    Cheese steak sandwich
    John C.

They are only open Friday - Sunday so plan accordingly. They are located in the back of the Citizen Public Market in downtown Culver City. The brisket was tender and the cheese steak sandwich was good, but the star of the meal was their cornbread. We were lucky enough to get it fresh from the oven. We are it so fast that I didn't get a picture of it.

Stumbled on this place in citizen market yesterday and they were giving samples of their brisket. One taste and my friend and I were sold. We ordered the loaded brisket nachos, brisket cheesesteak, smoked beans, and cornbread which came to about $60 including tip. The servings were generous and we both agreed the loaded nachos were amazing and a clear winner. Cheesesteak was also good but a bit too heavy for me personally to eat a whole one myself. The smoked beans were actually beans and rice and I didn't find them to have much flavor and would have preferred if it was just beans. They cornbread was solid and they add melted butter on the too which is perfection. Overall will definitely be coming here again and a bbq spot is just what downtown Culver needed for some variety. Important to note they are currently only open Fri-Sun so catch them on the weekends.

I ordered the Brisket cheesesteak. There's lots of meat, sauce, and cheese on the sandwich. It's a decent size which you could easily share with someone. It's one of the vendors inside the Citizen Public Market.

For a small food hall, this place really out did itself! I'm always skeptical of bbq places since Texas because I haven't found anything close to it until I tried Smokey Chance! They have their smoker in the back and from smoker to cutting table, chef cuts it up and serve - it doesn't get better than that! Brisket was soft, juicy, and you can even taste the smokiness in it. We dipped the meat in their bbq sauce and that was delicious too. It didn't overpower the brisket. I guess that's why they named it like so - "Smokey with a chance of bbq" omg genius! Pickled onions and cucumbers were such a nice touch to the palate that I didn't know it would be such a great combo with bbq! We bought drinks and other sides from other stalls but this one was our main entree!

tldr: Solid brisket, great accompaniments. Public Citizen Market is always a treat to visit. I can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu. -- Food The menu here is pretty small - brisket only and you can get a combo plate, loaded nachos, or a sandwich. DineLA special - basically same as Brisket plate but it comes with a bit less meat and with a biscuit :) Potato salad - 4/5 Solid mash, lots of flavor. A bit too much mustard for me though. Brisket - 4/5 All the qualities of a great brisket: fork tender, well rendered, good bark. Lots of great things to say about it. If you like brisket, come here, you'll like this for sure. Pickles - 4/5 More Japanese style pickled cucumber than traditional American dill pickles (which I strongly dislike). They were really tasty and not at all vinegary. As much as I did enjoy them, I am not sure how well it goes with the more traditional American BBQ. Eating it with a chicken rice bowl though, YUM. Chimichurri - 4/5 They recommended the chimichurri as a side for the brisket and it's a great chimichurri. But similar to my note about the pickles, as great as the sauce is by itself, I am not sure I would pair it again with the rest of the meal. Meanwhile, if it was served with some Argentinian asado... I'd probably be drinking this stuff by the gallon. Rice and Beans - 4.5/5 My favorite side (the biscuit is a very close second). If I could buy a 1-2 pounds of it, I would stock it up in my fridge and eat all week long. So much flavor, perfectly cooked. The texture wasn't soft or mushy and I liked the bite. Biscuit - 4.5/5 This place is next door to Go Go Bird and walking distance from Honey's Kettle which have absolutely top-tier biscuits yet this place keeps up. I honestly can't pick a favorite and it's weird to say but if you like biscuits, Culver City is the hands-down best place to get them anywhere in SoCal (RIP All Day Baby in Silver Lake which was biscuit in contention outside of Culver City). -- Service & Experience Friday February 7th at 4PM. Came solo for a quick bite and there was no line so they assembled my food pretty quickly and I was ready to dig in. They were super friendly and we had a nice chit chat while they were preparing the food. -- Ambiance & Parking It's in a food hall with no dedicated seating but you can sit inside, you can sit outside, you can sit on the roof. There's a lot of options here. As for parking, there are many public structures close by. Some have the first hour free then it's like a $1-$2 per hour thereafter with a $12 max. -- Detailed Thought This place was awesome and I really really want to go back soon to try the nachos and sandwich!!

This food was so good! I had the brisket cheese steak and the cornbread with the Calabrian honey butter. I love BBQ. I came here with high expectations and they did not disappoint. The meat was so soft is just melted in my mouth. And the sauce and cheese combo packed such a huge flavor bomb. But what really took it over the edge was the addition of the chimichurri sauce. I often forget about the side sauces. Unfortunately, I did not remember until I was almost done with my sandwich. I wish I would have remembered from the start! The staff is so friendly and they created a great vibe with the Gospel music on Sunday. Not only will I be back but I'm making sure I bring people with me!

    That smoke flavor!

All I can say is...WOW!!! This place did not disappoint, it was so good! We got their specialty, the Brisket Platter, which came with 1/2 lb of their 14-hour smoked brisket, smokey beans (topped with a generous scoop of rice), coleslaw, pickles and pickled red onions. The brisket was amazing, soooo smokey, tender and juicy!!! The meat was brought out from the large smoker in the back when we ordered, and it was served steaming hot. Of the sides, the beans were my favorite because they were also smokey. All of the flavors, including the sides, complemented each other perfectly and I could tell the ingredients were high quality. They have a house BBQ sauce and a house green Chimichurri sauce too. Both sauces were very tasty, but I liked the house BBQ sauce more. They also recommended the Strawberry Vanilla Olipop drink and I loved that as well! Portions were great and definitely worth the price for Texas BBQ. I totally recommend this place and can't wait to go back!

