I had a friend in town and decided it was time to try the fish I had been hearing about. I had the Tilapia and it was a greasy mess, just awful and very messy to each because the fish is served whole. I would suggest to them that filets would be a better choice. Loved lunch at Smithtown Seafood, Lexington's first sustainable fish restaurant. It's a casual, order-at-the-counter joint but the quality of my fish tacos was top-notch. You grab a table next door at West Sixth Brewery, and the helpful staff brings your meal over to you. Parking wasn't an issue for me as I went at a non-peak time, lucked-up and found a spot on the street, but I can imagine it might be a challenge during busier times. Can't wait to return. I was very impressed with this place. Normally, when a place has tons of hype, I find a way to bring them down a notch, but I could not find a major flaw here. The food was amazing. I had to get the classic Fish and Chips. I went to school in Maine for 3 years, but this competes with all he Fish and Chips and I had there by the Atlantic Ocean. The fish was fried so well (caution: don't come if trying to be healthy...or order something different at least). The fries were simply amazing, but the real star were the hushpuppies. I worked at Long John Silvers for a year...I used to be so sick of Hushpuppies, but this place brought back the love for these things. They were solid, thick, and tasty. The wait time wasn't too bad, and the price is what you would expect for seafood. I paid about $14-$16 after tip, so its not too bad. The fact that this place is attached to West Sixth is just fantastic. Come here, drink beer, eat fish, and be happy. read more

Found Smithtown Seafood on maps and Yelp and stopped in for dinner while out of town. I parked on the street in front of the place. You walk into the West Sixth brewery first, and Smithtown Seafood is off to the side. You can sit at the bar or find a table. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer. You walk over to the counter to order food. A very friendly server will bring your food to your seat. I ordered the chowder and shrimp po' boy and both were excellent. The chowder is full of clams, potatoes and especially great flavor. He po' boy is huge and therefor me almost impossible to eat as a sandwich. The flavor was tremendous but it is messy. The accompanying fries were very good. Bar servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. There are tons of beers to sample. I recommend both Smithtown Seafood and West Sixth highly. I stopped in to Smithtown after my kickball game at Coolavin Park. I have heard amazing things about Smithtown, but have never eaten there despite being at West Sixth for some craft brews numerous times. The reviews lived up to their expectations. I ordered the shrimp and grits and it was amazing especially for a cold, rainy day/evening. The shrimp was perfectly cooked with delicious, cheesy grits underneath. It also came with a delicious sauce that has a bit of a kick to it. I am more sensitive to food with a spicy quality, but this had a perfect balance for the dish. Each bite was a perfect combination of textures with the smoothness of the grits and a bit of crunch from the fried onions. I highly recommend this dish and look forward to trying more of their dishes (my friend got the fish and chips which looked amazing as well). I ate there today. You walk up to the counter, place and pay for your order. They give you a number to display. You then walk right into West 6th Brewing (it's attached with no door), go to the bar and order your beer, then take a seat and display your number. You pay there or run a bar tab. I ordered the scallops, fried oysters, and fried shrimp. That's the beauty of this place. You can order one of their full meals or create your own from the menu. Everything was very good, but the oysters and scallops were amazing. The ginger soy sauce is delish. They have a number of homemade sauces. Good prices and fast service. The home brews are wonderful from West 6th Brewing as well. The Amber and Homestreet Hefeweizen are fantastic. I purchased a six pack of the Amber to go for 10 bucks and a $2 pint glass. They have growlers and mini growlers to go as well. If you are in town...and you like home brewed beer and fried seafood....you must, absolutely must visit this place! read more

