We were immediately impressed by the cute décor and welcoming atmosphere when we walked in. We visited on a Wednesday during happy hour, and the restaurant was surprisingly quiet. Our hostess, who was also serving tables, was friendly, informative, and genuinely engaging. She left about halfway through our visit, and after that service declined noticeably. The remaining server seemed overwhelmed once he became the only person covering the floor, more and more guests arrived. The menu features several unique twists and creative flavor combinations that mostly work well. The guacamole, topped with roasted chickpeas, was especially delicious. Unfortunately, the chips were inconsistent--some tasted fresh while others seemed stale. We also ordered the brussels sprouts and carne tacos. The brussels sprouts were decent but heavily covered in a mayo-based sauce; a lighter touch would have allowed the flavors to shine through. The tacos had great potential, with delicious homemade tortillas, but the carne was disappointingly chewy and fatty. We finally dropped in as this place is literally down the street and I drive by it several times a day...but when we got the mailer for a discount we were sold! Friday night around 6:30 and happy to see this place doing a good amount of business, especially at the bar. Carlos took care of our table and was very welcoming, and attentive. We started with the Sobre-Rita cocktail and the presentation (see photo) was lovely! Drink was really good too. Then order the queso fundido and shrimp aguachilie both had a unique twist (corn mushrooms red, yellow, and green peppers in the queso). We had the enchiladas verdes with chicken tinga and the surf and turf quesadillas. The flavor combinations on everything we ordered were amazing, we both loved the sprinkle of grilled cheese on the tortillas and that everything came with pickled onions salsa Fresca and fresh avocado slices. Definitely one of the best enchiladas I've ever had. Even without the promo discount the prices were very reasonable not to mention the portions were huge! We split everything and still couldn't get through half of each entree so had plenty of left overs to share with the rest of the family to entice them to come with us next time. I'd be remiss not to mention the decor and atmosphere. We loved it! Totally transformed from and unrecognizable as previous Pioneer BBQ! It's nice to finally see a vibey, aesthetic dining option in East County -- Sobremesa delivers on that front. We came here with family visiting from out of town. It's located in a strip mall with plenty of parking, and the restaurant itself is surprisingly large with multiple areas. On the left there's a beautiful bar, a private dining room with big windows (likely for events), a cute entryway with photo ops, and even a DJ setup. I asked the hostess and they do music on certain nights, which sounds fun to check out. Our hostess was friendly and quickly sat our party of six in a semi‑private area. The music was nice, and the warm color palette with soft plaster‑style walls made the space feel inviting. Our server was friendly and answered all our questions. We came on a Sunday during the tail end of happy hour -- love seeing a weekend happy hour. They even had a mocktail option, which I ordered, and my partner got a mezcal cocktail that was also good. The menu, however, felt overpriced for the portion sizes, and if it weren't for the happy hour pricing on a few items, I would've found it too expensive for what you get. We ordered the chamoy wings, carne asada tacos, surf & turf taco, ceviche, and queso fundido. For dessert, we tried the churros and the pan de elote. Drinks came out slowly, and as we waited, a server came around with a platter of cucumber and lemon slices for water -- a unique touch. The food took a long time, especially the wings. We almost canceled them because everyone else was nearly done eating by the time they arrived. The server did explain the fryer was having issues, but it was still unfortunate. The chamoy wings sounded unique, but they didn't look or taste like chamoy -- not bad, just misleading. The queso fundido was small and had more veggies than cheese, so it didn't really taste like queso fundido. And the ceviche didn't come with tostadas or chips, which was odd; we asked, and the server kindly brought some. If they improve their speed and tweak the menu, I could see Sobremesa becoming a great spot. If I lived in the area and wanted something a little more unique or elevated, I'd come back. What a nice little gem to have in this part of town. It's great not to have to drive farther to go for a date night or a special celebration. The ambience is really nice. They've done a great job with the interior exterior. Lots of cute spots to take photos, and cool moody lighting. I loved the gringa tacos, a really tasty combination of ingredients and my family enjoyed their food as well aside from the person who got the expensive steak. It was loaded with gristle unfortunately. The service was very pleasant. Everybody from the front to our server was eager to please and had a nice smile offering helpful suggestions. Besides the steak, I'm docking one star for two other little issues. 