Knowing that I would obviously be more comfortable doing high miles for an entire week on my own bike, the shop graciously offered to rent just a wheel, rather than a whole bike. They don't normally rent bikes, so quality on rentals may be lower than other shops, but the bikes they sell are top notch and it comes with a year of service fo free! Might be an OK bike shop, just don't show up within 20 minutes of when they close. First time at this shop and we were met by a rude lady explaining how it's not a good time because they are bringing all the bikes inside from outside. Shop inside was packed as they were nearly done. I asked if a vintage Bianchi was for sale and got a rude "NO". This person clearly has not won "employee of the month" in many years. SoCal Bike: This is what you do WHEN you close, not before you close. Or change your hours to close at 2:40pm on Saturday's so your employees can leave at 3. When it comes to bike shops I would like to say I have been in quite a few ever since I got into cycling/triathlons, hell my wife even use to have a part-time job working in one so she could learn more about bikes. When it comes to bikes shops this one left me far from impressed, contrary to what the reviews here said when I was looking for a bike shop to rent a bike coming from the East Coast on business and still needed a bike to do workouts on. The first thing I should have realized it is confusing that the company has two different websites with two different contact numbers. The first is https://www.socalbikeoceanside.com/ which has a contact number on the top of the page what forwards you call to the real number and the other site is https://socalbike.com/ which has the same number you will find on the front of the store, and both have their own reservation system. I called the store shortly after arriving in Oceanside, and Jim answered the phone. I explained to Jim exactly what I needed and inquired about his inventory. My main requirement was at least a 60cm bike. I explained to him over the phone I was renting the bike as I was training to Long-distance Duathlon National Championship in Miami, FL. Jim confirmed he had a bike I could rent, and out of curiousty I did inquire if it was an all-aluminum bike or aluminum with a carbon-fork (similar to one of the bikes I own at home) and he said it was the latter. Okay, cool then no surprised for me. We talked about the rental price since I was only going to be having it for no more than 48 hours from when I picked up after work the next day, and he gave me a slightly lower price because of it. A star for that, and another star because he said he would put Look pedals on which I needed for my cycle shoes (even though I did bring my own from my bike) I arrived the next afternoon to pick it up, and the first thing that struck me was how cluttered/disorganized the store looked when I walked in. Oh well, if it worked for him, but the store does get the award for least first impression. I introduced myself, and said I was here to pick up the bike. He pointed to a bike that was currently up on the repair stand and said that one was ready to go. I gave him the measurements off my bike at home so the bike would have the same bike fit. (I was after all doing at least one two hour bike ride) First thing to come of this was this was not a 60cm bike like we talked about, it was a 58cm, but Jim said he would just raise the seat higher. At this point I went with it because there was going to be no time to get to another location and get a bike. I got the bike, placed it in the car, and headed back to the hotel. My coach had me take the bike out the next day to feel it out and familiarize myself with the bike. Needless to say I did. Now I only really got into bikes starting in 2011, so needless to say I did not know much about the bike Jim gave me, but after riding it I found out more. First off the brakes were suspect and had a vibration in them and was not comfortable going downhill with the bike as the bike had a wobble to it as well. So after four miles I stopped the bike, and that is when I noticed the front tire had cracking in it, so I looked at the rear and it was completely bald. I take part of the responsibility for that and not checking, but at the same time would not expect a bike shop would hand over a bike, rental or not, with potential serious safety issues. After I get back to the hotel I do my research on the bike and find out the bike is an old Cannondale from 2002, oh and the model is all aluminum and does not have a carbon fork like the owner claimed it had, and I was stuck with it. Getting to the end of the story, I drive to the store two days later to return the bike before I depart for the East Coast the next morning. As you will see on the websites, and on front of the store the hours for a Thursday are 10AM to 6PM. I arrived there with my business partner in tow and arrive at 5:40, only to find the doors are locked and no one is inside. There is a piece of paper on the front door window that was there before that mentions for early or late pickups to call or text the number below. First I call. No answer, and the voicemail is full. So I text, (still before 6PM) inquiring what to do with the bike....no answer. I try calling several more times....no answer. I text again because there was no way I could return the next morning and explain if I do not hear from him in the next 10min I was going to leave the bike....no answer. So after being there for over 30 minutes and no response I placed the bike on the other side of a locked up fence and left. As of this writing, three and a half hours later....still no response. If you are looking to rent from SoCal bikes for a short ride or a novice rider, you may be good to go. If, however, you are someone like myself you might look elsewhere. PS I did get a free water bottle. read more

