Smoke & Mirrors is the new hot spot in #navyyard and we can confirm, you should definitely check it out! This spacious rooftop hotel has gorgeous decor, a beautiful view, and really great vibes. Drinks are a little on the pricey side $18-22. We tried the #namesake Smoke & Mirrors and the Hola Adios (sub rum, of course). Weekdays are better to visit, and make reservations if you go on the weekend. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to try the food, but word on the street is that it is good! Great potential and I'll definitely come back in a month or two when the machine is running at full steam. At the top of the most recent tower to dominate that SW skyline the hum of the freeway is ever present reminding you of the energy of the city, just beyond the edge of roof. Gleaming in the distance immediately to the left after entering is the Capitol dome and a spectacular west facing sunset. A throw-back modern bar and sprawling indoor lounge space is bumping Super Bowl Halftime 2022 mixes and a sleek host stand is easy to miss. I was VERY interested in having an outside table to fully adsorb the setting sun on a shockingly warm winter evening, so I made online reservations for 3. After arriving with only 2 people, we were told that because there were only 4-tops outside, we would have to sit inside; negating the point of making reservations. Please do NOT go the path of the want-to-be elite velvet rope establishments. That attitude does not succeed in D.C.. Just sit us at a 4 top. The loss of 2 seats over 1-2 hours over the evening will be adsorbed; especially because over an hour later and 4 drinks deep, the 2 of us left only to see empty 4 tops outside. Do NOT do that. Luckily we DID sit at the bar and were greeted with not only charming and helpful bar staff, but the perfect view for taking in the lounge room. An updated Art Deco look, large couches and small table nooks make the space both open and intimate. The cocktail menu is relatively small and is accessed through a glass coaster with the QR code on it. Bartenders are happy to craft your hearts desire while classical takes on Boulevardier, G&Ts, and mezcal margs dominate the menu. Some start-up hick-ups like staff standing around (and in the walk ways as people try to get by) and key mixing ingredients in absentia (no maraschino liqueur nor Green Chartreuse means no Last Word!). These are all bumps many new establishments hit. With a gorgeous space and rooftop real-estate I think they can go from A-OK to Great review next time! read more

I had only heard great things about Smoke & Mirrors and decided to try it out one Saturday night. Smoke & Mirrors is a rooftop bar, located between Capitol Hill and Navy Yard (across the street from the Whole Foods in Navy Yard). When you first walk into the building you're greeted by a host/hostess who checks to see if you have a reservation (reservations are highly suggested) and once you're checked in, you're directed to the elevator to head up to the rooftop. The environment and ambience is upscale chic and gives you all the feels of Los Angeles (in my opinion). There's indoor seating and a bar as well as outdoor seating and a bar. I opt'd for the rooftop seating so I could get the full experience. I got what everyone referred to as the best seat on the rooftop because my backdrop was the U.S. Capitol Building! There are two fire pits with seats so you're able to sit there as well as at tables. As far as the food, because it's not technically a restaurant there isn't an expansive menu but there are fairly good and seemingly appetizing items to choose from. I had the bacon wrapped chicken breast w/ pesto noodles, grilled broccolini, and pita bread. My meal was cooked to perfection and I was given more than enough food so i ended up taking home leftovers. To drink, I didn't see a cocktail that I wanted to try so I went with my go to and got a glass of Prosecco -- which i enjoyed! The service was okay, it could've been a little more efficient and faster. It was quite a crowd there when i was there so I assume this is what was the cause of the service being fairly slow. When I was first seated the owner came over and introduced himself and I thought that was a great added touch that he was walking around and greeting patrons! New hot rooftop in Navy Yard! While I didn't find any of the cocktails particularly interesting, many of my friends enjoyed the Hola Adios. I hope they add more fruity or sparkling wine based cocktails to the menu in the future. For food we shared the Kale Caesar, beef tartare, spicy tuna, potatoes 71, and crab fondue. Loved the crab and spicy tuna! Wish they had more vegetarian and pescatarian options (again maybe they'll add to the menu in the future?) read more

We came on Labor Day Sunday for drinks before moving on to another location for dinner. We had a reservation and our server was nice but apparently there was only 1 bartender for the whole place. We put in our drink orders right away when the server came to take our order but we waiting like an 45 mins to hour for our drinks. The drinks were ok (for the spendy price), nothing crazy interesting or unique, but overall it was a hugely disappointing experience because of how long it took. The view is decent... about as good as you'll probably get in DC which is not a "tall" city and lacks the "sparkling lights" of skyscrapers around. read more

I would give this place a 3 but I give them a 4 because of the effort I know it takes to create and run such a prestige spot. I came here with my friends as part of our reoccurring exploring the city shenanigans. The place is beautiful and secure. They have a small menu consisting mostly of what I would consider as finger food. The mushroom plate was really good. The duck wings had no seasoning but it was sweet. It was well done but some seasoning would be nice. The brocollini could be better. I didn't like how they dressed it up. I think just plainly sautéed would be better than the sauce they dressed it up with. Overall I enjoyed my experience. The waitress was actually not that attentive. Such a great cocktail lounge in the DMV area. We really liked the drinks and the hors d'oeuvres were OK (nothing too fancy about them) but the drinks are really what shine about this place. Also it's a very beautiful on the inside and outside. Rating one star down because: We did show up a little early to our reservation and was a little bit disappointed that they didn't sit us outside, they said that we couldn't because other people had booked out there but there were so many empty tables. It would've been really nice customer service if they said we could sit out there even if it was for one drink. I came to meet up with some friends that were staying at the Marriott & ordered a tonic water with a garnish. I ended up paying $5 for my tonic water but I can't even get mad because looooook at this place. This is the type of spot that make you feel like money when you step through the doors. I have to say although this was a lovely-looking place, they do not know how to treat new guests. First of all their policies are not clear, I was not able to be seated at all point blan period. Reservations were full and that's ok but when made fool in public by a bartender not so cool. So I came decked out in my expensive clothing and stilettos dripped in Chanel along with my husband who was parking at the time. Keep in mind I am a local celebrity fashionista, model and, event planner scouting out locations for my very successful business and was truly disgusted by the staff. When I attempted to get a seat at the bar that was full the bartender said nothing at the time until I pulled up my seat. I noticed there were 4 women to left of me sitting at the bar who were white and light skinned latinas and I asked why "they" were able to sit. He proceeded to tell me that he knew them because they were regulars and it was ok because he knew what to expect out of them. Well wtf does that mean???? I asked him so what does that mean and he said" you cant sit here." What is this the 50's is this segregation time? How do you know who I am, whats my intention and that I wouldn't have the means to deserve to sit there.... btw I'm rich and I had every intention on promoting this venue to my 15k followers. Sucks for them.....Again I asked why I couldn't sit there if it wasn't allowed I demand that the others be removed from the bar. No can do. My huband then arrived and tried to help me and I was disrescted and yelled at told " find another place to dine" and "I know these people" Well sir bartender a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet" I will never ever dine here after the way I and my husband were treated btw Im black American and he is Asian. This place is BEAUTIFUL I will give them that. The drinks were strong and I think this is the perfect meeting spot for friends after a day at work. The price was fine, nothing was overpriced and I thought it was fair. Now honestly none of the food was THAT good. It wasn't nasty, but I think the ambiance is better than the food and it shouldn't be that way. I would go back for maybe a special, but that would be all. I just felt their menu was more limited than I anticipated. I felt like it was more of a cocktail bar and less of a restaurant. When I asked the waiter for my receipt I got a notification from my bank saying my card was charged and the server looked at me fron the bar with a thumbs up. STILL DID NOT RECEIVE MY BILL. I asked for my bill a second time and the server told me it was closed out and provided me a receipt to sign customer signature (STILL DID NOT RECEIVE BILL). I finally asked a third time and received the bill. The next day, I found that I was charged twice and $20 was added which was not authorized on the receipt I received. The staff and service are TRASH! You stand at the bar with bartenders directly in front of you and they pass over you like you're not even there. I saw this happening to multiple people at the bar. Of course they manage to see & serve their staff members and their friends, who get served drinks without paying a dime.This would be none of my business except for the fact that paying customers were being ignored. Making matters even worse, the bartenders have attitude like they don't want to be there After 18 minutes (we didn't realize that long as we were deep in conversation) standing directly at the bar before being asked our order. NOPE! Not getting my money for that piss poor performance! Shared my experience with a friend who recounted almost the same exact story of her time there, including serving staff members and friends of staff members while ignoring customers at the bar. I have been to Smoke and Mirrors on several occasions and my experience has been fine. However, over the last two weeks, I have tried to make a reservation for a party of 11 for Saturday, August 24, to no avail. I initially attempted to make the reservation online, but was prompted to contact the restaurant directly as the maximum party size for online reservations is 8. The message also indicated that there were reservations available, but it needed to be booked directly with the restaurant. I called multiple times, during their working hours, to speak with someone but no one answers the phone. I submitted an inquiry through their large party booking portal and did not receive a response. On Tuesday, August 20, at approximately 8:45 pm, I went to the restaurant to inquire about the reservation in person. I spoke with the manager on duty (she did not disclose her name to me), who