandwiches were soaking wet and I am still trying to figure out why. They barely had slaw but the the bread was completely soaked. The fries were half cooked and greasy! I always order me. Fries and iced tea to enjoy on my ride home - the fries I could not eat. They were completely cold - i should had stopped then and checked everything - then I could had taken it back. I just honestly have never had issues with a Smithfield before. I was so disappointed! I went to Leland last month and they were so good. I don't know what has happened to Shallotte - I hope the management sees this and turns it around. It was always a favorite of mine to eat at! However what the clown will never be able to do in amazing sweet tea, barbeque chicken, and the best pulled pork with the only real sauce, vinegar based with crushed red pepper flakes.