I had the 1/4 lb brisket and it was really tender. I enjoyed it and the sliver of fat was great. It paired well with the bbq sauce. If I were to come back, I'd get more of the brisket. Fills a good niche in citizen public market. The staff were nice and the wait time was very quick (less than 2 minutes).

Smokey Chance BBQ is hands down the best smoked Texas bbq in town! The meat was fall off the bone tender, each bite was delicious and juicy, the aroma of white oak wood infused meat filled the plate, and it was definitely a treat to indulge in. Not to mention the side dishes were to die for, the coleslaw was tangy and crunchy and the Smokey beans and rice was satisfying and scrumptious. The brisket platter was only $26 which I find such a great value for the amount of protein given. The service was spectacular, I received my platter in just a few mins of ordering and the team was so nice and friendly talking about their passion for smoked bbq meats. They even told me that they do catering services as I would love to book them for our next office party. You can try free samples as well before purchase. I will definitely be coming back to Smokey Chance BBQ, they are beyond a 5 out of 5!!

The best smoked brisket in town hands down !!! I finally found the tastiest most tender brisket . So happy

Heard about this place via instagram and decided to head over. My oh my what a great choice for sunday brunch! Ordered the sandwich and the brisket (once I was given a sample the decision was a no brainer). The brisket was smoked to perfection for 14 hours. Str8 up just melted in my mouth. The sides were delicious as well. Chomped down on the sandwich and killed it within minutes. Ive never had such a perfectly balanced meal when it comes to american smoked meats but this guy Jeff who tends to the smoker know what the hell he is doing! Perfect balance of sweetness to saltiness to sourness and home for the win with the umaminess! And as a bonus kicker spiciness which i find a must! Great group of guys working as a team! Definately will be back!

Ribs were the tastiest. Not overdone and slathered with their signature BBQ sauce. While I'm a dry rub person, the sauce was sugary but ok. The brisket was second and then the tri-tip was alright. Overall the beans and slaw sides and the garlic rolls were probably better than the tri-tip and the portions were so tiny for what you pay. So it is these days.... Though I do recall it feeling the same back on the day when I first tried out HC when they opened. They have a variety of brews on tap and happy hour not for the bbq but the sandwiches if you wanna not break the bank. Lots of salads and sandwich options if you wanted to not focus so much on the BBQ. Dining inside is ok. For a Friday night there weren't many people helping out in the front of house. Staff were friendly and it's got a chill vibe; they've got 2 TVs if you wanted to catch a game. Parking is the free valet kind since the shopping center is packed with eateries with little parking. From someone who's had BBQ from other parts of the country... not sure HC is a must have. But it's not a bad option on the west side that doesn't have much BBQ to write home about.

It's not surprising that people don't want to work here anymore. This location used to be one of the best, but that level of excellence is gone--and it doesn't seem like it's coming back. Back in the day, you had to get there early because the place STAYED PACKED, and their ribs were THEE reason to go. They were hands down some of the best ribs I ever had as a kid. They put me on. Fast forward 15-20 years later, and today was my first time coming back since my teenage years. I tried calling ahead to place an order, but couldn't get through. Honestly, that didn't surprise me because Woody's was always busy. I figured it was still the same old Woody's. Then I pulled into the parking lot around 6 PM on a Thursday. Immediately, there was parking available. That alone felt odd. No line. Plenty of parking. Not a single customer inside. That should have been my first sign. We ordered beef ribs, sliced brisket, mac and cheese, and dessert. They were out of the banana pudding, so we settled for peach cobbler. The total was around $50, which isn't bad for dinner for two. The excitement really started to hit when we got home and opened everything up. Unfortunately, that's when reality set in. The mac and cheese was terrible. Completely flavorless, watery, and mushy. The pasta was so overcooked it practically fell apart and blended together like baby food. It tasted old and had absolutely no seasoning or richness whatsoever. First and last time ordering that. Next was the brisket. The slices were gray, dry, and looked like they'd been sitting around for a while. I took one bite and immediately said, "Absolutely not." Another disappointment. But I wasn't too worried yet because I came for one thing: THE RIBS. The flavor was actually still there. The sauce and seasoning reminded me of the Woody's I remembered. BUT THE TEXTURE... A completely different story. The ribs weren't tender, weren't juicy, and definitely weren't falling off the bone. They were tough enough that I found myself working for every bite. At that point, the empty parking lot, empty dining room, and lack of lines made a lot more sense. By the end of the meal, I ended up rinsing the remaining ribs off so my dog could enjoy them as a chew toy. What hurts most isn't the bad meal--it's seeing what was once a legendary BBQ spot become a shadow of what it used to be. I almost wish I hadn't come back because it tarnished some really great childhood memories for me. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but I also believe in being honest. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but based on this experience, Woody's is not the Woody's I remember, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. If it's any consolation, the cobbler was okay. But not worth going out of my way for.
