This was my first time to visit Smokey Bones. The restaurant was the late afternoon choice of the friend who organized the dinner. The location is in Town Center, sitting on an outparcel of Pembroke Square at the corner of Virginia Beach Boulevard & Independence. Coming from the north, an entrance from Independence & a return exit was easy for the restaurant that fronts to Virginia Beach Boulevard. The ambiance was a mix of chain restaurant seating with barbecue overtones. An ample bar had four televisions overhead, placed for optimal sporting event viewing. This is always a definite plus for me. The booths were comfortable with shorter backs so that the view of the rest of the restaurant wasn't obscured. That I really liked. Due to the time of day, I chose from the Extended Lunch section of the Menu. That was a mistake on my part because the portions were much too small to serve as dinner. I was actually hungry when I left the location, which required me to eat dinner at home in a few hours. I hadn't planned to have to do that. The food itself was good although I had some issues. My choice was the Pulled Pork Platter, which turned out to actually be a plate. The Pulled Pork was good. There was no fat, which ruins a pulled pork entree for me. I ate it as I customarily do, without sauce. The portion was just much too small for the price charged. The Barbecued Baked Beans had a great taste. But the dish had more sauce than beans. It was very soupy. So that, combined with the small portion, left me wishing the dish has the actual feel of eating a bowl of Baked Beans. The Steamed Broccoli was really good. It had the perfect amount of seasoning. The small piece of garlic bread was really good but left me wanting more. My dinner companions all had different chicken iterations. I heard no complaints. But their choices were larger portions, which is a choice I should have made. When I return I'd like to see how the dinner barbecue platter compares to that of the Late Lunch Platter (plate). The second visit should prove a better choice between 3 Stars or 4.

This place was clean and the staff was courtesy. The food wasn't really seasoned that well and the baked beans tasted like they just dumped beans in bbq sauce. We also had the appetizer platter with wings, fried pickle and load nachos ( not pictured) we enjoyed that.

Lots of brown bits in the Caesar Salad.

We had been traveling all day and was in much need of a good dinner. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night. The majority of the patrons were line dancing or drinking at the bar. The 2 star review was mostly food related. The steak was overcooked and not seasoned at all. I had to use some of their table side BBQ sauce to get any flavor out of it. Really disappointing for a "Market Value" steak. The BBQ baked beans were crazy sweet and tasted like BBQ sauce, really sweet. My wife had a baked potato not pictured and it was also covered in BBQ sauce which she could not eat. My daughter in law said the Mac and Cheese had no flavor at all. We were super sad. The staff was very nice but not attentive at all. Once we got our food, we were not visited until the check came. Please ask the chef to SEASON SEASON SEASON. I will more than likely not be going back as I don't live here. Good luck!

They played in my girlfriend food. Very unsatisfied.

look at this! Just ridiculous wasn't even. Busy when we came. Had to order something else.

2.5/5 overall. Weekday lunch at co-worker's request. Walked in and stood at host stand for what felt like an eternity even though there were 2 parties in the place; no greeting, slow to be sat. Menu was easy to navigate with lunch specials; brisket was not a feature item, seemed to be placed as an upsell. Menu prices overall were ok though portions were small. Coworker liked his burger (had pulled pork on it). My chicken breast with broccoli and corn lunch plate was average at best. Server was friendly and asked about the food after it was brought, but failed to provide drink refills.

A "chicken less" chipotle chicken bowl

I ordered a chipotle chicken bowl to go. When I got home, I realized my bowl didn't have any chicken. Seems like someone substituted cucumbers for my chicken.