The seafood here was so fresh. Everyone raved about their food, another win thanks to yelp (I am the dinner heroine...), and thanks to the awesome folks at smithtown. I loved the daily special Delaware bay oysters, yum. We adored the daily special scallops (blackened) and I was lucky enough to get a bite of the fish and chips, the cod was melt in your mouth delicious. We ordered a variety of things to try. The clam chowder was not very good, looked and tasted like dirty water. The hush puppies were bland. The artichoke fritters were okay, but wouldn't order again. We absolutely LOVED the fried banana peppers rings and have been back just for those and will continue to order them any time we come to West 6th. The rice paper taco was tasty, but would ask for a side of the sauce next time to dip it in our add on top. The beer cheese-Uhh! Fell so short of my expectations. Way too dry-crumbly to be "crackered" proper. Even after performing the balancing act with those globs, the lack of flavor I got from this serving was simply put, an upset and proved not worthy at putting my clean shirt at risk. Unfortunately the Flounder was sold out today. (Monday @ noon? -must have been a busy weekend.) Didn't want catfish or invertebrate filter feeders, so that left me with ordering the FishOTD. Which happened to be Trigger Fish. Okay, this could be an interesting first. Wow- at $18 for each Basket, We were very disappointed at what were were served. (Wow $81.57 for four!) Ordered "Batter Dipped" which ultimately was OVER battered and over browned- nearly burned. Fries were also over cooked and nearly burned. Perhaps this is how they intentionally do it because there were four of these "specials" at our table and all were over cooked the same degree. The Trigger fish- is very mild and quite okay for a fish flesh, but I couldn't keep my old aquarium buddies out of my mind during the munching. Appears neither Smithtown or I can win. Two of the four of us who ordered the beer slaw both found it to be uneatable. Over powering vinegar and perhaps a tinge of the Chinese kimchi fermentation going on? Perhaps this "kimchi" essence is intentional too?= Well, what the hell was I expecting anyway from Beer Slaw? The creamy slaw is "the ticket" side. Bottom line- maybe I come from a place that just doesn't understand what works in Kentucky? Sorry for the two stars Smithtown, but you proved most restaurants won't please every one, every time. Lot of love on Yelp for this addition to the hipster scene at West Sixth, but the food did not live up to the hype for me. I started with a cup of the Maritime Chowder. It was a lima bean and fish stew, and it was way too salty and a bit fishy. One bite and I was done with it. Two adventurous souls at my table also sampled and concurred. It was gross. Our entrees were a little better but not great. The beer battered catfish was ok but a bit greasy and too much breading. Also the fish inside was rubbery. I had the local beef cheeseburger with bacon and white cheddar. I am not a big fan of Kentucky beef, but this burger was good overall. The hand cut fries were tasty, but my portion was small. Will update this ranking if they improve on future visits. I was originally drawn to Smithtown based on pictures of fresh seafood (seared tuna) on their facebook page, but on my visit (Tuesday eve) there was not a fresh fish option. Well tonight was our first time here. It is a very pleasant atmosphere, open and airy. I like how the seafood shop and west 6th brewing share an area. You order your food at seafood shop counter,pay then find a seat in the brewery . You get a number stick to put on table and food is brought to you. As for the food, my wife got fish and chips and I had the Snapper platter. My Snapper was very good as I'm sure it was flown in. Her fish was ok. The fries were too cooked really and the slaw was kind of bland. All were served in very inexpensive paper style tray. Hush puppies too done which happens a lot in Lexington I must say. Her fish was too cooked at least the batter was overdone. Take off the batter and the fish wasn't bad. I have to say it was pricey. $12.99 for hers which did have two pieces of fish and mine $18.99. one piece .In Lexington I can find comparable seafood served on dinnerware and at good price. I'm not saying it was terrible,it wasn't but it was I think average. The atmosphere was nice and it is worth a try. The other menu items seemed nice. If you wanted alcohol you bought it at the brewery. Give it a shot but needs some work. read more

My daughter, a friend and I visited Smithtown on 07/14/2016. I ordered the 'tappers burger', a scallop taco and a catfish taco on rice paper. The burger was cooked to my order, I loved the oysters on top. Even though it disgusted my daughter :-), I love all types of food, and was excited to try out a different hamburger sandwich. The fries were perfect, sprinkled with a kosher or sea and cooked to perfection..not soft on the outside, but soft in the middle. The mix of seafood, bourbon bacon jam, aioli on the hamburger was a taste treat I can't describe. The rice paper that the catfish taco was served on, I can't describe t he crunchy taste of the shell with the fish and condiments. The scallop taco was on a corn tortilla...yum. Just try it, not going to say you will like it, but we loved it all! read more

Love getting Smithtown when at west sixth. They will bring your food to you in the brewery. My favorite menu item is the scallop po boy or shrimp wrap. They also have fried banana peppers that are to die for! Definitely recommend. They have a little bit of something for everyone. It also goes well with beer when in Rome right? read more

