Smokin D's is serving some of the best BBQ west of the Mississippi. If you know Memphis in May, this place would be a serious contender. The brisket is tender, smoky, and always disappeares way too fast. The hot link has perfect snap, the chicken is alwayss juicy, and the bao bun (side of pickled onions) is always a standard on all our orders. The sides, oh the sides, mac & cheese and potato salad are exactly what great BBQ sides should be. Don't forget the cornbread muffins either. And special alert: the brisket chili deserves its own spotlight. This is a family-run operation, and it shows. Great people, great food, and a fantastic addition to our side of the city. I have had Smoking D's once before and it was super good. This time, not so great unfortunately. It was the SF Chinatown Nightmarket and they had a booth. Their booth didn't have a line, so we decided to get the BBQ Beef Bun (which i know normally very good). We ordered and took it to go. As we started to walk down Grant Street, we both took bites of our buns and the insides were "ice box cold" Not room temperature but like cold meat inside. Smokin D's BBQ is the best barbecue I've had outside of Texas, and it beats some of the places I've had in Texas too. Meat is excellently seasoned and smoked to perfection, especially the brisket which just melts in the mouth. The tangy and sweet barbecue sauce really adds an extra kick, though it's not entirely necessary since the seasoning is done so well. Still, I practically drank it. The pickles are also delicious. They have a light sweetness to them, which compliments everything else really nicely. The brisket was my favorite. The ribs were great, but the brisket was just so good it shone above all else. The brisket bao is also great (I'm Chinese, so I'm really picky about bao). Love the no-tipping policy, though it confused me at the time. They even gave a little extra brisket and a whole extra rib! So nice! Staff are friendly and welcoming. Only downside perhaps is limited seating if you want to eat there, but I went during the middle of a weekday and there were unclaimed tables available outside. Their brisket bao truly reinvents the classic pork bun. Typically, a pork bun from this area would be too sweet and lack filling. But this brisket bao retains the sweetness of the traditional bao but dials it back a bit and introduces a Smokey and savory meat filling. My favorite was their OG Brisky Bao, I enjoyed the brisket and the bbq sauce in the Bao. The Mac & Cheese was pretty standard and paired well with the smoked brisket. A place in the crowded Irving Street with BBQ that somewhat looks out of place but I saw pictures of their meat and I had to try it. I came on a weekend, midday and it's mostly a place that you order up front and take to go. Took about 20 minutes to order and get all my food. FOOD: Brisket. One of the big reasons I came, but was honestly a bit disappointed. Too sweet of a sauce that over powered everything else. Brisket was fine, but could barely taste it. The bao was also decent but nothing special. I still think this has a lot of potential and it's possible this version was just a bad day, so maybe I'll try again. The first thing I noticed was I didn't smell any bbq at all and the cashier who was very nice, had her long hair down (not tied up). She was handling the food as she was grabbing them to pack up for customers. I didn't see her wash her hands. When I picked up the brisket sandwich to take a bite, a strand of hair was on the outside wrapper. Not sure if it was mine or the cashier's. I ate the sandwich once I received it and it was cold. Interesting take on the Brisky Bao, not our favorite on our recent visit, maybe an off batch? It was a tad too lean and dry. Do like the other items. If I could order anything off the menu, I'd go for the Dino ribs but HANG ON -- does that say $39/lb???!!! Scratch that, let's try a bao instead -- $10 each omg, still really expensive for a bao... It's a solid place for meat. Out of everything we got, this is how I'd rank them from best to worst: Pork Spare Ribs, Brisket Smashburger, Cornbread and then the Mac and Cheese. Pork Spare Ribs have a smokey taste to them and a lot of meat. The Brisket Smashburger was the only brisket item available (June 19th at 11am) and it was good. BBQ sauce came on the side and it was definitely needed. The tatertots that came with the burger were meh. The cornbread at first confused me because of the corn and jalapenos in them but it grows on you. I was surprised with how big it was! The mac and cheese was sadly not a hit--I wouldn't get it again. All in all, a solid place for BBQ. San Francisco is notorious for not having good BBQ so I'm glad to have found a place that offers a variety of items. This place is deserving of the raves and business because of the apparent love & care that the owners and staff put into the quality of the food and their good service. It's got a great small neighborhood feeling in the heart of the mid-Sunset district on Irving Street. We wanted to try the iconic OG Brisket Bao, but we got to the shop too late in the afternoon and they were sold out of that and some other items already. The place is that good. We got the BBQ pulled pork and the beef brisket Mac & cheese for takeout. You can order quantities by the quarter, half or full pound for certain items. The food was very good with just the right amount of smoke, char and seasoning. And it was enough food to fill three adults along with a side salad we added ourselves. The crappy thing about livin' in the City is that the last decade, all the good BBQ spots have changed owners, moved, or whatever. And NOW all the FANTASTIC BBQ spots are in East Bay and basically not in the City lmao. I've seen a couple of social media posts hype up this new BBQ place in my neighborhood, which is unheard of as its dominantly Asian food and decided to give it a try. It's definitely more a takeout/quick spot since they only have a short bar seating for 4 people. I thought the fusion of a Chinese pork bun with American BBQ inside was a really clever concept to appeal to the audience of the Sunset district, but I think they fell short in delivery because I thought the BBQ was way too salty. There was no balance and I need a gallon of water just to get through half the bun. My friend ordered a quarter pound of just the brisket and that at least came with pickled veggies to help cut the saltiness and heaviness of the meat. We've been searching for BBQ spots and found Smokin D's BBQ while yelping. I was in the