My family and I decided to spend the last day of our annual trip to Hampton Roads in Virginia Beach, exploring the area and shopping. We all started getting hungry around 2:30 so we decided on an early dinner. After perusing our options on Apple Maps and Yelp, we all settled on trying out Smokey Bones. When we arrived at the building and walked in, we were greeted by a welcoming and clean atmosphere (there was even cleaning supplies left out among guests), but the staff was less than welcoming. We stood at the empty podium for what seemed like a long time. Two employees both looked in our direction then returned to what they were doing, without so much as a verbal greeting. Finally, the bartender approached the podium and asked us how many were in our party. No "hello," "welcome," "sorry for the wait," nothing. She then gathered 5 menus and began to walk away without saying anything else. We assumed that we were meant to follow her, since she didn't verbally ask us to. Halfway between the podium and what would be our table, she stopped escorting us to focus her attention on another person, a door dasher that was there picking up an order. After he got his order and walked out, she returned her focus on us and took us the rest of the way to our table. Once we were seated, the bartender/hostess walked away without saying anything. After the length of time it took for anyone to acknowledge our existence, I decided to start timing things. Despite there only being 3 other parties and a small group of people at the bar in the entire establishment at the time, it took our waitress, Taylor, 10 minutes and 47 seconds to arrive at our table after being seated. To her credit, she was very polite and apologetic for the long wait. Since we had a great deal of time, we were already prepared to order our meals as well as our drinks. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger (without tomatoes, onions, or pickles) with ketchup and mustard, french-fries and a coke. After taking our order, Taylor returned 3 minutes and 23 seconds later to bring us our drinks, but that was the last time anything would move relatively quickly. After receiving our drinks, it took the kitchen, and subsequently Taylor, 37 minutes and 12 seconds to cook and serve our meals. Seriously, almost 40 minutes. My burger arrived without the requested condiments, and the bottle of ketchup on our table was empty. After asking Taylor if I could have some ketchup and mustard, she returned shortly afterwards with them. She also returned with my wife's meal. She placed the meal down on the table in front of me, and I informed her that the meal was my wife's, and Taylor didn't respond. Simply just walked away. The only good thing about my meal was that the burger was cooked thoroughly and well-seasoned. The fries, however, were bland and cold (as expected after sitting for 40 minutes before being served). While waiting for Taylor to bring us our check (another very long wait), I needed to use the restroom, however there was no toilet paper in the only stall in the men's room. My family and I will not be returning to this location, and I hope for your sake that you'll consider another location as well.

Service was foremost on the What's- great-about-this place list! We got greetings as soon as we entered, seemingly every 10 minute checkin from our waitress. Greetings when we left. Love it that we could use our coupons, my friends each got $10 off $25 meal, what a great offer! Check out your flyer in the mail. Food was great. My friends ordered the pork belly pops appetizer, wings, steak and Mac n cheese side. I didn't order anything since I just had a large lunch but my friends shared bag o' donuts - the donuts were warm, the raspberry sauce was too sweet though. The restaurant is large with multiple sections like the bar, multiple main seating areas.

Push pin? Earring?

Look what we found in the blue cheese with our wings. I do not recommend this place.

Banana pudding in ketchup cup for $10 in delivery order.

I paid $10 for this ketchup cup of banana pudding in a delivery. I'm sure they don't do this while you're dining in but they certainly don't mind giving you this when there's nothing you can do about it.

Stopped by for a burger and a beer to drown in my solitude. Had great service. Prompt, attentive and genuine. Only downside was some pretentious guy named Jeff kept whining about the hostess and the service being "special needs" because he couldn't get his group prompt service under 15 minutes on a special holiday. If it wasn't for some derogative guy whining off the bell about how the service wasn't up to par every couple minutes I'd have enjoyed what would've been quite a depressing day for me. Other than that, burger was damn heavenly. Beer was cold and good. Service was grand. Some people just ruin it for others. Great spot, great burger, good beer and good folks. B.W.

The last time I set foot inside their Pleasure House Rd location was at least 10 years ago. I celebrated my birthday there as my friends were kind enough to take me out. It was a Sunday morning and I sought out a place that offered brunch. I noticed 1608 was open and decided to head over, especially since I haven't visited them in ages. When I walked in, I noticed their dining room is dimly lit - much darker than I remember. I was greeted immediately by a kind hostess and she proceeded to sit me at a nearby table and provided me with menus (one food, one alcohol). I took my time looking over the food menu, and in the meantime I ordered a pint of Center of the Universe's Bald Irishman and a bottle of Boylan's Black Cherry soda (they do not have a soda fountain). What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. After my meal, I continued to catch up with him at the bar. His presence made a pleasant experience even more fantastic. I thought I was hungry, so I ordered 2 dishes - Smoked Ham Fried Rice and the Breakfast Burrito. According to Hunter, every item is made fresh in house. After biting into each, you could tell that's true. Both the fried rice and burrito were delicious and boasted lots of flavor. Although I prefer my fried rice a bit simpler (if you give me just garlic fried rice, I am SET), 1608's fried rice (veggies, garlic, soy, basmati rice, 2 runny eggs, smoked ham) had a lot going on, which made for a flavorful dish. I liked the rice and the burrito (Korean style fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cilantro lime, cheddar, pico de gallo) a lot. I didn't finish either because it was a lot of food (I really thought I was hungry, haha). But these leftovers turned into a fantastic dinner later on. 1608 looked clean and organized, although I thought it was a little too dark inside, at least for brunch service. That's not a dealbreaker since everything from the food to the service was as excellent as I remember. I hope to return soon with my mom. Regardless, I'll find my way back eventually. Thank you, 1608 Crafthouse! And great seeing you again, Hunter! JV