1. They need to coach their back of the house staff to not smoke at the back door and watch intently at the people parking lol. It's just a little close for comfort because it is a small lot and it is the first impression. I think they just need to push their smoking area just a little bit further back towards the fence. 2. There is an acoustic issue because most of their materials inside the restaurant are hard so somebody sitting at the same table can have a hard time hearing conversation. I'm having a hard time understanding these reviews. The only thing I can assume is we picked the wrong things on the menu, because we were extremely underwhelmed with everything. The ceviche was a bowl of mango soup with some tomatoes, onions and maybe a couple of pieces of fish. Barely resembled ceviche. The empanadas are apparently made to order by a lovely lady in the back and, great, she did a good job, but they were just ok in my opinion. They did come out hot, so, a plus? The grilled Caesar salad came out drenched in dressing and last, which didn't make sense considering we had already got our entrees. The quesadillas were literally tortillas with some extremely overcooked steak and shrimp inside. Zero else to them. Dry and fell apart. The fajita meat was tender, however the beans and rice that came out with it were cold and tasteless. We waited 20 mins for anyone to address us and 35 before we even got our first drink. When the waiter did come over he was very lovely and helpful and did check in pretty frequently which we appreciated. We had mixed feelings about the drinks. The rosa salvaje was heavy on the chartreuse and was not great. The sombras de la selva was our favorite part of the night. The chili oil was a nice touch. All in all I was super excited to come and try it out here. Unfortunately, I was pretty let down. Bad night for the place? I dunno. Possibly. But definitely not somewhere I have to visit again. We recently visited with a reservation for four and arrived a little early. Thankfully, they were able to seat us right away, which was a great start to the evening and much appreciated. The atmosphere was beautiful, especially as the sun was setting, creating a great ambiance for dinner. The only downside was that the air conditioning inside was cranked up a bit too high, making it uncomfortably cold throughout our visit. Service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. We decided to keep it light and ordered drinks along with the flautas and guacamole. Both appetizers were absolutely delicious. They also brought out complimentary chips and salsa, and the salsa was a standout--fresh, flavorful, and one of the best parts of the meal. The drink menu was just okay, and nothing really stood out to us, so we ended up ordering customized versions of drinks instead. I remember dining at this San Carlos address when it was a popular barbeque joint that had debuted several years ago. The business has now closed and has been replaced by this Latin American restaurant. After a significant renovation of the space, Sobremesa opened late last year. The ownership really spruced up both the exterior and interior to give it an upscale feel reflective of a coastal resort south of the border. All of the on-site parking spaces were filled during my visit so I parked at the next door shopping plaza and walked over. A large bar and lounge area was to the left when you entered. It was mainly empty while I was there. The rest of the dining room could seat close to 100 customers. The entire place featured wood and neutral tones. A two-page menu displayed seafood appetizers, tostadas, and tacos on the left side. Veggies choices, entrees, and desserts were listed on the right side. My initial selection was the Chilean Sea Bass, however a server informed me that the kitchen was sold out of this item for the evening. I pivoted to the other fish entree which was the Pescado a la Talla. Two seared branzino fillets were marinated with garlic and chili adobo. Blistered shishito peppers and an arugula salad were the sides. A separate plate also came with the order containing Mexican rice, refried beans, and corn tortillas. A set of three salsas was also provided which I used sparingly because of their heat. The food came out much quicker than I expected. It made me wonder if it had already been prepared and just reheated. The peppers were too spicy for my palate so I placed those aside. The fish was rather dry as I scraped the meat from the skin. I placed some of it inside a tortilla with the rice and beans to make a soft taco for consumption. I gave three stars for the execution of my entree. The excellent service was why I added another star to my overall rating of Sobremesa. read more

