First time at Odell Craft Barbecue today. I was pleasantly surprised. I am a native Texan by way of Los Angeles and have eaten at a lot of places in California claiming to be barbecue. Bludso's in LA has been the only legitimate bbq I've had in California until now. Who would've thought in Redding of all places, I would find a legitimate bbq place. The brisket was great and their cranberry broccoli salad is FANTASTIC!!! (although $20 for a quart feels a bit pricey for a town of 89k. #justsaying). However; you get what you pay for. EVERYTHING about O'Dell's has been top shelf. We were in Redding recently for scheduled tastings for our daughter & future son-in-law's wedding, and started the dinner tastings at O'Dells. Little did we realize, no one else could compare! From initial email correspondence to picking up the leftovers, our contact Ashley was the model of professionalism, accuracy and kindness. She is a true Brand Ambassador! Upon arrival, we had a reserved table marked & waiting for us, we were greeted like family friends, the team was happy to delay our tasting a bit when some of the party arrived a little later than planned (yours truly), we were treated to a tableside discussion with one of the chefs, were presented with 3 trays of bread & salads, meat choices, sauces and condiments, and then following, a dessert of sampling of their killer lemon bars. After a brief conversation with us, the chef even presented us with a post-wedding snack that he whipped-up for us: barbacoa street tacos! OKAY, let's talk about their food. If you love smoked meats, this is the caterer for you. From the brisket & tri tip to ribs and shredded pork, everything was juicy and delicious, wonderful in their perfect smokiness. The poultry options were equally as great, although we all agreed the meat stole the show. The variety of homemade sauces were equally amazing, we especially loved the espresso bbq (WOWZA). Salad choices: something for everyone- we especially liked their vinegar based slaw and potato salad. The pillowy-soft honey butter rolls are to die for-practically dessert on their own. THEN there were the fresh-made lemon bars. Oo la la - they tasted like a mini lemon meringue pie. Too bad none were leftover for our late-night snacking! All tolled, the overall impression O'Dells team gave us for our kids BIG DAY could not be beat. They answered all our questions and were reassuring in describing their delivery & service the day of wedding (a remote location near McCloud). Through conversation, they proved what creative culinary professionals they are, identified the many local business contacts they work with (some we have also contracted) and THAT FOOD! If you are in the neighborhood on a Thursday or Friday for lunch, stop in. They are working on a restaurant across the street, but just be aware that these guys are POP-U-LAR and sell out pretty quickly on their open days. We had our first visit to Odell Craft BBQ and it definitely won't be our last. The steakhouse burger was outstanding--super tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Texas Ruben, Cornbeef was very tender, juicy and flavorful. Sauce was tangy in comparison to a typical Ruben. Bread was quickly absorbing the juices so difficult to really taste bread qualities. Visually not as appealing as a typical Rye swirl. Slaw was a vinaigrette, fresh however dis not separate itself from any other establishments. The BBq was great, they sure do know how to do their meat. Service was great, friendly and working hard at a lunch rush. The rest of the meal didn't keep up and then the cost. $26 for a small sandwich took away from the over all experience and for me at that price my expectations are higher. Having just moved here from NYC, we were nervous about the "culinary options" here - but we have not been disappointed! We are discovering lots of local BBQ options -- including Odell Craft. We had some guests visiting from out of town and ordered one of their family combos and a few supplements. Luckily for us, they deliver on Fridays and Saturdays. We had the extra special experience of working directly with Judson, their restaurant manager. He was communicative about our delivery time, and made sure our group was well taken care of. The food is on par with NY's finest bbq options, but the service is what stands out. Some of our faves - the honey butter rolls (soft and tasty, especially when consumed fresh), the broccoli salad (amazing), the brisket basically fell apart with the stroke of your fork, and tritip was high quality. We will definitely be calling upon Odells for future bbq fixes -- and will definitely be including them for our family and catering needs. read more

Today was my first visit to Odell Craft BBQ. I decided on a Tri-tip sandwich. It was THE best sandwich I have ever eaten. Not just best BBQ sandwich, best best of all sandwiches. Tender meat, tasty and fabulous and loads of it, falling out of the bun. For the sides I got the broccoli salad and the White Cheddar Mac N Cheese which was just to die for. I immediately text my whole family and suggested they come down and try it. The server was the restaurant manager and he obviously loves his job and the people he serves. I've been to Odell's twice now, and I think they have the best brisket in the North State! Both times, I've gotten the combo plate, and I've tried the brisket, turkey, and ribs. The brisket was perfectly done both times with such a flavorful dry rub - no sauce needed. The turkey was also surprisingly flavorful and tender - not at all dry like many other places I've tried. The ribs were also very good, but I think I enjoyed the turkey even more. I need to try the tri tip next time. As for the sides, I've tried the potato salad and the mac and cheese - both were really good, but the mac and cheese is my favorite. It has a great cheesy flavor without