When someone asks me about a good breakfast/brunch joint in the WestLA/Santa Monica area, I always point them towards the Harbor...unless i want to eat there that morning, because space is tight and i don't want to lose my seat. While a typical breakfast will run an individual $10-15, that isn't bad considering portions are HUGE, wether it's one of their classic breakfasts, pancakes, omelettes, skillet scrambles, etc. Unlike their more popular yet highly-overrated and pricier neighbor Bread & Porridge (AVOID!!), the breakfast experience is very classicly diner-like and given the line that builds in front of the door on weekend mornings, it's not just a load of hype. In fact its far from hyped and incredibly easy to miss if you don't know where to look (ive driven past it many times myself when trying to park). Despite the packed and cramped main dining area, never fear there is addition outfdoor seatting in the back which is great during summer days. Wonderful neighborhood diner. The food is standard diner fare, and the Zweibel burger is everything a greasy burger should be and more. It's my favorite splurge. The interior is cozy and old fashioned, but be sure to check out the expanded patio options out back as well. Beer is available, and they have crayons for kids. What a gem of a place. I am not sure where to even start. I have lived in Santa Monica for 23 years and cannot believe that I am now just stumbling upon this amazing place. (It's been there for 81 years!) As native New Yorkers, we have always missed the east coast diners there. This is as close as we have come in California. The people! So down to earth and nice. Our waitress Kenesia (sp?) was amazing. Another server, Lisa was also super friendly, as well as the manager Brooke. The food was awesome, the coffee and water kept coming. The staff is super attentive. The food! Giant pancakes, fluffy omelette and delicious corned beef and hash. If you haven't already, then try this place out. You will not be disappointed. Called to order a Philly cheese steak sandwich on their menu that wasn't up to date with pricing, the princess said, "everyone is always asking and doesn't understand since we don't have it but I know it's on the menu"(maybe they should start making it), settled for BLT (can't ever go wrong) but unfortunately for $12 I barely got two and a half prices of bacon with hardly any lettuce or tomato and maybe ten curly fries. I love all things breakfast and boy have I been to plenty o' breakfast spots - but there's a reason why this place has the rating it does and why it doesn't show up on the first page of results when you search breakfast/brunch - Don't come here expecting anything more than mediocracy. Bland, dry blueberry "seasonal" pancakes. Uninteresting/unappetizing scramble. Poor service. Originally, they had a three-star rating (at best) coming, however check this out - - The bill came out to $69. I left a reasonable $8 tip (for poor service - never refilled our waters, came to check in on us, or ask other guests at our table if they wanted something to drink). The waitress "Mel" I believe she said her name was, came back and literally dropped the check and tip back on the table in front of me and said "you left $8 on a $70 bill, I think you made a mistake" and walked away. We are not obligated to even leave a penny and for poor service, $8 felt like a hell of a tip for her. She was expecting more and literally came back to drop the money (not place it down, she dropped it) of me expecting me to give her more money. It's not a diner, it's not a breakfast place, it looks like both. Very confusing. There aren't very many tables so if you come and it looks busy, move on. There is one table for larger parties. I have been here a few times. Jason B. introduced me and some of my girlfriends. The food is very good. Like others have mentioned.. the biscuits and gravy are delicious. I haven't had the pancakes but my friends like them. The eggs Benedict is ok. The hollandaise is lacking. I think a pinch of extra salt and a squeeze of lemon would make it amazing. A 1950s diner that reminded me I'm glad I don't live in the 1950s. The interior is simple but gorgeous - a real classic look that is clean, inviting and chic. Red painted wood, off-white walls and dark green leather. After that the menu is quite simple but inviting too - classics galore, nothing fancy but all sounding like honest good food. But where does it fall-down? The long lines for an average brunch? I wouldn't know - I came for a weekday lunch. For me it fell down at the food. For 10 dollars I got grilled cheese sandwich (which came with fries) and an Arnold Palmer. And that's precisely what I got... nothing but that... a plain boring small grilled cheese sandwich, a bunch of crappy fries and the drink. Just like in the 1950s - no thought for dressings, side salads or any fancy 21st century shit. Is that a good thing? I guess when you're hungover on a saturday morning it could be, but I think I see why we've progressed away from that for the other 6 days a week. Met an old friend for brunch at Snug Harbor today. I have to say, this was THE perfect place to grab some food and catch up. This place is small and cozy with cute little booths. The waitress was super nice and so was the rest of the staff. I ordered the Eggs Florentine and I think that's what I minus the star for. Maybe I'm just not used to the lemon in the hollandaise, but I wasn't really into it. Snug Harbor is what greasy breakfasts are made of - and I mean that in a good way! How can you not love diner food? 3 egg omelette, sides of bacon served up extra crispy, coffee in