There's just something about smaller business's, It seems to me like they put in more care to every Pizza that's Sent over the counter into your hands. The breadsticks are also very very Good. We ordered our pizzas to go & The food was ready when promised. I had the panzerotti and although not an authentic representation, very tasty. Everyone else was very satisfied with their pizza and the gluten free pizza was said to be a favorite so far. So Italian is a great family owned and family friendly Italian restaurant on Main Street/Crawfordsville Road. Decent size with lots of large tables for groups and outdoor seating when weather permits. Orders are placed at the counter and delivered to your table or order carryout. Our early lunch was terrific, timely, with great service. They have a breakfast menu as well as lunch/dinner menu along with daily specials. Eggplant lasagna or Homemade Gnocchi was calling my name after seeing the specials delivered but we had already ordered. Full Italian menu from pizza, sandwiches, spaghetti, salads, stuffed breadsticks and more. Three types of 12" breakfast pizza's are available or pizza by the slice. I highly recommend the Morning Pizza with bacon, ham, scrambled eggs, mozzarella and provolone cheese. Absolutely wonderful, cooked perfectly with a nice balance of ingredients to the tender crust. Our starter was Strawberry Delight Crepes with strawberry fruit glaze and Nutella topped with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce on homemade crepes. I know, starter?!! The lunch combos offered the most variety for the dollar. Inside is cute, counter-style cafe. Order at counter, seat yourself, served by staff, clear your own table. My opinion of the food will differ from most Midwest Americans. I was born in Naples, Italy and this stuff is NOT local American diner's version of Italian. This is homemade, cafe-style Italian food. Loved the pasta menu - you can choose between 4 different pastas and 9 different sauce options. The Amaticciana sauce is very authentic - I wish there'd been more. Would have been fun to have farfalle as a pasta option, but enjoyed my capellini (angel hair). Pizza slice had a good, crisp crust & certainly was NOT packaged. Nice sauce & cheese. Would prefer the sausage be pulled, uneven bits instead of perfectly rolled little balls. This gives the poor impression of packaged pizza sausage. Tomato basil soup is thick and very fresh. This is a great little Italian restaurant! They have an extensive menu posted on the wall, and there are friendly employees ready to take your order at the counter. You can either get your order "to-go" or choose a table or booth to have it brought out to you. I did not see any pesto option for pasta on the menu, so I asked the man at the register if they had it. They did, indeed, have pesto, so that it what I ordered. I will say it was some of the best I've had! I would highly recommend getting it with the salad and bread. The salad seemed fresh and the bread was OUTSTANDING! It was warm, moist, and delicious. Pretty simple, at least that's what I thought. My slice of pizza was messed up twice, and no one bothered to let me know. I waited quite a while, then went to the counter. The girl told me the pepperoni slid to one side while cooking, so they were making me another. When they finally brought me a piece, it wasn't what I ordered. Don't ever come with a large group. They simply cannot handle large groups. For some reason our waitress took each order individually, then would walk away from the table, place the order at the counter and come back to the next person. Well I was shopping on New Year's Day and lunchtime came. Drove by quite a few places but most were closed. Luckily So Italian was open. I looked at the menu board and saw they also have several lunch specials ie pick two items and get a drink as well. Looked like a good deal. The soup that day was tomato basil. I picked the half sandwich soup option. The sandwich was a bit smaller than I would have liked, but with the soup I was satisfied with the two items. They have several sandwich choices as well. The bread was quite good. But in reality the place is best know for pizza and luckily my son has been eating non stop so I had them make a large pepperoni mushroom pie. There crust is truly outstanding. Chewed but light. The cheese is a good quality tasty mix. Toppings fairly generous without being overdone. Sauce just right. Keep in mind these are thin hand tossed pizzas so if you want a different kind they mainly offer those. Albeit as it was winter so I ate inside, but they do offer outside tables for dining as well. My family loved the pizza. The crust is fresh and delicious. The sub was an alternative to the pizza, (l am lactose intolerant). I was able to order the sub without cheese. I made a discovery that makes