being overly rich like I've had elsewhere. The bread roll is also good, but it tends to get soggy when taken to-go. As for the service, everyone working the counter is genuinely nice and knowledgeable. It's honestly sad how rare that is in food service these days. Shoutout to Judson (sp?) the manager for just being an awesome guy. I've only gotten takeout, but the dining area seems like a nice place to eat and hang out with a classy yet casual ambiance and ample seating. I've traveled through Texas and the south numerous times, and I can say this is on par with the best BBQ I've had in my travels as well. Well done! Just an FYI - brisket is only available on Fridays. I was not impressed. My husband's tri tip was perfect, but my half chicken wasn't cooked all the way through. If the temperature gauge was 165, then the meat tasted uncooked. The BBQ sauce was great. The broccoli salad is very tasty. Service was quick they had some side items that were interesting. Pickled radishes and extra BBQ sauce. You bet I took some of those. There is a bartender for mixed drinks which I'm not used to at a BBQ place. I would have liked craft beer and French roll for a tri tip sandwich and a game to watch on a big screen tv. First time here and it was nothing less than amazing from the moment we walked in until the last second we stepped out of the door. We thought they were sold out of brisket and the Texas twinkies because of their pending online orders but they took the time to reassess because they knew it was our first time and wanted us to at least get the chance to try the goods and we were able to get some brisket and a Texas Twinkie! Then we got pulled pork sandwiches and Mac n cheese. Every single dang bite was full of flavor on every single thing we ordered. Judson came to check on us when we were about finished and gave us the entire run down of how they do things and the plans for the future which made us so excited to keep coming back. He then raved about Mama Odell's desserts, specifically the carrot cake cupcakes but there weren't any BUT they had lemon bars and he had us taste them and MY WORD they were amazing too. No half a** pie crust bottom in these bars, it was short bread cookie crust which is the only way a lemon bar should be made if you ask me! I've gone to multiple BBQ places in Texas and around California because I love BBQ, not the smothered in sauce type of BBQ that hides a quick bbq job....I like my bbq where you can taste the time and smoke that went into every piece of tender meat. We finally got our hands on the brisket from Odell tonight. It was worth the wait. Here's what you need to know: 1. The restaurant is only open on Thursday and Friday. Check hours for seasonal changes. 2. Brisket is only available on Fridays. 3. They WILL sell out hours before closing. That's what kept tripping us up until the very nice staff shared the secret ... 4. Go to the website and place a pre-order. In the comments field say "Dine in" if you want to eat there. Holy Spicoli, we had the burger special with the coleslaw side. WOW...it's pink in the middle but not bloody, and it literally melts in your mouth. Best burger I've had since Lucky Miller's closed. I'm not a fan of vinegar-based coleslaw, but theirs is good. Next time... I'm going to try and get them to make me a sampler plate with the mac, potato salad, some brisket, some tri-tip, turkey, and pulled pork. Service is excellent and fast. We have been getting catering from Odell's for about 4-weeks now and they have been wonderful. We did not get the mac & cheese but it is literally heavenly, 5-stars alone for it. Honey Butter Buns - 8/10 Really strong honey flavor, if you dislike honey don't have it. I highly recommend, pillowy dough with a sticky, sweet glaze on it. Trip-Tip - 7/10 The seasoning is really good, so I prefer the end bits. Cooked well, juicy and not dry at all. Would go well with some sauce, but I don't fw barbecue sauce. Chicken - 6/10 Surprisingly moist and dry? Like canned chicken breast texture somehow (like the ones from costco). The taste isn't bad, I quite enjoy it. The skin is an off color and quite chewy but tastes well. Potato Salad - 7/10 A nice potato salad sauce, works well. The potato is nicely looked and it melds together with the dill, celery, and egg. The egg at first was odd but worked well. Pulled Pork - 4/10 Very sweet Broccoli Salad - 8/10 Very good mouthfeel, crisp broccoli with nice sweet bursts of flavor from the sunflower seeds and dried cranberries. There's a reason this place is rated so highly. We placed a large order online for a family dinner the night before our wedding, and picked it up at the restaurant. Everything was conveniently packaged up and the food was perfect. I can't get enough of the turkey and broccoli salad! The food also got rave reviews from our guests. I would add that the "feeds this many people" estimates that they have for online ordering are fairly accurate, which is great because you can be confident that you'll have enough food for a large party. There is a dining area now and it's simple, a half a dozen tables, open and casual - we loved it and decided to eat there instead of getting it to go. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, 4 ribs and a quarter chicken with pickled cukes, pickled onions, Mac n cheese and potato salad. The meat was all so tender and flavorful, the bbq sauce delish, the sides good. I don't like pickled anything and those cukes were sooooo fresh and good! Loads of food for the price too! Traveling south on the 5 from Oregon and decide we need some lunch. Found Odell Craft BBQ. Only open on Thursday and Friday? It must be good ... and it is!! Better than good, this place is fantastic. Super friendly service and really delicious meats and sides. We had the doggy with us so asked for a park picnic recc. They steered us right.
