This was by far the best bakery I have ever been to in my life. I really like their food so much I can't wait to eat there again.

What a bummer. We had a crummy experience. After reading so many glowing reviews, I couldn't wait to get my hands on some of these yummy baked goods - but I was waaaaaaay let down. First, let me say that we did NOT go there for breakfast, so maybe it was partially our fault. I assumed, however, that I would get an equally great experience by ordering a cookie or pie or some sort of sweet concoction to munch on as we walked and shopped. My husband and I went in around 2pm on a Saturday. The place was busy and kind of claustrophobic near the counter. The ladies behind the counter didn't look too friendly, either - no smiles, no greeting, no nothing. We ordered one cinnamon stick to split - the thing was HUGE. Total was $3.75 for that thing. We walked outside to get some fresh air, and as I took my first bite, I stopped dead in my tracks. EW. What looked like a soft, yummy pastry loaded with cinnamon was actually just a huge stick of puff pastry (I think) with a tiny bit of cinnamon swirled inside. Not what I expected at all. It felt like I had sawdust in my mouth. My husband reached over and took a bite, and shot me a "what-the-heck-did-I-just-put-in-my-mouth" look. I took another bite, thinking that it might be softer towards the middle of the stick... nope. I was wrong. Still sawdust. We couldn't even eat 1/4 of it, much less the whole thing. We promptly dumped it in the garbage can. Again, maybe we missed out on the true experience by not having breakfast there, but BLECH - after that, I wouldn't go back for breakfast in a billion years. I felt like I wasted $4 and all I have to show for it is a quarter. Bummer. I wanted to like this place, I reeeeeeally did. read more

The breakfast at this restaurant was delicious. There was varieties of foods, and also dessert/Pastries. Also, the waitress was very nice! Apart from the delicious food, the coffee was below par. So surprised that the coffee was so awful and low quality for a Breakfast+Pastries Restaurant. As we were standing in line, waiting to be seated, we noticed that there were multiple flies in the pastries case. I counted about 7 of them in there, and I was disgusted. Although the food was great, the drinks were not so good and it was not very clean. I will still come, and if you are looking for a good place to eat, I would come here. read more

Small charming bakery and sit down breakfast at the shoppes in Smithville. Think country or folk art style. Only about 8-14 tables in the back so sometimes gets a line. Staff is not the friendliest...so we always choose to pick up something sweet and a hot drink to bring over to the gazebo to enjoy - or simply just pick something up to go. The oatmeal raisin cookies and the white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are both delicious. For those who have been to this area, this bakery is part of the old-fashioned, quaint area of Smithville Village. The area is just very unique and perfect for strolls after breakfast or dinner. The location is just a hidden gem from tourist and mostly has locals. The bakery itself has a variety of sweets, from Chocolate croissants to Apple Pies. My favorite are the chocolate croissants, where I can taste that they use real good chocolate in the filling, not those fake syrup chocolates that some bakeries have. They also has a variety of bread that they bake themselves. Baked daily and very fresh, and best of all you can tell they don't put preservatives in the bread because they will start to mold after a few days. In addition to the bakery, this place also has a dine-in area for breakfast/brunch. They have the usual list of breakfast menu items: eggs, pancakes, french toast, and waffles. Their potatoes are truly potatoes, and not the hash brown type, which was a plus. But nothing was really special on the breakfast menu, just your regular breakfast options. No benedicts or eggs in a hole, bummer. But I do like their spicy Italian sausage, that was a small plus on their menu. Nice people with quick service. All-in-all, I'll rate this place for their bakery section (4 stars, good fresh bread, and decent sweets bakery). But for their breakfast dine-in area, I'll rate that in this comment (3 stars, nothing special). read more

I have been here numerous times with no issues. However the last visit will probably be my last. Rudest server who could have cared less that she had a table and argued with me when she got my daughters order wrong. Got a cherry turnover to bring to my husband and got home to find out it had to have been 2-3 days old. Tried contacting the business but got no reply. They have a "day old" pastry wall, which now I feel house items more than a day old since I was sold one for full price. read more