those diner-type mugs...what more could you ask for? A lot more! I'm a fan of adding a short stack to my omelette-bacon combo, and then counter seating allows you to watch them grill it all up before your eyes. Interestingly, one of the Snug Harbor standouts is actually the Orange Juice - freshly squeezed. You'll pay around $3 per tall glass, but trust me - it's worth every sip. I had my first glass of Snug Harbor OJ after one hell of a night down the street at Q's - yes, those college days. I thought my life force was being poured back into my bloodstream, infiltrating my bones at that very moment. On that day, I racked up nearly a $12 bar tab on OJ alone! But on the flip side, I have it on good authority that they allow you to "bring your own champagne" out back to make mimosas with that very same OJ! Now that's a delicious multi-purpose OJ if I ever tasted one! Note that their wait time can (and will most likely be) horrendous on the weekends. This is a small diner, folks. Hell yeah, this place is great. A friend recommended it to take my parents who were in town and wanted a brunch spot. As a rule of thumb, I don't order things that I can easily cook on my own. Therefore, I rarely go out for brunch/breakfast because I'm pretty skilled in the kitchen. However, this is one of the few places that will put anybody's omelet to shame and make you pleased that you decided to venture out for a tasty brunch. Great little diner at which to nurse a hangover. If you aren't in a rush then my advice is to wait for a table on the back patio... scratch that, don't go to Snug Harbor if you're in a rush, because there is always a wait. It usually goes pretty quickly, but it is a tiny little restaurant. So anyways, back to my point... wait for a seat on the back patio, very quaint and pleasant. They always have some interesting specialties. The quality of ingredients is fine, if not top notch, and things have from time to time come out with more cheese than anything else, but the prices are reasonable and the menu is interesting. I usually go for the chorizo scramble... delicious, but ask them to go light on the cheese... I like cheese as much as the next Joe, but I want some cheese with my eggs and chorizo, not some eggs and chorizo with my cheese... if ya know what I'm sayin. Service is always cheery, which is a bonus in the morning on a weekend... the LAST thing I want to deal with is some bitchy waiter/waitress. You aren't an actor/actress yet dearest... What's all the fuss over Snug Harbor? It's just an overpriced diner that accepts credit cards. Nothing to write home about, and barely enough to write about on Yelp other than to admonish unaware patrons. The outside looks quaint, and I have always wanted to try it. Maybe it was the high expectations I had, but I was easily let down instead. I ordered the Lox Benedict. To start, the English muffin was on the small side, and not toasted evenly. The lox themselves tasted pretty good, and the hollandaise was average, at best. What particularly disappointed me was the side of home fries: undercooked and odd taste. I was just unimpressed. In general, nothing about this dish makes it a cut above the rest. I have definitely had better Lox Benedict elsewhere. My boyfriend ordered a cup of coffee ($3.00, really?), and the biscuits and gravy. The man is a biscuits and gravy afficiando and he commented how weird they tasted. Apparently, there was some blueberry aftertaste. Not sure if that was purposeful, or they were possibly prepared near something blueberry? It just didn't meet the mark. Either way, Rae's Dinner (Pico area near the West LA border) is such a better deal. Yes, it's a diner, but the food is actually good (the bacon rocks) and uber inexpensive ($1 for a cup of coffee, $5.25 for delicious French toast). We've been to Snug Harbor before and had a pretty good experience. Today, things were different. It was a Sunday, primetime brunch hour, so definitely very busy. We waited not too long about 15 minutes to get seated then were escorted to the back patio to a table next to the entrance way. After receiving our drinks and deciding what to order, we waited for over 40 minutes for our food to arrive. And throughout that entire wait period, we kept being passed over. They clearly new they were taking too long but nobody said anything to us and we couldn't get their attention or even make eye contact with them to get someone to tell us what was up. Yet we saw food consistently coming out to everyone else in the back patio. It felt like we were being overlooked. When the food finally came, looking at it on the plate, it was gross. My boyfriend ordered his go-to brunch, pancakes, bacon and eggs. The pancakes were that dull yellow color and hard to the touch. The bacon was overcooked and dry, looked like it had been sitting out. If we were gonna wait that long, why wasn't the bacon fresh? The pancakes were the most disappointing--pancakes and eggs and bacon, very standard, but yet they managed to get it completely wrong. Norms never gets it wrong. Just sayin. I ordered their chorizo Benedict special and it was equally gross but I was so hungry I ate it. The eggs were cold, the english muffin wasn't even a full english muffin it looked like someone cut it off really quickly and it was missing a whole section. The hollandaise sauce was truly disgusting. You couldn't even pour it out from the little cup it was in. It was the consistency of mayonnaise. My boyfriend decided he wasn't gonna eat his. And frankly we were pissed after waiting for so long, with nobody saying a word to us. So we told the waitress what was up and she promptly said