(Writer's note: I was forced to edit this review by Yelp because of my 'colorful' language. I am republishing now, drained as it is of some of my more incendiary language.) It pains me to write this, given how mouth-wateringly good the food is, but the service on the night my friend and I came was nothing short of dreadful. What should have been a ninety minute slice of heaven turned into an almost three-hour slog. (Truth be told, this was my second time, but I was almost the only one at the bar that time, so it was hard to ignore me.) But why focus on the negative, when we can focus on the positive. Michelin-star chef, Oscar Torres, designed the menu for Restauranteur and Owner Andrea Carbonaro, whose secret sauce is opening comfy, reasonably-priced Italian fare in local neighborhoods. In other words, he doesn't ask you to come to him, he comes to you. Bel Tocco! This venture, however, has a Latin American pop that soars. I've tried the Tostada Vietnamita (Hamachi / Guac-Chile / Vietnamese Slaw / Toasted Peanuts / Chile Serrano) - get Hamachi when you can. It's this silky whitefish that, not unlike Tofu, picks up the flavors around it. Here, you find yourself dead in Hanoi heaven, never feeling the need to eat again; the Taco Gringa (Pork al Pastor / Caramelized Cheese / Grilled Pineapple / Pickled Red Onion) - was drenched in dedication and who says you can't have your pineapple and eat it, too. Pork. Pineapple. Pickled onion. Perfection! The night we went, it was Restaurant Week. It's a chance to present your restaurant to first-timers in effort to earn their business. The menu is pared down and fixed by three courses. There being two of us, we got to try our fair share of items. We had the Brussel sprouts with Epazote and Smoke Paprika; the Aquachile Tatamado, jumbo shrimp in their shell, beans, rice, and tortillas; a Black Cod and Cabbage Taco that should be required eating in grades three through eight. For dessert, we "shared" the Avocado Sorbet and the Pastel de Elote Asado, a sort of cornbread with a Charred Corn Creme Anglaise. The sorbet had a few too many ice chips in it for me, but the pastel? Ay, Caramba! When I finished that, I realized eating would never be necessary again. Now, you sort of can't get around this concept of "Sobremesa," which loosely translates from the Spanish to 'what happens around/it's about the table. Take you time. Spend time with your loved ones, your friends. Laugh. Cry. Leave the theater feeling good about Life all over again. But hang out and enjoy! Godere! Except when the reason your hanging out is because you haven't seen your server because now the FBI is looking for her and no one seems to know what the next guy is doing, you tend to get delays, miscommunication, and new faces showing up with such irregularity, you don't if you should be grateful you got something to eat, or made it out of there in under 48 Hours without being thrown in an anonymous van bound for a new season of "Squid Game". I'm not saying that it took a long time, but I literally saw my osteoporosis take root in my legs and my neck was sagging by the time we left. I hope I'm pardoned with this gullet. Now, granted, I was in a bitchy mood from a right leg injury and left my Ibuprofen at home - not thinking I would need it - so we left because I willed it to happen. But, it's not going to stop me from coming back because the food is some of the best-tasting Mexican food I've had in a very long time. Just, please, learn the menu and communicate more effectively, and there are no heights Sobremesa won't reach. read more

This place has taken over the building where Pioneer BBQ was located, and they did an outstanding job with the remodel. The restaurant is beautiful and definitely has Valle vibes. The food was pretty good, though nothing spectacular. I want to give kudos to the gringo taco; we really liked that. Unfortunately, they were out of oysters when we visited, which was disappointing since they are our favorite thing to eat when we are in Valle for vacation. The rice was bland, but the beans were delicious. The service was very friendly but also needs improvement, as we had to ask for certain items multiple times before they made it to our table. I'll credit this to them being a new business, with hopes that it quickly improves. I was excited to try out this restaurant based on a recommendation for restaurant week but the food was pretty disappointing. The good-service was attentive and friendly but not intrusive. The desert decor was inviting and warm with dim lighting although the sound of voices was amplified in the open space. The not-so-good-food. The best thing of the night was the tostada de atún which had nice citrusy and refreshing flavor with nice bites of tuna. The shrimp appetizer was nicely grilled with a garlicky flavor. Good but not memorable. The entrees were completely disappointing with lack of seasoning. The ribeye had a thick layer of fat but the meat itself wasn't particularly tender. Even the rice and refried beans had minimal seasoning. The pescado à la talla tasted as bland as it looked. The avocado sorbet had mild avocado flavor but it also had icy chunks mixed in. The elote cake was better with texture of bread pudding