This restaurant was entirely empty on a Sunday afternoon, it was beautiful weather but I was surprised. I imagine they get less business with the colleges over for the semester as is between Pitt and CMU campuses. I got a mango smoothie drink and the Japanese curry chicken over rice. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it, didn't taste much like the curry I had in Japan and the bowl was 3/4 rice. The drink was pretty good! Service was ok. I ordered BAO for takeout recently (so this review might not be applicable to the dine-in experience). - Pork buns: just pretty dry and bland throughout (both bun and filling). Price point of $14 for just 5 buns felt rather high. - Stir fried udon (I got pork): overall just really oily/heavy. The noodles had a decent texture and the pork was fine, but the overall greasiness made the flavour of everything (noodles, pork, veggies) all kind of taste the same.  - Taiwan sausage fried rice: at least there was one good thing that we ordered haha. Pretty average fried rice; a little oily, but nothing like the udon. I'd be OK with ordering this again if I came back. We stopped by to eat here between college tours because they had a diverse options with pretty pics. The food was not very good. I ordered the shrimp and pork wonton noodle soup. When you order wonton noodle soup, you would expect thin egg wonton noodles, especially from a place where the majority of the menu have non-American Chinese food. The noodles from my pic was obviously anything but that. They insisted that it's egg noodles but it most definitely was not. The soup was bland and the wontons were so-so. The rest of my family had the Korean spicy pork belly; the stirred fried eggplants; and the sticky rice with chicken. They all said the food was either no good or so-so. my friends took me to try this place out as i was craving something more japanese/korean and i would say this was a good choice!! i got the pork belly bowl which was super satiating and delicious. i loved the sauce that they marinated it with, making the bowl flavorful. though I wish they had given more meat, since the cabbage/kimchi to meat ratio was a bit off. everything else was great and i'm looking forward to coming back and trying other things in the menu! i was definitely eyeing their dumpling section which seem to be popular, so it's def a must try here. read more

Nicely done Asian food with a particular focus on buns and dumplings. The buns and rolls in particular were clearly crafted with care and offered an excellent combination of textures and flavors. Beyond the dim sum, I ordered mostly vegetarian entrees and was generally happy with each of them: they just weren't at the same level as the buns and rolls. In terms of the restaurant itself, it was an impressive operation in a bustling part of town. I placed a takeout order, and everything was very well packaged and ready to go exactly when the restaurant said it would be. This review is only for my Earl Grey milk tea with grass jelly. I liked that I could go straight to their ordering counter to get a bubble tea to go. Their boba menu is quite extensive. I was able to swap out boba with grass jelly with no up charge. They were a bit short staffed when I came during lunch on a weekday. I was able to still get in and out within 15min though. Three stars only because my Earl Grey milk tea was somewhat watered down. Since the grass jelly wasn't sweetened, the overall drink was a bit bland. I would maybe try another tea next time and get more than just grass jelly. Overall it was a good experience. I just wouldn't get the Earl Grey again. read more

Review is for take-out via Uber Eats. This location is called "Bao II" on the Uber Eats app. I requested "no peanuts, nut allergy" and "rice on the side" and both requests were accommodated. Pick-up around 2PM on a weekday afternoon was ready in about 20 minutes. The food travelled decently well on a 15 minute walk in 35F weather. I ordered the double cooked pork (Double Cooked Pork Belly 回锅肉) and Earl Grey Milk Boba Tea 伯爵珍珠奶茶. My requests were well accommodated, with a nut-free dish and a generous side of appropriately cooked white rice. The portions are very generous - I did not finish the double cooked pork belly and in fact had enough for a second meal later on (with extra fresh rice made at home). I was a bit surprised to note that the double cooked pork was not the Szechuan style that I am familiar with at other restaurants, but instead a more sauce-heavy style of twice cooked pork. The pieces of pork were thicker than other restaurants, and consequently not as tender. The dish came with a generous serving of cabbage, red and green peppers, and onion that all benefitted from the sauce in the dish. There were areas of high saltiness for some reason, and less spice than I would have liked. Overall, I give the twice cooked pork belly a 4/5 for the value, but this is considering that I ordered on a promotion. The Earl Grey Milk Boba Tea was unfortunately a miss. The tea itself was very strong, which was nice. However, the tapioca was tough to chew, improperly formed (difficult to drink because 2-4 balls would be clumped together, as seen in the photo) and overall flavorless, diluting the drink poorly. I would not order boba again and give it a 2/5 for good tea flavor. Overall, I would recommend Bao as a place to do a family-style sharing of dishes, or get take-out food (not boba) with a delivery app promotion. read more