she would get her manager. A manager came out and asked us what was the problem and we proceeded to explain. The first thing she very curtly and dismissively said was, "W'e're very busy, it's full here". No shit, it's Sunday. It's busy everywhere for brunch. That's not an excuse. How long have you guys been doing the Sunday brunch thing??? Come on now. We continued to point out how bad the food was. She unapologetically listened then offered to remake the bacon. At that point we just wanted to leave and have it taken off the menu. So she went to take the plates, and grabbed mine too. My boyfriend stopped her cause I was actually eating mine. But in retrospect, I wish I had let her take it cause it was gross. But I was so hungry. And this is where this experience is so maddening! Because you're stuck with a shitty experience no matter how you slice it. You find a place (and btw this was a second choice, the first choice had too long a wait) we park, go in, wait to be seated, wait forever for the food, then it sucks. So, you're gonna either eat it cause you're so hungry or refuse and leave hungry. Either way you will be leaving having wasted your time and feeling angry and ripped off. And that's exactly how we felt. It ended up costing over $20 for two coffees and my shitty half a chorizo Benedict that I didn't finish, but ate cause I was so hungry. They should have comp'd our whole breakfast. We were treated like we were the exception, not the rule. Because there were a bunch of obvious regulars there who were clearly being treated differently then we had been even before we spoke up about our food. Snug Harbor - what an evocative name, right? It sounds like a safe haven, a respite from the world, ready to snuggle you in its bosom and hand-feed you a delicious breakfast or lunch. The atmosphere here does feel very comforting, but I'm sad to say that the food never quite lives up to my expectations. Yesterday I was here for a late lunch. I seemed to remember being happy with the tuna melt, so I ordered that, but it was completely bland despite having the bonus avocado factor. It was basically a sandwich made up of tasteless, colorless components with a little dash of green for color. (Maybe I should have ordered the thing on rye rather than the default white bread, but still, the onus should not be on me to make my food taste like something.) And my yam fries (something I normally adore) just laid there limply in a sad greasy pile. Because of this, I am very leery of ordering it out because people like to try and spice it up. Leave it alone people, it's not suppose to be spiced! There are a row of breakfast/brunch spots in this area on Wilshire Blvd: Bread and Porridge, Brus Wiffles, Blue Daisy, and Snug Harbor. Every single one of them had a 20 minute wait except Snug for a Saturday morning breakfast. We were seated outside and after asking the waitress a few times I found out all the sausages are made with pork casing so I ordered the greek omelette that has feta and olives. Nothing really special, it was very greasy and the toasted wheat bread I received and a layer of butter on it. In today's fast paced world, restaurants need to evolve with their service, produce selection, menu, and decor and Snug Harbor still feels like its still in 1941 when it was founded. No wonder there are long lines out the door for Bread and Porridge and Blue Daisy, times have changed! read more

Went on a Saturday around 10:30am. Pretty crowded but the wait was only about 5-10 mins. Basic breakfast and lunch stuff. Lots of great specials on the little chalkboard that I'd definitely try in the future. I had a super predictable 2 eggs scrambled with bacon, home fries, and an english muffin. Perfect amount of food and reasonable prices. Can't recall what my friend got but it was one of the specials. The OJ is super pulpy (bonus if you like it that way, which I do, but pulp haters would have disliked it a lot). The coffee could be stronger/better. Sat on the back patio. If you love pancakes and you love anything red velvet, the red velvet pancakes are an absolute must. I have been looking for some good pancakes around Santa Monica, and when I saw Snug Harbor had a red velvet pancake I knew I had to try it. The pancakes are extremely rich, this is definitely good red velvet. It really tasted like red velvet cake to be honest, but it did have that slightly fluffy texture you look for in a pancake. The maple cream cheese topping was absolutely on point. Complements the pancakes well and isn't overly sweet. The subtle maple flavor helps enhance the overall flavor of the pancake, it doesn't overwhelm it whatsoever. The place is a quaint, cozy little spot that I can definitely see getting busy during the day. If you can make it towards the morning, that is probably your best bet. The famous burger had fresh hand pressed beef cooked to perfection with chopped iceberg lettuce, fresh tomatoes and grilled onion , cheese with a normal hamburger bun. This was hand made with no precutting or yesterday's prep. Made to order. No precook. It was served hot, fresh with lots of flavor. It was a generous portion, messy but fantastic. My burger was not close to what I described. The meat was cold, precooked and seem to be processed (frozen party) small. Tomato was at day old, no onion to be seen, romaine lettuce (no crunch) and the bun was stale and not a hamburger bun. Cheese was extra. Over $10 bucks. Awful. Better burgers at Carl's. No flavor. Not worth the money. I overheard the table behind me say the same about the fries. Sad. The waitress asked me how I liked it. I told her I did not with the same comment.