Definitely the best beer battered fish I have had in the USA (and gives New Zealand fish and chips a run for their money too!) We were in Lexington for the Rolex 3DE and staying with a friend who suggested Smithtown and West Sixth Brewing as a nice spot for dinner. She was right! I ordered the fish and chips (I think the fish is cod) and my husband had the Beef Wellington burger. My husband's burger was ok. The patty was quite tasty and overall it tasted great. The other fillings weren't super exciting though so it kinda ended up being a nice burger patty in a brioche bun (they were out of croissant buns). The hush puppies that were served with both the burger and the fish and chips were nothing special. However... the fish was perfection! The cod was fresh, light, buttery and melt in your mouth. It had the perfectly light/aromatic flavour of fresh fish without being overpoweringly fishy. The beer batter was sublime. Crispy and melt in the mouth with a fantastic flavour. Cooked right through without being overcooked. A beautiful thick layer of melt in the mouth crispy batter without feeling excessively greasy. Just beautiful! The rest of the meal (fries, hush puppies and coleslaw) was all absolutely fine but nothing special, but it really didn't matter as the fish was the star of the dish! We would definitely go again. Four of us had lunch today, and being our first time, we had high expectations. We were STUNNED at the small portions of Amberjack that we were served. When paying $17 for a fish basket, 4-5 ounces of fish is ridiculous! Even the cod had so much batter that the real amount of fish was tiny. There is more fish in a Long John Silver's basket than here! All 4 of us felt cheated by the price vs portion size. The only reason that this place gets two stars is because the Amberjack tasted good. read more

On my most recent visit to Smithtown (I'm a frequent patron), I got the fish and chips platter, although I almost couldn't force myself to spend the $14. It ended up being way too much food (was given two fish filets but ate only most of one) but was all very delicious and tasted so fresh! Hushpuppies dipped in remoulade are pretty much my favorite things ever, so this was my fave part and i savored the two pups I got for as long as I could. Smithtown Seafood is quite unassuming. Nestled inside The Breadbox, this delightful culinary experience surprises me every time! Entrees I have devoured there are: rice paper fish tacos, lobster poutine, fish nachos, fried catfish. The presentation of each were crisp and precise. My favorite dish has to be the rice paper fish tacos. Fragile with nice crunch- the rice paper shell houses tender fish layered with beautiful vegetables. The sauce that accompanies the entree is a nice finishing touch bringing out each individual flavor note. Damn, just damn. My mouth was very happy. I gave Smithtown a visit for a comfortably late breakfast after a festive Saturday night. Ordering the lobster poutine for brunch was a great decision. I was grateful to discover for only $8, I received hefty portions of real lobster (Yes!) The delectable poutine topped on Smithtown's fries were just delicious. Stopped by West Sixth for a couple of drinks yesterday to get out of the house and enjoy the nice weather. I hadn't had lunch yet so I decided just grab a bite at Smithtown. I typically go with the fish and chips which are phenomenal, but I wasn't that hungry. Looking over the menu, the buffalo catfish bites caught my eye and went with those. Let me tell you, THEY WERE AMAZING! Bite sized fried catfish with an extremely flavorful buffalo sauce, homemade coleslaw, and pickle chips along with a zesty ranch to dip made the perfect midday snack to pair with the West Sixth Cerveza. Turns out they don't have crab cakes on Wednesday. I got fish & chips, my wife got cod. Talk about greasy!!! The fries were inedible. (How do they they do that?!?!?!). My affection for Smithtown has been growing steadily and I now immediately start craving their fish and chips platter on each chilly and rainy day. My family loves West Sixth, so getting to order good food to enjoy in the brewery is a fun option. My kids really miss the rice paper taco that was recently removed from the menu, but there are still some good options, and prices are pretty reasonable for most items (a few seem really high to me). I have had a couple of mishaps here, which is what keeps it from 5 stars: I once ordered the artichoke fritter appetizer and it was awful: a super gummy texture and very little flavor (I threw the whole dish away after 2-3 bites), and they completely forgot/lost my order once so I had to go back to ask about it and it still took quite some time to reach me (on an evening that wasn't terribly busy). They make what is absolutely my favorite fish and chips in town, and I like their partnership with West Sixth so I will keep coming back. read more