It's not a bad spot for an inexpensive lunch after a trip to the museum. We ordered for the table and tried to get a little bit of everything. The pork buns were by far the best part of the meal followed by the cucumber salad. The soup dumplings had great flavor to them but the didn't hold their shape causing most of the "soup" to come out before they were able to get on the spoon. After grabbing dinner at Bao, I'm not really sure how to rate it. Some of the food was great, and other items were not quite as good as I was expecting them to be. The soup dumplings and goyza were delicious, and so was the sauce they were served with. The steamed bao (which I was most looking forward too) had a relatively bland pork and gravy center. We tried a few of the Zodiac bubble tea options -- the Aries was awesome. Even with 50% sweetness it tasted like candy. The Virgo had several add-ins that combined to give it an odd texture and wasn't as tasty. The restaurant itself has been polished up nicely and the new owners have made some upgrades, like the new system that allows you to order, pay, and even split the bill directly from your phone, which was very convenient. There were signs up about student discounts for CMU students. But the best part of the evening was the girl who greeted us and helped us with odds and ends throughout the meal -- boxes for leftovers, missing silverware, etc. She was an all-star -- really running the show :) read more

I've been to Bao a couple of times to try out things on their menu. Both times I enjoyed what I had--Japanese style teriyaki chicken, hibachi rice, pork dumplings, and green beans--and the food arrived quickly. However, I don't think I'll be going back due to the service. It was quite busy during dinner time but there were multiple employees standing behind the counter, and it felt like we were bugging them by asking for a table. When ordering hardly anything was said to us, someone just showed up with a tablet and left as quickly as possible. Finally, once we were finished and were waiting for quite some time, we had to wave someone over to give us the check. Both times their "pay at table" option didn't work. The whole time I just felt like a nuisance and I left feeling unwelcome. If the service improved it would be 5 stars. read more

First and last time at Bao. When we sat down I made a point of telling the server that we needed to get back to work - considering we were the first ones there for lunch, that shouldn't have been a problem. I ordered lo mein with fried tofu, my friend ordered a chef's special chicken dish of some kind. My food was brought out fairly quickly, but my friend was left waiting. About ten minutes after my food was served, I started trying to flag down a server to see why his food was taking so long. Not a single server ever glanced in our direction - once they were done at a table taking orders their eyes were down. Even the people at the counter never looked up. I finally commenced waving my entire arm back and forth without stopping and eventually someone noticed. According to the server who came to our table, my friend's meal always takes about 17 minutes to prepare. Considering I told the first server we needed to get back to work, it would have been nice if they had mentioned that little detail. When they finally brought his food to him, they forgot to give him a fork so he could eat it. Now to my meal: I've never ordered lo mein anywhere that didn't have at least a few vegetables. This one might have had a few stray bits of cabbage. Other than that, nothing. The fried tofu was dry and far too chewy, as if it had been cooked the day before and just reheated poorly. The noodles were bland and tasteless - not even some kind of sauce beyond whatever was used to keep them from sticking together. I had to flag down another server to ask for soy sauce and a fork for my friend. When we brought up how long we had waited and that we would have preferred to have been told about the length of time to prepare my friend's dish, they offered to let us pay right away - which I did. They also offered to get us take out containers since my friend now had no time to eat his meal. And then they forgot to get a fork for my friend once again while they were getting the containers. A wholly underwhelming experience that left me no urge to revisit Bao. read more

Yelp has two sites for this--one called Bao and the called Bao at the same address. When they changed formats (used to be more dim sum) and changed the Manu, they retained different Yelp sites. In any case, the new menu is much more aweful than before (wasn't very good to begin with). The food was tasteless and didn't receive care from the chef that it should receive. Pad Thai was a pink mess of rice noodles (ketchupped noodles) with three or four little pieces of something else. You can't call this with any conscience pad Thai. They should close this place or hire a new chef. Every one in our group was hugely disappointed, esp. the woman who was hosting an out-of-town guest. Sadly, Bao apparently takes no advantage of her knowledge, creating food, like wonton noodle soup or friend dofu ... neither of which is even remotely as great as this person made when she was herself in business. We have had egg tarts from all over the world and the ones that Bao makes are still my favorite with their light flaky crusts and perfectly flavored not too sweet custard. Pointed us in a direction to sit down. Young waiter was friendly enough. I asked for suggestions and was given the Szechuan noodles as a pick. Ordered it with chicken and checked to make sure that it also included a generous amount of vegetables. I was assured by him that it did. What arrived could only be described as something I would have been embarrassed to have whipped up in my dorm room in a hot pot years ago. What I received was a heap of thin spaghetti looking noodles with a few tiny specks of chicken and vegetables hidden in it. No sauce to speak of except the flavor off too much salt. That and a glass of tap water came to nearly $20 with tax and tip at lunch. Not even worth $3. Definitely would not recommend. read more

High quality and interesting. The dough for the dumplings was amazing, but it wasn't really my personal cup of tea. The fillings in the dumplings were as you'd expect in a steamed dumpling, but I like flavors with a little more bite. Sorry I don't remember the dishes I ordered (it was a lot of them), but the flavors were a little washed out and muted. 5 stars as I don't think my thoughts on the steamed dumplings should lower the rating. read more
