It would be well worth your time to spend the few minutes it takes to get to Smokin' Joe's BBQ if you're in the downtown Redding area. We had spent the morning at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park and were now ready for some grub. There seems to be quite a few BBQ joints around, but Smokin' Joe's caught our eye. Just as important as the 4.5 stars for the food, were the comments of how friendly the crew was. True hospitality is an art that can't be taught but is a reflection of the providers desire to develop positive relationships with their guests. We were second in line and while we waited, the order taker came out from behind the counter to hand us menus. When I told her that I was confused because there was a sign for brisket, but brisket was not on the menu. They only offer Brisket on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The sign offered Brisket Sandwiches, Brisket Plates and Brisket plus one other meat Plates. But she also told me that we could buy Brisket by weight if we'd like. Score! We ordered a Rack of Memphis Ribs, a 1/2lb of Juicy Brisket, 1/2-Pint of Cole Slaw and 1/2-Pint of Macaroni Salad. The Ribs came with some Texas Toast. Service was super friendly, quicky and efficient. We knew what we were getting and for the most part, what we got met our expectations. There were a couple of minor hiccups that may have just been a one-off, but certainly nothing that would keep us from returning. The Brisket was not as "Juicy" as we would have liked. We think that it was probably in the smoker a bit too long. Flavor was great. Texture was a little dry at one end. We got four relatively thick slices, and you could feel the difference between one end and the other. Dipping it into the BBQ Sauce helped moisten it but it was still a tad dry. The two salads that we got were good, but not standouts. The Cole Slaw had Raisins, which we like. The Mac Salad had maybe Sage? We know it's an herb that we should recognize but finished the salad still somewhat befuddled. The Texas Toast. Flavor wise, perfect. It was presented in a styro clamshell. We didn't open our food for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, the heat from the toast caused it to steam inside the container making the toast a bit soggy. A suggestion would be to cut a few holes in the corners so the heat can escape and the toast stay crispy. Now, the star of the show. The Memphis Pork Ribs. Perfection! Don't change a thing. Just keep smoking those luscious bones. A beautiful bark on the outside, tender and juicy in the inside. The meat was falling off the bones delicious! No sauce was necessary. Next time we're driving through to Portland, we'll be sure to get another Rack of Ribs, some Chicken, Links and to give that Brisket another try. read more

I love me a pulled pork sandwich, and never noticed how much the right bun can make. We got the smoke stack, a pulled pork sandwich, a kids cheeseburger, fries and onion rings. The pulled pork was so tender and flavorful that you don't need the sauce but the sauce is fantastic so..... you'll want the sauce. My sandwich was matched with a pillowy bun that made the sandwich. The softest ciabatta bun means that the meat doesn't get squished out when you bite. It's sooooo good. The smoke stack is great if you're into combo sandwiches. What struck me is that the chefs at smokin' Joe's understand texture and the way they cut the different meats in the smoke stack within the sandwich make it tastes like a real combo and not just random meats stuffed into a sandwich. It's got a great mouth feel, and the taste... well... it's smokin.... Smokin' Joes is where it's at. We were coming back from Burney Falls (which was closed) and looking for a place to eat that was dog friendly. Undecided about what kind of food the most important was a place that was good with the doggos. It was too hot to sit outside after coming back from a hot walk so we were going to trade off ordering and planned on taking the food to go. After looking at all the options they had I was conflicted. I told the beautiful girl that I was going to order and then go back to the car so my husband can come order because we have the dogs in the car. She tells me to bring the dogs in. I was like, "whaaaaat? I can bring my dogs inside?" Yes. I grabbed the hubs and dogs inside and we ordered up a load of food. Before we could even get our plates, this team was already giving the dogs treats of chopped meat. Everyone was so friendly, staff and customers alike. Such a small little place (only 2 tables inside) but we had the best time. Now for the food: the !! I had the 4 meat combo with a side of sweet potatoes. Husband got the Smoke stack sandwich with garlic fries and a side of macaroni salad and beans. The meat was on point. I loved dipping it in the BBQ sauce. That was fun. Those sweet potatoes are candy man. I have got to figure out how to do this at home. I thoroughly enjoyed the macaroni salad. Oregano in the macaroni salad was a surprise I didn't know I needed in my life. Joe said it was Italian seasoning. That was chef's kiss!! The garlic fries are better than Jack's Urban. The fries were crispy and had all that garlic. YUM!! It's probably a good thing I don't live closer because this place would be my demise. But I'm conflicted because the kindness and friendliness there was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Fall off the bone BBQ with St Louis style ribs this place was a fabulous find in Redding. While reviewing the menu we were alerted to the meal deals. If you have 4+ hungry people this might be the solution for you as it was for us. BBQ filled containers that fed our group of 6 well. Full rack of ribs, Tri tip, pulled pork, chicken, two large sides, garlic bread. This was delicious. Unlimited soda refills and seating inside and outside this little joint was a delicious find. Keep track of hours as we arrived about an hour to closing. Not really an issue b/c the food was prepared quickly and this place is quite popular. The BBQ sauce was delicious too. I have become addicted to the Philly Cheesesteak and always have them add jalapeño and mushroom to mine. Tastier then the Big Kahuna at the chain restaurant. My Husband got wrapped up in the Cheeseburgers and the Smokestack sandwich with BBQ sauce (on the side) Best Burger in town ( he tells me ) They have giant homemade cookies, Oreo brownie cheesecake pieces ( I think), and CHILI, Chili anything, hot dog, burger, etc. ( pretty sure I saw cornbread on the menu as well ) Big ground beef chunks and a delicious recipe, topped with cheese and red onion ( I add Hot Sauce to make it Fiery ) I keep hearing about the Brisket, but haven't ventured over to try that yet. I usually get the Lemonade while I wait, as that is super yum. Have had the mixed Meat plates that come with macaroni, coleslaw , and a few other options. Just excellent , BBQ ( on site , out the back door ) great taste, good portions, and quality. I could go on and on, but you'll want to see for yourself. There is a lot on the Menu that I still haven't had. It's a little more of a take out place imo, but they have two big tables and some bar stool type seating as well. This place is alright. I had the ribs, good coleslaw and the toast that comes with it is dangerously addicting. You can tell that everything is freshly made on site, the ribs have that pink color from the smoke, even the barbecue sauce seems like it was made from scratch. What's confusing for me is the meat has no bark, literally almost no maillard. I'm not sure how to fix this kind of issue, I'm not familiar with the mysteries of smokehouse barbecue. What I got:  Ribeye Steak Sandwich Special - about $21 With drink and side dish. I got Garlic Fries. Food Review: Upon opening this blessed treasure chest, I found myself confronted with an almost uncomfortable portion of Garlic fries. Magnificent start. Then I saw the sandwich under them. It was a whole rib eye steak cooked (in my case I requested and received medium rare) and placed on a large Focaccia Roll and topped with grilled mushrooms and onions. Served with a BBQ sauce to dip. I found it doesn't NEED the BBQ sauce, however every now and then it's nice for a little switch up and palate reset. The meat was grilled to a perfect medium rare as requested and was seasoned nicely. The seasoning wasn't overbearing and you could taste the meat through it, which is a delight. The fries were very nicely coated with speckles of garlic evenly distributed throughout the Fries. Delicious with or without a sauce for dipping. I was able to eat half the sandwich and about 20 of the fries. I took the rest to go and am writing this in anticipation of the coveted retaste. Let me go snap some pics of it now... ...whoops. Ate most of it. One of the images was me taking a bite. Well, one thing led to another... At any rate, I can attest that even hours later it is a delicious Lenno snack. OK, the ambience is a very small interior, or picnic tables by a busy road. Who cares? Super nice people and the pulled pork sandwich is the best food of any kind I have had in a month. Slaw is a nice palate cleansing side. Mango lemonade to wrap it up. I don't get to this side of town much. I need to make a few more excuses to do so around lunchtime. read more

This place was so gross. They talked me into the special that day and the meat was super tough and fatty. The restaurant itself is icky and outdated. All the workers were teenage girls. An elderly man sat right next to me asking me over and over if I enjoyed the food. It was so uncomfortable! I thought that maybe that I just didn't like the cut of meat so I gave it to someone else. Walking up to this restaurant was reminiscent of a 50's style diner, with an intimate small lobby and ample outdoor and shaded seating. First impression: as you walk in the door you're welcomed by family owners greeting and cooking for the customers, the lobby is full and there is music playing in the background. Meanwhile, The most amazing smells fill the room, bringing instant smiles and stomach growls. The menu brought so many great offerings that I had the most difficult time deciding what to order. Yet don't worry! They have samplers with the most popular meats portioned and priced per person! It was so nice to be able to get a sampler but not have to order an $80 meal. Their sides were equally exciting; complete with typical southern offerings like cole slaw and baked beans, potato salad, onion rings, fries, and more. Best part was our very filling, very tasty meal was incredibly reasonable in price without missing a beat on quality. All the meats are very well seasoned but not overly Smokey or salt forward (both are my biggest let downs with some southern food and BBQ offerings). I was blown away by their chicken wings and I'd even venture to say it was my favorite item on my combination plate! Followed closely by their fall of the bone ribs and pulled pork as well as Tri tip. Everything was amazing! I was so happy we made the short drive to experience this gem. I left happy as a clam, skipping to my car- we even had left overs! Dare I say, this is the best BBQ I have EVER experienced. I've lived in the south and grew up in Reno (home of the rib cook off). Absolutely a must if in Redding. Would've loved a more tender brisket but the pulled pork and ribs were delicious. They were so soft our baby demolished three by himself. BBQ baked beans are A+. I'm not a huge review writer, but my goodness does this place deserve a 5 star review! The BBQ was absolutely delicious, and the price point is impossible to beat! The service was fast and every staff member was so nice! The owner was sitting at the table next to us and he was SO kind. He brought us another sauce to try with our brisket and also made sure we didn't leave without trying the coleslaw he has spent years perfecting. I'm not a huge coleslaw fan, but it was actually incredible here. Unfortunately I was just in the area on a road trip, but if I lived closer I would be a regular at Smokin' Joe's BBQ!
