Short review since I came for a quick smog check. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I originally messaged the business asking when the best time would be to come in since I get off work at 4:30 and the business closes at 5:00.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Luckily I live down the street so it only takes me 10 minutes to get there. I honestly felt like I just paid for the convenience since it's down the street from where I live. $70 is a little too much especially since the place I usually go to is less. The person was curt and rude. I get it...well... kinda...he probably gets the same questions over and over again. I decided to give him the benefit of doubt and headed in which was the wrong call. I submitted a request on yelp for a smog check. I got price estimates from 3 automotive repair shops. One was 40, smog queen was 48 and another was 55. I chose Smog Queen because they were open. The manager answered and stated with cert, cost would be 55. If I can get this done on a holiday and not have my wife come back when she has kids to pick up, that's a bonus. I get to the place and the gentleman initially quoted me $100. I told him the manager Wendy quoted me $55 at a coupon rate. He honored the price because I spoke to the manager. He was fast, efficient and quick about completing the emissions test. My wife's vehicle passed with no issues. He submitted the report to the DMV. I paid and was done in less than 15 mins. read more

Much like oil changes, stations differentiate themselves on making it less painful for the customer; that is how they get repeat business and customer referrals to their friends and neighbors. [Corporate-dictated] Price is $100 & up, way up. Online Coupon saves you $30 (as of 7/2022). So $70 for a standard small modern car. Needless to say, despite just being a one-man shop, there is rarely a line, so if time or a short driving distance is more important than cost, it is great! No customer lobby to sit during the wait, nor something cold to drink available (it was a hot & sunny summer day). Was directed to sit on a plastic folding chair over under a tree by the sidewalk. So not even a quaint little patio area with an umbrella table, some fake potted plants, and a nearby soda machine or convenience store. ...So you do NOT want to go there on a hot, cold, rainy, or windy day, unless you are prepared for it. Thankfully South Bay weather is usually 70's and partly cloudy most of the year. Much cheaper ($55) non-Star place is just across the side street at an auto repair shop, and they have a lobby plus a few much happier guys working there. read more

When I got home, I realized I was supposed to get a Star Smog certification. So I called a Star Smog place and they said I'd have to pay to do it all over again. I called and requested an appointment for and was told no appointment was needed. I showed up with a $30 coupon with a 2015 vehicle and was given the paperwork to sign. At this time I noticed a total fee of $70. I asked if the $30 coupon was applied and he said "yes" and the total cost was $100!!!! I immediately challenged him because I was told it was $60 on the phone. I indicated I was leaving and to kindly return my keys and to please cancel my paperwork. My daughter went there being that it's a female owned business and there was a gentleman who wasn't super helpful nor nice. Simple request she needed a smog test but the onboard computer was showing she needed to add air to her tire and the odometer wasn't showing. Instead of helping my daughter scroll through her car to look for the mileage on the car dash board so she could get her smog done. He said he needed it otherwise he couldn't do the smog which I understand. My daughter isn't the most savvy car person so she was confused and the guy didn't even seem like he wanted to help her. Incredibly rude. I called to ask if it was a good time to come for a test, and in an offended tone told me that there is a 30 min wait and that they take no appointments. Ok, whatever. When I arrived, I approached the technician under the smog sign to check in or something for the smog. Again, with a very offended tone told me it is going to be a 45 min wait and to sit around even without getting any of my info. Here's the scoop--the reviews you're reading are true. If you're going to take your car here, get ready to haggle! I will certainly not be returning to this location again, and due to my hassle of an experience and the price, I cannot recommend this location. I was excited to find that this location was open on Sunday. I had received a coupon from their website for 50% off and a free retest after I requested an appointment on their website; however, when I got there, the worker tried to convince me that I could not receive the 50% off, and I had to pay for a pretest. He was very firm about the need for the pretest, and he would not tell me how much it would cost. When I declined, he told me I would not receive my free retest unless I paid $140. He was trying to scare me into agreeing to the pretest. I declined, and told him my car would certainly pass (even though, in all honesty, my confidence was beginning to dwindle). The worker even tried to convince me that I had to pay extra to receive a "star" smog certification--which I was pretty sure is totally bogus. I assured him that I would not pay extra for anything foolish like that, pointed to the wall on the side of the building that states that they are star certified, and my civic brought its A game and passed the smog check! After much discussion he finally backed down and gave me the 50% off. I left peeved because the coupon was from their own website; I received it when I scheduled an appointment with them. If they're gonna get that upset about it, they shouldn't give it out. Moral of the story is, they are open on Sundays, so if you aren't willing to wait be ready to negotiate! read more