A must when visiting my grandparents in Jersey! We LOVE this place! It's got a very welcoming country, cracker-barrel, at home vibe. The decorations (antiques) keep me entertained while I wait for my food. As you walk to your table you pass by the tantalizing bakery items that seem to be calling out your name! They offer up some of the most delicious tasty sweet treats I've ever had! Their fresh baked bear claws are literally the size of a grizzly bear paw! Yum! Onto the breakfast dishes. Your typical scrambled eggs, breads, breakfast meats and it's all good! Service is always prompt and friendly. Only downside with this place is the one unisex bathroom. I was very disappointed by my recent purchase of cookies and cinnamon rolls at this expensive bakery. I won't buy bakery items from supermarkets due to their use of low quality ingredients. Would rather pay more for better quality. Well, my "butter" cookies were flavorless and stale. Terrible place for breakfast. Service was slow to begin with then after 40 minutes of not receiving our food and watching other tables come in order eat and go I questioned the waitress who provided a lame excuse that the cook was "filling the orders backwards".? Not sure what that even means? When we received our food it was not what we ordered and it was cold. We made several requests for our check after spending 70 minutes in this place we wanted out. I had some cookies made for a bridal shower - bride, groom and starfish (the wedding is in Newport, RI). I sent the woman who would be making them pictures and she said she had never done anything like that before - well, let me tell you - she hit it out of the park! Had breakfast here today. The home fries were burnt, the pancakes were huge but undercooked, the rye raisin toast was inedible. The coffee was awful also. I mentioned all this when paying and they removed the pancakes from the bill. I brought home a dessert to have later and couldn't eat it - the whipped cream tasted like lard. We are in Smithville visiting my in laws for Easter. I needed to pick up a couple of pies to bring for lunch. I read some of the reviews and thought we'd give it a shot. A couple of quick points - this is a really busy joint. Don't expect the waitress to box and ring your bakery purchase. There are bakery assistants available to help you, but you MUST be in line. Interestingly, I watched some of the rudest customers insist on immediate personal service. Wait your turn, lady, we're all in a hurry and they're doing the best they can. Ok, now on to the food. Nicole helped me pick a couple of pies - we boxed a peach pie and an apple pie. Both of which were AMAZING! Just delicious omg... Nicole was quick, courteous and kind. An underrated breakfast spot in the Smithville Village. Shea's gets all the local breakfast acclaim, and rightly so, their food is awesome. If you're looking for the holy grail of breakfast food this isn't your place. But if you want a solid, classic, well-priced breakfast, in a quaint setting with really good pastry options this is your place. Some my favorite dishes are the Belgian waffles and western omelette (or really any of their omelettes are pretty good). For dessert try a cinnamon stick or elephant ear. read more

Such a SHAME having to ask waitress to wipe off our table before putting down paper placemats and silverware, she would not have done it if I had not asked. We then watched her do it again at another table she cleared but did not wipe and another waitress also did this with 2 tables. Birders should know that the Bakery opens at 7 a.m., and is only minutes north on 9 The Brigantine Wildlife Refuge," "Forsythe Wildlife Refuge," I have been feasting on real breakfasts at The Bakery since 1990's at least. The eggs taste like eggs of childhood, and their sausage patties are worthy of a journey. The people who work there are dear, welcoming, even a bit saucy -- they make you feel like a local, even though we drive all the way from Princeton for this experience. The setting goes back to the 1700's, when this was a major stagecoach stop. Locals have given them real signs and real utensils from other centuries, which adorn the walls. Words such as "Victuals" can be read, and the old sign for Jersey Devil Dogs, which used to be present at Smithville Village bring back the past. If you order their French toast, do the half order, because otherwise it's a life supply. They're not open all day -- best to go early. Read the history on the back of the menu, all about sleighing parties and curing sausages in an upstairs room. I'm a Soldier originally from the Jersey shore area who used to eat at the Smithville Bakery with my wife every time we visited home. The food was good but terrible service. The waitress was more interested in talking to her friends who were at the establishment as customers than attending to her own. Very disappointed. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the loaf of Cinnamon Swirl looked absolutely wonderful! However we were sadly disappointed when we got home and tried it. It was hard to cut because the top was so stale and hard and the inside wasn't far behind. I warmed it slightly in the microwave to soften it but it was just too far gone. My family went on a Saturday. We saw the cakes and pastries and they looked delicious. Looks are very deceiving. The strawberry shortcake, cake was so overcooked you needed a knife to cut it. Also the German Black forest was nothing but canned cherries and heavy icing, cake texture was same as shortcake, a brick. We ended up throwing everything away.