and ice cream was standard. Hey foodies, let's dive in... Sobremesa is a Spanish term describing the ritual of lingering around the table after a meal to laugh, connect, and enjoy good company long after the food arrives. And linger we did... unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. First off, the vibe and decor are fantastic. Honestly, not something you'd expect to find in La Mesa, which is why our expectations were high considering we drove from downtown just to try it. The space has a dark, moody, upscale Mexico City aesthetic that photographs beautifully. That said, they desperately need sound dampening because the acoustics make the dining room sound like a middle school cafeteria during pizza day. We had a party of four for a 7:30pm dinner reservation. The restaurant was only about half full, and we were seated quickly... then the red flags started waving and I wish we would have just left as soon as were seated. All four chairs at our table had crumbs and food on them. We had to flag someone down just to clean the seats. Then one of the plates arrived with something sticky on it and a long hair stuck across the surface. Not exactly the opening act you want at a place trying to sell an upscale dining experience. Service never recovered from there. It took around 10 minutes just to get drink orders in, and our waiter never introduced himself, explained the menu, or checked in with much enthusiasm. So anonymous mystery waiter shall remain anonymous. To give credit where it's due, the bar did a solid job. The mocktails were modified well, and the Café con Rumba was genuinely excellent. Hats off to the bartender because they were carrying this restaurant on their back. But that only get an establishment so far. Now for the food: Tuna Tiradito Brussel Sprouts Esquite Queso Fondido Flautas Pollo Asado "1/2 Chicken" Steak Tacos The brussel sprouts were actually pretty good, but let's be honest... plenty of places can make good brussel sprouts. This is supposed to be a Latin dining experience. Everything else ranged from forgettable to offensive. The Queso Fondido was especially disappointing. Instead of rich melted cheese, it felt more like a confused succotash with a light drizzle of queso trying its best to hold the operation together. But the true disaster was the Pollo Asado. The menu advertises a "1/2 Chicken." What arrived was a dry, overcooked chicken breast that looked like it had gone through a custody battle. When we questioned it, the manager actually tried gaslight us and told us it was indeed half a chicken. Respectfully... absolutely not. We know the difference between a chicken breast and a half chicken. The photos speak for themselves. At that point we basically gave up and asked for the check while our friend sat there still hungry because the chicken was borderline impossible to chew. To be fair, after noticing our reactions, they switched waiters and eventually the manager came back and removed the chicken from the bill. Credit where it's due there. But as we were leaving, we started noticing how dirty the restaurant actually was. Food debris and napkins under tables, crumbs on chairs, dirty surfaces everywhere. Once you notice it, you can't unsee it. The most disappointing part? Our hopes were genuinely high because the original menu was created by Oscar Torres from Animalón. But keep in mind, he was only there briefly to help launch the concept and is no longer involved. Most of the glowing reviews online are from 2 to 4 months ago, and based on our experience, the food quality seems to have fallen off a cliff since then. One final note: the online menu is inaccurate. The Leche de Tigre ceviche is no longer available, which was one of the dishes we were most excited to try. Foodies... I first learned about the opening of Sobremesa Restaurant, in La Mesa, when I was dining at Trattoria da Sofia, in Kensington. I inquired about a staff member, Sara, and I was advised by Giuseppe that she had moved on to open Sobremesa. Accordingly, I made a reservation for the following Sunday evening, at 4:00 p.m. There is a small, awkwardly designed parking lot with one handicapped parking place. When I arrived, no one was at the reception desk. Happily, Fabrizio soon arrived and he was very pleasant. I was seated under some lighted arches in the main dining room. Happily, Sara was present that night, and she took care of me. I ordered the chopped raw clams as an appetizer, and I enjoyed it. Tried out a new spot in east county and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious and fresh. We ordered ceviche de pescado, tostada de atun, and pancetta de cedro. The staff were very warm and welcoming. They were also helpful with answering questions we had regarding the menu before placing our order. The ambiance is very trendy and vibey. It's a great spot for dinner with friends, family, and even a date night. Although, the noise level was really loud. It was fully booked the night we had dinner. Sobremesa has recently opened its doors in the San Carlos - San Diego area in