They are just south of where Holland Rd. merges into Independence Blvd. My most recent visit here was on April 23, 2026. From the outside of the business, it does stand out a bit with the large name above the entrance. You can definitely see it if you look from Holland Rd. I had seen it too when traveling down that road, but I finally came in for the first time on March 10, 2026 after leaving the Voter Registrar's Office not too far from there. Upon entering, it wasn't too busy yet, but it was a little before 4 pm, so it was still early for the evening dinner rush. The inside of the place definitely has the bar scene vibe with the bar area and televisions showing sports there, with closed captioning on. One of the bartenders said we could find a spot to be seated. My mom and I went to one of the booths available. It was just seconds later that our server came over, welcomed us here, bringing menus over, and introduced herself. The first question is always asking about what to drink. I continue to go with my usual, which is water with lemons, while my mom got Coke. After having some time to look over the menu, when we got our drinks, my mom and I were both ready to order. I decided to go with the Sloppy Joe Samich with Onion Rings as the side item, but subbing Pepper Jack Cheese instead of American Cheese. My mom decided to do an appetizer as the main course, which was the Loaded Nachos Half Size Portion. A little less than 10 minutes later, our food orders came to the table, and they looked really good, and when we went to try it out, they were definitely hot too. The Sloppy Joe Samich ended up being really good and hit the spot for me. The onion rings were good too, and were a bit of an indulgence for me. My mom really liked the Loaded Nachos and that had good flavor to it as well. Our server also told us about various specials they have through the week, so this would warrant future visits for us too. The next few visits would be on Thursdays, as they have a $7 Burger Night Special beginning at 5 pm. For those next visits (including the most recent one, except for the April 6 visit), I would end up getting the Bacon Cheeseburger With Fries (additional cost to change the side item for specials). My mom also did a few types of burgers on these visits, one being the Cowboy Burger. Every time, the burgers came out as expected and hot. The fries were really good too, as I usually do pepper on them instead of salt. There was one additional visit on April 6th, which was a Monday. We came in that day for the Fried Shrimp Basket Special. That one comes with Fried Shrimp and Fries, and is available all day. The shrimp were really good and filling too. Overall, the food, service, atmosphere, and specials have been great here. I really feel like they are a hidden gem. When it comes to sodas, they did carry Coke products, but as of the middle of April 2026, they are now serving Pepsi products. I want to note that there is a 3% order processing fee, likely for anyone paying by a card instead of cash. Even when I have been there at busier times, parking was never an issue. It feels like a family atmosphere too. On the most recent visit, they even stated that they notice us as regulars here now. If you're looking for a different place that serves more than just burgers, this place is worth checking out, as I have not seen a place around yet that has the Sloppy Joe type samich.

The both of us, well three of us if you count the dog, enjoyed our meals. I went with the doggy-style version of the Chicken n Waffles. This take on the classic dish included: a bacon-infused waffle, fried chicken thigh, sausage gravy, candied bacon, and bourbon maple syrup. Overall, I enjoyed the dish with the small exceptions that the batter made the waffle really heavy for my personal tastes. I'm more of a fan of light, fluffy waffles. Unfortunately, I did not know this at the time, but the kitchen puts the syrup on the waffle for you. Personally, I like to add my own syrup because I do not like too much syrup on my waffles (and pancakes). However, those two minor issues did not take away from the dish. Also, the other aspects of the dish made up for those minor inconveniences. My partner ordered the Pongo, which was served with a fried chicken thigh, cheddar biscuit, scrambled egg, sausage gravy, house potatoes. If you are a fan of Bloody Marys, the restaurant has a selection of 4 or 5 interesting Bloody Marys. I went with the Porky's Revenge, which had bacon-infused vodka, Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix and a bacon-dusted rim. Both of us were quite pleased with our selections. Also, come here hungry because the serving sizes are quite large. Because of the large serving sizes, I thought the prices were relatively fair compared to other places the area. Actually, I would change "fair" to "generous". Both of our dishes were about 17 bucks with the 4ish dollar 'doggy style' add on. Generally speaking, our waitress was really on the ball. Although we were sitting outside, she frequently checked in us and was very professional while being funny. Hopefully, we can make another stop here during our next Va. Beach vacation adventure.
