Maybe it's because I brought it home to go. But everything was a bit dry. We tried the burnt ends special and smoked wings. Good seasoning on the wings though. I got the sample platter which allows 4 meats, 4 sides and two drinks. - Double brisket - Single Tri-tip - Single pulled pork - 2 sides of mac - 2 sides of corn bread - One punch and one tea Every meat we had was legit. Honestly variety is the spice of life and I couldn't say I had a favorite they all were good representations of what they're supposed to be. What I will say is I haven't had a lot of brisket I like, most the time it's dry. I've had Q at Bobby-Q in Phoenix and I actually prefered the Q here. There's more smokey flavor here, better texture, and it's less dry. The flavor is just more intense. The mac is legit... it's really creamy and peppery. The cornbread was a bit dry for me and crumbly. The punch and tea were like mega sweet, it was almost comical. Serving size, we weren't particularly starved but it fed us all easily and there were left overs that were another serving or 2 and there were 3 of us. I had a 2 meat combo with brisket and ribs, greens and potato salad, with a sweet tea. We dined in. The brisket was very good (scooped off most of the sauce). The ribs were tender, but a colder temperature than I would have liked. The Greens were okay, I liked that they didn't have a lot of stems in them. The potato salad was bland. It could have definitely used some more seasoning/salt/pepper/paprika for the taste, and the potato pieces in the salad were huge. I had to break them up with my fork to eat. I have always been curious about this place. It's right next to BK Tacos. It's a bit difficult to miss because there's a giant "Mesquite BBQ" sign written down the side of the building. We finally tried it the other day and it was really good. I tried to 2 meat combo that comes w/ 2 sides. So I got brisket and ribs with corn bread and collard greens. My partner got the brisket sandwich and cornbread. We probably should have gotten the BBQ sauce on the meat itself. We asked for it on the side and I think it kind of took away from the overall experience and flavor. But the meats are so tender. They melt in your mouth. The ribs have this burned exterior and it makes it look appetizing. The collard greens have meat mixed into it, which is interesting. Although you can see the salt crystals on the greens, it doesn't taste salty, which is really nice. And the cornbread portion is huge. Some places give you this itty-bitty piece of bread, not this place. And they don't over-do the butter. You can really enjoy it. The restaurant is really small. It only fits about maybe 20 people, 25 if they squish together or stand. But I would love to return and try the other items on the menu. Highly recommend. And also, all their sides (except the onion rings) are made in-house. read more

This place is such a nice treat and I recommend it to all my friends! I've been here twice to order takeout and have had such great experiences. First of all, just when they answer the phone, the guy who picks up and greets you at the door is so nice!! Such friendly staff. I like to order the ribs and they're so delicious-- they just fall off the bone and the barbecue sauce they put on top is perfect. My partner likes to order the brisket sandwich, and he is always impressed with the flavor. We order fries with our meal and they come out so hot (temperature wise) so you know they're super fresh. Finally, a good bbq place by campus. Prices are reasonable and the portions are just right. Tri tip with horseradish was on point and the collard greens were flavorful. Brisket is on point, too. I want to start off with saying that I am no expert in BBQ, but out take out meal was absolutely lovely. We got the 4 meat platter with 4 sides and we got the turkey sandwich in Rye bread. For me the star was the sandwich. It was absolutely perfect and the turkey had such good flavor. The BBQ was delicious, but being from Tucson born and raised I don't think I'm qualified to say this was the best ever. I was a little disappointed because our brisket was a bit dry, but the delicious BBQ sauce made up for it. I am usually not a big BBQ sauce gal but this BBQ sauce was just delightful not too sweet not too savory just perfect. The customer service was good- it was a bit awkward picking up my food because I felt like i was interrupting the two front of the house gals conversation. However, other than that everyone in the institution had masks and gloves on while preparing the food. When you walk in you have a full view of the kitchen and the chefs cooking. I'm from Kansas City and grew up on barbecue. Smokey Mo is the best barbecue I have had outside of KC and Texas. My only complaint is that the meat is too fatty. The potato salad is outstanding! So is the fried okra; the cornbread is delicious, the ice cream peach cobbler is wonderful , and their lemonade is perfect with barbecue. I have to admit that I prefer my hometown barbecue sauce better, but I think it's just me. We eat or order out from them a couple of times a month. Someday, we'll have to try some of their other dishes, but we always order the same things- they're just so good! read more

We have wanted to try SM for sometime, so yesterday while in the area we stopped in. Given the many 5 star reviews our expectations were high. Those expectations were not met on our visit. While no other reviews have mentioned the practice of asking for a tip before completing either the order or the meal is distasteful. Unfortunately this and similar practices are employed elsewhere today. We both ordered the brisket sandwich with cole slaw and fries as sides. We differed on the meat quality; I liked it while the wife found it overly fatty. The bun was not meant for bbq. The cole slaw was good. My fries bore no resemblance to any picture shown on Yelp. They were a mix of cuts and sizes and some seemed to have beeen frozen, not fresh like we came in for. They were likely the last of several batches, warmed up, with clumps stuck together. Most of my family is from Kansas City and missed their beloved BBQ so I surprised them with Smokey MO's! The catered items were tri-tips, pulled chicken, brisket and sides!! loved the Mac/cheese +heat! They bundled it all up so it was easy for me to travel home with and take out of the car! The brisket sandwich impressed our colleague who was born and raised in Tennessee, and he said it rivaled some of the top BBQ he had in Memphis. The Mac and Cheese was delightful. Tasty and light. Easily the best Mac and Cheese I have had in Tucson. I also had the turkey sandwich later that evening. It was moist and had a great smokey flavor even after I reheated it. I can only imagine how good it was straight from the kitchen. I also had a great interaction with the folks working there. When we first arrived no one greets us and the cashier has an unwelcoming demeanor. It felt like she detested guests and it really made us feel uncomfortable. Despite my gut feeling telling me to run, I decided to stay. The food was not great. I wish it were. The mac n cheese tasted like it was old and heated in the microwave. The meat has a very good flavor but not to overpowering bbq sauce taste so it's just right on sauce. The fries are DELICIOUS and we all enjoyed them.