the recently vacated Pioneer BBQ. They offer a variety of Latin American fare from several regions, from Mexico to South America. The place looks and feels very inviting. The minute you walk in, your blood starts to flow, from the Latin American music paired with the Latin American decor throughout the restaurant. I started with the Almejas Crudas or raw clams with a host of vibrant and tasty ingredients. The clams were fresh and of a good size. They came in a tomato ponzu, Chile Chiltepin, melon, and green olives. They were refreshing and delicious to eat. Next, I enjoyed the Brussels Sprouts Esquite. These were quite good, but could have used a little salt added towards the end of preparation. The smoked paprika aioli they came with was delicious. I liked the addition of the cotija cheese, although it was used sparingly. They offer a variety of tostadas on the menu, but one definitely caught my eye: the Tostada Vietnamita with hamachi. The tostada came with a fresh and vibrant Vietnamese slaw with serrano peppers. Applied directly on the crispy tostada, was a guacamole chile, which was very good and quite unique. The toasted crushed peanut with the slaw reminded me of eating a bowl of a Vietnamese noodle dish called "bun." I was excited about the grilled Camarón Zarandeado shrimp. The shrimp were well grilled and looked beautiful on the plate. I did however, although good, feel that they needed more of that butter garlic flavor. I would consider pouring or brushing a warm garlic butter sauce or garlic infused olive oil on the shrimp upon presentation. Also, they should consider butterflying them a little bit, while keeping the shells on, for ease of access to the meat. The shrimp came with a side of re-fried beans, white butter rice, and warm corn tortillas. The beans were great, but the rice was alright. A more creative seasoning would be nice here. Perhaps a touch of lime and cilantro. One item on the menu that is a must is the "Pastel de Elote Asado" or grilled corn cake. This was an amazing dessert. I loved the density of the corn cake and the slight smokiness of the grilling. The cake offered a great natural corn flavor. The cake paired well with the macerated blue berries and light fresh milk ice cream. The service was friendly and efficient. Really psyched to have this great new restaurant so close to us! What's even more amazing is that it's reasonably priced, with the shareable entrees priced between $24-$44. We had cocktails, shrimp aguachile, and the pork collar. The portion of shrimp aguachile was generous. It was tasty, but not as spicy as I expect aguachile to be. I'd love to see a ceviche camarones cocinado on the menu to go with all the raw options. The pork collar was tender and came in a delicious mole sauce. The accompanying "salad" was a little confusing. It had Bibb lettuce, something resembling red mizuma, and pickled radish. There was no dressing. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wrap the pork in the lettuce, Vietnames style. We ordered a side of rice and beans to eat with the pork instead. The restaurant is gorgeous. Service was fast and excellent, especially considering this was their first regular night of service! I'll definitely be back soon to try the delicious-looking ribeye the table next to us ordered. Only downside was the insufficient parking lot, but you could probably get away with parking at the Albertsons next door. read more

Incredible from the moment you walk in the door! Sobremesa has tons of seating inside its newly renovated space, which you can tell had been meticulously curated to transport you to another world. We loved observing all the finishes, color palette, and lighting throughout. To the food, my wife and I ordered two tacos each and an app - taco gringa (al pastor, my favorite of the bunch), taco de coliflor (vegetarian, great nutty flavors shine with the toasted cauliflower), Ensenada fish taco (solid and traditional, with hefty fish portion), and we shared the ceviche de vegetales asado (fresh and filling). We also noted the fast and friendly service, we were waited on often to refill our drinks or take away empty plates. We look forward to coming back to have a drink at the bar! read more

So nice that there's a trendy & yummy restaurant like this in this area now! -Service was very friendly & attentive -has it's own parking lot -in the San Carlos area, off the 125 freeway -lovely tropical & fun atmosphere, feels like im on vacation in Tulum here! -love that there's various sized tables, for small & large parties -there's a nice bar inside -music wasnt too loud, which was nice. You can still converse. -large restaurant with a lot of space & seating -we enjoyed our Gringa & Cauliflower tacos (note that they are a large portion) *wish the Cauliflower taco came out warmer, but it's their soft opening, so that's understandable Looking forward to more date nights here & stopping by the bar for a drink in the future. Without a doubt the best restaurant in the area. Better than anything in Northpark. Sobremesa is competing with