These guys are so nice and are reasonably priced. I brought my bike that had been taken apart when I moved from Boston. Basically it was a mess. I was even missing some parts that I forgot to bring with me when I brought it to the shop. They put it back together and didn't charge me an arm and a leg for the parts that I was missing. And like I said they were so nice and friendly. I rode my bike home with no problems. 10/10 would come again if I needed help with my bike. read more

The owner I'm assuming (short fat man with a busted face and eye) was extremely rude and unprofessional when I brought my bike in to be worked on after waiting 2 weeks for my appointment. Talked s*** on my brand new ebike (which his shop is a registered shop for that specific manufacturer). Talked down to me, didnt take responsibility for what his employees told me on the phone, called me cheap, told me I wanted something for nothing (the manufacturer was paying for the entire appointment), There were a lot of specific things that happened that would fill 2 pages to type but every step of the process in dealing with this shop was horrible and I feel sorry for anyone who comes into contact with the short fat rude owner. read more

Jim and his team are who you want to meet when you are booking bikes. The online registration was very simple and allowed us to send the waiver to everyone in our party via their emails to sign. Also the price was WAY better. When we arrived his team fitted us for the bikes and gave us helmets and water bottles at no additional charge. He also pointed us in the direction and gave tips. I really like this shop. The vibe is super chill and all the people that work there are super friendly. They don't try to oversell you on parts and get the job done quickly. Have been here a few times for a tune up and always get my bike back working like a gem. This is a great place to come to rent or buy a bike. All different types of bikes from mountain to e-bikes. Our daughter needed a new adult sized bike but needed some practice time first. So we rented a bike from here for a week and the staff was super helpful and knowledgeable. They even took off the cost of the bike rental on our purchase. Even though they were busy they looked over my bike and asked me if I could leave it with them. I did not expect the bike back until possibly several days after I dropped it off due to the fact that I knew they had multiple bikes to work on. This place rocks. These guys are the real deal and extremely nice. I had a flat tire on my new e-bike (less than 500 miles). I talked to Mark about it. He said he could fix it within an hour or so. He did. He found a very small nail in the tire that had punctured the tube. The price was incredibly reasonable. Was looking to get a kickstand and have it installed on my bicycle. Cruised on over and they said they could do that no problem. $11.99 for the kickstand and $5 to install it. That's cheaper than Amazon I'm sure! Especially considering the time it would have taken my clumsy self to do it. A bolt on my fender meant the fender would need to be removed to install the kickstand. They didn't charge me any extra for the additional labor. Even threw in a shorter bolt for the fender to accommodate the fix. Two really nice gentlemen working at the shop. Will definitely be back for future fixes. read more

I do not Yelp a lot. As a matter of fact, my last Yelp review was 2015. But I do Yelp when my service is really bad or really good. Unfortunately, this review is the latter. I dropped my bike off at the shop last Wednesday and was told that I would get a diagnostic review within a day or two. The guy that helped me said he himself would most likely work on my bike and "He would get on it and was 200 pounds and would test it." I was thinking, "Ok. Poor bike." Fast forward to Saturday, no one had called me about my bike, so I called there. The guy I talked to said they had not gotten to my bike. So, I called today, Monday, and the guy that I spoke with on Saturday said they had just put my bike on the rack, and it was "perfect timing." I was thinking, "Perfect timing, I was supposed to have my bike diagnosed by Friday. But ok." He said, "I will call you back in 30 minutes." In a few minutes I get a call from them, and they did not leave a message, then I get a text and they said, "Your bike it done." I was thinking, "How could my bike not be ready 5 minutes ago and now it is ready?" So, I texted back and said, "You were supposed to tell me what was wrong with my bike before you made repairs." I was not happy. So, I drove to the shop and another guy told me he had adjusted the derailer and removed a plastic piece I did not need. I found it odd and presumptuous to remove a piece of my bike without my permission and was a bit annoyed (That is an understatement, but I just wanted my bike back). I said, "How much do I owe you?" And he said, "$20." So, for 5 minutes of work, they charged me $20. I called REI after picking up my bike and asked them about the mystery "plastic piece" that was removed, and the guy at REI said, "You don't need it, but it is weird that they would remove it without your permission. It is not easy to remove. It would have to be cut off or the bike dismantled." Needless to say, I will not be going back there. I normally take my bike to REI but wanted to support local, small business. Big mistake. Aside from their shoddy business practices, the people that work in there are super creepy and have zero customer service abilities. I think they are all hating life. It makes me sad...but mostly for their shop dog that has to be around those creepers all day. read more
