Just now remembered to give this place a review for when we went a few months ago. We loved this place so much. Such a hometown, family feel. Everyone was extremely friendly and the food was so good! We ordered breakfast burritos, and even though my boyfriend forgot to mention 'no onions,' they still made him another burrito without onions FREE OF CHARGE. That, to me, is excellent customer service. Not to mention, the apple cider was the best I've ever tasted. I am sad we do not live closer to this awesome restaurant, but will definitely be back any chance we get. read more

My wife and I go to Smokey's often. Mike, the owner and his staff are all great! I get a lot quality food for the money. Meats, veggies and salads are all really good. The meats are really tasty!! This was the first time eating here after a recommendation from someone in the area. We had the special of the evening which was prime rib. It was delicious, tender, flavorful, and the cornbread that came with it was soft and buttery, yum! The spinach salad was fresh and complimented the meal well. The chicken tortilla soup was an afterthought but was the best thing we tried that night. I don't even care for chicken tortilla soup but my friend wanted something warm so I tried some of hers and I wanted a bowl of my own. The vibe is relaxed. I never write yelp reviews but this place needs improvement. The ribs were pretty good but the brisket was so fatty and the flavor of the chicken wasn't my cup of tea. I've been eating at Smokeys kitchen for many years when I travel through Truckee but my meal on 1/27 was not very good. Meat was dry and over sauced. I order chicken and ribs. Was given shredded chicken and two small ribs for $25. The macaroni did not have much flavor. For the amount of money, one would've thought that they would have gotten more than two ribs and a tiny portion of shredded chicken. Please keep in mind that I did not ask for shredded chicken, I asked for chicken. When I question the guy that brought my food to me, he said that's how they do it. My wife's meal was equally unacceptable. Her pulled pork was tasteless and dry. She got a measly two ribs as well. That's is unacceptable. They need major improvement or I may never come here again. In the past I've always left the restaurant satisfied with more food then I can eat. That was not the case this time. read more

This place is awesome. We are in truckee a lot (multiple times a month) and I dont think we have made a trip up here without a stop at Smokey's. I am not a bbq specialist but as a foodie I really enjoy the pulled pork and pulled chicken combos and sandwiches. The kids loooove the Mac-n-cheese and garlic fries. Is it a little slower sometimes because it is small and can get busy, sure...but this is the mountains so I dont worry about it. I really want to like Smokey's as I'm a bbq fan and have a place outside Truckee. However after multiple trips I have to say they are just ok. First the sandwiches are ok. The meat is tender, but has really not much smoke taste. If it was just the meat I would rate them a 3, even a high 3. But the sides are terrible. They rate a zero. Add to that slow service (Slowey's not Smokey's) and you end up with a 2. It took me 40 minutes to get a pulled pork sandwich when the place was empty. The cashier ignored me until I asked if I could be waited on and it was slower after that. I'll go back but when I have a carnivore moment and to sit outside with a beer, but will have to adjust my expectations. read more

Arrived at 8:00pm on a Friday night for dinner. Restaurant was busy, but not packed. We ordered the St. Louis rib combo dinner - about $18. Combo comes with corn bread and two sides. We chose beans and cole slaw. We were given our drinks upon ordering and waited 40 minutes for our meal to arrive. Our Rib combo dinner consisted of 3-1/2 small ribs (the 1/2 was an end mini rib.) and the aforementioned sides. The sides were good - cornbread and beans were hot - slaw was cold. All the sides tasted fine, especially the beans and cornbread. The ribs on the other hand were barely lukewarm - definitely did not come hot off the grill. Our drinks were gone by the time the food came and the ribs were disappointing, both in the amount we were served and the temperature of the meat. For an $18 meal we expected more. On the bright side, the gal working behind the counter was very cheerful and nice. read more

Smokey's is awesome. I've never been disappointed with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I really like their breakfast and it seems like most people just don't have it on their breakfast radar. It's also reasonably priced for breakfast as far as Truckee goes. The sausage, egg, and cheese on a croissant is sooooo good. They make home fries / country potatoes that are awesome - peppers, onions, crispy on the outside, and perfectly spiced. My girlfriend loves their french toast, and they also have great combos. Lunch there's almost always a great special. They even started doing burritos a last year, and they are a nice alternative to your standard Mexican. The beef brisket and pulled pork burritos are awesome and I think only like $7. Dinner is just awesome BBQ. I've had almost everything on their menu and it's all good. I especially like the ribs and brisket. The atmosphere is great. Picnic tables, paper towels, flat screen TV's. Smokey's rocks all day long. read more