Bankers Hill. May on par Trust and Fort oak. It has the classiness, freshness, and flavor combinations of San Francisco. Inside is incredible. Soft sophistication. Neutral soft color pallet, and attentive but very kind staff. This would never be associated with The Pioneer and what it was before that. The bar in the middle has been removed and moved to the left. It's a classy bar. I think I spotted some Macallan. As mentioned above the food here is the best in San Diego. We ordered: -The ahi appetizer. Ahi could have been better but the large slices of avocado and side coleslaw thing were awesome. -Both shrimp and fish tacos. These are huge and piled high. 1 person could finish 1. Both of the seafood items were great. The fish comes to the restaurant 12 hours before each shift. The mint and cilantro on one of them was brilliant. -The pork taco, the one with pineapples. Again, huge. Be mindful of how much you're ordering. The pork quantity was small and wrapped with cheese. The tortilla was huge and could have been softer for accessibility. Still though, it was great. Prices here are fair. They may be a touch high for the surrounding neighborhood. Our order above was only $80. 1 appetizer and 3 tacos. This is absolutely ok for Del Cerro, (Green + Dailard + Hurst) families but for Lake Murray, Santee, El Cajon it may be pricey. Dress nice, come for amazing food, maybe leave behind the children. The dish quality is fantastic, they have fire dancers apparently and the staff are really pushing for the great experience to keep them in business. COME AND SUPPORT THIS LOCAL BUSINESS. Also, the chef has a 2 Michelin star restaurant in Los Angeles, no big deal. read more

An enjoyable higher-end Latin restaurant for the San Carlos community to experience. The ambiance is a noticeable step up from the previous barbecue spot, and it seems many families choose this restaurant for celebrations. While the service is attentive, food can take some time to arrive, especially during peak dinner hours. A nice touch is their water service, which comes with a choice of lemon, lime, or cucumber. We were served tostadas with three dips. My favorite was the citrusy avocado sauce, while a sweeter sesame dip and a spicier salsa rojo rounded out a pleasant mix of flavors. The tostadas were slightly stale, so I wished for a better vehicle for the dips. *Tuna Tiradito: the thick slices of tuna were fresh and I enjoyed the crunch and subtle sweetness of the chayote. The avocado was on the firmer side but still fresh. Fresno chiles were subtle, while the red onion was cut more rustic, giving it a pungent, sharp bite. The shiso aguachile was acidic and herbaceous. The sauce was prepared tableside, and while the presentation was interesting, I would have preferred if the vegetables and seafood had been marinated longer. *Taco Gringa: pricey for a single taco, but delicious. The pork al pastor had a nearly shredded texture that blended well with the melted cheese crust. Grilled pineapple added classic sweetness, and pickled red onion brought acidity. The portion resembled two street tacos. *Brussel Sprouts Esquite: a must-order and one of my favorite preparations of sprouts. They had a satisfying charred crust and were coated in a smoky, tart aioli. Peanuts added a nutty crunch, and fried epazote brought a minty note. The portion is shareable, though I found myself eating most of it. *Pastel de Elote Asado: warm cornbread topped with macerated blueberries and cold milk ice cream. A sweet cream was poured tableside. I wished the cream had been served on the side so I could control how much went on the dessert, as it overwhelmed the bottom of the cornbread. The cream was very sweet, which could be cloying for some. Overall, this is a lovely option for a nicer dinner. It is on the pricey side, but I would return regularly for the Brussel sprouts. read more

Loved checking this place out! The ambiance was beautiful, and the food was delicious. We in particular loved the sea bass; the ahí verde sauce was so flavorful and the fish was luscious and tender. We also really loved the charred elote cake for dessert. We will be coming back to try more dishes! Our waiter Fabricio also recommended the pork belly. Overall, I thought this was an impressive restaurant. I would say this is great for large parties or if you have friends out of town that you want to show. It's beautifully decorated. I came here for Valentine's Day, so there was a set menu, but I appreciated that since I did get to try and drink an appetizer entrée and dessert. For how busy that place was service was wonderful. The server was very attentive. I feel like it is a pricey restaurant, but the flavors are very good. read more

The hand crafted cocktails were exceptional, the food with its simple ingredients tasted elevated, and the service with Felipe (our great server) was fantastic! We tried the shrimp appetizer served with homemade corn tortillas, rice and beans. For entrees the sea bass with verde sauce and tempura lobster tacos were a great finale to the meal! read more