So Italian's pizza acceptable ... almost. After not finishing the pizza (in part because I over-ordered, in part because it wasn't worth stuffing my face with crap), I took a couple slices home in a box. My figuring was that I could give it to that homeless guy I always see at the interstate exit ramp. though I eventually decided against this because even hungry people have standards and deserve to be treated with dignity. So, after a long drive home, sitting in the near-freezing trunk, the pizza made its way to my refrigerator. Fast forward two days: It's cold, I'm hungry, and I've been snowed in by a blizzard. In an act of desperation, I open my fridge and see those two slices of pizza -- looking as bad as ever. I sprinkled them with a little water, put them on a sheet of tin foil, and broiled them in a toaster oven for about five minutes. The difference was extraordinary! Somehow, my home remedy corrected for the pizza's shortcomings -- a few days in the fridge dried out the once-soggy crust, and a few sprinkles of water and reheating melted the cheese to an acceptable level. Does it make So Italian worth returning to? No. But if you make the same mistake I did and go there anyway, know that all isn't lost. Freezing and reheating makes their pizza every bit as good as the frozen pizza you get at the grocery store. read more

I really, really, really wanted to like So Italian. Their prices are very low and it's a local family-owned restaurant in a place that doesn't have many. Unfortunately I just can't. Their food was sub-par at best. The pizza I got was just alright, and the lasagna my husband got was an overweight, heavy, greasy mess without much flavor. The sandwiches the other people in our party got were boring. No one finished their food or took any leftovers home. The cheese-covered breadsticks were good but that's the only thing I had a positive reaction to. Besides the food, the service was bad as well. We were in the middle of ordering (up at the counter, there's no waiter service despite the place being tiny) and they got a delivery phone call, instead of finishing taking our order and going back to the phone call, they took the delivery order, which took 10 minutes. Decided to try the local place that people in Bburg seem to like. I am very positive going in....I want to help a local business succeed, and I want to like it. Right off, I am putt off, by the fact that I walk up to a counter to order. I don't do that. Three of us ordered caprese salad, 16" So Veggie Stuffed Pizza, Chicken marsala and a house salad. We went to find a table. I sat down in a booth, and my rear end landed sharply on a piece of the bench's framework. Nowhere on the bench could I avoid this uncomfortable feature. The three of us are just chatting, wating for our dinner, when 4 Brownsburg PD sat behind us, radios on full volume, disturbing our chat. Cannot blame the establishment on this faux pas. The caprese and house salads are delivered. Caprese without fresh basil. Unripe tomatoes. Well, there was a basil paste. What??? How embarrassing to serve that. The house salad had some variety on it, but the red onions were very strong. The chicken marsala was delivered with a warning that it was very hot. While my son ate his salad, the dish cooled for about 5 minutes. He burned his lip on this hot, tasteless dish. There was very little chicken, 3 mushroom slices, all in more of an alfredo sauce than a marsala sauce. Pizza is delivered. Double crusted, with bland sauce, and miniscule pieces of tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms. I went up to the counter to ask for red pepper flakes, because I needed to taste something! The guy gave me a soup cup with about 1/4 cup of flakes, asking me if it was enough. He obviously new the food lacked flavor. The final disappointment, was that you are expected to bring your dishes and trash up to this table, and put them in the labeled dish buckets. Prices were reasonable, but no for flavorless food at an almost self serve type of place. I am very disappointed, as I have tried all the mom and pop places in Brownsburg, and have been disappointed in every one of them. I will continue to cook for myself. There isn't a ton of seating inside, but there's also seating on the patio, which would be nice during one of those times Indiana isn't frozen and snow-covered or melting beneath a scorching sun. The decor is a little... off, I guess, for my liking. But hey, it's not my restaurant. I came for one thing - scratch that - two things: pizza and stuffed breadsticks. Yup, you heard that right. Pepperoni stuffed breadsticks are a glorious invention that probably send the world's opinion of this country even lower, but I don't care because stuffed breadsticks are real and I want them in my belly. Their pizza, while maybe not as noteworthy as the