This place is the motherfucking shit. The owner, Mike, is the biggest homie I've ever met. We got snowed in at Truckee in that huge snowstorm earlier this Winter and we basically lived there for 4-5 hours. He treated us to a round of beers, made us some awesome barbecued sandwiches, hung out with us, and overall just kicked it with us through the snowstorm. He reminds me of Vince Vaughn in the best possible way. The food was awesome, the decor is very cabin-like (which is perfectly suited for the Truckee off-highway setting), and we basically had a blast. At one point, we asked him if we could take lodging in the restaurant in case the snowstorm continued, and he didn't even skip a beat, he was perfectly alright with it. Smokey's is awesome, and the food is yumtastic. I believe I got a BBQ chicken sandwich with some mac 'n cheese, and ahhhh it was so good. Definitely recommend this place, snowstorm or not. read more

Well first off, most of the reviews were spot on if you are in a hurry, this is not the place for you. Call ahead and ask what the wait time is for food, since you seat and order yourself, the staff was pretty up front with this. We went prepared and brought some reading material to pass the time. After surveying their vast menu we ordered our food, it took about 15-20 minutes before our drinks showed up and another 40 later our food showed. The food was outstanding for the price, we had the beef brisket sandwich, the Cobb salad (ask them to put the brisket on the side), good milkshakes, corn bread and the beef burrito was pretty tasty. Oh and the garlic fries rock your socks off, make sure you are a garlic fan. Wouldn't recommend bring small children just because of the wait, but they do have a toy box to help pass the time. read more

They had more people in the restaurant than they expected or planned for, and the employee (who was very nice) told people when they came in (after a full day of skiing) that the ought to expect to wait 40 minutes for their food. When that came out I waited another 10 minutes (if you think about it pancakes should be the 1st thing out...)for my pancakes that are incredibly huge... My family has been going here for years. Portions are huge and the food is fantastic. The owner is friendly and the staff is as well. The food is more expensive but is great for the portions. The brisket is amazing and the ribs are extremely tender and fall off the bone. The Mac & Cheese is some of the most creamy I have ever had. This is the best BBQ in the area by far. Otherwise, if you're looking for somewhere with a relaxed atmosphere & excellent food, and are OK to splurge a little bit, this IS the place to go! The sweet potato waffle fries w/the chipotle sauce are to die for. Honestly. We also shared the cowboy beans (you'll want your own scrumptious bowl!) A little sweet with a little spice-very flavorful. And the beef brisket and pulled chicken sandwiches- also an A+. Tender, moist and savory BBQ flavor. We went to Smoky's on a recommendation after playing Tahoe Donner Golf Course and boy were we not disappointed!! Three of us ordered the #2 with spareribs, smokey salad, cowboy beans, Mac and cheese, and Cole slaw, plus a side of beef brisket. Top it off with a few good IPAs and voila, Perfection!! Or friend mentioned that the sides were as good if not better than the meat options and it was a dead heat! Fall off the bone ribs, juicy brisket, and each side was phenomenal. The kicker to the entire meal was the cornbread with honey butter. The outside was crispy, the inside was flaky and flavorful, but the honey butter was irresistible! Least to say, we just ordered another entire meal with extra Mac and cheese to bring home for later tonight because it was THAT good. As soon as we stepped in to Smokey's, a young man handed us each a menu. We were told to order at the cash register. The two of us decided we would split the Sampler for $30. This was our mistake...the food would barely satisfy one apetite. It came with two sides (we ordered cole slaw and sweet potato fries) three small pork ribs, one small sausage split down the middle and a mash-up of chicken covered in sauce. The food was flavorful, but small portions. The chicken was very dry. A glass of soda was $3 or a pitcher for $10. We decided on two glasses...no free refills. So we paid $36 for a couple of sodas, one piece of corn bread, two small cups of cole slaw and a few small pieces of meat. We have been to other BBQ joints and Smokey's is by far the worst experience. read more
