After repeat visits to Smog Express as an Aliso Viejo resident, I simply did not need to look around due to fair price and obvious hard work. Now that I live miles away, shopping became necessary due to the drive. Yelpers have informed me that many smog test stations are charging $50-60 each, and some bad experiences with older vehicles (maybe testers don't like tinkering with necessary setting adjustments?). After looking around, here's my conclusion: drive to Smog Express in AV and even if there is a wait, walk across the street to the Thai Bite restaurant and spend there what I'll save at Smog Express. Down side? Bring cash or debit card so they get all the fee, not the credit card companies. That's fine. Win for me, win for husband-wife team, and win for killer Thai food. We showed up around 4pm without checking first when they closed (oops!), but they took us in right away! The owner and his wife are so kind and helpful. The entire process for our 2 cars took about 20 minutes, and that was while waiting for 3 other people in front of us. I downloaded coupons from an website prior and mentioned them to the owner. He never asked to see them, but gave us the discount anyways. 2 cars (mine an SUV) for $74 which includes everything and certification. These guys are the best. I totally recommend this place. The gentleman helping me out informed me of a 20 minute wait, so I went to grab lunch quickly then returned right on time for my turn. I asked him if I was too late to get my vehicle smog checked. Goes out of his way to make it painless! It's as painless as getting a smog check can be. If you call ahead you can find out if he's busy or not and find the best time to avoid a wait. I have customized cars and he explains the process to get the DMV approval, etc. He even made copies for me for next time so it would be a faster process.