breadsticks, is quite good. They've got some interesting combos, many of which sound good. The one we opted for really hit the spot (even if I can't remember what it was called...) and we even had some delicious leftovers to take home. So, is So Italian the best pizza shop in the world? We frequent this restaurant approximately once a month. It is a great change from fast food in Brownsburg. The restuarant is quite different from most in town and we like going there because it usually isn't very busy. Once you order and pay at the counter you seat yourself, they bring your food out, then you bus your own table. Due to this arrangement sometimes it's a little messy inside the seating area. The food we have had is great. We always have Vicki's cheese filled breadsticks for an appetizer. They are made in house and are delicious! For our meal we split one of their calzones. They are huge and easily feed 2 people. The only dish I tried and didn't enjoy was their tomato basil soup...truly bland! read more

After a bad experience in January we decided to try again and wish we hadn't. First time I got bread that was black burnt and hard as a rock. Today my boyfriend and I both ordered subs. Mine had literally at least a 1/4 of a bottle of mayonnaise on it. When I shut my sandwich to eat it globs were fall out of each side all over my plate. That's disgusting and ridiculous. So we ordered the chicken fettuccine alfredo, a large pizza, and some Ryan's breadsticks (stuffed with cheese and pepperoni) don't worry there are NOTHING like Kilroys!! I was so excited to try it out. I'd have to say there was nothing Italian about the food. Zero taste to the alfredo sauce it was like white paste that tasted like nothing .. the chicken was chopped up and looked like it came out of a can and the taste wasn't good either. I was saving hope for the breadsticks but they were a flop as well! I've made better with canned crescent rolls, string cheese and pepperonis I make for birthday parties. I didn't eat the pizza, my daughter and her dad got that. I snuck a pepperoni off the top, but pizza isn't that hard to mess up and they liked it. The best part of my meal was the salad. Last night was our first trip, ordering is a little daunting for newbies. The menu is up on the wall, it is easy to read but there aren't many descriptions of what you are ordering. After we ordered we found a laminated menu, ask for one before ordering, it explains what everything is and I would have gotten something different after I read it. We had the tour of Italy with a side salad and piece of garlic bread. Side salad was straight from a bag and no cheese or crotons. Lasagna did not have a cheese layer but was good, spaghetti was good and the fettuccine Alfredo was my favorite of the three. We could have split the plate it was big. Pizza looked good. If we go back we will split a large pasta dish or each get the smaller portion, skip the salad and get an order of breadsticks or garlic bread. read more

I should have specified that because they do not not include a description on their menu of the dish. However it was not a total bust, as I traded my dish with my date and ate his spinach calzone. The calzone was tasty however, while the marinara they give you to dip the calzone is delicious, you don't get nearly enough. One little cup is good for half a calzone, and the marinara was also cold. The zucchini lasagna also came with a salad and your choice of dressing. I got the Italian vinaigrette which was very yummy. Also included was 'So cheesy garlic bread'. I think they forgot it's supposed to be cheesy bread. It looked as though they took a French loaf, split it half, put on some butter and garlic salt and half way through cooking remembered it need some cheesy. I took it back to the counter to ask for a new dish, and barely made it back to my seat before the worker brought the same plate back, which was now steaming hot. The microwave was clearly used, as nothing aside from my first bite was disturbed on the plate. Now, here's the thing... I don't like microwaved pasta in general, because I think it makes the pasta rubbery. For the price, I wasn't expecting hand-made pasta, but I certainly wasn't expecting microwaved! We were SO excited to try this place. We live close and eat gluten free, so we made the trip. So disappointed. We spent roughly $12 apiece and could only eat about 1/4 of the food because it tasted awful. The tomato soup was like drinking chunk heavy cream with salt, and the kids mac and cheese tasted like the box the noodles came from. My 4 year old who absolutely lives for mac and cheese wouldn't touch it. My wife and I gagged upon trying it. I had to pay another $8 for a small gluten free turkey sandwich which was shameful to say the least, but at least edible. Safe to say we will not be returning anymore.