informed me that they were fully committed on Saturday. I expressed to her that it was frustrating as a customer to have to come in person to make a reservation because no one has answered the phone or responded to my inquiry. During this interaction, she became a bit dismissive, telling me that there is a private event that is booked for Saturday that was booked two months ago; so, that's why there were no reservations. When I informed her that on Saturday, August 17, there were still reservations available online to book for parties with 8 people or smaller and that I was still given the message to contact the restaurant directly as reservations for my party size was also available, she responded with, "Well just so you know, we charge a $1,500 table fee for parties larger than 10 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays." While perplexed as to how that information was germane to the conversation, I responded by simply letting her know that the table fee is not a problem, but I want to confirm that there is indeed no way to accommodate my party at this point. She responded by saying, "I'm sorry, but unfortunately we are fully committed so we won't be able to." I thanked her and walked away. I am leaving this review because i find it extremely disappointing and distasteful for a manager/employee of a company to circumvent accountability regarding gaps or glitches in their systems that inconvenience or disregard patrons. Furthermore, redirecting the conversation by bringing up table fees has no relevance to the issue(s) at hand. While mistakes and/or glitches happen, managing them in these kinds of ways does not work to ensure you will attract and maintain consumers. read more

I came with a girlfriend on a Wednesday night and the crowd was not too heavy and the rooftop was beautifully lit with fireplaces and a brilliant skyline. Our service from beginning to end was so hospitable, our server Justice made excellent recommendations and was attentive to our table. We ordered glasses of Prosecco and Chardonnay since the Disaronno was sold out :( we had only starters which all came out promptly and was delicious. Hosted a work happy hour here as they have such a great view and decent-sized bar. Our party was able to make a reservation and were promptly seated by our host who immediately began taking our orders. We ordered different cocktails across the board and none were taken back, so I'm assuming everyone was happy with their drinks. Personally, I ordered the Bold & Beautiful, which is a nice, playful summer beverage and the He Takes a Whiskey Drink, which is more in line with my usual drink order and did not disappoint. It was very difficult and that made it very unattractive and took away from the visits and experience of the establishment, the prices were expensive, the food portions were small. I'll have to come back once they work the opening kinks out. The view is amazing! You get a great view of the Capitol from the outdoor space. The space in general is nice. There is a lot of lounging areas outside with fire pits and the inside is pretty spacious as well. Drinks were very affordable and definitely the cheapest I've seen at any rooftop in the city. Come soon before that changes! Lol Service was super off though. I get they might be overwhelmed so I'll give them a pass on that and I did notice the floor manager trying to help so it's good that he was present. Think service will just come with time. Visited here a few weeks ago on a Wednesday nice and the vibes and ambiance were IT!! Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food was not really good, i tried to order something simple (burger and fries) and the fries tasted old, burger was not that great. While we were there a customer threw up right next to us, nonetheless, the staff cleaned it up quickly. The drinks are pretty strong so i understand why she threw up lol. Smoke & Mirrors is a scenic Navy Yard rooftop bar on top of the SE DC AC Hotel, with a particularly good view of the U.S. Capitol building. Solid, not noteworthy, food and tasty, but not advanced, bar program. Come here for stellar DC views, nice ambiance, and good vibes. Average service even on slow days. This Dan dude just doesn't care about customers. It took us for over an hour to get to this place only got treated this way. We don't even had a change to eat our foods that we already paid for. The service here is utterly poor; it ruins whatever you may gain from the pretty decor. We entered with a large party reservation. Or waitress introduced herself, said she would return with menus and never came back for the next half-hour. At that point, we were rushed to make dinner orders because of the soon-closing of the kitchen. Remind you, we had to go up and ask for the menus ourselves because they never came. The waitress takes our food order on the back of a receipt (where's the standard pen pad??). Then another half-hour goes by without taking our drink orders, at which point many of us went directly to the bar because our waitress was not servicing us appropriately. I tried to wave down a bartender and was shooed away while flashing the long list of receipts she was trying to complete. At the end of the night, we were told we could only split the check 4 ways...for a party of 15 people? This place could learn something from true fine dining establishments. The same technology that creates infinite single checks can split up a party seamlessly. What kind of establishment is this? Where is the restaurant etiquette? For the prices on the menu, you expect an excellent experience all-around but this was not it. It seems someone slapped the highest price they could think of to call themselves "luxurious". It took forever to get served and drinks ended up on the wrong bill.
