Across the parking lot from Safeway sits a Niu Hawaiian BBQ joint. Ha Ha cool looking tiki hut vibe to order from and super nice staff. There's a handful of small tables inside if you want to dine in. We tried a couple menu items to go to vet the place out. Kahlua Pork and Chicken Katsu -8 Kahlua Pork was tender and flavorful. The Katsu was decent but not as crispy or flavorful as I've had. The macaroni salad was aight... French Fries - 4 - High quality fries but cooked at too low of temperature leaving them greasy and not crispy. Chicken Combo -7 BBQ chicken was cooked very well but was a little plain. It's all about those sauces to make the meal tasty. Not bad Hawaiian BBQ but I've certainly had better. I bet there's some options with that Kahlua Pork that could make a good bite! read more

If you want to go somewhere different, I definitely recommend Niu Hawaiian. Everything I've had from here is delicious, but my all time favorite menu item is their spam musubi. If you've never had that, the best way I can describe it is sushi, but instead of fish, it's fried spam. read more

Service was great but the food wasn't. I've eaten there whenever I was in Redding and I'm was disappointed with the taste of the food. They gave 2 side order containers of teriyaki sauce and it was too watery. I've never seen teriyaki sauce like that it tasted awful I threw them away. When I walked in customers were there waiting for there order. Restaurant was nice, clean and quiet. I usually eat there but I just got through with my shopping and needed to head back home. Next time I'm in Redding I still plan to go there to eat and hope it doesn't disappoint me again. read more

After a long day of hiking, we were too tired to cook nor dine in anywhere, so we called in for a pickup order. We chose the family meal, which made decision making a lot easier. The family meal ($36.99) comes with rice, macaroni salad, and three choices of meat: katsu chicken, bbq chicken, and short ribs. We also added an order of spam musubi ($4.49) for 2 pieces. The order was ready in 15 minutes and it was a super quick transaction. They also provided plates, utensils and a full bag of condiments. I'm not exaggerating when I say a full bag of hot sauce, soy sauce, katsu and teriyaki sauce. This meal was just enough for a family of four. The meats were a bit skimpy though, but still solid. I definitely needed the katsu sauce to give that extra flavor though. The mac salad was a tad bland, but the rice was soft and fluffy. Overall, the spot isn't quite as good as Ono Hawaiian or L&L Hawaiian, but it's a pretty good option in a city like Redding with not that many food options. read more

I ordered the mixed BBQ plate (BBQ ribs, BBQ chicken, BBQ beef) which was $15.99 as of 6/2/23. The BBQ beef was a little dry. The portions were little. The marinade wasn't bad, but the overall impression was average. The BBQ chicken was over cooked and dry. The marinaded flavor was ok. The BBQ ribs were better. Not too fatty, marinated flavor 3.5/5. The meat was a little chewy, not tender as I would expect. The Mac salad was good. The rice was prepared perfectly. The added veggies is a bonus. I did not include pics in this review because I do not want reviewers to think every order looks like what I received. Overall, for Redding, Niu (meaning coconut in Hawaiian) Hawaiian BBQ is decent. Give it a try if you want to sample want locals experience in Hawaii, albeit a bit better. read more

Garlic chicken was great, loco moco taste like frozen type burger pattie but was alright, spam musubis and chicken katsu were great too. Staff were awesome and accommodated people up to the last service minute. Came from Maui to take our son to Simpson University. This will be his local spot away from home for the next 3 years. Niu's Hawaiian BBQ is where you get bang for your buck. The best thing about this place are the massive portions, which can easily be shared amongst 2 people. The menu items are basically the same as any Hawaiian plate lunch place like L&L. We ordered the chicken combo and kalua pork and BBQ chicken combo. The kalua pork had a nice smoky flavor, but I wish it were less dry. Our favorite was the chicken katsu, which was delicious! The biggest disappointment was the BBQ chicken. It was tough and lacked flavor. We tried the katsu and teriyaki sauce, both were watered down. The mac salad was also mushy and didn't have much flavor either. Given Redding isn't a Mecca for food choices, we might be back. If you're craving Hawaiian BBQ, this will do the trick, but bring a big appetite! read more

I love the food at Niu, but when I ate here on Thursday 10/02, the girl at the register had her whole finger in her mouth, picking her teeth. She proceeded to touch the register, the counter, the "door" into the kitchen, the sauces, the plastic cutlery, and the food as she handed it to customers without washing her hands first. It really made me lose my appetite. As someone who has worked in a kitchen and is ServSafe certified, I understand the dangers of doing something like this and it just turned my stomach. I hope the owners talk to their staff about proper food handling. I really want to be able to eat here again but do not see that as a possibility right now after seeing what I saw. read more

Not a bad spot for a Hawaiian fix! Ordered spam musubis (tasty), bbq and katsu chicken, mixed veggies (cut some of the grease), and kal-bi ribs. Katsu was better than the bbq chicken (somewhat dry!), the ribs were good. My mother-in-law normally doesn't like red meat, but I saw her take seconds of the ribs which was surprising! The food was really good! I used to come here all the time and the service was great. Very helpful and easy going. Flavor was great, what fell flat for me was the portions. I ordered the bbq beef regular. This used to last me two meals because it was filling and great portions. This time around, it was about 60% less food and the price went up. I left still mildly hungry which was highly unusual. This could have been a one time thing. But the severe reduction in portions caught me off guard. Great food and service though! read more

The food was decent, not worth it for the price in my opinion. The gentleman taking orders was very polite and happy, but the young woman handing out the to go orders was incredibly rude. It's a small store so I stepped outside after placing my order and came back in after a few minutes to see if my order was ready. I asked the young woman if my order was ready and she looked at me like I had just crashed a car into the front of the building. She proceeded to say "yeah I called that one a couple times already" in a snarky tone and kept that look of annoyance and exasperation on her face as if I had personally ruined her day by stepping outside.