neighborhood and stopped by to grab some brisket and pork ribs for dinner. It seems they smoke the meat elsewhere? I only saw meat in a large case to be kept warm. I mean, if you want your place to be awesome, you need to smoke them in-house! And it's only a to-go spot since there are no tables for dining in. So you gotta bring your food somewhere else to eat. The lady behind the counter was nice and helpful. OUR PICKS ~ PORK RIBS QUARTER RACK ~ these were tasty and retained moisture but they don't come off the bone like ribs are supposed to. If done correctly, it should fall off the bone! But the meat stuck, so it wasn't cooked long enough. This isn't true bbq. 2/5 1/2 lb BEEF BRISKET ~ more on the lean side so it wasn't at all juicy as we were hoping! And we've had better at hole-in-the-wall joints. Pretty disappointed. For a 1/2 lb, you only get 2 slices for $20. That's $10 for a small slice. Felt ripped off for that amount and price. If it was high quality, juicy brisket made on the spot, then maybe you can charge that much. But it's not! 2/5 Maybe customers are getting sandwiches. Because I don't see real cooking done here. The very positive rating is completely deserved. The service is great and quick (tips are included in pricing). We tried the briskets which were really moist and a thick cut. The smokiness is perfect (tastes excellent with or without BBQ sauce - very good in its own right). The ribs are really smoked nicely BUT not "fall of the bone" as using a dry rub. This makes the ribs slightly firmer but NOT drenched in sauce. You can use the BBQ sauce added as needed. The bao buns are really soft and filled generously. The ambiance is relaxed. The brisket sandwich had an inherent fishy taste that was very unappealing and I threw half of it out and the pulled pork had a nice citrus flavor but nothing smoky . The one thing that was that their buns that are getting so much media noise are only available Friday, Saturday and Sunday but their website does not reflect this at all. I've tried a good variety of BBQ places around the Bay Area, but nothing beats Smokin D's TBH. It's funny because my husband actually saw a YouTube short of this place and really wanted to go. At first, I didn't believe him when he told me the name of this place but I'm glad it exists!! We asked the staff how long they've been there and they've settled on Irving 5-6 months ago so it's still fairly new! This shop is pretty small and is only meant for to-go orders, so I would recommend that if you have a larger party to order what you need to and to find a spot nearby to eat. They do have a bar table set up against the wall, but super hard to grab seats since there's only like 4+ chairs available. When my husband and I got here, we waited in line for I believe 20-30 minutes. There's only 1 cashier and depending on what you order, they have to weigh it out to give a fair price. The line moved slowly, but I didn't mind. When we got to the front of the cashier, some items were out of stock (ex: mostly the ribs), but everything else seemed available. I would recommend also coming here early in case you want to try some hot items. Been hearing about this place from everyone that I had to come to try it. Unfortunately by the time I went there around 2pm a lot of their stuff were sold out so my options were limited! I heard that this place was known for their smoked meats and their Bao-B-Q buns that they offer. I ended up getting the Korean cow boy bao and oh my god that was delicious! I would say that for $9 it is a little overpriced, but still very tasty. We also got the Brisket sandwich and that was super good. The meat was cooked to perfection! Ribs are amazing! Taste is great! I've gone 4 times in 2 months. First time my eyes were Wow! 2nd time Wow! 3rd and 4th time - not so much. Wah wah wah... I always get the 3 piece pork rib. 3rd time I thought it was a fluke with the size of the ribs. They were skinny and small. It was more like a piece and a half worth of meat. Well 4th time is not the charm... it happened again. tiny pieces. I'm so disappointed- I was telling all my friends about this place but now I'm telling them don't go. But kudos to the gal with the piercings- she's super sweet and friendly! Oh their Korean baos are banging so is the corn bread. Get those for sure! read more

I've only had this item here. I'm sure their BBQ is very tasty. But we are talking about a pretty important fusion here. We are doing Bao and BBQ fusion? This should be a bigger deal. Finally able to sample there mythical dino rib, it is one of those items not really offered during the sunset market, but since they have a brick and mortar spot now I was able to guarantee two of their dino ribs for consumption. Also got 6/6 of cowboy baos and korean baos, the baos is their take on porkbun from my understanding, lets just say the knocked it out of the park, these are heavy, flavorful and delicious, overall the Korean bao for me was better then the cowboy, semi sweet with a kick again not your traditional steam bun in any way. The dino rib was good, heavy, tender, i think they may need to offer a spicy sweet bbq sauce or regular oddly dipping in a spicy sweet completes bbq meal for me. Brisket nothing to say here, still delicious still juicy slight smoke taste but delicious as when I first had it The cornbread are fairly large mixed with jalapeno definite must try had 3 to myself during the day lol Definite will be back for more dino and cornbread and pick up the brisket for outings or parties Hats off to the chef definitely if your in the mood for some good bbq this is one of the spots that knock it out the park read more

We ordered bbq for a family gathering at Golden Gate Park. Food was delivered to our location without a hitch. We ordered brisket, chicken, mac and cheese, potato salad, nectarine and goat cheese green salad, and Texas toast. It also came with pickled onions, bbq sauce and pickles. The chicken and brisket were outstanding. The Mac and cheese and nectarine salad were very good. The potato salad was good. The only things that seemed off was there didn't appear to be any salad dressing and the Texas toast was just thick slices of white bread, not actually toasted. Portions were ample and the meat was very flavorful. The brisket was tender and juicy. We had both lean and "fatty" brisket which melted in your mouth. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy, not at all dry. They use dark meat, which we prefer. We probably ordered twice as much food as we needed so people happily took some home.
